The Ogun Government on Thursday announced an indefinite suspension of trading and other non-sporting activities at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta with effect from September 13.

The government also ordered all traders and shop owners operating within the premises to move their valuables out before the said date.

The Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, made this known in Abeokuta, at the end of a meeting with the traders and security chiefs in the state.

Adeoluwa said: “We agreed that problems at the stadium have become unacceptable and must be immediately addressed.

“We also agreed that all non-sporting activities should be suspended in the stadium with effect from September13, pending the decisions of the task force.’’

Adeoluwa told the traders that the state government was mindful of the fact that they earn their living from the facility and as such would not subject them to any undue hardship.

He said the stakeholders also agreed that social vices such as teenage prostitution, drug trafficking, noise and environmental pollutions had assumed an alarming dimension and must be tackled head-on.

Adeoluwa also announced the constitution of a Joint Task Force comprising traders, security agencies and government officials to find lasting solutions to the trend.

Earlier, some traders including Sofela Sodunke, Rasak Olalekan and Lateef Babatunde, expressed delight at the meeting and pledged their readiness to cooperate with the government to restore normalcy and decency to the stadium.

Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Aisha Alhassan

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Alhassan, has deplored social media attacks on her over her remarks of support to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2019.

Alhassan, who fielded questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Thursday, said that she stood by her words, adding “let the will of God be’’.

She had on Wednesday disclosed in a BBC Hausa Service interview that she would rather resign as minister than abandon former vice the president “if he decides to run for presidential elections in 2019’’.

On prospects of retaining her job after the BBC interview, the minister said that she was not afraid of being sacked by the Buhari administration.

According to her, God gives and God takes (power). That is all and I have said it all in Hausa.

Alhassan, who was reported to have paid Sallah homage to Atiku Abubakar at the weekend, was quoted as saying that her decision to support him was because the former vice president was her godfather.

She stated that she would support the man even if Buhari decided to seek re-election in 2019.
She said that Buhari was an “understanding man’’ and would understand her reasons.

Obafemi Awolowo University

Two people have been injured in a fight that ensued between Students Union Government leaders of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State on Tuesday, The Punch is reporting.

During the fight, the Vice President of the union, Jacob Tosin, allegedly broke a bottle and stabbed the Social Director, Adedayo Emmanuel, in the arm.

It was learnt that Tosin, who also received a head butt from Emmanuel, had been admitted to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, Ile-Ife.

PUNCH Metro said it gathered that the fight started when a meeting was held on how to spend a sum of N3.8 million released to the union by the university management.

The student leaders had earlier been accused of misappropriation when they used a previous disbursement of N3 million in June to purchase a bus.

Though the union executive members said the bus was purchased for N2.5 million, students of the institution insisted that the bus was bought for N900,000.

During the Tuesday meeting, one of the leaders told PUNCH Metro that the union’s President, Ibukun Edward, asked other executive members for a project that could be financed with the N3.8 million.

While the president reportedly suggested the construction of a relaxation centre for the students, the Public Relations Officer, Simon Okediji, reportedly pushed for a library.

The Welfare Director, Ajiboye Adekanmi, was said to have asked that a staircase to a major lecture theatre be constructed, among others.

The VP, popularly called Emerald, was said to have proposed that freshmen’s packages should be sponsored with part of the money.
Her plan was allegedly rejected.

According to the executive member, who did not want to be named, Emerald flared up and attempted to leave the meeting, but was persuaded to stay till the end.

He said: “She proposed N1.4 million for the freshmen’s packages. We told her that when we get the dues for this session, we would look into her suggestion.

She flared up and was about leaving the meeting when Lamba (Emmanuel) jokingly told her not to leave and stood on her way. She slapped him twice and held his shirt.

“We separated them and continued with the meeting, but the VP was still angry. After a while, we just saw her rushing to open the refrigerator of the president; she was looking for a bottle.

We thought it was a joke and someone pointed her attention to an empty bottle; she smashed it on the table. When the bottle didn’t break, she smashed it on the floor and took a part of the broken bottle, charged at Lamba and stabbed him in the arm. While we struggled to collect the bottle, Lamba also headbutted her.”

When contacted on the telephone, Emerald’s phone was picked by her friend, one Dayo.
She said: “This is not Emerald. This is her friend. She is not feeling fine at all. She can’t speak right now. When she is okay, she will get back to you.”

Dayo explained that Emerald had been referred to the Seventh Day Adventist for treatment by the OAU Health Centre, where she was initially rushed to.

Attempts to reach Lamba proved abortive as calls put across to his telephone number didn’t go through.
However, the PRO of the OAU SUG confirmed the incident.

He said: “What happened is not something we can keep elaborating on. The breaking of a bottle occurred in a meeting held inside the president’s office is not an issue for public consumption and it has been resolved.

Even at home and at the federal level, we have misunderstanding. So, we had one here and it has been settled. This is a human setting and anybody can pick an offence.”

Also, the Head of OAU, Students Affairs Division, Prof. Isiaka Aransi, confirmed that N3.8 million was released to the union leaders.

“The money has been disbursed. It is their money and it was approved for disbursement," Aransi added.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has denied probing the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnogen.

The commission expressed dismay that its secret probing of some past and present officials has been leaked to the media, therefore jeopardising investigation.

The commission was reacting to a report published by a national newspaper that also listed several high profile persons, including former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; and Justice Abdu Kafarati of the Federal High Court, among the people under probe.

The EFCC denied that it was the source of the leak, according to a statement by Wilson Uwujaren, its spokesman, although the agency admitted sending a list to the office of the the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), based on request.

Uwujaren said in the statement: “It is important to state that this report did not emanate from the EFCC and the allusion to ‘an EFCC source’ is diversionary and mischievous.

“For the avoidance of doubt, cases under investigation communicated to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation by the Commission are classified information and it is troubling how such would be leaked to the media.

“The mastermind of this leak is out to create disaffection between the Commission and, particularly, the Judiciary. The Commission wishes to state categorically that it is currently not investigating Justices Onnoghen and Kafarati.

“While Onnoghen was being considered for his present position, the Commission received some petitions which were investigated and found to be without merit and discarded.

“Indeed, much damage has been done to the Commission’s investigation activities by this leak especially as some of the cases mentioned are still at preliminary stages of investigation.”

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL has called on the Federal government and the relevant anti-graft agencies to ensure that the full wrath is applied to culprits in the alleged diversion of the sum of about N3.2bn belonging to the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Benue State, between 2012 and 2014.

Expressing the position of CACOL on the reported diversion, Mr. Debo Adeniran, the Executive Chairman of the Centre said “It is very disheartening to hear that such humongous corrupt acts actually transpired in a state like, Benue that is currently facing serious humanitarian challenges following the tragedy of the floods that rendered about 100, 000 people homeless added with the loss of lives and property.”

“The Benue case is yet another manifestation of how inhuman, the incurably corrupt persons occupying our public spaces can get. From the reports in the media and following the step taken by the FG and the Attorney General of the Federation’s office, this is case must not go the way of others which were apparently not diligently handled and has led to so many corruption criminals wriggling through the lapses in our laws to escape justice.”

A certain Solomon Wombo, who was an aide to a former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, and two other former top civil servants in the state were charged by the FG with the diversion of about N16.6bn belonging to the 23 local government areas of the state.

Adeniran in concluding said “it a good thing the FG and AGF’s office are already active on the case but we think the investigations should be broadened to also expose and punish all the collaborators in the perpetration of corruption to such big magnitude. The former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam whose name rings in the background the fraud may also have some questions to answer.”
