From Left: Vision Bearer, Justice Must Prevail Party (JMPP), Apostle Chukwu Ezuzolugo; Chairman Board of Trustees of JMPP, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife; JMPP founding Member, Chief Serah Jubril; Chairman of the Party, Dr Olusegun Ijagbemi; Deputy National Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammed; Acting National Secretary, Mr David Olagoke and Deputy Chairman of Board of Directors of JMPP, Mr Bassey Bassey, at the inaugural news conference of the Party in Abuja on Thursday

Justice Must Prevail Party (JMPP) on Thursday said if elected into power in 2019, it would construct perimeter fence around Nigeria and change the name of the country and the currency.
Acting National Chairman of the Party, Dr Olusegun Ijagbemi, revealed at a news conference in Abuja.
He said that the need to change the name of the country and its currency was divinely revealed to the leadership of the party, adding the changes were important if Nigeria must make progress.
According to Ijagbemi, the 14th pillar of our party is to change the name of Nigeria to Pisonia and its currency from Naira to Pison.
“It is a miracle that the leadership of this party got a wind of how the entire African nation is being impoverished with their currency.
“There are people outside Nigeria printing our currency and they have agents among us, including our political leaders.
“They are printing money and they have agents in CBN and throughout Africa. We brought this information to Nigeria that they are destroying our economy,’’ he said.
The chairman added that about six months ago, the CBN revealed to the National Assembly that more than 20 per cent of Nigeria’s currency was fake.
Ijagbemi said that promoting citizens’ welfare and security of lives and property would be one of the major concerns of the party, if elected.
He said that the party would use technology to monitor the country’s borders and that security forces would be highly motivated.
“This party is going to fence Nigeria and create only regulated route for people to come in and go out of the country.
“You can no longer move boys or girls across the border with trailer and then say you have captured or recovered them.
“There will be no need for people sleeping with their hearts panting. You cannot just come into the country, invade it and steal our oil.’’
Ijagbemi stated that JMPP government would strengthen the immigration laws, and that border control would be exercised maximally.
He said that citizenship laws would also be reviewed to meet the exigencies of current happenings in the world.
Ijagbemi decried the level of unemployment in the country, saying it was unacceptable, “considering the fact that the nation was reputed as one of the richest in the world in human and natural resources’’.
To address the challenge, he said that JMPP would equip Technical Colleges and Polytechnics to provide high-level manpower to form the backbone of technological and industrial development.
“The party will also encourage the formation of new industries in line with modern technological trends using the products of the revamped technical schools and polytechnics.
“Skills development centres will be established in all local government councils of the country. ‘’
He added that JMPP government would ensure that international agreements negotiated and entered into by the Federal Government were in tandem with the interests of Nigerians. LR News

UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged countries to invest in family-friendly policies that support early childhood development.

Mohamed Fall, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, made the call in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.

He emphasised that such investment should include paid paternity and maternity leave, free pre-primary education and paid breastfeeding breaks.

He added that “implementing national family-friendly policies that support early childhood development, including paid paternity leave, the government can provide parents the time, resources and information to take care of their children’’.

Quoting recent analysis conducted by UNICEF, Fall noted that two in three children below the age of one lived in countries where fathers were not entitled to a ‘single day’ of paid paternity leave by law.

He identified the new analysis as part of the organisation’s “Super Dads” campaign aimed at breaking barriers that prevented fathers from playing active role in their young children’s development.

The UNICEF representative explained that the campaign focused on the importance of love, play, protection and good nutrition for healthy development of children’s brain.

He specifically noted that about 90 million children lived in such countries where their fathers were not entitled to such pays.

According to him, positive and meaningful interaction with mothers and fathers from the very beginning helps to shape children’s brain and development for life, making them healthier, happier and increases their ability to learn.

He noted that “evidence suggests that when there is bond between fathers and their babies from the beginning of life, they are more likely to play active roles in the children’s development.

“Research also suggests that when children positively interact with their fathers, they have better psychological health, self-esteem and life-satisfaction in the long-term.

“A total of 92 countries, including Nigeria and India which have high infant population do not have national policies in place that ensure new fathers get adequate paid time off with their newborn babies.

“In comparison, countries with high infant populations, including Brazil and Democratic Republic of the Congo have national paid paternity leave policies albeit offering relatively short-term entitlements.

“The government’s recent commitment to extend maternity leave from 12 to 16 weeks indicates that the momentum for family-friendly policies in Nigeria is growing.

“Investments in the provision of support services to caregivers, as well as quality pre-primary education and good nutrition for children are investments in healthy and productive future for Nigerian generations,’’ Fall said.

Taekwondo graduating students at the Korean Cultural Centre

Han Sungrae, Director, Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) on Thursday called on Universal Basic Education (UBE) to ensure establishment of taekwondo clubs in schools in Nigeria.
Sungrae made the call in Abuja at the Taekwondo Graduation and Promotion of FCT schools.
He said that introduction of taekwondo clubs in schools would help to enshrine the culture of the sports among young Nigerians.
Sungrae said that KCCN with support from Korea’s Taekwondowon and Korea Sports Promotion Foundation in partnership with the FCT UBE board in 2014 introduced taekwondo in public schools in FCT.
According to him, the aim is to assist in grooming future taekwondo champions from Nigeria.
“The centre dispatches future taekwondo instructors to the four approved schools to teach taekwondo to students periodically,’’ he said.

He said that Taekwondowon and Korea Sports Promotion Foundation provide taekwondo equipment and kits for use in the training of students.
“Korea’s proud cultural heritage resides in Taekwondowon, the driving force of spiritual and physical growth beyond Korea to the world and the hub from where the universalisation of the taekwondo spirit and values begin.
Congratulating the graduating students, the representative of the Chairman of FCT UBE, Kalu Ifeanyi, said that the event showed that the bilateral relationship between the two countries was strong.
He said that the students performance in taekwondo would help to improve their academic performance.
Ifeanyi said that the request by the KCCN director would be related to the chairman and necessary actions taken to ensure its implementation.
No fewer than 68 students graduated while eight of the graduating students received Awards of Excellency.

A mosque attack in South Africa’s Western Cape province left three people dead and more injured, the second such incident in the country.
The solo killer stabbed two people to death early on Thursday while they were praying in Malmesbury, about 43 miles from Cape Town, the South African Police Service said.
The suspect was then shot by police. The case has been handed to the Hawks, an elite law-enforcement unit, for further investigation.
The attack followed an assault by three men on a mosque last month in Durban, South Africa’s third-biggest city, which left one man dead and two in a serious condition.
While Africa’s most industrialised economy had long struggled with violent crime, attacks motivated by religion are relatively unusual.
“This should be taken very seriously, but our sense is it’s domestic in origin — no organization is doing this,” Frans Cronje, chief executive officer of the South African Institute of Race Relations, said by phone.
“It may be that a handful of scholars have been able to take advantage of those in tough economic circumstances.”
The attack came at the end of Ramadan. Eid Eid-al-Fitr., the Islamic religious holiday that follows the month of fasting, may start as soon as Friday.
“The Muslim Judicial Council is shocked to its core to learn of a brutal attack in Malmesbury,” the religious body said on its Facebook page. “We urge the community not to jump to any conclusions until clarity can be given.”

Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May

Britain said it is easing visa rules to address a shortage of doctors and also encourage tech entrepreneurs as it prepares a new post-EU immigration system, an issue that drove the Brexit vote.

Prime Minister Theresa May’s government said on Thursday that doctors and nurses working in the state-run National Health Service (NHS) would be excluded from an annual cap on skilled workers from outside the European Union.

May introduced the cap in 2010 when she was interior minister but has faced growing demands from the healthcare sector to review it due to a shortage of staff that has left hundreds of NHS posts unfilled.

The annual limit of 20,700 on all non-EU skilled workers, broken down into monthly quotas, has been breached every month since December.

The British Medical Journal says this has led to more than 1,500 doctors with job offers being refused visas in recent months.

Many fear the shortages will only become worse when Britain leaves the European Union and the bloc’s citizens lose their automatic right to work in the UK.

EU nationals currently make up almost 10 percent of doctors and seven percent of nurses, according to a parliamentary report.

May has promised to end EU freedom of movement after Brexit, but she has yet to publish her plans for a new immigration system.

She wants migration controlled but says Britain should also attract the “best and the brightest” from around the world.

To that effect, on Wednesday the government announced a new “start-up” visa for technology entrepreneurs, which will replace a visa route that was previously only open to graduates.

 Turn the tap off

The promise of ending the huge influx of EU migration into Britain in recent years was a key element of the campaign for Brexit and remains a central issue for many voters.

“They are not against all migration, but they want a sense that we can turn the tap on and off when we choose to do so,” opposition Labour MP Caroline Flint said this week.

Migration Watch, a pressure group demanding tighter controls, reacted with disappointment to the government’s changes on doctors visas.

“It may be necessary, at least temporarily, to cope with the prospect of Brexit, but in the longer term the answer has to be to train our own medics and not take them from countries that need them far more than we do,” chairman Andrew Green told the Daily Telegraph.

The government is seeking to train more staff, funding an extra 1,500 medical school places from September, but critics note it will be years before those students are qualified.

After Brexit, hardliners want to exclude all low-skilled migration from the EU and beyond, and tighten restrictions on skilled workers.

But others believe the answer is a more flexible approach.

The government has a blanket annual target to reduce all non-EU net migration, including foreign students drawn to Britain’s elite universities, to less than 100,000.

Critics, who reportedly including some of May’s ministers, argue this target is arbitrary and also unrealistic, with the figure currently standing at 244,000.

In a recent report, the left-wing think tank IPPR suggested migration targets for different skill levels, and visas tied to work for a particular employer in a particular region to help spread economic growth across Britain.

Businesses are concerned that a rapid reduction in migration after Brexit could leave them without the staff they need.

Some farmers have already warned that a drop in EU seasonal workers since the referendum vote in 2016 has left food rotting in the fields.

Matthew Fell of the CBI business lobby group welcomed the changes to doctors’ visas as recognition of the role of “international skills and talent”.

“A successful migration system should focus on people’s contribution to the UK economy and society, not numbers,” he said.

Wood-fire stove

Inhaling smoke from the indoor wood fires may not only cause asthma and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, but can also enhance the risk of the onset of dementia, Swedish researchers  said.
Researchers at the Umea University in northern Sweden who studied air quality in homes where wood-fire stoves are used and found that i found that indoor wood fires carry as great a risk of causing dementia as traffic emissions,
“We have seen that people who live in areas where wood-fire stoves are common run a greater risk of being affected, and that also goes for people who live next to someone who uses wood-fire stoves,” said Anna Oudin, a researcher in occupational and environmental medicine at Umea University’s department of public health and clinical medicine.
The risk for residents living in areas with the highest rate of smoke from wood fires to be hit by dementia, or dementia-related diseases, was 30 per cent higher compared to other residents in the town of Umea.
In households that had their own wood-fire stoves the risk was 70 per cent higher.
“In Umea, quite a lot of people use wood-fire stoves because they are regarded as climate-friendly,” said Oudin, adding that her and her colleagues’ study is the first to produce good and reliable data on the effects of wood smoke.
The study covers a 15-year period and compares the rate of particles from traffic and from wood fires in residential areas in Umea where 1,800 people with dementia have lived.
Several thousand Swedes die every year as a result of pollution and people who live in areas with worse air quality run a greater risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases.
Emissions from traffic are regarded to be the most harmful form of pollution, but locally wood-fire stoves can have just as big an impact on health, according to the Umea University study. Xinhua/LR News

The Presidential Aspirant of Alliance for New Nigeria, Thomas-Wilson Ikubese.

Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, the Presidential Aspirant of Alliance for New Nigeria on Thursday, said one of the lists of priorities on his manifesto is to provide uninterrupted power supply in Nigeria within six months.

Ikubese, who was a guest on Channels Television Breakfast Programme, Sunrise Daily also took a swipe at previous administrations noting that any serious government can achieve this within six months.

“Any government that is serious within six months will provide uninterrupted power supply. That is one of my manifestos,” he said adding that this is possible if Nigerian Government decentralise power.

“Each state will generate power and transmit to the end users without passing through the national grid, it is as simple as that.”
Ikubese stressed further the importance of decentralising power, according to him, six months is even too long to achieve uninterrupted power supply in Nigeria if some processes are duly followed.

“President Buhari was lampooning former President Obasanjo that he spent $16billion and where is the light. If President Buhari himself spend $100billion with what is on the ground, we won’t see light. We must decentralise power,” he said.

Giving a further breakdown of the process that must be followed, Ikubese highlighted some processes currently being followed but which he claimed would not solve the challenge of power supply in Nigeria.

“We have a provision that if you generate more than 10megawatts you must pass it into the national grid. We must take that off.

“Generate where you are, transmit irrespective of the megawatts that you generate. Six months is too long.”

The Presidential aspirant also recalled that Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola once made this statement of uninterrupted power supply achievable in Nigeria within six months.

“Remember that when the All Progressives Congress (APC) was an opposition party, Mr Raji Fashola mentioned that any government that is serious will solve the problem of power within six months. It is feasible, he was referring to gas turbine then.

“It is very simple and I am repeating it, within six months we have an uninterrupted power supply, that is what they use in Tanzania, in Egypt and Angola. Go to Port Harcourt refinery, that is what is been used. So why can’t we do that?”

Four men, who allegedly defiled and impregnated a 15- year-old girl, were on Thursday remanded at Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Henry Edmond, 47, metal fabricator; Richard Effiong, 22, businessman; Simeon Michael, 30, self employed; and Ashumu Muhammed, 33, security guard are being tried for defilement.
Magistrate Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi refused to take the plea of the accused but ordered that they should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“Based on the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. Bail will be at the discretion of the court.
“Case file should be documented and sent to the office of the DPP for advice,” she said.
The accused committed the offences between December 2016 and May 2018 at different parts of Ajah and Lekki, Lagos, the Police prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court.
He said that the accused unlawfully assaulted the girl by penetrating into her private parts on separate occasions.
“The accused have been having sexually intercourse with the girl which resulted in pregnancy.”
Ayorinde said that when the girl’s aunty discovered that she was pregnant, she questioned her.
“The girl, who is five months pregnant, mentioned all the men that have been sleeping with her since her aunty brought her to Lagos in 2016 to be helping her take care of her children.
“Her Aunty’s husband, Henry Edmond, was the first to start having sex with her and he always threatened to kill her if she tells the aunty.
“The other accused sleep with her in their houses and shops in the process of hawking `puff puff’ for her aunty.
“The case was reported and the accused were arrested,” the prosecutor said.
The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
Section prescribes life imprisonment for defilement.
The case was adjourned until July 23 for mention.

Britain’s Engineering Company, Rolls-Royce, has decided to cut 4,600 jobs over two years in the latest attempt to cut costs and make more profit.
The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Warren East, said on Thursday in London that the aim was also to create a much more streamlined organization.
“Rolls-Royce is at a pivotal moment in its history,” East said.
“We are poised to become the world leader in large aircraft engines. But we want to make the business as world class as our engineering and technology is.
“We are proposing the creation of a much more streamlined organization. We have to significantly reduce the size of our corporate centre, removing complexity and duplication that makes us too slow, uncompetitive and too expensive.”
Rolls-Royce has 55,000 employees worldwide of which 26,000 are in Britain. The latest cuts follow previous job cuts and the creation of other roles following a series of profit warnings in 2014.
The company had said that two thirds of the job cuts would fall in Britain, where it employs 15,700 at its headquarters in Derby, central England.
It said the cuts would not affect its engineers.
“These changes will help us deliver over the mid and longer-term a level of free cash flow well beyond our near-term ambition,” East said.
“The people that will be leaving the business have nothing whatsoever to do with solving the issues our customers are having with our engines today.
“I know it sounds incongruous at face value, the loss of the workforce while we’re dealing with these issues but they’re really two separate issues altogether.”
East, a softly-spoken former tech boss, has overhauled the 134-year-old Rolls since he took charge in 2015 but the new cuts come as the group grapples with an aero-engine problem that has grounded planes and angered clients.
The announcement, which is not linked to the Trent 1000 engine issue, marks the biggest round of job cuts since the company was forced to retrench during the aviation crisis that followed the 9/11 attacks in the United States in 2001.
The plan will remove just over 10 per cent of the workforce, targeting duplication in corporate and management roles to try to save 400 million pounds ($536 million) a year by 2020.
East, who built the chip designer ARM Holdings from a start-up into Britain’s biggest tech company, has vowed to simplify Rolls and drive greater efficiencies to enable it to generate 1 billion pounds of free cash flow by 2020.
In January he divided the company into three business units and said he was now ready to remove management duplication between those layers and the corporate centre.
Rolls shares traded 2.7 per cent higher by at 851 pence early on Thursday after it published details of the plan. Reuters/LR News

The Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Rep. Anayo Nnebe, says Super Eagles team at the World Cup in Russia is technically strong and will surprise the world.
In an interview with Latest Reality Metro in Abuja, Nnebe rated the Eagles’ preparation for the competition “very high’’ and expressed confidence in the team’s handlers.
“We look forward to the team coming back with good news; even if they do not come back with the trophy, they will come back with good and cheering news.
“I am optimistic; the team is capable of representing the country effectively and bringing glory to the country.
“I encourage them to dedicate themselves to the progress of the country through superlative performance.
“I am confident because the level of preparedness is high; we have the technical team, we have the coach and I am optimistic that the end will justify the means,” he said.
On legislative support for the team, the lawmaker said that the committee ensured that enough budgetary allocation was made for the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development.
He disclosed that the committee met with the Accountant-General of Federation and relevant stakeholders to address issues of non-release of funds for the ministry and the team.
Nnebe said that the intervention facilitated the release of funds and enabled the team’s early preparation for the tournament.
He called on critics of the team’s list to be patriotic and support them to succeed at the event.
“The problem in the country is that in football everybody is a professional. We have a competent management team handling team selection and player assessment.
“Let us not stay outside as laymen and be challenging decisions made by competent professionals,” he said.
Nigeria will play in group D with two-time World champions, Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in the opening round of the competition.
Nnebe commended ongoing negotiations to handover the National Stadium in Lagos to the Lagos State Government.
He explained that the idea behind the proposed handover was to ensure regular maintenance and to bring the stadium to international standards.
The legislator blamed the poor state of the stadium on limited funds and poor releases of budgetary allocation for its maintenance.
“If you go round this country, you will see that most of Federal Government-owned facilities are out of use.
“The then Presidential Hotel in Enugu and Ikenga Hotel in Awka and so on are some of them; so, if taking over the stadium by the Lagos Government would revitalise and resurrect it, so be it.
“The Lagos State Government is a part of Nigeria, let them take over instead of leaving it abandoned and dilapidated.
“The state government has shown performance and credibility, so let them take it over and bring it to a level of excellence,” he said. LR News

A HIV-positive man who might have consciously passed on the deadly virus to more than 200 sexual partners has been arrested in Italy.
A spokesman for police in Ancona, a city on Italy’s eastern Adriatic coast, told dpa on Thursday that 35-year-old Claudio Pinti had been arrested two days earlier.
Despite having been diagnosed “for at least 11 years,’’ he did not take precautions nor warn his partners about his condition, Ancona police said in a written statement.
When officers apprehended him, Pinti declared himself a “negationist’’ on the existence of HIV, police said.
The virus is known to cause AIDS.
In a press conference on Wednesday, police said Pinti was a regular user of dating websites and might have infected more than 200 people.
He was caught after one of his most recent partners checked herself into hospital after feeling ill and discovered she had contracted the virus.
Authorities urged potential victims to contact police, and in a breach of usual practice, released a picture of the suspect so people who could recognise him.
The police spokesman said several calls have come in and are being verified.
“People are very reluctant to come forward because of the shame,’’ he said.
Thanks to medical advances, life expectancy for HIV and AIDS patients has greatly increased in recent years, but the disease still killed one million people in 2016, according to the World Health Organisation.
In a similar case in 2017, a Rome court sentenced a man to 24 years’ imprisonment for infecting more than 30 people with HIV, including a pregnant woman who passed on the disease to her son. dpa/LR News

Kaduna Governor, Nasir El-Rufai

Fifty gangsters, known variously as Yan Sarasuka or Yan Shara in Kaduna state, have been arrested.
Mr. Samuel Aruwan, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, said the suspects would be arraigned before magistrates’ court after investigations.
The suspects were arrested in different locations in Kaduna town as security agencies investigate last weekend’s outrage by hoodlums in parts of the city.
Governor El-rufai also directed security agencies to deal decisively with the menace of urban hoodlums.
“The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has received briefings from security agencies on the outrage perpetrated by urban gangsters, notoriously known as Yan Shara or Sarasuka.
“The Governor has also visited Abakpa community where he interacted with some members of the community and condemned the criminal actions of the gangsters.
“Security agencies have informed the Governor of the arrest updates on the arrest of over 50 suspects. The governor requested that the police and the Ministry of Justice to ensure prompt investigations and diligent prosecution of whoever is indicted.
“He urged the police to ensure that fleeing suspects do not escape justice, declaring that all government agencies must work to collectively end the menace.”
Similarly, Aruwan also clarified the position of the Kaduna State Government on the proliferation of vigilante groups in the state.
“The Kaduna State Government has made it clear that only the Kaduna State Vigilance Service is empowered by the law to regulate vigilante activity in the state.
“Any community that wishes to make a contribution to security and intelligence gathering in their area should forward the persons they are presenting to the Kaduna State Vigilance Service and the security agencies for thorough screening.
“This is to ensure that such persons have no criminal records or tendencies that could compromise the security and well-being of the citizenry.
“By this clarification, communities should liaise with the Kaduna State Vigilance Service to make arrangements for their communities.”
