Botswana President, Ian Khama

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe should end his attempts to remain in office after the military seized power, as he has no regional diplomatic support to stay in power, Botswana President Ian Khama said on Friday.
The military intervention, which political sources say could pave the way to a national unity government after 37 years of Mugabe rule, also presented “an opportunity to put Zimbabwe on a path to peace and prosperity”, Khama told Reuters.
“I don’t think anyone should be President for that amount of time. We are Presidents, we are not monarchs. It’s just common sense,” Khama said.
Earlier, Mugabe arrived at a university graduation ceremony in the capital on Friday, his first public appearance since a military seizure of power that political sources say is aimed at ending his 37 years in office.
Mugabe, who is 93, opened a graduation ceremony at Zimbabwe Open University in Harare.
He wore blue and yellow academic robes and a mortar board hat and appeared to fall asleep in his chair as his eyes closed and his head lolled.
Mugabe led the country’s liberation struggle and has dominated its politics since independence in 1980.
He said he is still in charge but a senior member of the ZANU-PF ruling party said it wanted him gone.
“If he becomes stubborn, we will arrange for him to be fired on Sunday,” the source said. “When that is done, it’s impeachment on Tuesday.”
In contrast, the military said in a statement on national television it was “engaging” with Mugabe. It referred to him as Commander in Chief and said it would announce an outcome as soon as possible.
Mugabe is revered as an elder statesman and member of the generation of Africa’s independence leaders but he is also viewed by many in Africa as a president who held his country back by remaining in power too long.
He calls himself the grand old man of African politics.
Zimbabwe’s official newspaper, the Herald, ran photographs late on Thursday showing him grinning and shaking hands with military chief Gen. Constantino Chiwenga, who seized power this week.
The images stunned Zimbabweans who thought it meant Mugabe was managing to hold out against Chiwenga’s coup, with some political sources saying he was trying to delay his departure until elections scheduled for next year.
The ZANU-PF source said that was not the case. Anxious to avoid a protracted stalemate, party leaders were drawing up plans to dismiss Mugabe at the weekend if he refused to quit, the source said.
“There is no going back,” the source told Reuters. “It’s like a match delayed by heavy rain, with the home side leading 90-0 in the 89th minute.”
The army is camped on his doorstep.
His wife, Grace, is under house arrest, and her key political allies are in military custody.
The police, once a bastion of support, have showed no signs of resistance.
Furthermore, he has little popular backing in the capital, a stronghold of support for opposition parties that have tapped into the anger and frustration at his handling of the economy, which collapsed after the seizure of white-owned farms in 2000.
Unemployment is now running at nearly 90 percent and chronic shortages of hard currency have triggered hyperinflation, with the prices of imports rising as much as 50 per cent a month.
The only words Mugabe spoke at the graduation ceremony were met with ululations from the crowd.
In a telling irony, one of the graduates was the wife of Chiwenga.
The U.S., a longtime Mugabe critic, is seeking “a new era”, the State Department’s top official for Africa said, an implicit call for Mugabe to quit.
In an interview with Reuters, acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Donald Yamamoto appeared to dismiss the idea of keeping Mugabe in an interim or ceremonial role.
“It’s a transition to a new era for Zimbabwe, that’s really what we’re hoping for,” Yamamoto said.
The army appears to want Mugabe to go quietly and allow a smooth and bloodless transition to Emmerson Mnangagwa, the vice president, whose sacking last week triggered the military takeover.
The main goal of the generals is to prevent Mugabe from handing power to his wife, Grace, who appeared on the cusp of power after Mnangagwa was pushed out.

Mr. Olaseni Shalom

The United Global Resolve for Peace(UGRFP), an NGO, has warned against any form of financial and material inducement of voters in the Anambra governorship election scheduled for Nov. 18.
Mr Olaseni Shalom, UGRFP’s Executive Director, who briefed newsmen on Friday in Abuja, called for peaceful conduct of the election and for proper handling of threats by some groups to disrupt the process.
He said that UGRFP believed in `one man, one vote’ and not external influence as the international best practices of elections.
“We wish to denounce the disgraceful act of sharing money and gifts during elections, especially with regards to Anambra state.
“Over the years, aspirants shared items like money, bags of rice, bread, clothes among others.
“These actions are calculated to buy the collective conscience of Nigerians and such individuals cannot be said to vote out of their conviction in the capacity of the candidate.
“We have written to the Independent National Electoral Commission to engage the commission on dialogue on strategies to eradicate this disgraceful act.’’
Shalom said that the group was also collaborating with political parties and law enforcement agencies to ensure that voters were not induced in Anambra.
He urged the candidates to stand on the strength of their credibility instead of flagrant display of wealth.
The executive director commended the military for its response to the would-be security threat posed by the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) which had openly threatened to disrupt the election.
“However, we advise that actions of the military should conform to international human rights standards.
“We also call for a more articulate and enhanced security mechanism to rise up to the challenge and eliminate all forms of threat.
“On the other hand, such threats should not be treated with levity; we also call on all stakeholders to sheathe their swords  for the sake of peace and democracy,” he said.
He said that the voter turnout in previous elections in the Anambra state had been below 50 per cent and urged the voters to come out and en masse and exercise their franchise.
UGRFP promotes peaceful resolution of crisis generated as a result of human activity, civil unrest, agitations, conflict of interest among others, in line with UN Charter on Conflict Resolution.

Wearing a blue and yellow academic gown and mortar board hat, the 93-year-old sat in large wooden chair at the front the hall.
He was greeted by ululations from the crowd as he declared the ceremony open.
Earlier, leaders of Mugabe’s party are making plans to force him from office if the 93-year-old leader resists pressure from the army to quit.
The self-styled grand old man of African politics, the only leader Zimbabwe has known since independence in 1980, insists he is still in charge. But the source, a senior member of Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party, made clear the party wanted him gone.

Chronic shortages of hard currency are driving up the price of imports as much as 50 per cent a month.
On social media, Zimbabweans circulated a spoof message to Chiwenga demonstrating the depth of anger at Mugabe.
“If Mugabe refuses to resign, let the army take him to First Street and leave him there. People of Zim will negotiate with him,” the message read.
In a statement broadcast on national television, the military said it was “engaging” with Mugabe and would announce an outcome as soon as possible.

A pediatric doctor, Dr Juliet Ochi, has urged mothers and caregivers to avoid the use of medicated soap in washing the genitals of their female babies to prevent infection.
Ochi, a doctor at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Enugu.
According to her, it is better to use toilet soap.
“The genitals of the female have useful bacteria that protect it. The use of medicated soap could damage such bacteria, thereby causing an infection on that region.
“Medicated soap is meant for the skin. It is only on the prescription of a dermatologist that such soap should be used.
“Some are important and protect the region from contacting infection, so using medicated soap on it will mean removing them.
“Not all bacteria on the region are bad, some are very important and protect the vagina from germs.
“If you use medicated soap on the region, it means you are weakening the vagina’s defense system thereby attracting infection to the region,’’ she said.
Ochi urged females to also used mild toilet soap when washing their genitals.
She explained that medicated soaps make the vagina unfavorable for the good bacteria which could lead to candida, a fungus that causes yeast infection in females.

The ousted Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has been rejected by Congress of the People (Cope), an opposition party in South Africa.
The party said it rejects calls to offer Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe political asylum in South Africa.
The plea for asylum for Mugabe by South Africa is championed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Diaspora Forum (ADF).
The Zimbabwe army on Wednesday took control of the country, confining the veteran leader to his Harare home.
President Mugabe was reportedly resisting the army pressure to quit.
The EFF was first to make the asylum call, with its leader Julius Malema saying such a move would facilitate a peaceful transition in the southern African country.
“We call on the South African government to prepare to welcome President Mugabe for political asylum. He must be allowed to come to South Africa so that a peaceful transition can indeed take place.”
Zuma dispatched envoys as Botswana warns against travel to Zimbabwe, Africa Review reported.
ADF chairperson Marc Gbaffou also made a similar call to the South Africa government.
“Mugabe needs to leave Zimbabwe. I think he should be granted refugee status in one of the African countries and South Africa is well placed to host him because of its leadership role in the SADC,” he said.
However, Cope has called upon all South Africans to resist any attempts “to make South Africa the home of last resort of those leaders who have violated the Human Rights of the citizens of their very own countries”.
“South Africa is a Democratic and Human Rights sensitive nation. Allowing a pariah and disgraced leader such as Mugabe asylum in our country would be an affront to the values and principles upon which our Constitutional Democracy is based,” Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota, said.
President Mugabe’s sons study and reside in South Africa.
But Mr Lekota said instead of allowing leaders like Mugabe to make South Africa their home, the country should rather ensure that it remained a refuge of hope to those suppressed and defenceless citizens of Zimbabwe

The Southern Indian state of Telanagana has embarked on a unique way to get rid of open defecation, using drones.
As a pilot project, cops have deployed drones on the banks of a local reservoir in the state’s Karimnagar district to prevent people from defecating near the dam.
The Lower Manair Dam is a drinking water source for the people of Karimnagar town and “if successful, the scheme will be replicated in other districts also”, officials said on Friday.
Local police chief Kamalasan Reddy said the scheme has already started yielding results.
“The number of people indulging in open defecation has come down drastically,” he told the media.
Urination and defecation in the open are common in several parts of rural India and even in some semi-urban areas and a few urban areas too.
This is despite the Indian government offering cash incentives to subsidise construction of toilets, and initiating hygiene and sanitation awareness campaigns like “No Toilet, No Bride”.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made eliminating open defecation in this country a priority, and wants every home to be installed with a toilet by 2019.

A Cameraman with the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Mr Ikechukwu Onubogu, has been found dead four days after he was declared missing by members of his family.
Although the cause of his death remained sketchy, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the late Onubogu, who was at home with his wife, was said to have received a phone call in the afternoon on Nov. 12.
Sources said the deceased, thereafter, took his camera and left his home, located near the popular Aroma Junction in Awka but never returned.
His remains, now deposited at the Amaku Teaching Hospital, Awka, were reportedly discovered on Thursday by men of the Nigerian Police Force at Obosi, near Onitsha.
In a statement on Friday, Mr Uche Nworah, the Managing Director of ABS, described late Onubogu as a “peace loving man that you would never expect that anybody would want to harm him’’.
“The horrific death of our beloved and hardworking staff, Onubogu, has thrown the entire ABS family into mourning.
“He was dedicated to his job and would do anything to capture images that will help viewers to make meaning of every developing story.
“We will surely miss him. We cannot speculate at this time the circumstances leading to his death as the police is already working hard to unravel what happened.
“Our thoughts remain with his family, particularly his wife, who recently gave birth,” the statement said.
He said Onubogu’s death was a reminder of the dangers journalists face in Africa, in the course of discharging their professional responsibilities.
The managing director urged friends, colleagues and associates of late Onubogu to remember the family in their prayers, in their difficult time.
Confirming the incident, the state Police/Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nkeiru Nwode, while commiserating with the family, assured the public that the police would uncover Onobogu’s killers.
“The police has commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death; we assure the public that no stone would be left unturned, until the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Nwode said.

The U.S. is seeking “a new era” for Zimbabwe, the State Department’s top official for Africa said, implicitly calling on long-time President Robert Mugabe to step aside as a political crisis mounts.
In an interview with Reuters, acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Donald Yamamoto appeared to dismiss the idea of Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years, remaining in a transitional or ceremonial role.
“It’s a transition to a new era for Zimbabwe, that’s really what we’re hoping for,” Yamamoto said.
Zimbabwe’s army seized power on Wednesday, in an apparent effort to prevent Mugabe, 93, from handing power to his wife.
He has not resigned or been formally deposed, however, and he was pictured on Thursday shaking hands with the military chief, Constantino Chiwenga.
Yamamoto, speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with African Union officials at the State Department in Washington, described the situation in Zimbabwe as “very fluid.”
He said the U.S. would discuss lifting multiple U.S. sanctions on Zimbabwe if it began enacting political and economic reforms.
In a message for Zimbabwe’s political leaders, he said: “Our position has always been that if they engage in the constitutional reforms, economic and political reforms, and move forward to protecting political space and the human rights, then we can start the dialogue on lifting sanctions.”
The U.S. has not given aid to Zimbabwe’s government for many years, but provides development aid to nongovernmental groups, particularly for healthcare.
“Now whether we give to the government, that depends on what happens in Zimbabwe.”
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is due to meet on Friday in Washington with 37 African foreign ministers.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he had resolved to pay back the goodwill Nigerians extended towards him during his recent health challenge by protecting their interests with all the energy at his disposal.

He restated his administration’s commitment to improving security, fighting corruption and restructuring the economy.

Buhari spoke at the public presentation of a book, titled, “Making steady, sustainable progress for Nigeria’s Peace and Prosperity,” at the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said within the limited resources available to him, his administration would continue to give priority to security by addressing herdsmen/farmers’ clashes, kidnapping and armed robbery.

He also said his government was working quietly to secure the release of the remaining girls who were kidnapped in their school in Chibok, Borno State in 2014.

The President said, “I cannot thank Nigerians enough for your prayers and goodwill during my health vacation. I can only repay you by resolving to work by putting every ounce of my energy to protect your interest.

“We have gone through difficult times due to worldwide economic recession. We are coming out of recession and government efforts are targeted at easing economic hardships through creation of more jobs, social security platforms for vulnerable families and the unemployed and infrastructural progress.

“I would like to assure all Nigerians of my commitment to improve security, fight corruption and restructure the economy.

“On the current issues on herdsmen/farmers’ clashes, kidnapping and armed robbery within the confines of our limited resources, we are giving top priority to security.

“During the year, it was my great pleasure to secure the release of 102 Chibok schoolgirls. We are doing our best quietly and effectively as possible to get the rest released.

“We are working day and night with our international partners to release the remaining girls as soon as possible.

“We are all aware now that if you steal public funds and you are caught, you will face the law.

“Internationally, Nigeria is now a respected nation. I can’t keep up with invitations to visit other countries much less for other countries, leaders that want to visit us. A number of world leaders are expressing the desire to visit Nigeria virtually monthly. Our credit worthiness is sound; our first Eurobond offer was oversubscribed.”

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in his remarks, said Buhari had provided exemplary leadership for the country and demonstrated the political will and commitment to the task of building a new Nigeria in line with the change agenda promised Nigerians.

This, he said, had been exemplified by the administration’s efforts to deliver on election promises, largely hinged on fighting corruption, security and revamping the economy.

Odigie-Oyegun said major tests of how well the President had kept the party’s promises were the governorship elections in Kogi, Edo and Ondo states.

“Our victories in those elections were a resounding vote of confidence in our party and the achievements of our government,” he said.

The party chairman said the development of the 2017-2020 Economic Recovery and Growth Plan had laid the foundation for economic diversification, inclusive and sustainable growth and ultimately welfare for the citizens.

Odigie-Oyegun said in line with the party’s manifesto, job creation and social inclusion have been critical to the administration’s development programmes, as a response to unemployment, poverty and inequality.

He said despite spirited efforts to discredit ongoing anti-corruption efforts, the war against graft was being won.

The whistle-blowing programme, he noted, had encouraged citizens to report to relevant authorities, information about corrupt practices.

He said, “An often overlooked major achievement of the anti-corruption war is that President Buhari has brought the issue of corruption to the heart of national consciousness.

“Every single day, when you open the newspapers, read online, listen to radio or television, there are conversations going on about corruption.

“The fact that Nigerians are talking about it means we have not accepted it as a way of life and as long as the ordinary people continue to show that disdain for corruption, we would win the war sooner or later.

“The over-subscription of our Eurobonds for four consecutive times and our improved rating on ease of doing business ranking are key pointers to the increasing trust and confidence that investors and the international community generally have about our country and especially our government’s determination to fight corruption.”

He also noted the success so far recorded in the fight against terrorism under the present administration.

He admitted that the government needs to do more in propagating its achievements.

“We have a good trumpet to blow. We have good reasons to blow it. So, let us go out and blow it very well,” he urged party members.

On the allegation that the APC chiefs are denying some of their  campaign promises, the party chairman said  manifesto of any political party must  contain two categories of promises – “those that are achievable immediately and within the lifespan of the administration and; those that are aspirational.”

Deontary Wilder

WBC heavyweight champion Deontary Wilder has sensationally told ESPN that he will end Anthony Joshua’s boxing career when the two finally meet in the ring.

WBA and IBF champion Joshua is considered the biggest star in the division since dethroning the long-time face of heavyweight boxing in Wladimir Klitschko.

Following on from Joshua’s title defence over Carlos Takam on October 28 and Wilder’s first round stoppage of Bermane Stiverne a week later, talks have begun for a blockbuster unification bout in 2018, with both fighters’ promoters meeting in New York last week.

The pair have begun the verbal jousting with Wilder the latest to bite in an epic rant on ESPN’s Sports Nation programme in the U.S.

“Joshua, let’s make this fight happen man,” Wilder started.

“This is one of the biggest, most exciting fight in the world history. We could make records, we could set history on the time of the fight whenever it happens.

“I’m ready, I don’t know about you. You’ve had it easy, it’s been breezy for you.

“You’re ready to fight low opposition and get paid millions of dollars and you don’t want that gravy train to end, but I am the man that’s going to end your career.”

Wilder also insisted he “will bring boxing back to where it used to be” when the heavyweight division was booming with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman.
