But for the sound Intellect Quotient (IQ) of a female lecturer, two marauders young enough to be her students would have brought her on her knees and ultimately dispossessed her of her valuables.

However, she must have been brought to reckon with the reality of one of the numerous tactics of men of the underworld.

The lecturer, Mrs. Busola Oke Salako, was said to be in her residence in the Iyana-Iyesi area of Otta in Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria when her generating set suddenly went off at about 11:00pm on Friday, November 30, 2018.

Thinking it was a minor fault her housemaid could easily manage, she sent the maid to go and fix it, unknown to the mistress and maid that it was the handiwork of suspected armed robbers, who used it as a gimmick to infiltrate them.

According to the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a press statement made available to Crimepuzzle, "Immediately the girl opened the door, the two marauders held her and covered her mouth with cloth, threatening to kill her if she makes noise.

"Her initial screaming when she ran into armed bandits, suggested to the madam that the household was under the siege of bad boys, propelling her to apply wisdom by quickly bolting the door from the back before making a distress call to the police and some members of the Community.

"On receiving the call, the DPO Onipanu Division, SP Sangobiyi Johnson, quickly mobilized his Anti-Robbery men to the scene where the two suspects, Akindele Ramon, 22 and Paul King, 20 were promptly arrested with the help of members of the community", the PPRO stated.

The police image maker further said that in the course of interrogation, Akindele Ramon revealed that Paul King, who resided within the neighborhood, gave out information about the victim to the gang, comprising him (Ramon) and one Rapheal Solarin, now at large.

President Buhari delivers his address at COP 24 summit in Katowice Poland

President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday in Katowice, Poland, said no country can confront climate change alone, urging UN-member countries to rededicate themselves to the task of rebuilding and restoring a healthy environment for future generations.
In an address to the opening session of United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24), President Buhari warned that the challenges of climate change, including rising temperatures, desertification, floods, low agricultural yields and drying up of water bodies, are enormous and evident to all.
Citing the receding Lake Chad, the President noted that the effects of climate change are felt more on the vulnerable communities who lacked the capacity and technology to properly address such challenges.
‘‘Obviously, no country can confront the phenomenon alone. In this regard, Nigeria believes in joint and cooperative efforts to tackle the problem.
We urge that efforts to address the challenges of climate change be pursued within multilateral frameworks. Concerted efforts should be made to strengthen sub-regional and regional organizations, to serve as hubs for Climate Action and partnership,’’ the Nigerian leader said at the International Conference Centre, Katowice.
Speaking specifically on Lake Chad, the President reaffirmed that Nigeria remains committed to saving the Lake, which is a source of livelihood to 40 million people, from extinction.
He said Nigeria would build on the success of an International Conference held earlier in February this year in Abuja to create additional awareness globally on the serious environmental and security challenges facing the Lake Chad region.
The President told COP 24 Summit, attended by world leaders and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, that a consensus was reached at the Abuja Conference that an inter-basin water transfer from the Congo Basin remains the most sustainable option available to resuscitate and safeguard this precious water body that was once the 6th largest fresh water Lake in the world.
On behalf of the Member Countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, the President thanked the Italian Government for donating 1.5 million Euros towards completion of the feasibility studies on the proposed inter-basin water transfer project.
‘‘I once again call on the international community to support this worthy project, for the benefit of nearly 40 million people that depend on the Lake for their livelihood, and to guarantee future security of the region.
‘‘I would like to reiterate Nigeria’s commitment to constructively supporting multilateral action aimed at addressing climate change.
‘‘We must rededicate ourselves to the task of rebuilding and restoring the healthy environment we inherited for future generations,’’ he said.
President Buhari also used the occasion to highlight what Nigeria had done and is doing on climate change after the adoption of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2015.
‘‘We in Nigeria have commenced the implementation of our Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
‘‘In the next 15 years, we aim to achieve 20% emissions reduction below Business as Usual (BAU) and 45% emissions reduction with the support of our international partners by 2030.
‘‘Our efforts include the review and introduction of new responsive Legislation/policies, strengthening institutional and manpower capacities, and encouraging gradual transition to low carbon economy.
‘‘Nigeria has also recently ratified the Doha Amendment and will soon deposit the instrument for ratification,’’ he said.
The President pledged that Nigeria will continue to pursue industrialization and economic development, with sound environmental management and best practices.
He added that Nigeria has unlocked the potential of its sovereign green bond to galvanize private capital to finance environmentally sustainable projects.
‘‘In support of our NDC aspiration, we have embraced the issuance of green bond as an innovative and alternative source of funding projects that would reduce emissions and provide robust climate infrastructure like renewable energy, low carbon transport, water infrastructure and sustainable agriculture that our country needs,’’ he said.
Furthermore, the President told the summit Nigeria believes that technology can be a powerful solution for simultaneously addressing climate change and advancing development, stressing the need for developed countries to accelerate the finance for research and development, in addition to promoting access to climate-friendly technologies.
‘‘In addition, there is the need to raise global climate action in the pre-2020 period, in terms of mitigation, adaptation and means of implementation.
‘‘For us in Nigeria, we are promoting technologies and practices such as sustainable land management, climate resilient agriculture, water efficiency and clean energy.
‘‘We have also developed insurance-based initiatives to deal with loss and damage, as well as adaptation to internally acceptable practices,’’ he said.
The President commended the Government and People of Poland for hosting the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the ‘‘beautiful city of Katowice.’’
At the formal opening of COP24, President Andrzej Duda of Poland had told delegates that the conference is taking place on the exact location where a coal mine was once operated, adding that Katowice is now one of the greenest cities in Poland.

Four persons, who allegedly exhumed the corpse of their landlord before selling his property, on Monday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The three accused men and a woman are Silifatu Abisile, 60; Jimoh Abisile, 52; Gbade Bakare, 56; and Isaiah Bakare, 45.
The accused are facing a-five-count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping, breach of peace, forgery and false assumption of authority.
The Police Prosecutor, Williams Ologun, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 1, at Ishola Daniel Street in Oshodi area of Lagos.
Ologun alleged that the accused had conspired to illegally sell the house they were living, which did not belong to them.
He said that a prospective buyer had insisted they relocated the grave that was in front of the house before he would make payments.
“My Lord, they forged an exhumation of corpse permit from Oshodi -Isolo Local Government and dug up the corpse of the house owner, Sumonu Bakare, who was buried in the compound.
“They also kidnapped the son of the deceased; Gbenro Bakare, who is crippled, thinking he was the only surviving child of the deceased,” he said.
Ologun said that the first and second accused were relations of the deceased while the third and fourth accused were long time tenants on the property.
He said that the third and fourth accused had registered for change of name to ‘Bakare’, which was not their real names, claiming to be the children of the deceased.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offences contravened Sections 76 (1) [c],  168 (1) (d), 271 (1), 365 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Peter Ojo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
In his ruling, Ojo insisted that one of each accused sureties must be a blood relation and must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
He said each of the sureties must also show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos Government and be gainfully employed.
Ojo adjourned the case until Jan. 10 for trial.

An FCT High Court, Apo on Monday, granted the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) leave to arraign former petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and a former Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling company, Olajide Omokore, on Feb. 25.
Alison-Madueke and Omokore, are to be arraigned on five counts bordering on conspiracy and illegal act of accepting and giving gratifications.
Trial judge, Justice Valentine Ashi, granted the EFCC leave, after the prosecution counsel, Mr Faruk Abdullahi  told the court that while investigations were on going,  the former minister left the country and is currently in the UK.
Justice Ashi, also ordered the EFCC to put its house in order.
He alleged that AlisonMadueke, refused to honour an invitation by the EFCC to appear at the commission.
The suspects, are to be arraigned for allegedly accepting and giving  gift  of   properties described as penthouse 22,Block B, Admiralty Estate, Ikoyi, and penthouse 21, building 5, block C, Banana Island, Lagos.
The EFCC said the alleged offence,  contravened the provisions of Sections 26(1) and 17 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences  Act, 2000.
The prosecutor, Mr Faruk Abdullahi  told the court that while investigations were on going,  the former minister left the country and is currently in the United Kingdom.
He  also said that on invitation by the EFCC Mrs  Madueke refused to honour the invitation but all process are set in place to ensure she comes back to face trial.
The counsel for the second defendant, Tayo Adeniyo SAN, told the court that his client was not served with the charges and his client was read to clear his name.
NAN reports that on Nov. 11, the EFCC confirmed that the process to bring back a former Minister of Petroleum, Alison-Madueke, from the United Kingdom has begun.
Acting spokesman of the Commission, Mr Tony Orilade, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
According to Orilade, EFCC’s Operations Department had made presentation to the Legal Department to commence the process, noting that the process has commenced.
He, however, said that the action had to be processed through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, explaining that it was not something the Commission could commence and conclude on its own.
“It is ongoing. Within the next few weeks, the extent to which we have gone will be made known to the public.
“It is not a fresh case; it is not a fresh petition that is just being looked into; the whole process is a total package.
“This request to have Mrs Alison-Madueke repatriated to Nigeria is just an aspect of Diezani’s investigation and commencement of trial,” he said.
In 2017, a Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the final forfeiture of N7.6bn alleged loot recovered from the former minister to the Federal Government.
Justice Abdulazeez Anka granted an application by the EFCC seeking the final forfeiture of the money to the government.
Granting the application, the judge had said: “I have read the motion on notice seeking the final forfeiture of the sum of N7.6bn reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity.
“I have also gone through the affidavit in support of the application.
“In the circumstances, I am of the view that the application has merit and is hereby granted as prayed. Parties have a right of appeal.”
In October, 2017, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had said that Nigeria had no immediate plan to bring Alison-Madueke back home to face trial.
Alison-Madueke, who is being investigated in the UK, had urged the Federal Government to have her repatriated to Nigeria to face corruption charges against her.  (NAN).

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba

The Nigeria Labour Congress has described the Federal Government’s silence on the N30,000 minimum wage proposal as provocative stressing that it expected President Muhammadu Buhari to have sent a draft bill to the National Assembly weeks after report on the minimum wage was submitted to him.
Organised labour said it would not wait till eternity for the government on the issue.
In an interview with the Punch Newspapers, the General Secretary of the NLC, Mr Peter Ozo-Eson, said members of the union were becoming restless with the way the government had handled the issue.
He said that unless government acted fast, the union might meet again to review government’s position and take necessary action to press home its demand.
But he did not say when the leadership of the union would likely meet.
Ozo-Eson said, “The latest about the issue of the minimum wage is clear. We expect that since the Presidency had already received our report, the President should have drafted an executive bill to the National Assembly on it so that they can begin to legislate on it.
“That has not been done even though we expect that it should have been done already. We cannot continue to wait forever.
“The next step as I said is for the President to transmit a draft bill to the National Assembly. The Federal government’s delay on the issue is provocative, our members are becoming restless and the federal Government must act fast on our report.
“If the delay continues, our next step will be made public after we meet again to review the steps taken so far.”
