The Nigerian Police Force has reported the recovery of 9,657 assorted guns and firearms and 26,994 bullets, the fruits of its efforts to reduce the prohibited weapons in the hands of militiamen, bandits, herdsmen and vigilante groups in the country.
The police gave the update today in a statement by Acting Deputy commissioner Jimoh Moshood.
Moshood said the prohibited firearms recovered included artillery, apparatus for the discharge of any explosives of gas diffusing projectile, Rocket weapons, bombs and grenades, Machine-Guns and Machine-Pistols, Military rifles, namely; those of calibers 7.62mm, 9mm, .300 inches.
Others were Revolvers and Pistols whether rifled or unrifled (including flint-lock pistols and cap pistols, Pump action guns of all categories and other guns locally made to kill.
The police said the firearms recovery, still ongoing, is aimed at the full enforcement of the Firearms Act.
“Mopping-up and recovery of all prohibited firearms and illegally acquired weapons and will enable the Nigeria Police Force deal decisively with Herders/Farmers Clashes, Kidnappings, Armed Robbery, Cattle Rustling, Militancy and Terrorism”, the police spokesman said.
The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris on 21 February, 2018 had directed the Commissioners of Police of all the State Commands of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja and their Supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police of the Twelve Zonal Commands in the Country, and the Force Headquarters Joint Task Enforcement Team to mop up the prohibited firearms and ammunition and weapons.
After the expiration of the grace period of 21 days, the police swung into actions and embarked on Mop-up, Seizure and Recovery of all illegal and prohibited firearms and ammunition in wrong hands, suspected Militias, Militants, Criminal/Unlawful Gangs through search, raid and seizure from identified premises, hideouts, dwelling houses, buildings and sites where these illegal/prohibited firearms were kept based on reasonable suspicion and intelligence.

The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), to immediately end the payment of fines by Nigerians holding dual citizenship at the nation’s international airports.

The Minister of Interior, Lt Gen. (Rtd) Abdulrahman Dambazau, made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the directives are in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to make movement easy for Nigerians with dual citizenship to come into their father-land unhindered.

According to him, “As a new government policy, on no account should any Nigerian traveller holding dual citizenship pay fine for so-called overstay”.

He said that it was a crime to ask or pay any money in that regard and stressed that under the new policy, “Citizens with dual nationality should only present both travelling documents of their countries of nationality to the immigration officials upon arrival and departure, regardless of whichever they are using to travel”.

Dambazau emphasized that the NIS should ensure immediate compliance with the new government directives as the government would sanction any Immigration official who is found collecting such fines henceforth.

He asked that Nigerians with dual citizenship should report any Immigration official who imposes such charges on them to the appropriate authorities.

Police have confirmed that two persons were killed by robbers who raided a new generation bank in Igede Ekiti late on Wednesday.
The police also confirmed on Thursday that some other people sustained injuries and reported that they have beefed up security in and around all the banks in Ekiti state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the victims included an official of the bank and a private security guard also at the bank.
The Police Public Relations Officer {PPRO}, Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu, said police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers.
Ikechukwu, however, did not confirm if the robbers made away with any cash from the bank but that there was an exchange of gunshots with the robbers.
He said that counter attack forced the robbers to flee the scene upon realising that the police were closing in on them.
The robbers, police said, drove into the bush and escaped into the thick forest which had already been surrounded by the police while officers were combing the bush in search of the robbers.
“As we speak, our Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) and State Intelligence Investigation Department (SIID) have drafted their men for intelligence gathering, while mobile policemen are on road and other critical areas”, he said.
Ikechukwu, however, urged members of the public to go about their normal businesses, assuring that the police are on top of the situation.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has summited his Expression of Interest and Nomination Form to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) office in Abuja.

The PDP made the announcement on Thursday through their Twitter handle.

Dogara who is seeking a re-election is running under the platform of the opposition party.

He was accompanied by his supporters to the party’s National Secretariat.
