Miss Monica Osagie, the victim in the sex-for-marks scandal at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has told an investigative panel that the disgraced Professor Richard Akindele deliberately failed her because she refused his sexual demand.
She said she did not score 33 per cent as the lecturer claimed, but was failed so that she could bow to his sexual demand.
Monica said this today when she appeared before the panel, her lawyer Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi told newsmen.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Osagie had appeared before the committee set up by the institution’s authorities in company of her counsel.
Osagie, a student in the Masters of Business programme, released a recorded telephone conversation, which went viral, in which the lecturer identified as Akindele, demanded five rounds of sex to enhance her marks.
The committee, which held its session at the Pro -Chancellor’s Lodge on the campus, allowed only Osagie and her counsel into the venue.
Journalists, students and some members of the National Human Rights Commission who came to witness the sitting were not allowed into the venue by security personnel of the institution who blocked the entrance.
Akiyode-Afolabi, who spoke with newsmen after the closed door session which lasted more than seven hours, said Osagie told the panel that she passed the course but was later failed by the don because of her refusal to sleep with him.
She said that Osagie narrated in details what transpired between her and the don, adding that lawyers present at the meeting were not allowed to make any contribution.
Akiyode-Afolabi , who is the Executive Director for Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, Abuja, said that Osagie also informed the panel that she recorded the conversation between her and the professor as an evidence.
She said Osagie also informed the panel that she reported the sexual harassment by the don to some lecturers in the university, adding that no action was taken by them.
Akiyode-Afolabi said some lawyers who represented the lecturers to whom Osagie claimed she reported the case, also appeared before the panel.
She said that Osagie also told the panel that she did not score 33 per cent as alleged but was failed so that she could bow to the sexual demands of the don.
Akiyode-Afolabi said she was optimistic that the outcome of the investigative panel would serve as a lesson to other lecturers who also engage in such act.
She, however, urged the panel to ensure that justice prevailed on the issue so as to maintain the integrity of the institution.
Akiyode-Afolabi, who did not allow Osagie to talk to newsmen, said her client would always be available to give evidence whenever she was called upon.
Members of the panel did not also speak with newsmen after the meeting.
NAN recalls that a recorded audio conversation of the don demanding for sex to increase the marks of the female postgraduate student had gone viral.
The audio recording generated reactions from a cross-section of the public, making the university authorities to set up an investigative panel.
NAN also recalls that the vice chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede on Friday confirmed the suspension of Akindele.
Ogunbodede, in a statement, said he had received and considered the interim report of the committee set up to investigate the allegation of sexual harassment revealed in the audio recording.
The vice chancellor said that though the investigative committee invited both Akindele and Osagie, only the don had appeared before the committee. LR News

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook found and removed 1.9 million social-media posts by the Islamic State and al Qaeda terrorists during the first three months of 2018, using new anti-terror algorithms.“In Q1[first quarter] we took action on 1.9 million pieces of ISIS [Islamic State terror group, outlawed in Russia] and al-Qaeda content, about twice as much from the previous quarter,” facebook said.
“Taking action means that we removed the vast majority of this content, and added a warning to a small portion that was shared for informational or counter speech purposes.”
Detection technology has been critical to progress detecting terrorist posts, with the Facebook counterterrorism team growing from 150 last June to 200 at present, with plans to continue expanding the team, the release explained.
“In Q1 2018, 99 percent of the ISIS and al-Qaeda content we took action on was not user reported,” facebook said.
“We found this material due to advances in our technology, but this also includes detection by our internal reviewers.”The median time for newly uploaded terrorist content to be flagged was less than one minute, Facebook noted.
However, because content receives less attention the longer it remains on line, the Facebook team also went back and reviewed older posts, accounting for 600,000 removals in the January-March quarter. Sputnik/LR News

The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has confirmed the killing of two of its priests, Rev Fathers Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha, in an early hour attack on St Ignatius Quasi Parish, Ukpor, Mbalom in Gwer West Local Government Council of Benue.

A statement by its Director of Communications, Rev Fr Moses Iorapuu, said that the attacks were perpetrated by herdsmen who stormed the Mbalom community and killed the two priests during the morning mass at the church.

The Diocese expressed regret at the nonchalant attitude of the security agencies in containing the killings.
It said the herdsmen, who stormed the community, burnt down houses, destroyed crops and killed people.

The church, therefore, urged the relevant authorities to stop the killings in the Benue valley.

Iorapuu said the Diocese had been active in providing food and relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) since the onset of hostilities in the state and wondered why it could be marked as a target of attacks.

“The attack on the priests is an attack on everything that we ever stood for and believed in.”

Meanwhile, concerted efforts to get reaction from the Benue Police Command failed as its Public Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, was not forthcoming with remarks.

Rev. Fr. Gor had before the attack written on Facebook; “Living in fear. The fulani herdsmen are still around us in Mbalom. They refuse to go. They still go grazing around us. No weapons to depend on ourselves”.

Herdsmen in the early hours of the morning attacked a Catholic Church and parishioners who went for 5.30 a.m. mass.
Reports say the bodies of the dead have been taken to St. Theresa’s Hospital Makurdi. LR News

Nunda, who was appointed in 2009, was sacked on Monday by Angolan President João Lourenço.
Lourenco is reported to have sacked his army forces’ chief of staff over corruption allegations in a deepening purge of senior figures linked with graft.
Last year, Gen Nunda said he was ready for retirement.
The Presidency statement further confirmed other 39 dismissals and appointments.
Lourenço, though was handpicked by his predecessor Jose Eduardo dos Santos, he has increasing ly asserted his authority.
He sacked his predecessor’s son, José Filomeno dos Santos, as the country’s head of the strategic $5 billion sovereign fund and replaced him with Mr Carlos Alberto Lopes, a former Finance minister.
The former Angolan president appointed his eldest son as president of Fundo Soberano de Angola in 2013, soon after its creation in October 2012.
President Lourenço also sacked Isabel dos Santos, the former president’s eldest daughter, as the chair of the board of the state-owned oil firm Sonangol. He replaced her with Mr Carlos Saturnino, an oil industry veteran.
Several other dos Santos kin and allies have been replaced from key government institutions, in moves seen as wrestling control from the man who ruled Angola for 38 years.

Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi & Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, has refuted reports credited to The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi, that he was in the U.S and refused to attend an investors’ summit.
Sanusi was quoted to have accused the minister and some others for being absent at U.S-Nigeria Investors’ Forum even when they were in the U.S.
The spokesman to the petroleum minister, Mr Idang Alibi, said Kachikwu was at another investors meeting in the UK.
”The office of the Minister has recently been beleaguered with various media reports concerning the absence of the Minister of State at the recent US-Nigeria Investment Summit held in Washington, DC.
”It is important to note that Kachikwu was not in the United States of America as reported and was not billed to attend the summit.
”He was in the United Kingdom where he had just concluded the facilitation of a key investment meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Royal Dutch Shell plc. led by the CEO, Bernardus Van Beurden, in London.
”He is committed to delivering the major aspirations of the #7BigWins of which Business and Investment Drive is a key theme”.
Finance minister Kemi Adeosun and CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, had similarly disowned the report with the explanation that they never confirmed they would attend the Summit in Washington.
They were not scheduled to attend the Nigeria-US Investment Summit because they had other engagement at the IMF which coincided with their official engagement.
The summit was organised by the Embassy of Nigeria in the United State and the absence of Adeosun and Emefiele sparked criticism from the Emir, who described the absence of government officials as carefree attitude to investment opportunities.
Minister for Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun (l) discussing with the Events and Meetings Consultant, of IMF/World Bank at the World Bank

The minister and CBN Governor on Sunday said they never confirmed attendance at the summit.
They said the meeting was not included in their schedule.
“I attend the IMFC which is the highest decision-making body of the IMF. My primary role here as well as having the Nigerian hat on is to represent 23 African countries. So one of the things I have to do is to issue a statement on behalf of those 23 which includes most of the Anglophone countries: South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania,” Adeosun said on Sunday.
“So, my primary role here, as well as having a Nigerian hat on is to represent the 23 African countries. There has been some controversy about the scheduling I wasn’t due at any event.
“I was here as a governor of the IMF and member of IMFC to represent those 23 African countries and that schedule is what I must adhere to,” Adeosun explained.
Emefiele said a plenary session of IMF finance ministers and Central Bank Governors was holding at the same time of the event.
Emefiele said the meetings in the IMF as well as the meeting at the World Bank takes pre-eminence over the investment summit. He added that he wasn’t consulted when the programme was organised. LR News

Ex-U.S. President George HW Bush hospitalised

Just days after burying his wife Barbara, who died at age 92, former President George H.W. Bush has been hospitalised after an infection he contracted spread to his blood.

Spokesman to the former president said on Monday that Bush was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.

“President Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital Sunday after contracting an infection that spread to his blood.
“He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. We will issue additional updates as events warrant,” Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.
Bush, 93, was hospitalised last April for two weeks due to a “mild case of pneumonia.” Earlier in 2017 he was hospitalized for 16 days, also to be treated for pneumonia.

He was temporarily placed on a ventilator and was treated in the intensive care unit.

His wife was also hospitalised around the same time to treat a case of bronchitis.

He also was hospitalised in 2015 in Maine after falling at home and breaking a bone in his neck, and in December 2014 for about a week for shortness of breath.
Bush spent Christmas 2012 in intensive care for a bronchitis-related cough and other issues.
Barbara died Tuesday, shortly after her family announced she was in failing health and would decline further medical treatment in favor of “comfort care.” There were no details of her specific health problems.
Bush was “broken-hearted” over the loss of his “beloved Barbara” and was said to have held her hand all day. He was “at her side” when she passed away, his chief of staff said.
The 41st president uses a wheelchair and an electric scooter for mobility after developing a form of Parkinson’s disease, and he has needed hospital treatment several times in recent years for respiratory problems.
Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993 and as vice president under Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989. He also served as a congressman and as director of the CIA.
