The Nigerian Army said today that it will punish some soldiers who blocked Maiduguri Airport over suspicions that they were going to be deployed to the battle front against Boko Haram.
Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. General A.M. Dikko made it crystal clear that they would be disciplined in accordance with military laws.
“We don’t punish in the military. We discipline. Discipline is the bedrock of the job. If there’s no discipline, then we can’t have an army. So if a soldier errs, he must be corrected”, Dikko said at an event in Maiduguri today.
Two weeks ago, riotous troops, who claimed they had overstayed in Borno state blocked the airport for at least two hours, to resist fresh deployment to Boko Haram fronts.
The Nigerian Army later described them as ‘unscrupulous”.
Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, Deputy Director Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole Theatre Command said the protest by the few unscrupulous troops happened while the command was conducting a redeployment of soldiers at the Maiduguri Airport, following a directive to review troops’ deployment in Maiduguri metropolis, to reinvigorate the security architecture of the city.
“The redeployment became expedient after a recent assessment of the security situation by the Theatre Command. Regrettably however, a few of the troops who had misunderstood the development and erroneously assumed it was going to negatively affect their rotation from the theatre of operation became agitated and reacted by firing into the air.”
Maj. General Dikko, spoke on the issue today and said disciplinary actions would be taken against them.
Dikko said the military will not condone any act of mutiny by soldiers fighting Boko Haram.
He condemned the act of mutiny under any guise, maintaining that the law and ethics which the Nigerian Army is guided by would take its full course on errant soldiers.
Dikko reminded them of their oath of recruitment pointing out that they voluntarily joined the military and as such must be disciplined.
“You have decided to put your life on the line for the territorial integrity of Nigeria. So it is very important that we are reminded of our roles and responsibilities to the nation and our responsibility to the society, most importantly our responsibility to ourselves because we are not a conscript army. We are a regular military.
“Those who have volunteered to serve and that is the only time you will volunteer, subsequently having offered your service, it is the responsibility of the services to deploy you where they find you appropriate.
“So it is important that we continue to retain our professional comportment so that we can serve diligently. It’s important that we uphold the values and ethics of the system that we belong to,”said Dikko.
“It is also important that we understand it is a service to our fatherland. It is not a service to ourselves.
“The bedrock of your service as a soldier is discipline. A soldier must remain disciplined at all times. A soldier must obey instructions”.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has introduced the transfer of e-ID Card to any NIMC Registration and Card Collection Centres of enrolee’s choice for collection.
The Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC, Mr. Loveday Ogbonna, said the request could be made from any of the NIMC Registration and Card Collection Centres nationwide, other than where the individual enrolled for the National Identification Number (NIN).
According to him, the transfer process is necessitated by a survey carried out by the Customer Care Unit of the Commission.
The survey shows that many registered applicants were yet to pick up their e-ID cards because they have either relocated from where they enrolled, or have changed the phone numbers they provided at the point of enrolment into the National Identity Database (NIDB).
She called on such persons to visit any NIMC office closest to them to request for a card transfer form, which they would fill, and submit to the State Coordinator or Local Government Supervisor for processing.
The service, she said, was free for now and Ogbonna called on all individuals who have received the card collection notification either via SMS or emails to proceed to the enrolment Centre where they registered to pick up their cards.
They could also visit any NIMC Centre nearest to them to request for Card transfer if they have relocated from where they enrolled.
“For some people who have received SMS for Card collection but may have changed location from where they initially registered, they can walk into any NIMC office near them and make a card transfer request by filling a Card Transfer Form indicating where they now want the card to be sent.”
Explaining the process, he said an applicant should visit the specific Card collection Centre where he will like to pick up his National e-ID Card, and initiate the Card transfer process after he/she has received the SMS or email that the Card is ready.
“The applicant must came along with his/her NIN Slip, as well as evidence of notification, which could be via a text message, email or the NIMC portal before the card transfer process can be verified and initiated after due diligence.
“The authorized officer then commences the transfer by sending a request to the NIMC Headquarters, and the Cards will be rescheduled and dispatched to the requested locations; the applicant will be called by the Card activation officer to visit the requested Centre to pick up his/her Card.” Mr. Ogbonna further explained.

President Muhammadu Buhari has praised Nigerian troops for their service and dedication to the nation, urging them to remain ‘‘ruthless’’ in the battle against armed robbers, cattle rustlers and bandits.

President Buhari addressed the troops on Saturday at the Umar Musa Airport in Katsina State before leaving for Abuja.

He told the troops, which were deployed to curb the activities of bandits and criminals in Zamfara and neighbouring states under Operations Sharan Daji and Diran Mikiya, that he was pleased with their performance adding that Nigerians deserved to live in peace.

He then tasked them to deal with any armed robber, cattle rustler and bandit as ruthlessly as humanly possible.

“I am here and pleased at this opportunity to address you and express my pleasure and happiness as your Commander-in-Chief on your performance on the two respective operations.

‘‘Nigerians are looking up to you and us to secure the country. What is happening in the areas of operations are disgraceful. I’m very pleased with the way officers and men are firmly putting it down and I want you to be as ruthless as humanly possible. Nigerians deserve some peace.

‘‘The country has to be secured to be managed. We have been doing our best and we depend a lot on you to do what is needed in the field. I do not want you to spare any cattle rustler, armed robber or any person who thinks he is above the law,” he said.

The president reminded the troops that his administration had at inception pledged to provide security, enhance the economy and fight corruption.

He, however, commended the troops for the display of gallantry in the field of operations in Zamfara, Kaduna and some parts of Katsina state.

Members of the UN Security Council have welcomed the publication of the final results of the presidential polls in Mali, which saw the re-election of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.
In a press statement, the 15-member Council insisted on the urgent need to accelerate the implementation of the peace agreement.
The Constitutional Court of Mali validated, a few days ago, the provisional results of the second round of the presidential election and proclaimed Keita the victor.
The Security Council congratulated the people and Government of Mali “for the generally peaceful conduct of the polls of July 29 and Aug. 12, 2018, despite difficult security conditions and limited cases violence in certain areas’’.
The 15-member body congratulated the Malian authorities for the preparation, conduct and conclusion of this election, within the constitutional framework.
It also congratulated the Head of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission (MINUSMA), Mahamat Annadif, for his good offices throughout the electoral process, and MINUSMA for its logistical and security assistance to the Malian government.
The Security Council congratulated all national, regional and international election observation missions, including those of ECOWAS, the AU, the EU and the UN for their positive contributions to the electoral process.
Council members called on all Malians “to join forces and work together to promote lasting peace and address the security and development challenges facing Mali’’.
They expressed their intention to continue working with the Malian people and government to support inclusive and sustainable peace and security throughout the country.
Members of the Security Council stressed “the absolute urgency’’ for the Government of Mali and the armed groups of the Azawad Platform and Movement Coordination “to take unprecedented steps to fulfil their obligations fully and rapidly remaining in the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali’’.
The Security Council declared that “lasting peace and security in the Sahel region would not be possible without a full, effective and inclusive implementation of this Agreement’’.
MINUSMA has been busy providing logistical support to the Government of Keïta, especially in the restive north and centre, where an alliance of militant Islamists and Tuareg rebels have been launching attacks with increasing frequency and ferocity against government troops and UN peacekeepers.
When Keïta was first elected in 2013, his administration replaced a transitional government, which had wrested back control – with international support – of the outlying regions following a failed coup that saw the iconic and ancient city of Timbuktu occupied by militants.
Dozens of UN peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice, defending Mali’s fragile recovery in recent years.

Members of the much-talk-about Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) would henceforth wear police uniform with full identification.
The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Ibrahim Idris, gave the order on Friday which he said should be carried out pending the launch of new uniform for them.
The Force Spokesman, the Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Mr. Jimoh Moshood, said in Abuja on Friday that Idris gave the order at meeting with critical stakeholders.
Moshood said that Idris was represented at the meeting by the Deputy Inspector-General of police in Charge of Operations, Mr Habila Joshak.
He said the meeting was convened to brief the stakeholders on the progress made so far in the overhaul of the SARS now known as Federal SARS.
The Police boss said that the overhaul of SARS was beyond rhetoric as strategic reforms were being implemented.
He said that the FSARS operatives had been ordered to desist from attending to civil or commercial matters henceforth and focus strictly on armed robbery and kidnapping cases only.
According to Moshood, the Commissioner of Police in charge of FSARS, Mr Habiru Gwandu, informed the meeting that a human rights desk had been created in the 36 states of the federation and FCT.
He said that the desks would address cases of infractions against members of the public by FSARS personnel across the nation.
Gwandu added that the Police had engaged the services of psychologists and counsellors in the ongoing screening of FSARS operatives.
On his part, the DCP in charge of the I-G’s X-Squad, Amaechi Elumelu, said in the statement that the screening and mobilization of FSARS Operatives would not be business as usual again.
He said that FSARS operatives would undergo through rigorous orientation including human rights training among other screening processes.
Elumelu said that the I-G would soon unveil the Custody Records Management System.
He explained that this system would contain the records of arrests, detentions and welfare details of suspects.
The commissioner said that this system would discourage arbitrary arrest of people and ensure that suspects were charged to court within 24 hours, in compliance with the law.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that then Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Aug. 14, directed the immediate overhaul of the SARS. LR News
