The United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF) says it will distribute 358,134 insecticide treated nets in four local government areas of Borno for malaria prevention and control.
UNICEF’s Communication Specialist, Kusali Kubwalo, said in a statement in Maiduguri that the nets would be distributed to children under the age of five, expectant and breastfeeding mothers.
According to Kubwalo, “The exercise will be conducted in collaboration between the UNICEF, Borno State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHCDA) and the State Ministry of Health.
“The nets which were procured with support of the British Department for International Development (DFID), will be distributed to deserving families in Bayo, Biu, Kwaya Kusar and Hawul Local Government Areas.”
She said the beneficiaries would be sensitised to ensure effective utilisation of the nets.
Also, she said that the organisation had so far distributed 45,868 treated nets in the Shani Local Government Area of the state.
On the importance of the exercise, she said: “The exercise is designed to ensure the survival and protection of children, pregnant women and members of their families against malaria.
“Malaria is endemic in Nigeria and considered to be one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in children and pregnant women.”
Mr Geoffrey Ijumba, UNICEF’s Chief, Borno Field office, said: “Preventing malaria is critical to improving nutrition, maternal and child health.
“Pregnant women and their babies are especially at risk, since malaria infection during pregnancy can lead to stillbirth, low birth weight and other complications.”

The Lagos State Government on Sunday gave a 30-day ultimatum to all articulated vehicles coming into the state to obtain the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) certificate of road worthiness or face sanctions.
The state government also directed fuel tanker drivers to henceforth ply the designated trailer route -Apapa/Oworonshoki expressway via Ogudu to the Lagos/Ibadan expressway.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson, gave the directive at a news conference in Alausa, Ikeja, alongside members of NUPENG and the Container Truck Association of Nigeria on development arising from the fuel tanker explosion on Thursday.
Lawanson said that 10 operational centres had been designated to process applications immediately, while new centres would be established quickly on the the Lagos/Ibadan expressway to cope with the expected demand for the service.
He said the centres include: Berger Ojodu, Odogunyan Ikorodu, Agric/Ishawo Road, Ikorodu, Worksyard, PWD, Shogunle, NCI Gbagada, VIS Yard, Oko-Afo, Badagry, VIS Yard, Ayobo in Ipaja, Test Centre in Badagry, VIS Yard, Epe and VIS Yard, Oko-Oba Abbatoir.
Lawanson said that government would embark on awareness campaign to persuade all vehicle owners to obtain MOT road worthiness certificate.
“We hereby call on motorists and the general public to join hands with us to prevent avoidable deaths due to the presence of vehicles unfit to ply the roads.
“Let us protect each other by asking our friends to save lives by obtaining their road worthiness certificates, ‘’ he said.
Lawanson said that the state government in 2017 upgraded vehicle testing operations and launched the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centres to ensure that vehicles which ply the roads and highways were road worthy.
“This measure recorded positive results. Between April 1, 2017 and May 2018, a total of 178, 267 vehicles were tested,’’ he said.
Lawanson said that investigation conducted so far by the state government indicated that the truck involved in the explosion NSR 888 YC, was registered in Kano State and had changed ownership 13 times since purchase.
“This truck was designed as a 14,959kg, approximately 15 tonnes drilling rig with low bed but was converted in Nigeria from a drilling rig to fuel carrier to carry 30 tonnes.
“From this preliminary investigation, the truck should not have been loaded to the weight of 30 tonnes, which is twice its pulling capacity,’’ he said.
Lawanson said that further investigation into the current ownership of the fuel tanker and other related details was progressing.
He said that facts obtained in the course of investigation had compelled the review of the legal, economic and social framework of the current management of traffic involving tankers loaded with fuel and other cargoes within the state.
Lawanson said that the government was also exploring alternative modes of transportation of petroleum products to separate passenger traffic from cargo movement within the metropolis in the interest of public safety.
The South West Chairman of NUPENG, Mr Tayo Aboyeji, while commiserating with the victims’ families, said that the union was in support of the government to put an end to tanker accidents in the state.
Latest Reality Metro reports that the fuel tanker explosion at the Otedola Bridge inward Ojodu Berger on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, left about 54 vehicles burnt, nine people dead and an unspecified number of people sustained various degrees of injuries.

Interpol is on the manhunt for a notorious career thief, Redoine Faid, after he pulled off a daring jailbreak on Sunday, fleeing a prison in the Paris area by helicopter.
Faid, 46,  was once France’s most wanted criminal.
He broke out of the prison in Reau in the city’s southeastern suburbs within minutes, helped by a number of heavily-armed men, sources close to the case said.
The escape came after an appeals court sentenced him to 25 years for masterminding a May 2010 botched armed robbery, in which a policewoman was killed.
Redoine Faid: escapes prison by helicopter

Faid fled on Sunday with three accomplices, according to the sources.
The helicopter was later found in a northeastern suburb of the French capital, they said, adding that a police search has been launched across the entire Paris region.
It is the second time Faid has pulled off a spectacular jailbreak — in 2013, he blasted his way out of a prison in northern France using dynamite.
He had been in prison since mid-2011 for breaking the terms of his parole over past convictions for bank robberies and brazen heists of cash-in-transit vehicles.
Armed with a pistol, he briefly took four guards hostage before escaping in a waiting getaway car. All the hostages were released unharmed.
Faid was eventually recaptured six weeks later at a hotel in an industrial area on the outskirts of Paris.
A woman working at the hotel told AFP at the time that Faid’s accomplice had paid for the room in cash and that the two men had been there for several days.
Prior to the 2013 escape, Faid had been released from a previous stint of a decade behind bars after convincing parole officials that he regretted his criminal past and was determined to start afresh.
Faid, who grew up in tough immigrant suburbs outside Paris, has made several television appearances and co-authored two books about his delinquent youth and rise as a criminal in the Paris suburbs.
He said his life of crime was inspired by American films such as “Scarface” and “Heat”.

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and paraded five members of proscribed IPOB linked to the attack on the home of the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nwodo.
The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mr. Danmallam Mohammed, explained that after the initial attack on the home, the suspects continued to harass Nwodo with SMS messages.
“After the incidence, they have been sending text messages to telephone threatening his life, telling him that this is just the beginning. Through the course of our investigation, we discovered that they are members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).”
Mohammed said that the suspects were arrested at different locations of the state and in Lagos.
The arrest comes two months after some unidentified persons threw an explosive device into Nwodo’s home at Ukehe, in Igboetiti Local Government Area of the state.
Police investigators believe the suspects “successfully attacked the residence of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Nwodo on April 29, 2018”.
According to the police commissioner, the suspects continue to threaten the Ohanaeze leader after the attack.
He said: “Enugu State Police Command recently smashed five different criminal gangs through intelligence-led policing.
“They dropped Intelligence Explosives Device (IED) at Nwodo’s residence. Through intelligence lead policing, two of the suspects were arrested.
While reiterating his commitment to flushing out crimes from Enugu State, Mohammed warned that the police would deal decisively with anyone caught trying to disturb the peace of the state.
In April, Mohammed had vowed to unmask those behind the attack, which the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, described the explosion as ugly, evil and outrageous.
Ekweremadu had called on security agencies to get to the root of this devilish act and ensure that the culprits and masterminds are brought to book.
The country home of Nwodo at Ukehe in Enugu State, was rocked by bomb blast in April, according to the police, with Improvised Explosive Device, IED, which was thrown into his house by unknown persons from outside his compound.
The explosion destroyed part of his building, left the ceiling and windows of the house shattered. LR News
