Catholic priest, who was abducted on Wednesday in Delta State, has regained his freedom.

Reverend Father Andrew Anah, the parish priest of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Obomkpa, was abducted by gunmen along the Obomkpa/Issele-Uku Road.

It was the second time he would be abducted in less than 12 months.

The Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Andew Aniamaka, confirmed that the priest had regained his freedom.

He said the police would ensure that the culprits are apprehended.

Father Anah was first kidnapped in August 2017 along the same road. He was released after an undisclosed sun was allegedly paid.

This comes about 48 hours after Governor Ifeanyi Okowa decried the rising activities of kidnappers in the state. The governor lamented about the crime state while addressing some traditional rulers in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.

The Obomkpa/Ukwu-Nzu and now Olona axis of Aniocha North have been terrorized by kidnappers for some time now. Apart from the priest, several others have been abducted in the area.

A managing director for a construction company, the Chairman of the Aniocha North Traditional Rulers’ committee, Obi Sunday Olisenweoku and the monarch of Ogodo Community are among those abducted there in recent months.

The Senate has called on the police to reduce roadblocks mounted on the highways in the southeastern region in the country.
The lawmakers made the plea during plenary on Thursday at the red chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, the lawmaker representing Abia North, had raised a motion to inform the Senate of an increase in armed roadblocks along major expressways in the region.

He decried that such situation hampers free movement of persons and services on the major roads while the presence of military personnel in the region poses a major concern to the people.

Senator Victor Umeh also said the presence of roadblocks along the South-East zone must be reduced to ensure people get to their destinations faster.

“Checkpoints are necessary, but the numbers are too high,” the lawmaker noted.

Consequently, the lawmakers urged the police and military to always seek to balance the imperatives of national security in the monitoring of an environment, especially when there are no evident security breaches.

They also direct the Senate Committees on Police and Army to take a tour of the South-East expressways to investigate the matter and report back to the chamber.

Thanking Senator Mao for raising the motion, Senate President Bukola Saraki brought his colleagues’ attention to the death of seven police officers who died on Monday.

He said as much as the National Assembly pays attention to ordinary citizens that lose their lives, they should do even more for those who die while protecting the lives of Nigerians.

”I would like us to please find out the circumstances around the killings of these seven police officers and how we can also commiserate with their families so that they know that we do care and we do know what they are doing to keep us all safe,” Senator Saraki said.

He also urged the Senate Committee Chairman on Police to look into the incident and report to the lawmakers next week.

Catholic priest of the Sacred Heart Parish, Obomkpa in Delta State, Reverend Andrew Anah, has been kidnapped.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the abduction to Channels Television on Thursday, stating that this is the second time the same priest will be abducted.

Mr Anah was kidnapped in 2017 but was later released after an undisclosed ransom was allegedly paid to the abductors.

While the circumstances surrounding the fresh kidnap are still unclear, Our correspondents gathered that some informants may be collaborating with a kidnap syndicate in Aniocha north to perpetrate such crimes.

Residents say the Obomkpa/Ukwu-Nzu and now Olona Axis of Aniocha North have remained notorious for such crimes as that is the same area where the reverend was kidnapped the first time.

Other persons such as the Managing Director of a construction company, as well as the chairman of the Aniocha north Traditional Rulers’ Committee, Mr Obi Sunday Olisenweokwu, were reportedly kidnapped around the area.

The Police, however, assured the public that it will do everything to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice and the victim is rescued.

Just recently, a Methodist priest (Reverend) Kayode Akande and two other church leaders were kidnapped in Osun State while returning from a church programme.

They, however, regained their freedom about a week after.

In April, gunmen stormed the St Ignatius Catholic Church in Benue State, killing two priests and other members of the church who were holding a funeral service.

Following the spate of attacks in the state since the beginning of the year which has left hundreds dead and several other displaced, the Benue State government said the state was under a siege.

Subsequently, the Catholic Mission in Nigeria held a nationwide prayer and peaceful protest against the incessant killings across the country.

Beyond that, there have been several calls for security reforms to ensure greater efficiency and service delivery across the nation.

Thousands of Chinese are pouring out their grief on social media following the death of a  “psychic” cat, Baidian’er that correctly predicted the outcome of Nigeria and Argentina match at Russia FIFA World Cup.

The cat, bearing the name that means white spot in Chinese, also predicted the outcome of five other World Cup games.

The orange-furred tabby was a stray cat that prowled around the Palace Museum in Beijing’s Forbidden City.

He was offered two bowls of food, with the flags of competing World Cup teams stuck in the ground behind them to make the predictions.

He achieved such fame that the Palace Museum even set up an account for him on China’s Weibo, a popular Twitter-like platform.

Unfortunately, Baidian’er’s correct prediction of an Argentinian win against Nigeria turned out to be his last.

The museum said the cat fell ill and finally announced its death on Monday, sparking almost 10,000 comments on Weibo.

“Every time I go to the Forbidden City, I have to go see Baidian’er, take a photo, play for a while, see him sleep on the grass in the sun,” wrote one distraught user.

“Go on living a happy life in Cat Heaven, I’ll see you again.”

It has not been a good week for animal prognosticators.

In Japan, an octopus caught in the northern region of Hokkaido correctly predicted the outcome of three of Japan’s World Cup matches, but like the Blue Samurai met an unfortunate fate.

Even before Japan qualified for the final 16, the octopus named Rabio was reportedly sold and turned into sashimi.

Rabio was following on from the most successful salty soothsayer, an Octopus named Paul who achieved global fame by correctly predicting eight 2010 World Cup games from his aquarium in Germany.

Paul became a worldwide media sensation, with his latter predictions covered by hordes of international media.

But Paul fell offside with his home fans after correctly predicting that Germany would lose to Spain. His aquarium received menacing letters threatening to turn him into a tasty dish.

In the stands, the honour of Paul’s mother was called into question and some sections of the crowd watching on giant screens in Berlin sang anti-octopus songs

The trial of suspected kidnapper, Chukwueme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, before a Special Offences Court in Lagos was stalled on Wednesday.

Evans’ trial could not continue as his new counsel, Nuel Brown, again asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file properly.

The prosecuting counsel, Adebayo Haroun, did not object to the request for an adjournment.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, therefore, adjourned the case till October 5 and 19, 2018, for the continuation of trial.

Brown was hired by Evans following the withdrawal of Olukoya Ogungbeje, his former lead defence counsel.

Ogungbeje had on June 13 announced that he was withdrawing for personal reasons, after alleging that there were threats to his life.

In the four counts before the court, Evans is standing trial alongside Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba.

They were charged with kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.

The defendants were also accused of kidnapping one Mr Sylvanus Ahamonu, holding him hostage for at least nine weeks and collecting a ransom of $420,000 from his family.
