A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday discharged one Shehu Adamu, docked for stealing his own car from the police station.

Adamu, who resides at Utako Village, Abuja, and arraigned on a charge of theft, pleaded guilty after admitting to committing the offence.

He begged the court for leniency.

“I plead with this court to reduce my punishment for I know I am guilty of all the allegations.’’

The Judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, after listening to Adamu, discharged him and warned him not to commit any offence again.

He ordered him to sign a bond to be of good behaviour.

Maiwada also ordered the police to release the car to the defendant.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, had told the court that one Ugochukwu Ogbonna, a Mobile Police Officer attached Utako Police Station, reported the matter at the station.

“They were at a checkpoint, where the officer stopped the man to search his car and discovered that the man had no driver’s licence, and the car was later taken to the police station.

“The defendant later went to the station and fraudulently took the car without the consent of the police officer that arrested him,” Ukagha said.
She said that during police investigation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of his actions.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provisions of Section 288 of the Penal Code.

The Ekiti State House of Assembly on Tuesday lifted the suspension placed on two out of 12 of its members suspended in October 2018.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the lawmakers were reinstated at Tuesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Adeniran Lagbada.

Those who got a reprieve were Mr Temitope Fasanmi representing  Ado Constituency 1 and Mr Adewale Ayeni representing  Ikere Constituency 1.

The reinstatement followed the unanimous adoption of the report of the ad-hoc committee submitted by its Chairman, Mr Sunday Akinniyi.

The Speaker commended the committee for its speedy action and charged the two lawmakers to partner with their colleagues in moving the state forward.

The Chairman of the ad-hoc committee had earlier said the suspended lawmakers demonstrated humility and modesty in their conduct while under suspension.

Akinniyi said that the committee discovered that the duo never acted contrary to the restraint order placed on them.

NAN reports that 12 members of the assembly were suspended over their alleged involvement in the passage of a N10 billion supplementary budget toward the end of the tenure of the Ayo Fayose administration.

Other legislative activities  at Tuesday’s plenary included the passage of the bill on Ekiti  Sustainable Development Goals and the commitment of the State Property Protection ( Anti- Land Grabbing) Bill  to the House Committee on Lands and Housing for further scrutiny.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has rejected the N27,000 new national minimum wage adopted by the National Council of States on Tuesday.

The NLC Secretary-General, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

According to him, the council has no jurisdiction determining another amount after a Tripartite Committee had submitted its report.

“It is abysmal of government to be delaying the submission of an Executive Bill to the National Assembly and by wrongfully adopting N27,000 through the council of states,” he said.

However, Ozo-Eson said the NLC has scheduled an emergency National Executive Council meeting for Friday to weigh on the deadline given to government within which to submit an executive bill to the National Assembly.

The NLC scribe added that the Federal Government was only projecting a shutdown of the economy with its latest action.

“This is because workers should not be held responsible for any development after its NEC meeting on Friday,’’ he said.
