A commissioner and a local government chairman taken away from the centre are still in police custody

The Kano state police command has denied arresting the deputy governor of the state, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, for allegedly attempting to disrupt election results collation on Monday, March 11.

Although there were videos of him being whisked away from a collation centre by the police and another of him arguing at a police station, the police said the deputy governor was rescued from the collation centre and not arrested as being reported in the media.

Police spokesperson in the state, Abdullahi Haruna, said the deputy governor was at the collation centre to observe the process but was not involved in the alleged result sheets snatching.

However, the commissioner and the local government chief both of whom were chieftains of the APC were still in detention as investigation into the alleged electoral offence commenced, Daily Trust reports.

The two were taken away from the collation centre along with the deputy governor.

Haruna said the two were arrested around 1am Monday morning, after allegedly storming the Nassarawa Collation Centre while collation of results for the governorship election was going on, thereby causing commotion that halted the process.

He said: “They were alleged to have penetrated the collation centre and attempted to destroy the election results sheets. While his Excellency, the deputy governor of Kano state, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna was rescued from the scene."
