The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has described the sack of the Director General of Department for State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura as a step in the right direction.

According to him, the sack was long overdue following the manner in which Mr Daura ran the service.

He said this in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, on Tuesday.

Ortom, therefore, urged the Presidency to also investigate operations of other security agencies to save the country from what he described as the current wave of impunity.

Earlier, he condemned the blockage of the National Assembly by men of the Nigerian Police Force and DSS.

The security officials had stormed the Assembly complex in the early hours of Tuesday, barricading the entrance and preventing lawmakers from getting in.

Journalists were also barred from entering the complex with the DSS officials claiming that the blockage was an order “from above.”

Shortly after the incident, the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, ordered the immediate sack of Mr Daura.

He was thereafter replaced by Matthew Seiyefa.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has exonerated the Nigeria Police Force from the Tuesday’s blockage of the National Assembly (NASS) by security operatives.
Idris stated this after a closed door meeting with the acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.
He said the blockage of the NASS complex was a surprise to him, adding that the police would soon issue a statement on the incident.
“Obviously, like I said, I have not got a detailed brief on that. So, when I get the brief, in fact we are going to issue a (press) release,’’ he said.
Osinbajo had on Tuesday sacked the Director General, Department of State Service, Lawal Daura with immediate effect, over the invasion of the premises of the National Assembly.
Osinbajo condemned the unauthorized takeover of the National Assembly complex, describing it as “a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.’’
He maintained that the “unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.’’
The acting President assured Nigerians that all persons within the law enforcement apparatus who participated in this travesty would be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary action.
The sacked DSS boss had earlier met behind closed door with the acting president with the IGP Idris and the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, in attendance.

The Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura has been sacked by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
According to a tweets by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President,
Osinbajo has ” directed the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Musa Daura”.
“Mr. Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice”, Akande said.
Operatives of the DSS, wearing masks blocked the gates of the National Assembly this morning, preventing senators and workers from gaining entrance.
Some PDP senators, who were caught in the blockade interpreted it as a move to impeach Senate President Bukola Saraki. But it turned out there was nothing like that in the offing as no APC senator was in the National Assembly when they were creating the row outside the gate.
The blockade has been roundly condemned as anti-democratic and has made the leadership of the National Assembly to call off a scheduled meeting this afternoon, that would probably have paved way for the reconvening of the Assembly.
Members of the two-chamber legislature went on break on 24 July. They were scheduled to resume on 25 September. The executive arm of government has issued a red alert that the recess may lead to a government shutdown.

It was a day to remember for the over 3,000 bikers and enthusiasts from across Nigeria who converged on Lagos to celebrate the annual biking festival.
NAN-TV reports that the festival’s second edition, dubbed, “Jellof & Palmwine 2.0”, was organised by a group of bike riders, ‘Bikers with Attitude and Determination’, also known as ‘B.A.D Gang’.
The event which held at the Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos was also attended by professional car racers, cyclists and celebrities, including Big Brother’s finalist, Tobi Bakare, among others.
According to Mr Segun Solanke, the President, B.A.D Gang, the festival offers members and lovers of fast rides an opportunity to network, relax, give back to the society, as well as pay tribute to fallen bikers.
“As the largest group of riders in Africa we believe in charity, giving back to the society and making people smile.
“So, we decided to bring everybody – bikers and non-bikers – together to have fun since having done different activities over the years,’’ he said.
Solanke, who’s been biking for 22 years and aware of the public perception that biking is dangerous, described biking as fun, saying “you also arrive at your destination faster than most people.
“But we also preach the gospel of don’t speed, don’t drive against traffic and also observe the traffic light.’’
The certified biker added that the group had a mutually beneficial relationship with the Lagos State Government, especially in areas of charity donations and traffic regulation.
The event which featured bike stunts, slow bike race competition, raffle draw and kit-up challenge, was further spiced up with dance competition, games and demonstration of how to properly wear a biker’s safety gear.
Some enthusiasts and vendors who took advantage of the festival to promote their products told NAN commended the organisers.
“It’s my first time at such an event. But I decided to feature my products at this event because the bikers fit into my target audience.
“They are the cool, hip, middle class and not too young audience,” Nneka Ukay, founder, Chip Plantain Chips, said.
Kehinde Louis, a sales representative for Sapphire Scents, said “For us as a brand, this event has impacted positively on the sales of our products.
“For instance, some people who used our products during the first edition are now willing to buy more this year; so, this is a plus for us.’’
“I love the organiser’s sense of togetherness and team spirit because they created a platform for people to have fun irrespective of religion, tribe or tradition.
“I like speed and street life, so I try to inculcate these in my clothing designs. “So I don’t regret being a part of this year’s edition”, a bike enthusiast, Philip David, said.
NAN reports that the event also featured free breast and cervical screening by Optimal Cancer Care Foundation. LR News

Boko Haram jihadists have killed seven villagers in a dawn raid in Nigeria’s restive northeast, local militia and a resident said Tuesday.

Gunmen in trucks and on motorcycles late Monday attacked Munduri, a village 13 kilometres (eight miles) north of Borno state capital Maiduguri, firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades, according to resident Abdullahi Bunu.

“The attackers seized seven people and beheaded them before setting fire to the entire village,” militia leader Umar Ari told AFP by telephone from Maiduguri.

Those who were decapitated were the village chief and his wife, Bunu said.

“We returned this morning and found the entire village burnt along with all our food supplies and livestock”.

Boko Haram has intensified its armed campaign in recent weeks, including against military targets in which dozens of troops are believed to have been either killed or missing.

The rebels have split into two groups, and it was not immediately clear which was behind the latest attack.

A faction loyal to Abubakar Shekau is notorious for indiscriminate killings of civilians while the Abu Mus’ab Al-Barnawi faction — which is affiliated to the so-called Islamic State — largely focuses on attacking the military.

Five people were killed in a similar raid last week in Gasarwa village, near the garrison town of Monguno.

The attacks contrast with repeated claims by the military and the government that Boko Haram has been defeated and that it is safe for people displaced by Islamist violence to return home.

The jihadists’ nine-year campaign to establish a hardline Islamic state has killed an estimate 20,000 people and displaced over 2.6 million from their homes.
