The Nigerian Police Force has asked Senate President Bukola Saraki to respond to allegations linking him to the Offa bank robbery, within 48 hours rather than appearing in person.

The announcement comes minutes after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo met behind closed-doors with the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, as well as the head of State Security Service, Lawal Daura, at the State House.

The police had said on Sunday that it would be inviting Saraki as five of the robbery suspects, reported to have confessed to the crime, indicted him.

The five gang leaders had claimed that they were political thugs of the Senate President and the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed.

The Force Spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement, said the bank robbery led to the death of 33 persons including some pregnant women and nice police officers.

“The Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki is being invited by the Nigeria Police Force to report to the Force Intelligence Response Team office at Guzape, Abuja to answer to the allegations levelled against him from the confessions of the Five (5) Gang Leaders and some of the other 17 suspects arrested for direct involvement and active participation in the Offa Bank Robbery and the gruesome killing of 33 innocent persons which includes some pregnant women and nine Police personnel,” the police statement read in part.

Despite the allegation, the Senate President has denied having any connection with the robbery.

In a statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki described the allegations as “baseless” and “another ploy by the Police to implicate him by all means”.

According to him, when the incident happened, he was the first top public official to pay a visit to the place after which he also put a call through to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, to make the necessary security arrangements.

He said, “Let it be known that there is no way I could have been associated with armed robbery against my people. When the Offa robbery incident happened, I was the first top public official to pay a visit to the place and right there in the palace of the traditional ruler, I put a call through to this same Mr Ibrahim Idris, the IGP, requesting him to make certain specific security arrangements as demanded by the people.

“Members of the public will remember that on May 16, 2018, I alerted the Senate about the information passed on to me by my State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatai Ahmed, over a plot by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to frame me up by getting some suspected cultists arrested in Ilorin to implicate me.

“It is believed that the timely leakage of the plot, in that case, aborted the use of the suspected cultists to implicate me. Now, it is the Offa bank robbery suspects that are about to be used”.

Speaking further, Saraki said the development was part of plans to embarrass him after the IGP had failed to honour invitations by the National Assembly over the killings across the country.

He, however, insisted that he had no hand in the case but will honour the police invitation when it is formally extended to him.

The New PDP has withdrawn from its scheduled talks with the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, today.

Leaders of the group attributions the decision to, among other things, the treatment of the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives by security agencies.

The group is also accusing the presidency of lack of interest in the talks, claiming negotiations may have been done in bad faith.

According to a statement signed by the spokesperson of the New PDP, Mr Abubakar Baraje, there have been ongoing talks between the New PDP, the APC and the Presidency in recent days.

He, however, accused the Presidency of misrepresenting what transpired at last week’s meeting by trying to blackmail some of the principal actors in a national daily.

“The persecution of our members using state security apparatus has continued unabated,” the statement read in part.

“We recognise the powers of the Police to conduct criminal investigations, but by rushing to the public with the issue even when they have unfettered access to the leadership of the National Assembly suggests an attempt to undermine, caricature and humiliate the institution of the legislature.”

According to the New PDP, the alleged attempt by the police to rope the Senate President into the Offa bank robbery and the Department of State Security’s withdrawal of half of speaker Yakubu Dogara’s security detail are enough incentive to pull out of the talks.

The nPDP leadership says it will brief its members and get a fresh mandate if good faith returns to the discussions.

The National Assembly is keeping the details of the 2018 budget top secret, despite jacking it up by more than 10 per cent.
The Daily Trust reported that the NASS increased its spending from N125 to N139.5 billion, but did not give a breakdown of what items made up the single line item.
Last year, following pressure from various stakeholders, the leadership of the National Assembly released its budget details, a development that gave the public the opportunity to scrutinise the allocations.
In the budget that has been transmitted to President Muhammad Buhari for assent, the lawmakers allocated N139.5bn to themselves as a line item under statutory transfers.
Daily Trust reports that 18 days after the 2018 budget was passed, the National Assembly has not revealed the details, unlike what obtained last year when the details were released same day the national budget was passed.
In a phone interview, a lawmaker said aside the details of the 2018 budget, the implementation of 2017 budget should be looked into.
“The issue is not only about the details, the focus should be how that of last year was spent. Even if it is in a closed session, it should be discussed. It is only when this is done that we can be talking of transparency,” he said.
He said if the expenditure of MDAs were scrutinised during budget defence, similar process should be done to the National Assembly budget for transparency.
Efforts to get the reaction of the spokesperson of the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC,Niger) yielded no result as he neither picked his call, nor reply the text message sent to him.
House spokesman, Abdulrazak Namdas (APC, Adamawa) when contacted said the budget details would be made available in due course.
“We’ll make it available with time, but for now, we don’t have the details handy,” he said. LR News

The Federal Government will today begin the implementation of the new excise duties for alcohol and tobacco.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in March assented to an increase in excise duties for tobacco, beer, wine, and spirits imported permitting a grace period of 90 days for implementation.

This follows after the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun wrote to President Buhari to seek approval of the excise review.

The Minister stated that Adeosun noted that the reviews would be from 2018 to 2020 in order to reduce an expected negative impact on the sector.

According to her, the health hazards associated with tobacco-related diseases and alcohol abuse will be reduced.

“The Tariff Technical Committee (TTC) recommended the slight adjustment in the excise duty charges after cautious considerations of the government’s fiscal policy measures for 2018 and the reports of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund Technical Assistance Mission on Nigeria’s fiscal policy.

“The effect of the excise duty rates adjustment on trade and investment was also assessed by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment and it adopted the recommendations of the TTC.

“Peer country comparisons were also carried out showing Nigeria as being behind the curve in the review of excise duty rates on alcoholic beverages and tobacco.”

The upward review of the rates was carried out in line with new ECOWAS standards and is expected to boost the government’s revenue and discourage abuse of the items. LR News

Police authorities in Lagos State have concluded plans to commence massive arrest of unlawful commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders in the state.

The State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said the arrests will commence from June 15 warning that the police would not only arrest unruly commercial motorcyclists but ensure that they face the full wrath of the law.

This is in view of the incident which occurred on May 30, where some commercial motorcyclists, attempted to burn Ibeshe Police Post but ended up burning a police patrol vehicle stationed at a black spot in the town.

The Police had earlier briefed commercial motorcyclists about this new enforcement, in a meeting.

The Police spokesperson in the state, Chike Oti, on Sunday said the meeting was attended by Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos state (MOALS), Nagari Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NAMORA) and Okada Riders Welfare Association (ORWA).

During the meeting, the CP decried the attitude of some commercial motorcyclists who attacked members of the public or constituted authorities at the slightest disagreement.

Five resolutions were reached at the end of the meeting which would take effect from Friday, June 15.

“From June 15, any motorcycle without licence plate number will be impounded. All commercial motorcycle operators are restricted from plying the highways and the bridges.

“Every commercial motorcycle operator must register with any of the approved unions for accountability and easy identification.

“Every commercial motorcycle operator must wear an apron which must indicate the union he belongs and bear boldly, his identification number,” Oti listed the resolutions.

A joint task force, comprising the police, the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and members of the motorcycle unions has also been set up to oversee the implementation of the resolution reached and the enforcement of the Lagos State traffic laws.

Former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu had $11,000 (9,300 euros) stolen from his suitcase at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport while he was on his way to playing in a friendly match organised by FIFA.

Kanu, 41, who captained the Nigerian national team and played for Arsenal and Inter Milan, was robbed as he transferred to a flight to Kaliningrad at the airport after arriving from London, TASS, the state news agency reported on Sunday.

TASS quoted Russian police as saying that they detained two baggage handlers who were unloading luggage from the London flight and stole the money from checked-in luggage.

“The stolen money has been confiscated and will shortly be returned to its owner,” police spokeswoman Irina Volk said.

Police confirmed to TASS that the luggage belonged to Kanu.

Moscow and Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave, will both host World Cup matches in a tournament that will see thousands of international fans travelling between the 11 host cities. Starting Monday, fans with tickets can travel to Russia visa-free. The first teams will also arrive in Russia this week.

Kanu played in Kaliningrad in a special “Relive the Legends” friendly match on Sunday as part of a team of FIFA Legends against a team of Russian veterans. Kanu’s team won 6-4.

Sheremetyevo saw a similar crime in March when a baggage handler was arrested and admitted to stealing 56,000 euros from a package belonging to a Moscow bank.

Jordan’s Prime Minister Hani Mulki

Jordan’s Prime Minister Hani Mulki  has submitted his resignation to King Abdullah on Monday, an official source said.
This is to soothe widespread anger over economic policies that have sparked the largest protests in several years and dozens of arrests.
Thousands of Jordanians took to the streets of the capital Amman and main provincial towns again on Sunday, extending days of protests that have shaken Jordan, a staunch U.S. ally that has remained stable through years of turmoil in the region.
Police chief Major General Fadel al-Hamoud said security forces had detained 60 people for breaking the law during the protests and 42 security force members had been injured, but protests remained under control.
“Rest assured, Jordan is a safe and secure country, and things are under control,” said Major General Hussein Hawatmeh, head of the Gendarmerie security department, appearing along with Hamoud at a news conference.
Public anger has grown over government policies since a steep general sales tax hike earlier this year and the abolition of bread subsidies, both measures driven by the International Monetary Fund.
Political sources earlier said Abdullah had summoned Mulki for an audience in the king’s palace.
In a sign the tax hikes could be shelved, the Petra news agency, citing the speaker of parliament, said lawmakers were on course to ask the king’s permission to hold an exceptional session, with a majority demanding the changes be withdrawn.
