The Federal Government has approved a rehabilitation fund of N10bn for victims of killer herdsmen attacks in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba states, as part of efforts to resettle thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo made this known on Tuesday during a visit to IDP camps in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

He told over 34,000 IDPs who are taking refuge at the Abagana camp that the government is doing everything possible to ensure they are immediately resettled in their ancestral homes.

Professor Osinbajo who also promised to supervise the rehabilitation process, announced a three-point solution of providing adequate security for the communities, rebuilding destroyed homes and restoring farmlands currently being occupied by invading herdsmen to enable food production.

Several states have witnessed various attacks by the killer herdsmen since the beginning of the year with Benue state being one of the worst hit.

In April, the state government declared that the state was under a siege, following another attack on a church in which several persons were killed.

Subsequently, the governor, Samuel Ortom, dragged the leadership of the Miyetti Allah group before the State High Court, Markurdi, on the allegations of murder and widespread violence across 14 out of the 23 local councils of the state.

But the group has maintained that it has no involvement in the killings.

Several groups have, however, attributed the killings to the implementation of the anti-grazing law which bans open-grazing of cattle in the state.

But some others believe the anti-grazing law must not be compromised as it has nothing to do with the killings.

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose had said that contrary to the belief in some quarters that Law was responsible for the killings, the Federal Government’s handling of security matters was to blame. LR News

Facebook said Monday it has suspended “around 200” apps on its platform as part of an investigation into misuse of private user data.

The investigation was launched after revelations that political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica hijacked data on some 87 million Facebook users as it worked on Donald Trump‘s 2016 campaign.

“The investigation process is in full swing,” said an online statement from Facebook product partnerships vice president Ime Archibong.

“We have large teams of internal and external experts working hard to investigate these apps as quickly as possible. To date thousands of apps have been investigated and around 200 have been suspended — pending a thorough investigation into whether they did in fact misuse any data.”

Archibong added that “where we find evidence that these or other apps did misuse data, we will ban them and notify people via this website.”

The revelations over Cambridge Analytica have prompted investigations on both sides of the Atlantic and led Facebook to tighten its policies on how personal data is shared and accessed.

Facebook made a policy change in 2014 limiting access to user data but noted that some applications still had data obtained prior to the revision.

“There is a lot more work to be done to find all the apps that may have misused people’s Facebook data — and it will take time,” Archibong said.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg spent most of the past month on the fallout from revelations about Cambridge Analytica’s data hijacking, seeking to assuage fears that the California-based internet colossus can safeguard privacy while making money by targeting ads based on what people share about themselves.

Efforts to rebuild trust in Facebook include a review of all applications that had access to large amounts of user data.

The 200 applications Facebook said it suspended included one called myPersonality that collected psychological information shared by millions of members of the social network who voluntarily took “psychometric” tests.

“We suspended the myPersonality app almost a month ago because we believe that it may have violated Facebook’s policies,” Archibong said Monday in response to an AFP inquiry.

“We are currently investigating the app, and if myPersonality refuses to cooperate or fails our audit, we will ban it.”

About 40 percent of the people who took the tests also opted to share Facebook profile data, resulting in a large science research database, the University of Cambridge psychometrics center said of the project on its website.

Security and encryption at the website used to share data with registered academic collaborators was meager and easily bypassed, according to a report Monday in British magazine New Scientist.

Police arrest Muslim Shiites in Abuja

The FCT Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 60 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) in the territory during a violent protest on Monday in Abuja.
Latest Reality Metro reports that the group defied warning from the police and staged the violent protest to demand for the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who had been detention since 2016.
The spokesman of the police in the FCT, DSP Anjuguri Manzah confirmed the arrest to newsmen in an interview on Tuesday at the Garki Hospital.
Manzah was in the hospital to see how the two personnel of the command, who sustained varied degree of injuries while dispersing the protesters, were recuperating.
They are SP Linus Ogah, who had bruises on his face and could hardly speak or open his eyes, and Insp. Mary Ameh, who sustained injury in one of her hands.
The spokesman said that bullet had been removed from Ameh’s hand, adding that the protesters also destroyed some police operational vehicles.
“During the Monday protest, members of IMN or otherwise known as Shiites engaged police and haul stones at police personnel deployed to disperse them.
“They also smashed some vehicle glasses parked around the Federal Secretariat,” he said.
On April 16, the police had arrested 115 members of the sect when they embarked on a similar violent protest to demand that their leader be freed.
Manzah, who said that though citizens had right to protest, advised that they should do that in a “civil manner’’ and not disturb public peace.
He said that the command had taken proactive measures to check violent protest in the territory.

Two wealthy Nigerians who battered a fellow student with a shisha pipe in an argument over who had the richest father have been spared jail.

Mailonline reports that Elvis Ilonze, 20, who has had his Mercedes car covered in fur, attacked his childhood friend, Prince Nnaji, in the flat they shared in Brighton, East Sussex.

Nnaji tried to escape from the flat but Ilonze, along with his friend, Daniel Oluyemi, 24, chased him and beat him up with a wine bottle on April 7 last year about 10pm.

Nnaji’s girlfriend, Louanna Rayawa, tried to stop the attack, but was pushed to the ground by Ilonze.

The pair also assaulted a law student, Chiedozie Dibiagwu, 23, who was sitting on a chair nearby and witnessed Nnaji being assaulted.

Nnaji and Ilonze had known each other from Nigeria, but when Nnaji dared to suggest that he had the richer father, Ilonze decided to “teach him a lesson.”

Ilonze and Oluyemi both pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and were spared jail at the Old Bailey.

‘Privileged’ Ilonze came to the UK to study a four-year Masters of Engineering degree at the University of Sussex, and is one year away from completing his course.

His lawyer, Tom Hoskins, said Ilonze faced deportation back to Nigeria if he were given a sentence of more than one year in custody.

Oluyemi, who is training to become an accountant at the same university, is expecting a child in September or October.

His lawyer, Johnathan Page, said the right place for him was at home, preparing for the “momentous occasion,” not in prison.

Judge Christine Laing QC spared the ‘cosseted’ pair jail, suspending a one-year custodial sentence for 18 months to give them ‘one last chance.’

The judge said, “Unlike many of the people who pass through the courts, you both come from backgrounds of privilege.

“It couldn’t be more childish, effectively an insult on somebody’s parents – who’s got the richer dad – that started this fight.

“You both appear to be incredibly immature, perhaps as a result of being cosseted in your upbringing.”

The judge added that the pair, though immature, “have much to contribute to society.”

Both Ilonze and Oluyemi thanked the judge for sparing them jail before leaving the Old Bailey dock.

Ilonze of Hendon and Oluyemi of Colindale, North London, admitted to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

They were each given a one-year prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

The Nigerian military said it had rescued an aged man from the captivity of Boko Haram during crossfire.

A statement by the spokesman for the military counter-insurgency in the North-East (Operation Lafiya Dole), Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, read, “Troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole have rescued an aged man who was held hostage by the elements of Boko Haram terrorist group in Gobara, a village in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.”

The statement added, “In a rare display of bravery and humaneness, a Platoon Commander of the 192 Battalion, Lt. Asajwun Ahmadu, rescued and personally carried on his shoulders, the feeble aged man who had been caught up in the exchange of fire between the troops and the insurgents during an offensive to clear insurgents out of their hideouts in Gobara on Friday, May 11, 2018. The rescued man is currently receiving medical attention at the 192 Battalion Medical Reception Centre.

“During the advance to conduct the offensive at Gobara, the counter-insurgency troops uncovered and successfully detonated three Improvised Explosive Devices buried by Boko Haram insurgents around the Damboa Bridge, Fadakwe and Fadakwe Christian areas, respectively.

“In the offensive, the gallant troops killed two insurgents and destroyed their camp, logistics and IED factory during the firefight. Charlyboy (middle) flanked by members of the Ourmumudondo movement on a peaceful protest to the Federal Ministry of Justice on Monday.

Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charlyboy, on Monday led his `Ourmumudondo’ Group on a peaceful protest to the Federal Ministry of Justice, demanding the proscription of ‘’Killer herdsmen” across Nigeria.
Latest Reality Metro reports that the Group is a non-political coalition of Nigerians from all backgrounds who advocate for national reawakening, towards holding leaders responsible and ensuring good governance at all levels.
According to Charlyboy, the protest is to urge the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to declare the group as a common enemy of Nigerians.
“We are extremely concerned that the survival of Nigeria is currently being threatened by these killer herdsmen, as innocent Nigerians are being slaughtered in different parts of the country on daily basis.
“In 2018 alone, hundreds of innocent Nigerians were cut down by this group, and hundreds of communities are affected by the wanton destruction of human lives and properties.
“We, therefore, urge the Ministry of Justice, the nation’s highest custodian of law, to immediately take firm action towards getting Federal Government to proscribe and designate the killer herdsmen a terrorist group in Nigeria.”
Charlyboy noted that since relevant government authorities had acknowledged that the killer herdsmen were foreign elements, who infiltrated the country, the group wants them declared as enemies of the Nigerian state.
He added that such pronouncement would give security agents the tenacity to fight it, and also help the nation to secure regional cooperation and support.
“We are not saying every herder in Nigeria should be prescribed as a terrorist, because the herdsmen everybody knows in this country do not carry arms and sophisticated weapons.
“Our president had publicly declared during his recent visits to the UK and U.S., that Nigeria was under the invasion of killer herdsmen from another country.
“It is, however, instructive to admit for effective action and intervention that there cannot be infiltration into the country by external forces without internal collaborators.
“Proscription of these killer herdsmen and their designation as a terrorist group will give Nigeria greater leverage to seek better regional cooperation and international support to confront this menace concertedly.
“Our security agents will collectively go after them and also investigate their line of funding, to unravel those who are secretly colluding with the group,” he urged.
The group added that as the 2019 general elections was drawing near, there was need for Nigerians to be assured that they were safe to come out to exercise their civic rights.
Charlyboy then handed over a letter containing the group’s grievances and demands, addressed to Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.
Mrs Lola Uket, Acting Director of General Services in the Ministry, who received the letter on behalf of the chairman, commended the group for its genuine concern for peace and security in Nigeria.
She then assured the group that their demands would be presented to the minister.
