The Imo State House of Assembly has started proceedings to impeach the Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere.

The lawmakers are accusing the deputy governor of gross misconduct.

In a petition submitted by the Deputy Speaker, Nnanna Ozuruigbo, and signed by 13 out of the 27 members of the House, the Deputy Governor was accused of absconding from his office for more than three months without permission and therefore should be impeached.

Other allegations leveled against him are the failure to carry out official duties assigned him by the governor, refusal to attend State Executive Council Meetings, and refusal to hold meetings with the governor and commissioners in the state.

To this effect, a 6-man panel probe committee has been set up to investigate the allegations and report back to the House within seven days.

Meanwhile, the Special Assistant on Media to the Deputy Governor, Uche Onwuchekwa, said the office of the Deputy Governor has not been served any notice of impeachment and other allegations leveled against his principal are malicious, concocted and false.

President Buhari & President Cyril

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, will be visiting Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, to discuss bilateral and global issues among the two countries.

President Ramaphosa who has been invited by President Buhari is expected in the country from July 10-11, 2018.

During his visit, he will be participating in the 2018 Annual Meeting and 25th Anniversary Celebrations of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).

As the continent’s two largest economies, South Africa and Nigeria enjoy good political, economic and social relations formally established in 1994, immediately after South Africa’s first democratic elections.

While in Nigeria, it is expected that the two Presidents will discuss a wide range of bilateral, continental and global issues of common concern. Peace, stability and continental integration will feature prominently in their discussions.

Formal relations between South Africa and Nigeria have been conducted through the Bi-National Commission (BNC), established in 1999 as a structured bilateral mechanism to promote political, economic, social, cultural, scientific and technical cooperation between the two countries.

The BNC has over the years deepened and solidified the relations between the two countries, and laid the foundation for increased bilateral political and economic cooperation.

Bilateral cooperation has been enhanced over the years to the extent that there are thirty-four (34) signed bilateral agreements between the two countries which cover various areas such as arts and culture, education, agriculture, trade and investment, mining, defence, policing, immigration, taxation, science and technology, health, tourism, environment and energy amongst others.

South Africa and Nigeria also enjoy strong economic cooperation demonstrated by the increasing trade and investment flows between the two sister Republics.

For example, South Africa exported goods valued at R6, 4 billion in 2016 while Nigerian exports to South Africa totalled R30, 4 billion. In 2017, South African exports were valued at R5, 7 billion against R22, 8 billion imports from Nigeria. Nigeria enjoys a huge trade deficit due to the increasing South African importation of petroleum products.

There are over 120 South African companies currently doing business in Nigeria in various sectors, mainly in telecommunications, banking, retail, hospitality, mining, tourism, agriculture and construction and tourism. Some of the South African companies that have invested in Nigeria include MTN, Multichoice, Stanbic Bank, Shoprite Checkers, South African Airways, Sasol and Bon Hotels, to mention a few.

President Ramaphosa will be accompanied by the Ministers of Defence & Military Veterans; Energy, Police and Deputy Minister of Trade & Industry.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Oyo State chapter has sealed off offices belonging to telecommunications company, MTN across Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Led by the NLC chairman in the state, Mr Waheed Olojede, executives and some members of the union marched to seal the offices for their alleged refusal to allow employees join labour unions.

Meanwhile, the organisation in a statement signed on Monday by its Corporate Relations Executive, Tobechukwu Okigbo explained that the protest by NLC where officials picketed their offices across the country was needless.

They also alleged that some of their workers were injured during the protest.

Olojede, however, told journalists that the 3-day closure is a warning to the conglomerate to allow the commencement of dialogue to fashion out modalities and rules of engagement.

He added that until the company decides to tow the path of decency and allow better labour relations among employees, the offices will remain closed even across the country.

The labour leader also noted that other telecom companies will be treated the same way but that the NLC decided to start with MTN because it is the largest in the country.

Multiple media reports, citing rescue officials, have indicated that a tenth boy has been removed from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave.
A team of 19 divers had earlier entered the flooded Thai cave to attempt to retrieve the final four members of the soccer team and their coach who have been trapped underground for more than two weeks.
Sunday’s mission, the second rescue, was completed in less than 10 hours and resulted in four boys being removed from the complex cave network.
The mission mirrored Saturday’s successful attempt to rescue the first group of four but reduced the task by some two hours.
“The first day we spent 11 hours, yesterday we spent nine hours, [today] we hope we can do it faster or the same as yesterday.
” If everything goes right, we will see four kids and a doctor and Seals that have stayed with the kids will all come out,” head of the joint command center, Narongsak Osatanakorn, said.
“Four plus one coach, so it’s five.”
The rescue parties hope to also extract a doctor as well as multiple SEALs who had been monitoring the members of the soccer team.

Desperate to recover stolen wealth, President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya has taken after President Muhammadu Buhari, clamouring for repatriation of loots stashed overseas.
Buhari, African Union (AU) anti-corruption czar, has led the way for other African countries to fight corruption in its facets.
Kenyatta and his visiting Swiss counterpart, Mr. Alain Berset on Monday in Nairobi oversaw the signing of an agreement that clears the way for the recovery of assets.
These assets were acquired through corruption and crime in Kenya, and stashed in foreign countries.
The agreement, called a “Framework for the Return of Assets from Corruption and Crime in Kenya (FRACCK)”, is also supported by the United Kingdom and the Jersey Island.
It would create a mechanism for Kenya to recover money stolen by corrupt individuals and hidden in the three countries – Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Jersey Island.
Kenyatta said the signing of the agreement at State House in Nairobi was part of his resolve to eliminate corruption in the country.
The framework, which is in line with the United Nations Convention against Corruption, provides the principles to guide the recovery of stolen assets.
“In the spirit of the Global Forum on Asset Recovery’s Principles for Disposition and Transfer of Confiscated Stolen Assets in Corruption Cases, returns should proceed in a transparent and accountable manner with the mutual consent of both Kenya and the partner offering the return,” said the new agreement .
To avoid complications of asset recovery, the framework says that recovery should follow executable judgments.
A steering committee comprising the Executive Office of the President, the Attorney General, the National Treasury, the Assets Recovery Agency, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Agency and envoys or representatives representing the partner countries will be established to implement the deal.
The agreement also has a provision to allow other nations willing to cooperate with Kenya in the recovery of stolen assets to join.

In a dramatic manner, a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, stormed the rally of one of the governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu.

Adebutu, who is currently representing Remo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and his supporters were at the rally held within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library when the former President arrived in his Toyota jeep  in a convoy of other cars.

This threw the supporters into a wild jubilation, as Obasanjo alighted from the vehicle.

The former President, who is also an in-law to the aspirant, said, “I am just passing by and decided to say hello and wish you well.”

Immediately he extended his pleasantries, he jumped into the jeep and he left with the convoy of cars in his trail to his residence situated within the premises.

Obasanjo had reiterated that he had quit partisan politics when he established his Coalition for Nigeria Movement, which later fused into the African Democratic Congress.

He, however, said his doors remained open for consultations by all Nigerians who shared his views of a united country.

Before the rally, Adebutu had earlier visited the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, in his palace to seek the monarch’s support and blessing.

He was accompanied on the visit by some PDP chieftains in the state and he had earlier donated electricity transformers to four communities in the Abeokuta metropolis.
