The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the All Progressives Congress over its national convention after clashes broke out among delegates from Imo and Delta states.

According to a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, the convention was not free and fair.

Rather, the opposition party called it “a mockery of democracy and assault on the sensibility of Nigerians”.

“The open intimidation and physical assault on aspirants and delegates to the convention further confirm the desperation by President Muhammadu Buhari’s camp to seize the APC’s presidential ticket, for which they have resorted to imposing pliable officials who had been handed the directives to muzzle other presidential aspirants in the APC ahead of the party’s Presidential primary,” the statement read in part.

Saturday’s National Convention of the ruling party had been held amid tight security with 5,000 policemen deployed as wells hundreds of security personnel from other agencies.

But the PDP said the convention was marked by intimidation.

“Delegates and other members of the APC were horrified when aspirants to various party offices were being threatened, harassed and in some cases, paid and handed written orders to mount the stage and announce their withdrawal,” it claimed.

The PDP called on Nigerians and members of the international community to note events at the convention, saying those behind developments at the event were “bent on destroying” the country’s democracy.

“It is instructive to state that the APC convention directly reflects the confusion, intimidations, violations and descent to fascism, that have characterised governance in our nation in the last three years,” it added.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has said that there will be no use of the electronic voting system in the 2019 general elections.

Professor Yakubu said this on Friday while addressing participants at the International Press Institute world conference which took place in Abuja.

“There is no electronic balloting in 2019. In other words, there will be no electronic voting in the next general election but technology is already being used in many aspects of the processes.

“Electronic voting should be the ultimate step in the chain involving five inter-related processes,” he said.

The occasion also saw the adoption of the revised 2018 edition of the Nigerian Media Code of election coverage by media stakeholders across the country, with the European Union pledging to support free, fair and transparent elections in Nigeria.

Some delegates at the ongoing All Progressives National Convention have engaged each other in a free for all.

Trouble first started among delegates from Imo State before spreading to the Delta State delegates.

While the clash between delegates from Imo was brought under control by security operatives after a while, that between the Delta delegates was more intense with chairs being hurled and several people sustaining injuries.

This occurred despite the heavy security presence at the venue of the convention which has President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and the who is who of the party.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is holding a National Convention organised with funds stolen from public coffers.

The PDP in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, also claimed that the APC has become a laughing stock among Nigerians following the inability to resist the imposition of an individual overburdened by corruption allegations as its new leader.

“It is sickening to note that the entire APC Convention is a celebration of corruption organised to crown dishonest and fraudulent individuals, who ordinarily should be guests at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) offices across the nation.

“With this, the APC has finally capped itself a party where alleged treasury looters are robed as kings and where all decency have been thrown overboard for official hooliganism,” Ologbondiyan said.

The PDP also challenged the APC to deny its allegations that the funds used in organising the convention were siphoned from some federal agencies.

“Our investigation had since revealed that governors of APC-controlled states were coerced to divert huge sums from federal bailout funds meant for the well being of the people as well as monies budgeted for development projects in various communities, to fund a failed convention,” PDP alleged.

The APC National convention is holding today, Saturday, June 23, at the Eagles Square in Abuja with 65 positions to be filled. 23 of the positions are however unopposed, thereby leaving the contest for 42 aspirants.

About 7,000 delegates are expected to vote. LR News

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka  said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is the least worthy of former Heads of State to champion the political recovery process of the nation”.
He said by doing so, Obasanjo has “crossed the red line”.
Soyinka  stated this in Abuja at a Gala Dinner and Award Night hosted by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture as part of programmes of the 67th World Congress of the International Press Institute (IPI).
Soyinka, a Guest of Honour at the dinner, described  Obasanjo as  a “hypocrite”
He said he would soon launch a book where he articulated his claims and also made a call on the need for the younger generation to take over the reins of the country.
“I have brought out a publication which title is in Latin but it means “Who watches the Watchmen” .
“That publication is coming out simply because I will like to see new blood in government in this nation.
“I think this corrupt and hypocritical geriatrics should stop recycling themselves.
“They should stop trying to co-opt their former cronies to take over the reins of governance in this country.
“On July 4 at Freedom Park in Lagos, the pamphlet will be unveiled and will confront Obasanjo with his crimes of the past which incidentally are not being newly articulated.
“I say again that people are their own greatest enemies, because they forget very fast. Obasanjo is the greatest hypocritical leader this nation has ever produced,” he said.
The Professor of Literature and a critic said contrary to claims by some people he has “nothing personal against late Sani Abacha” a former Military Head of State.
Soyinka was responding to a questioner who wanted to know why the Nobel Laureate always displays open hatred for Abacha.
“You say I don’t leave Abacha alone even after death, it is not true.
“If I am walking through the street, and I see a structure raised in honour of a torturer, a murderer and a thief so recognised by the entire world that we are still chasing his loots all over the world, I cannot keep quiet.
“If I see a structure or monument in honour of that person, I have the responsibility to tell whoever did so that you cannot be serious with fighting corruption,” he said.
Soyinka congratulated the Nigerian Journalists for bringing IPI congress to the country for the first time adding that the timing was remarkable.
“The timing is remarkable in the sense that IPI is being hosted by a nation whose current President, Muhammadu Buhari, is somebody I refer to as born again Democrat.
“Not so long ago, as a military leader, he came out openly that he will tamper with the press freedom and he matched his words with deeds.
“He jailed a couple of journalists for sticking to the ethics of their profession
“Here you are today, that same president is now actually trying very hard and most successfully to respect the freedom of expression.
“It goes to show that all is not lost in this nation,” he said
Soyinka rated the Buhari Administration 55 per cent in press freedom and freedom of speech.
To improve on the rating, he suggested elimination of “secret, subtle and self censorship” as well as often submission to pressure.
“For instance, we cannot continue to hide under the subtle threat of – do not heat up the polity- even when we know that the polity deserved not just to be heated up, but to be fired”.
“If we disregard that, which is a grey area, I am optimistic that we will in a couple of years attain 75 per cent guaranteed in freedom of speech,” he said.
He also called on journalists to continue to discharge their roles with courage and improve on investigative journalism.
Soyinka added that the whistle blowing policy should be sustained so that the criminal elements will understand that the hiding zones are shrinking everyday.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has deployed 5,000 policemen, two helicopters and six Armoured Personnel Carriers for the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) holding today in Abuja.

Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, said the IGP directed the implementation of the robust security arrangement to ensure a hitch-free convention.

“A total number of 5,000 Police Personnel comprising, the Police Mobile Force Unit have been deployed under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Department of Operations, to ensure adequate security for all the accredited participants at the convention,” he said on Friday.

Moshood also explained that the operation would involve officers from the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Special Protection Unit (SPU), the Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD), the Police Mounted Troop, The Dog Section (K9), and the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID).

While the police would allow only accredited delegates accredited party officials bearing the APC clearance/identification tags will be allowed into the Eagles Square venue of the exercise, security coverage has been beefed up all the accreditation centres.

Moshood, who is also a Deputy Commissioner of Police, is optimistic that the police would collaborate with other security agencies to ensure a hitch-free convention.

The police spokesman also reiterated the commitment of the force in maintaining law and order during the exercise.

Moshood, however, warned individuals, who intend to cause mayhem to steer clear from the venue as the long arm of the law would catch up with them.

He assured that the police officers deployed would be civil, polite and firm in the discharge of their duties during the convention.
