As Nigeria tries to work out a way to solve the herdsmen-farmers conflict, Tanzania faces a different dimension of the problem:herdsmen versus the wildlife in the parks.
Tanzania during the week found six lions and 74 vultures dead near a national park, south of the country, after they were poisoned to death.
Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Tourism Gaudence Milanzi said the way the animals were killed suggested they had been poisoned by local herdsmen amid an escalating human-wildlife conflict in the country.
“I can confirm that six lions were poisoned in the wildlife management area just outside of the Ruaha National Park. We are investigating this incident,” Milanzi said, according to China’s news agency, Xinhua.
“An investigation launched by the government has been able to arrest one suspect, with samples of the poisoned lions and vultures taken to the Chief Government Chemist Laboratory to identify the type of poison used,” he said.
Tanzania’s $2billion tourism sector, which depends heavily on wildlife safari, is the biggest foreign exchange earner, but there are growing clashes between wildlife populations, farmers and livestock keepers.
Conservationists described the latest mass poisoning of lions and endangered vultures near the Ruaha National Park as a “devastating scene,” with the scavengers killed after eating a poisoned cattle carcass.
“Six lions… had been killed, apparently from poison, as they were all found close to a scavenged cattle carcass,” the Ruaha Carnivore Project (RCP), part of Oxford University’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU), said in a statement.
“This event had additional tragic consequences, with dozens of critically endangered vultures found dead or badly affected,” the statement said. “They eventually found 74 dead vultures as well as the six lions.”
Four other sick vultures were taken to the Ruaha National Park for treatment. One died shortly after arrival, but the others are doing well, it said.
“It appears as if someone poisoned a carcass after lions attacked cattle.
Alarmingly, poisoning is a common response to conflict,” said the Ruaha Carnivore Project, which is monitoring lion populations in Tanzania.
In 2014, a herdsman near the Ikona Wildlife Management Area in Serengeti district in Mara region poisoned to death seven lions after they attacked his cows.

Residents of Ilobu town in Osun State were shocked as men from the Osun State Police Command stormed the town and uncovered a ritualist den with some shallow graves.

The ritualist den which is located inside a big house at Molete area of the town was on Friday discovered by a team of policemen led by the Commissioner in the state, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye.

The commissioner of police told our correspondent that the police acted on a tip off and they swooped on the den where two persons believed to be siblings were arrested.

He said that the leader of the syndicate was at large but said the police were on his trail and would not give up until he was arrested and everybody, who had connection with the den.

He said, “We acted on a a reliable tip off which led to the arrest of two brothers of same parents while their kingpin and leader is still at large.

“Of particular interest was the discovery of a dungeon with path which connects one of the shrines to another. Several statues and hundreds of bottles of alcoholic drink were scattered around the shrine.

“Some shallow graves were also seen scattered around the building but we still investigating to be sure if they are graves of some of  the victims of the fraudsters.”

The CP appealed to the people of the state to always assist the police by giving them useful information which could help them to perform their duties better.

He said security of any state or nation could not be left in the hands of a few security men but added that everybody should be involved. He stated that policemen could not be everywhere at the same time to know everything going on.

He said that this was the reason the police needed the cooperation and the support of the people of the state while assuring them that any information given would be treated with utmost confidentiality.

Some residents of the town lauded the police for coming to their rescue by arresting some of the operators of the shrine, saying they knew that the suspected criminals carried out nefarious activities in the building but they were too afraid to confront them.

It will be recalled that a team of policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had in January 12 uncovered a den around Ilesa and arrested three men at the place.

Kwara CP., Mr. Lawan Ado

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawan Ado, said the command has arrested members of a robbery and kidnapping gang who allegedly killed an operative of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Corporal Machi Yusuf, who was a corporal.

The suspects are Abubakar Mohammed, SanniAbubakar, Sani Isa, AbubakarTuku, LawalAhmadu and Mohammed Jantu.

He said on Friday that the suspects were involved in rustling 233 cows while one AK47 rifle with six live ammunitions were recovered from the suspects.

While parading the suspects and others accused of other crimes, Ado said the command got information on the movement of some cattle rustlers and kidnappers through intelligence sharing with the Mokwa Police Station in Niger State.

According to him, the suspects had allegedly escaped from Kwara State. He stated that on December 12, 2017, SARS operatives arrested the suspects and transferred them to Kwara for discreet investigation.

The CP said many of the rustled cows had been handed over to their owners, adding that the few remaining cows whose owners had not shown up for collection would be auctioned according to due process.

Ado said, “Regrettably, Corporal Machi Yusuf, (Force No. 274148), lost his life during an exchange of gunfire with the kingpin of the gang, Adamu Abacha, who opened fire on the SARS operatives when they were trying to arrest him.

“He escaped into the bush. But while policemen were combing the bush, his dead body was found beside a shallow grave where he buried his AK 47 rifle.”

Meanwhile, the CP said a report at the Yashkira Police Station showed that unknown gunmen kidnapped one Alhaji Hassan Taiye at his mosque.

According to him, two of the culprits wore Army uniforms and were armed with AK 47 rifles. He added that the victim was taken away in a Toyota Corolla after the victim’s guard was shot in the process.

Ado told journalists that the victim’s vehicle was later abandoned along the Yashkira/Kosubosu Road, adding that after an investigation, two suspects – Mohammed Yar(aka. RuaChumo) and Tambaya Abubakar– were arrested while three unregistered motorcycles were also recovered.

The CP said the command also arrested three suspects – Ibrahim Alhaji, Mohammed Audu and Mutari Abdulkareem- for armed robbery.

Ado said, “On January 13, at about 7.30am, Abdulkadri Ibrahim of Baburu compound, in Lafiagi reported at the Lafiagi Police Station that on the same date at about 1.25am, while at home with his family, five armed men invaded his house and robbed them of N65,000 and inflicted injuries on him.

“Investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department led to the arrest of the suspects, who have confessed to the robbery and other crimes in the area. Exhibits recovered from the suspects are; one Dell laptop and mobile phones stolen from some of their earlier victims.”

The CP said all the suspects would soon be arraigned.

Abubakar Malami

Seven months after a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos ordered the Federal Government to release to Nigerians the list of public officials from whom public funds had been recovered, the list has yet to be released by the authorities.

Justice Hadiza Shagari had on July 6, 2017, in her judgment in a suit filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, directed the Federal Government to “immediately” release the names of the officials, the circumstances under which the funds were recovered and the exact amount recovered from each public official.

While responding to the judgment, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had said the government would publish the names of the looters, in compliance with the court order, noting that the Federal Government totally agreed with the ruling.

The Federal Government had on June 4, 2016, through the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed that it had recovered cash sums of N78,325,354,631.82,  $185,119,584.61,  £3,508,355.46 and €11,250 between May 29, 2015, and May 25, 2016. He added that the assets and cash seized under interim forfeiture totalled $9bn, N126bn, £2.4m and €303,399.

And on October 12, 2017, the acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, said at a forum that the cash recovered through the whistleblower policy had risen to over N30bn, in different foreign currencies.

Meanwhile, the refusal to release the list or obey the court judgment was preceded by the promise voluntarily made in December 2015 by the President when he said he would unveil the names of the looters. He had said the only thing stopping the Central Bank of Nigeria from releasing the list at that time was to avoid jeopardising investigations and further recoveries.

He also reiterated the promise in May 2016 at an anti-corruption summit in London that he would give a comprehensive report on the loot recovered on May 29, 2016 – Democracy Day, which he failed to do.

And till date, the names of the looters have yet to be released.

Speaking on the protracted delay, the Executive Director, SERAP, Adetokunbo Mumuni, said the refusal of the Buhari-led administration to make the list public, as directed by the court, had called into the question the much-touted integrity of the administration.

He said, “Once you make a promise, you should fulfil it. They said they would fight corruption, judgement was obtained to help you to fight corruption, yet you are not obeying the court order, it questions your integrity and sincerity as a government. This government is not doing what it promised.”

Also, the President of Campaign for Democracy, Mr. Bako Abdul Usman, described as unfortunate the way the present administration had been flouting court orders, saying even though the African Union made the President the model of anti-corruption fight in Africa, that “does not really hold water back home when looking at the nitty-gritty.”

He added, “If that list is released today, people within the circle of the President would be part and parcel of it. That is why there is a constraint in releasing the list. Impunity, high-handedness and corrupt practices are easy to come by in this administration.”

A legal practitioner and public affairs analyst, Liborous Oshoma, said a government that won an election on account of its promise to be transparent didn’t have to be compelled by the court to name and shame looters, stressing that the excuses it gave had already made it another round of propaganda.

He noted that the reluctance to release the list could be because the government bloated the amount it recovered, making it difficult to put names to the figures. He explained that it would be an investment in uncertainty to expect the government to release the names before the next general elections because it might need the influence and monetary contribution of some of the looters.

He added, “Do they (government) also need a legal paperwork to release the names of those that owned up voluntarily, not due to their conscience but because it was either obvious or government was closing in on them? To serve as deterrence to others, shouldn’t a transparent government release those names.

“Now that elections are here, these (looters) are the same people they would go back to source money from. So, if anybody believes that the government would name and shame those looters before the election, the person must be joking, because some alleged criminals would even be embraced because of their money and influence, especially when you have desperation for a second term.”

But when asked when the names would be released as he promised in July 2017, the AGF said a committee set up by the President was still auditing the list of the looters.

In a text message he sent as a response to Saturday PUNCH’s inquiry, he said, “Audit work is in progress by a committee put in place by the President.”

Ayo Ajewole & his wife

At what age did you plan getting married initially?

While growing up, I had always believed that I would get married at the age of 30 at most but I ended up getting married later than that age.

What delayed the plan?

Money basically because you have to be sure of your income before venturing into marriage but in all, I give thanks to God because everything worked out fine. We may make plans but God has the final say.

When did you eventually tie the knot?

I got married in April 2017.

How did you meet your wife?

I met her at a programme I was invited to in Kogi State. While the crowd was trying to take pictures with me, I just sighted this beautiful lady standing at a corner looking at me. I walked up to her and immediately told her that she was my wife but she began to laugh. I told her I was serious and that I was speaking as a prophet but she kept on laughing and told me that I was just too funny and playful. While I was saying that, my mind kept telling me that she probably was in a relationship with someone else but I did not care. I got her number and here we are today.

At what point did she begin to take you seriously?

Thank God for the midnight call promotion during that time. I called her during one midnight and she said, ‘Woli, so you also do extra-cool.’ But I told her that it was love that caused it; when it comes to love, you can do anything. After I said this, she was ready to listen to me. Then she asked if I was serious about my statement and I told her yes. She asked what made me so sure and I told her that as I knew a man of God, I was talking with authority. Besides, the Bible tells me that immediately Adam saw Eve, he recognised Eve and named her woman which means a man taken out of me and has a womb. I said that it was the same process. In fact, before I got to the venue of the event, something told me that I would meet somebody that would never leave my life.

How long did the courtship last?

It lasted for about four years.

How did you propose to your wife?

For me, I was always doing something for her every month just to let her know that I was serious because it took her time to be sure that I really wanted her. Sometimes I had to ask my celebrity friends to call her and let her know that I loved her. After about a year of our relationship, I packaged something and proposed to her properly. But I would say that it was from the first month we got together that I started proposing to her. My wife is so beautiful and I did not want to lose her, so I did not wait till I was ready to marry before proposing to her. After a month, I started the proposal process.

Did you face any challenge during your courtship?

We did not really face any challenge especially because I have a very positive outlook at any situation that confronts me. What I thought could have been a challenge was her father’s disposition to our union. She is the only daughter of her father and he loves her alot, so I thought that would have been a hurdle to cross but God went before me and prepared the way. I had even seen her father in my dream before I met with him in real life. In fact, it was her father that instructed her to bring the man in her life home and that was how I met my father-in-law.

When you were at the altar during the wedding, what went through your mind?

There were a lot of things that went through my mind. On that day, I shed tears of joy. Looking at the crowd that came for my wedding alone was quite overwhelming. I felt that I had been anchoring weddings for a long while and finally it was my turn for someone to anchor mine. I looked into my wife’s eyes and I said to myself this is the beautiful woman that I would spend the rest of my life with. I knew that I meant it when I said she was my wife the first day I met her but the mere fact that it was becoming a reality made me very joyous. Another thing that went through my mind was how I would settle in my home. I was very happy on that day.
