The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has reacted to the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary which took place on May 12, 2018.

In a tweet on Saturday, he challenged the Former state governor, Kayode Fayemi, who emerged as the winner, saying that he should “expect to suffer worse defeat compared to that of 2014” when they were running mates for the state’s governorship seat.

He also expressed joy that the APC chose a candidate whom he believes the Ekiti people would gladly vote against.

The Governor wrote: “I thank the APC for giving Ekiti people a candidate they love to vote against at all times.

“Fayemi should not celebrate this pyrrhic victory yet because it is nothing but a flame that will be quenched on July 14.”

Fayemi, who is the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, was announced as the winner of the primary by the Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, Mr Tanko Al-Makura, after he polled a total of 941 votes, to defeat former Governor Segun Oni and 31 other aspirants.

With his victory, he will be going up against the incumbent Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Mr Kolapo Olusola, of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Mr Akinloye Oladele Aiyegbusi of the Social Democratic Party.

Mr Olusola has since been endorsed by Governor Fayose who denied Fayemi a second term as governor in 2014 and the two have been in a running battle since then.

In 2017, Fayemi accused the Governor of pursuing a vendetta against him, after he set up a commission of inquiry to probe the finances of the state during his (Fayemi’s) administration (from 2010 to 2014).

He, therefore, asked Fayose to focus on governing the state rather than probing him.

He noted that the decision to go ahead with the inauguration of the panel was presumptuous and ill-advised.

The governor, however, went ahead to inaugurate the eight-man commission of inquiry in compliance with the resolution passed by the State House of Assembly on May 10, 2017.

The Assembly subsequently passed the resolution after it accused Dr. Fayemi of failing to honour series of invitations sent to him to appear before the lawmakers.

The lawmakers accused Fayemi of disregarding the state House of Assembly and denying them the chance to get answers to questions about some financial decisions by his administration.

Subsequently, he sought the intervention of the Ado-Ekiti High Court to stop the Ekiti State government from probing him. LR News

He said the agency had received enough Oral Polio Vaccines (OPVs) from the Federal Government for the smooth conduct of the exercise.
The executive secretary said all necessary arrangements had been concluded for smooth conduct of the exercise.
Ibrahim sought the support and cooperation of traditional and religious leaders as well as other stakeholders’ towards the successful conduct of the exercise.
He urged parents to present their children for the immunisation at designated centres in their respective communities for the exercise.
He commended the traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders for their cooperation in ensuring the smooth conduct of the immunisation.
The executive secretary, who expressed satisfaction at the level of compliance by parents, also appealed to them to cooperate with immunisation officials for a hitch-free exercise.
“I personally inspected the exercise in many centres and I was impressed with the level of turnout of children.
“So far, the exercise is going on smoothly across the state.
“We thanked all stakeholders for the successes recorded in the exercise so far,’’ Ibrahim said. LR News

A worker puts on the sign at US Embassy in Jerusalem

Despite opposition and complaints by the Arab World, the United States will open its embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, 14 May.
The Office of the spokesperson for the Department of State said it was proud to announce the dedication and that  Amb. David Friedman would preside over the dedication ceremony.
It added that Deputy Secretary John Sullivan would lead the presidential delegation to the historic opening along with Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin.
Other members of the presidential delegation are Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, Adviser Ivanka Trump, and Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt.
“As the President stated on December 6, 2017, the historic opening of our embassy recognizes the reality that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and the seat of its government.
“Seventy years ago, the United States, under President Harry S. Truman, became the first nation to recognize the State of Israel.
“Moving our Embassy is not a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace deal; rather it is a necessary condition for it.
“We are not taking a position on final status issues, including the specific boundaries of Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem, nor on the resolution of contested borders,” the department said.
It added that Consulate General Jerusalem would continue to operate as an independent mission with an unchanged mandate responsible for U.S. relations with the Palestinians and the Palestinian Authority.
The department said: “The United States continues to support the status quo with regard to the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount.
“The Administration is firmly committed to pursuing a lasting and comprehensive peace between Israel and the Palestinians that promises a brighter future for both”.
While in Jerusalem as the Head of Delegation, Sullivan would also meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Hotovely, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director General Yuval Rotem, and members of both U.S. Embassy and Consulate General staff.
The Department would livestream the Dedication Ceremony on www.state.govand Facebook.com/usdos, it said. LR News
