Governor Udom Emmanuel

Mr Ibanga Etang, an aide to Gov.  Mr Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
It would be recalled that few months ago, the governor’s Special Assistant on Electoral Matters, Mr Chris Okorie also dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for APC.
Etang, a former Chairman of Esit Eket Local Government, resigned on April 9, as Special Assistant to the Governor on Projects and formally registered with the APC at his Etebi Ward 7 along with over 300 followers on April 10.
Addressing his supporters at a post-defection meeting on Friday, Etang said with their entry into APC, the party stood 70 per cent chance of winning Esit Eket Local government Area.
Etang, who was also a former President of Afigh Iwaad Ekid, the umbrella youth organization in Eket Federal Constituency, said he left the PDP because of impunity.
“I blame the continuing exodus from the Esit Eket PDP on a situation where an individual takes Esit Eket as his personal property,” he stated.
Latest Reality Metro reports that Etang had also served as Special Assistant to former Gov. Godswill Akpabio.
According to him, he has refused overtures from PDP leaders in the state in the last few days not to defect to APC.
He said, “I vowed that my supporters and I have decided to move on and no going back.”
In his resignation letter to the Governor, he said he was leaving because it was “necessary to depart now in line with the dictates of my conscience and highest level of sincerity.”
Receiving the defectors, Mr Bassey Dan-Abia Jnr, a former member of the House of Representatives said the APC has been increasing in number, and expressed optimism that the party would take over the state in 2019.
He commended the defectors for their courage and boldness and assured them of Federal Government lofty programmes for the state.
Our correspondent reports that seven chieftains of the PDP in the local government have so far defected to APC.
They include Sen. Etang Umoyo, a former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Bassey Dan-Abia, a former NDDC Commissioner, Mr Imaobong Inyang, a retired Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mike Eyo and two former House of Representatives members, Bassey Dan-Abia Jnr. and Eseme Eyiboh.

Syria President, Bashir Al-Assad

Lebanon’s Hezbollah does not believe the latest Syria crisis will spiral into a direct U.S.-Russia conflict or a wider all-out war, its deputy leader said in comments published on Friday.
The heavily armed and Iranian-backed Shi’ite movement has been a vital military ally of President Bashar al-Assad in the seven-year-old Syrian war.
“We rule out the situation developing into a direct American-Russian clash or a wide state of war.
“The conditions do not point to a total war unless U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu completely lose their minds,” Sheikh Naim Qassem told newsmen.
Trump has threatened strikes against Assad’s forces after a suspected gas attack on a rebel town where dozens of people died, and a Russian envoy has voiced fears of a wider conflict between Washington and Moscow.
The threat of confrontation between Russia, the Syrian state’s key ally, and the West loomed after Trump said on Wednesday missiles “will be coming” and lambasted Moscow for standing by Assad.
Trump has tempered those remarks since and even as he consulted allies Britain and France, there were signs of efforts to prevent the crisis from spiralling out of control.
The White House said no final decision has been made on Syria after Trump met his national security team on Thursday. Reuters/LR News

Khloe Kardashian has forgiven her boyfriend Tristan Thompson over accusations he cheated on her after she gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday.

This is coming barely seven days after Thompson was accused of cheating the TV show

The “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star, who gave birth to a daughter Thursday morning, “is feeling nothing but happiness right now”.
“Absolutely nothing else matters,” a source quoted Kardashian as saying.
Kardashian welcomed the bundle of joy just two days after photos emerged of the Cleveland Cavaliers player kissing a woman at PH-D Lounge in New York City.
The photos, obtained by the Daily Mail were snapped at the rooftop bar Saturday night.

Soon after, The Shade Room posted a separate video showing Thompson and the woman appearing to enter the Four Seasons hotel together.

TMZ also shared video from October appearing to show the basketball star kissing a woman at a DC hookah lounge.

The same video also appeared to show Thompson touching and engaging with two other women. Kardashian was three months pregnant at the time.

In spite the seemingly damning photos and video, Kardashian “isn’t even mad at Tristan right now”.
“She’s basically already forgiven him. She is in a bubble of love and peace and happiness right now”.
“Everything that happened with Tristan is less about ‘cheating’ and more like, it was just a random drunken hookup that meant nothing and was kissing at most and didn’t lead to anything else and was the fault of stupid groupies trying to trap him, and everybody just needs to move on,” the source said.
Kardashian’s forgiveness comes at the heels of another Daily Mail report alleging Thompson cheated on the reality star with a fifth woman.

According to The Mail, the basketball player has been intimate with a woman identified only as Tania over the past five months.
They have been pictured together several times at hotels and nightclubs.

A bomb killed five spectators at a football match in southern Somalia, police and a lawmaker said on Friday, the first time an explosion has targeted a stadium.
The blast went off in the port town of Barawe, in the Lower Shabelle region, when residents were watching a football match on Thursday afternoon, police said, adding that al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab could be behind the attack.
Police said it appeared to have been detonated by remote control.
“The bomb killed five people and injured a dozen others in the football field.
“All the casualties were from the onlookers,” Mahad Dhoore, a lawmaker for South West state told Reuters.
Police officer Mohamed Aden said al Shabaab group was suspected of being behind the attack and put the number
of dead at four and wounded at 12.
“We believe al Shabaab was behind it and that the target was officials who were not seated there at the time of the match.
“The bomb looked like a remotely controlled one that was planted there,” Aden told Reuters from Barawe.
Al Shabaab are fighting to topple Somalia’s Western-backed central government and establish their own rule based on their strict interpretation of Islamic law.
The group frequently carries out bombings and gun attacks in the capital Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia.
“Al Shabaab carried out an explosion that killed teenagers who were just playing football in Barawe town.
“Al Shabaab is the only enemy we have,” President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said during a farewell party for Somalia’s outgoing parliament speaker. Reuters/LR News

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has arrested one Michael Obasuyi, for alleged fraud to the tune of N11.4bn.

The suspect, according to the EFCC, had written a petition against a mobile company in March 2018 but in a dramatic twist, the mobile firm wrote a counter-petition to the EFCC thereby causing the commission to probe him.

The EFCC said in a statement that Obasuyi, who is the Managing Director, Platinum Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Limited and Smart Micro Limited, was found to have allegedly perpetrated several acts of fraud.

Smart Micro was alleged to have approached the mobile company in 2012 for the deployment of bulk purchase solution called “Corporatepay” to facilitate payment of salaries of Delta State employees in microfinance banks.

It was also alleged that the company configured an additional outbound fund transfer solution called “Fundgate” in 2017, which required Smart Micro to maintain a pre-funded settlement account with a first generation bank for settlement of account it had initiated.

However, the company further alleged that the bank, sometime in March 2018, revealed that the settlement account was in debit of N11, 498,944,038.29.

The EFCC said, “In his statement to the commission, confessed to have committed the crime, stating that he created fraudulent and imaginary monies through the aid of Fundgate financial application from the company.

“The commission, in the course of investigation, has recovered a paper version of the programme called MicroSwitchServer1, which he allegedly used to create and post the imaginary monies.

“He also admitted to have diverted to his personal use the sum of N7, 519, 381, 202 out of the total sum of N11, 498,944,038.29.”

The commission said it had  so far recovered the sums of N2, 903,727,563.92, $37, 992.87 and €18,538.09 found in Obasuyi’s accounts in various banks in the country.

It further stated that a total of 20 properties located in various parts of Edo, Rivers and Lagos States and Abuja, worth several millions of naira, had been traced to Obasuyi, which were acquired with proceeds of crime.

The anti-graft agency added, “Obasuyi, who also admitted to have purchased 134 buses from the proceeds of crime, runs the popular Platinum Cruise Transport Company.

“He will soon be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

“He will be brought to court on a later day.” LR News

Former IGP, Mr. Sunday Ehindero

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission  has said that it is  set to resume the prosecution of a former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, at a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, for alleged criminal conversion of money belonging to the Ministry of Police Affairs into personal use while he was at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.

The spokesperson for the ICPC, Mrs. Rasheedat Okoduwa, revealed this to our correspondent in an interview on Thursday.

Okoduwa revealed that the development followed a ruling of the Supreme Court which dismissed the appeal filed by Ehindero challenging the jurisdiction of the commission and that of the FCT High Court to try him.

Ehindero, who succeeded the convicted Tafa Balogun as IG in 2004, was said to have alleged diverted funds from the account of the police.

He was arraigned in 2012 but rather than face the charges in court, he continued to challenge the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court until the matter got to the Supreme Court.

Okoduwa said, “Mr. Ehindero and an accomplice had in 2012 been arraigned on six counts for allegedly conspiring to criminally convert public funds totalling N16,412,315.00 being interests generated from the sum of N557,995,065.00 police money he had placed in two fixed deposit accounts at Wema Bank Plc and the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc.

“The said money was donated by the Bayelsa State Government to the Force at the time to enable it to purchase equipment for proper policing of the state.

“When the principal sum donated was to be transferred to the Ministry of Police Affairs from the accounts, the interests earned were not transferred with it, and that formed the crux of the allegations against the accused.”

She further explained June 6, 2012,  Ehindero filed a motion on notice, by way of preliminary objection, wherein he prayed the trial court for orders: dismissing and/or striking out the amended charge for want of jurisdiction; quashing the amended charge against him for want of competency and; debarring any official of ICPC from prosecuting him for not having constitutional power to do so among others.

In the reserved ruling delivered on September 21, 2012, the trial judge had dismissed the application in its entirety.

Thereafter, the former IG proceeded to the Court of Appeal and again his appeal was dismissed by the appellate court sitting in Abuja on January 14, 2014.

A.D. Yahaya and T. Akomolafe-Wilson, JJCA concurred with the lead judgment of A. A. Adumein, JCA.

Ehindero took the matter to the Supreme Court where he has been asked to face his trial.

The ICPC spokesperson added, “The matter ought to have come up on Wednesday April 11, 2018 for further mention before Justice S.C. Oriji of FCT High Court 10 sitting in Apo but the court did not sit. LR News
