A Non-Governmental Organisation, Ipas Nigeria, has called for the review of the law criminalising abortion in the country.

Sections 228, 229 and 230 of the Criminal Code cover the issue of abortion.
Section 228 provides that that any person providing a miscarriage to a woman is guilty of a felony and liable to up to 14 years of imprisonment.

Shekarau explained that Nigeria’s law on abortion states that an abortion could only be allowed when the life of the woman carrying the pregnancy was in danger.

She urged the Federal Government to decriminalise abortion as provided in both the Criminal and Penal codes.

The gender advocate and human rights activist said that such laws had given way for unsafe abortions.
According to her, many young women desperate to get rid of pregnancies patronises quacks instead of professionals and in the process die, thereby increasing maternal mortality rate in the country.

Shekarau said that because of the position of the law, professionally certified doctors refuse to assist women with unwanted pregnancies.

The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria says plans have been concluded to host a conference of traditional rulers aimed at fostering unity in the country as well as promoting tourism for sustainable development.

Nura Sani Kangiwa the newly-elected Vice President North West of FTAN, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja.

Kangiwa was elected vice president during the FTAN AGM/Elections under the auspices of Society of Tourism Experts and Professionals on June 29 in Abuja.

He said that the conference, tagged: “Peace Through Tourism,” was expected to facilitate tourism initiatives, which would contribute to sustainable tourism development of the country.

He said: “We are going to in the next quarter choose one of the northwestern states to host a conference of traditional rulers for peace through tourism.

“The conference will among other things discuss the role of traditional rulers in the promotion of sustainable tourism development in Nigeria,” he said.

Kangiwa said that Royal Fathers were the custodians of tourism assets in any community and the role of “our traditional institutions cannot be over-emphasised”.

He said the preservation of cultural heritage through the initiative would help to bring about peace in the country through their various communities.

“The conference is based on a vision that tourism is the world largest industry, and our traditional ruler can through their efforts become true Ambassadors for Peace,” he said.

Kangiwa said the association was also planning to partner with Argungu Emirate Council and the Kebbi State Government to revive the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural festival.

He said that FTAN looking was at working with the Argungu fishing festival to revive the event he described as “second to none in Africa”.

He said: “Argungu festival releases a riot of multilayered cultural events that glitter in their gushing profusion and astonished the world in both authenticity and variety of content, this no doubt gave Kebbi State honour, dignity and pride.

“We will therefore work more closely together and make an effort to exchange regular and truthful information that will help to ensure sustainable growth of the Argungu Fishing Festival.

“In line with the mission of the current administration’s call to diversify the economy and lessen the dependence on oil, this tourism product will be revamped so that collectively we can satisfy the yearnings of the people.”

Kangiwa, who also holds the traditional title of “Turakin Kebbi”, noted that the festival was already a tourism product “that is acclaimed worldwide”.

He said: “No doubt UNESCO inscribed it in its prestigious list of Intangible Cultural Heritage for Humanity.

“A study from the World Bank reveals that 80 per cent of international tourists visit destinations on the world heritage list and it is clear that tourism thrives on transparent, honest and effective communication.”

FTAN is the apex body of all tourism associations in Nigeria.

It represents interest of all private sector tourism associations and interacts with government on behalf of all private sector tourism and control for private sector travel and hospitality associations in the country.

FTAN also represents the private sector interest in the Tourism, Travel and Hospitality sectors of the national economy with a view to harnessing the abundant tourism resources in the country.

Chief Eya, ex-secretary general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has been kidnapped in his Enugu residence. The septuagenarian was kidnapped alongside his driver.

His abductors are demanding N15million ransom for his release even as police promise his safe return

Chief Isaac Nduka Eya, former secretary-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, was on Thursday, August 3, kidnapped in Enugu state alongside his driver by unknown gunmen.

According to a report on Vanguard, the abductors of the septuagenarian invaded his residence at the Independence Layout, Enugu and forcefully took him and his driver when his wife was not around.

His abduction was confirmed by the Enugu State Police Relations Officer (PPRO) Ebere Amaraizu who said the police have swung into action to ensure Eya’s safe return.

Speaking on his abduction, Eya’s wife, Prof Regina Eya said she was not at home when the gunmen invaded their residence.

However, she said that the kidnappers had called her to demand a ransom of N15 million. “They came in normally. I don’t know how many they were because I was not around,” Regina added.

Chief Eya is a two-time resident electoral commissioner in Ondo and Anambra states. He also served as one-time commissioner for Education in the old Anambra state. He retired from active public service more than 20 years ago.

The former aviation minister lambasted the president for holding the country to ransom.

Fani Kayode in series of tweets on Saturday August 5 said that no matter how many archbishops visit him and no matter their prayers, the president has no hope.

"When God has rejected u as King no matter how many Archbishops take pictures with u and declare u well u have no hope.

A man that has been on sick leave for 300 out of the 600 days that he has been in power ought to resign. This is a democracy and not a monarchy.

"Buhari is President and a SERVANT of the people. He is NOT a King, a Sheik, an Emir or a Caliph. He is NOT Nigeria and Nigeria is NOT him," he said.

While many Nigerians were happy that his health condition has improved, many are of the opinion that that the president has no business in London no matter the health condition. Some also called on the Archbishop to prevail on him to resign due to his ill health.
