President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja said Nigerian government remains deeply grateful to the government and people of Switzerland for their support in resuscitating the economy, especially the return of stolen funds.
Receiving Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Mr George Steiner, at the Presidential Villa, President Buhari said the return of stolen funds and interventions in the crisis in the North East further indicate the Swiss government’s commitment to the development of Nigeria.
“We are grateful to the Swiss government for allowing illegally stolen funds to be brought back to Nigeria,’’ he said.
The President noted that the facilitating roles the Swiss government had been playing in the North East, particularly in reaching out to Internally Displaced Persons, had been most helpful, adding that bilateral relations between both countries will continue to be strengthened.
The Swiss Ambassador said his government will always be disposed to supporting Nigeria in ensuring peace in the country, especially in the North East.
“We have strong and solid relations with Nigeria. It’s an honour and privilege for us to contribute to issues of importance in the country,’’ he added.
Steiner told President Buhari that the Swiss government looks forward to having stronger relations on economic issues with Nigeria that will be mutually beneficial, pointing out that the ongoing reforms in the country already send right signals to investors.
President Buhari, who also received Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Belgium, Dr Daniel Dargent, said feasibility studies to revamp the Lake Chad Basin will require a diversion of River Ubangi in the Congo Basin.
The President said the diversion of River Ubangi will improve the livelihood of more than 40 million people who survive on Lake Chad Basin, urging the Belgian government to support the negotiation.
In his remarks, the Ambassador of Belgium said his government will support an initiative that will improve the livelihood of people.
“We are in a global world and we need to start evolving more on issues that directly touch lives, especially in supporting Nigeria which will one day become a Permanent member of the Security Council’’ he said.
While receiving his Letters of Credence, President Buhari congratulated the Ambassador of Hungary, Dr Sandor Gyorgy Beer, on his posting to Nigeria, urging him to sustain the healthy relations that had existed between both countries for many years.
The Hungarian Ambassador said relations between both countries had been strong over many years, noting that he will work towards improving it, especially on economic issues and sports.
Dr Beer said Nigeria and Hungary already had a strong pedigree in sports, especially in football, that can be improved, assuring the President that he will work towards more exchanges between both countries by setting up a football academy in Nigeria that will promote matches, trainings and skills development.
“Nigeria is a great country and it’s an honour to be here,’’ he said.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it has launched a gun-boat in Cross River to enhance maritime patrol and check cases of illegal migration and child theft across the sea.
Mr Felix Uche, the State Comptroller of NIS, said this on Tuesday during the launch of the boat at the Nigerian Navy Jetty in Calabar.
Uche said that the boat was procured by the Comptroller-General of NIS, Mr Mohammed Babandede and distributed to all commands that have maritime boundary with other countries to enhance sea patrols.
According to him, 16 NIS personnel were trained by officials of the Nigerian Navy on maritime operations and patrols for a period of two months.
‘‘The launch of this boat will help us to patrol the water ways by ensuring that illegal migrants do not come into Nigeria through the sea without valid papers.
‘‘In the past few weeks, the Navy has arrested some boats with illegal migrants and handed them over to us. After profiling, we saw that majority of them were coming into Nigeria illegally.
‘‘More so, now that we have crisis in Cameroon; this gun-boat will help us to reduce the large illegal movements of Cameroonians into Nigeria,’’ he said.
He thanked the naval authorities for the training of the NIS personnel, adding that the synergy between both forces was cordial and rewarding.
Speaking, the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship Victory, Commodore Julius Nwagu, said that the Nigerian Navy held in high esteem the issue of synergy.
Nwagu explained that the navy had tried at all levels to partner with sister agencies in the provision of security for all Nigerians.
He maintained that the navy had enjoyed the partnership with the NIS in the state, noting that the NIS personnel were well behaved during the training.
‘‘I am not in doubt that men of the NIS benefited from the training they have undergone in the past two months by the navy.
‘‘One boat is not enough by our standard operating procedures. As you go out at sea, each time you need our assistance in ensuring that the migration laws are upheld, the navy will support you.
‘‘We are ready anytime to partner with the NIS because the navy value synergy. Your boat will be secured and made available at any time you need it for operation,’’ he said.

Mozambique's government has discovered more than 30,000 ghost workers on the civil service payroll.

The civil service minister said some were paid for jobs they had not done, others were dead or fictitious.

The fraud had cost the government around $250m (£198m) between 2015 and 2017, Carmelita Namashulua said.

She said the government recognised that state corruption was still a major problem in Mozambique, one of the world's poorest nations.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is to liase with the International Trade Union Congress (ITUC) to place names of governors in the states where workers are being owed salaries and pensions for several months on a “watch list”.
NAN reports that the ITUC is the world’s largest trade union federation.
It was formed on Nov. 1, 2006, out of the merger of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the World Confederation of Labour.
Mr Ayuba Wabba, President of the NLC, made this known while addressing the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) at its 17th anniversary on Tuesday Abuja.
He said that aside  “naming and shaming” these governors, the NLC would soon direct Nigeria workers to monitor various airports in the country to stop such governors who may have completed their term from fleeing the country
“We will instruct workers at the nation’s airports to disallow and disgrace any governors trying to leave the country in order to enjoy themselves overseas.
“We have issued statements to these governors owing salaries, informing them that they cannot go anywhere to enjoy the monies they have carted away.
“They will be disgraced and chased away,” he said.
He said: “instead of using the money to make life good and build the country for the good of everybody, a few elites chose to embezzle what is meant for all, for their personal use.”
Wabba, however, assured pensioners that the NLC would not relent its effort to ensure the issue of pension and minimum wage were addressed.
He said that if the government must address the issue of pensioners, it must address the welfare of pensioners.
This, he said would ensure that workers desist from looting.
Wabba commended President Muhammad Buhari for the payment of pensions arrears for the Nigeria Airways workers and the 33 per cent increment of their pension.

The Executive Secretary, Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Abdulkadir Saidu,  says the Federal Government has no plans to increases the price of  Premium Motor Spirit known as petrol.
Saidu reinstated in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja that the retail price of petrol remained at the subsisting price cap of N145 per litre.
He urged Nigerians to ignore the growing speculation on the purported imminent increase in the pump price.
The executive secretary advised marketers to ensure that there was no price distortion in their respective retail outlets.
He added that PPPRA would continue to carry out its oversight function of monitoring exercise in depots and in all filling stations across the country.
This, he said, was to ensure adherence to the regulated price and to nip in the bud other forms of sharp practices at retail outlets.
The executive secretary further warned that adequate sanctions awaited any erring filling station.
He commended the petroleum product marketers in the country for embracing dialogue with the federal government to resolve the issues arising from payment of the outstanding fuel subsidy claims.
Saidu said that embarking on strike was not always the best option to address any industrial dispute, irrespective of the circumstances adding that the multiplier effects were always too much to bear.
The executive secretary appealed to the leadership of the oil marketers’ associations to cooperate with government to find a workable solution to the issues emanating from the payment of subsidy arrears.
He noted that PPPRA would continue to support, cooperate and collaborate with marketers to ensure conducive industrial climate where the best of the oil and gas sector could be showcased.
Saidu also assured Nigerians of PPPRA’s total commitment to service delivery and uninterrupted petroleum product supply and distribution especially during this festive period and beyond.
He appealed to motorists and other PMS consumers to desist from panic-buying, as PPPRA was working hard with other agencies of government to ensure adequate supply and distribution of petroleum products nationwide.

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has called for the establishment of state police to curb crime in the country.
Ajimobi made the call at the inauguration of the Oyo State Safe City Control Centre aimed at improving the security network in the state.
“As important as concepts such as democracy is, go around the world and see the best of democracies, there is none of them without its state police, all the states in America, France and other countries.
“State police will be staffed with people from the local communities where they have deep knowledge about the terrain and the inhabitants therein. That is why no crime goes unsolved in the western world,” he said.
Ajimobi said that the control centre was one of his administration’s efforts to ensure the restoration and sustenance of peace in the state.
“Before our administration came on board in 2011, what we had in the state was hooliganism, violence, brigandage and killings. On assumption, we swung into action and started from the restoration of peace and security.
“Our immediate effort in 2011 at stopping crime and criminal tendencies yielded positive results as our special security outfit was instituted.
“If we have not achieved anything since we came on board, we have achieved peace and security which is the major purpose of government,” he said.
He said that the efforts accounted for the state being ranked as one of the most peaceful, adding it was also adjudged one of the five topmost states in the Ease of Doing Business by Nigeria Bureau Statistics.
Ajimobi commended security agencies in the state for working with resilience to reduce crime in spite of poor logistics as well as lack of technology and database in Nigeria.
He assured the people of his administration’s commitment toward combating crime with the use of technology.
Mr Abiodun Odude, the Commissioner of Police in the state, commended Ajimobi for his support to security agencies, adding that this had made their work easier.
“If not for the intervention of the incumbent governor in providing operational vehicles, vehicle batteries, tyres and other needed materials like armoured personnel carrier, the security apparatus would have been grounded in the state.
“No security work can be done without needed materials. OYSSTF(Oyo State Security Trust Fund)  has helped refurbish three armoured personnel carriers out of the 12  we have and I can assure you that one APC is equal to 100 policemen.
“So we must show our gratitude to the present administration for the support given over time,” he said.
Chief Bayo Adelabu, the Chairman of OYSSTF Board, said the Safe City Project was another landmark achievement by the administration.
He said the monitoring capability of the CCTV technology pre-empted crime in notable strategic locations in the state.
“Nobody will commit crime if they know they will be apprehended;  the realisation that you are being watched is a measure of deterrence against crime.
He commended corporate organisations for their support, calling on others that were yet to contribute as well as private individuals to support the initiative.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the control centre is the hub for the close  Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed in some parts of Ibadan metropolis such as  Sango, Mokola and Challenge.
