Sen. President, Dr. Bukola Saraki

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Monday said the strength of Nigeria with a population of nearly 200 million lay in its diversity.
He stated this at a Public Hearing on National Orientation Agency (NOA) Amendment Bill, organised by Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation in Abuja.
Saraki, who represented by Sen. Philip Aduda said “if we could be more tolerant of our differences and see ourselves as brothers and sisters, it will be difficult to rise against one another.”
He explained that the Bill sought to provide a framework for the activities of Global Initiative for Harmony in Nigeria Corps under the supervision of the Director-General of NOA.
Saraki raised concerns that Nigeria was faced with a disturbing level of violence, mutual suspicion among ethnic groups and a general lack of belief in government by its citizens.
“We cannot continue in this direction if we truly want to achieve greatness as a nation.
“The NOA is the body tasked with communicating government policies, staying abreast of public opinion and promoting patriotism and national development.”
He said that increasing the capacity of the agency would result to taking concrete steps toward promoting global initiative for harmony in Nigeria.
The president of the senate stated that Nigeria would be one of the best places in the world when its people became instruments and promoters of peaceful coexistence.
In his remarks, Chairman of the committee, Sen. Suleiman Adokwe, said the corps was more or less a voluntary organisation that sought to create orderliness in the society.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nasarawa State Command, says it has rescued a housewife, Mrs. Fatima Muhammed, 18, and Hafsat Adamu, 15,  who were allegedly abducted by a yet-to-be-identified criminal.

The state commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Mamud Gidado-Fari, who disclosed this in an interview with Northern City News on Sunday, said the victims were rescued last Friday at Line Supper Cinema in the Lafia Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, one Ibrahim Nasir reported to the command that his wife had been kidnapped by certain unknown person.

Gidado-Fari said security operatives swung into action, rescued the housewife and handed her over to her husband.

Gidado-Fari explained that the housewife was found at the kidnapper’s hideout, where she had been locked up for a week by the suspect.

“We forced our way into the room and found the woman alongside a 15-year-old girl, Hasat Adamu,” he said.

He said the teenager had also been handed over to her parents, noting that the motive of the abductor had yet to be determined.

The commandant said, “The nature of the case is what we are trying to investigate because as it is, we don’t know whether the motive of the abductor was ransom or for ritual. The suspect is at large, but by the time we get him, we shall investigate his motive.”

But Fatima said she was not abducted, saying she was at her lover’s place when some NSCDC operatives broke into the room and whisked her away.

She said, “I was with my sick mother from morning till evening and when it was time for me to go home I decided to see my old boyfriend at the Tudun kwari area of Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, because I didn’t have money for transport.

“I had to stay till the following day because it was late and before I knew what was happening, I saw NSCDC (operatives) breaking into my boyfriend’s room and that was how I was arrested.”

She stated that she left her matrimonial home because she had been having issues with her husband since they got married.

“I am a married woman, but I left my matrimonial home because I have been having quarrels with my husband ever since we got married. My husband had told me not to go anywhere there is crisis and there was never a day I disobeyed him,” Fatima stated.

Meanwhile, Gidado-Fari told Nothern City News that the Nasarawa NSCDC command had arrested over 15 suspected criminals within two weeks, noting that they were apprehended for various offences bordering on theft, kidnapping, rape and armed robbery.

Gidado-Fari explained that seven of the suspects had been charged to court while the remaining suspects would be arraigned this week.

I wonder what has taken over the humanity of so many Nigerians.

This is Africa, we are blacks, disciplining a child to correct them is our culture, and it has been that way ever since.

Haven't you ever heard of the sentence "spare the world and spoil the child"?

We were all disciplined as kids to reset our mumu button and it can't stop now.

A teacher has lost her life in the hands of an over protective mother simply because she disciplined a rude child of her classroom.

This unfortunate incident was shared by a Facebook user Eze Amadi, he wrote;

"It was a tearful Wednesday, yesterday 29th November, 2017 as parents of one Okafor Chinaza aged 14, a student of starlight secondary school Ogidi fight and killed their daughter's teacher for flogging her.

According to information reaching our correspondents: It was said that the student in question was flogged by her Igbo teacher and class mistress earlier in the morning for not sweeping the class according to class roster, when the teacher walked in to teach them, she found out that the class was not cleared as previous day refuse littered round the class room, she called out the girl for questioning as regards to why she didn't sweep the class room, she responded insulting to the teacher according to fellow student's present in the class room.

In response, the teacher asked her to kneel down before the class she refused as the teacher annoyingly flogged her and she fled the class from the school fence, and ran home.

A train transporting fertilizer from Lagos to Kaduna on Sunday derailed at Omi-Adio area of Ibadan, Oyo State, blocking the railway crossing and causing gridlock.

No life was lost and no loss of goods was recorded as a result of the derailment.

An official of the Nigeria Railway Corporation in Ibadan, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the NRC, said the Ibadan office of the NRC had no equipment to channel the train back on the rail.

He, however, said the railway crossing had been cleared for vehicles to pass.

He said, “The train, which is called Fertilizer Special, was conveying fertiliser from Lagos to Kaduna en-route to Ibadan. It derailed around Omi-Adio in Ibadan and could not continue the journey. The train did not fall off the track, so no injury was recorded and no life was lost. Because it did not fall, it did not spill its contents. It has to be re-railed before it can continue. Unfortunately, what is required to do that is a crane, which is not available in the Ibadan office of the NRC.

“What is available here is the track jerk which cannot do work of this magnitude. A crane has to be brought from Lagos for the train to continue the journey. The delay is inevitable after what happened. Officials of the NRC in Ibadan responded immediately after the incident happened and the railway crossing has been cleared for vehicles to pass.”

Asked if the incident was caused by faulty or ageing railway track, the official said thorough assessment of the incident had yet to be carried out.

“The train might have derailed due to a few technical reasons that included a gap in the track. But we cannot say what actually caused it for now until a thorough investigation is carried out by relevant teams of assessors from the NRC,” he added.

The District Manager of NRC, Ibadan, Mr. Akinwale Akintola, confirmed the incident.
He said investigation was on to unravel the circumstances that led to the accident and to forestall a recurrence.
