The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday said it had promoted 1,731 teachers out of the 2,200 that wrote the 2016/2017 promotional examination across the federation.

Ajao Emmanuel, the Deputy Director, Human Resources, Force Education Headquarters, Abuja, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria during the presentation of letters of promotion to beneficiaries in the Lagos Zone.

NAN reports that 241 out of the 1,731 teachers from across the country that benefitted from the promotion and were from Lagos Zone comprising schools from Ibadan and Abeokuta.

Emmanuel said the cut-off mark for the examination which held in November 2016 in Abuja was 60 per cent.
He said that not all members of staff who were not promoted failed the examination.

He stated that some were not promoted because there was no vacancy to accommodate them in the next cadre.
Emmanuel said: “So many factors are usually considered in promotion in the Federal Civil Service and most important are the vacancies available.

“So, it is possible for somebody to pass an examination and the vacancy will not cover him or her.
“For example, 60 per cent was the cut-off mark; someone who scored 70 per cent might have not been promoted because there was no vacancy to accommodate him or her.

“I am trying to explain that for a particular cadre, there may be 20 vacancies and it is possible for 28 candidates to pass the examination.
“All they do is to take the highest scorers from 1 to 20 and the remaining eight will have to repeat the examination next time.”

Emmanuel said while so many things were considered in creating vacancies, it is not created by the Police Education Unit but by the Federal Civil Service.

He said that the Police Education Unit had appealed to the Ministry of Interior and the Head of Service to create more vacancies to enable more teachers to be promoted.

The Deputy Director said regular promotion was important to motivate the teachers to put in their best to their jobs, which would in turn produce excellent students.

He explained: “The aspiration of a worker in any job at all is to continue rising to the top and then retire with joy; so promotion makes a worker fulfilled and gives him or her feelings that his or employer cares.”

Emmanuel, however, advised the promoted candidates to justify the promotion by not resting on their oars on their jobs but to soar higher.

A beneficiary, Felicia Ejeanyido, of the Police Children School, Idimu, expressed joy for being promoted and lauded the authorities for the effort while promising to put in more efforts in her job.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba

The Nigeria Labour Congress says it has submitted the names of its nominees for the 29 man-committee for the negotiation of the new National Minimum Wage.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja.

It would be recalled that the Federal Executive Council had on May 25 approved the constitution of the National Minimum Wage Committee to kick-start the process of negotiations for new wage for workers.

Wabba said: “Well the point we are now is that last week we received a letter that organised labour should actually forward the names of their nominees and you know we have eight and that we have done and dispatched.

“And what we expect now is the formal inauguration of the committee and the unveiling of the Chairperson and then the process should start in earnest with a timeline.

“That is what we expect but I think we have fulfilled all righteousness by making sure that we are able to submit our team.”

Wabba said that organised labour was aware of the situation of the workers and pensioners in the country, adding that labour would ensure that workers earn a living wage and pensions.

Wabba, however, called on all strata of government, including the private sector to be proactive in order for organised labour and workers not to be pushed to the wall.

He said: “That is the position we are, but I think the fact of the matter is well known due to the issue of inflation and the high cost of living.

“This is obvious and it is also about respecting our laws and tradition. If it is said that within a circle of five years, the law must be reviewed, certainly we must find a way of doing it right.

“I think the bottom line is, none of the parties have said that those facts we have laid are not logical and nobody has said that the minimum wage will not be reviewed.”

IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu has accused President Buhari of being a dictator. The IPOB leader said people must be allowed to provide their views.

He rejected the comparison of IPOB with Boko Haram Nnamdi Kanu who is the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for allegedly comparing the group to Boko Haram.

Kanu spoke in Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia where he was responding to the call by the president to security operatives to clamp down on Boko Haram and secessionist groups.

He said the people must not be “railroaded into succumbing to intimidation”, insisting that use of force would not solve the country’s problem.

Nnamdi Kanu said Buhari should know that there are better ways to handle issues that concern the growth and development of the country instead of resorting to threat or intimidation of the citizenry into believing in his course.

Kanu said: “In this debate for freedom, everybody has to be heard.
Buhari should defeat me with the superiority of his argument not AK 47.

“Some people quickly recourse to violence, hate and intimidation because they have lost the force of argument.

“It is the continuation of Buhari’s dictatorial and unwholesomely undemocratic approach to governance.

“I find it unacceptable and insulting that somebody elected by the people can turn around and dictate to them how he wants them to behave.”

Mean while Kanu said that he set up the Biafra security Service so as to provide security for igbo people.

IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu

The Indigenous People of Biafra will never resort to armed conflict or rebellion, notwithstanding the killings, arrest and arbitrary detention of its members, says its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu said this in an interview with newsmen at his Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia, Abia State country home on Wednesday, while reacting to President Muhammadu Buhari’s national broadcast on Monday.

He, however, said the group had formed a security outfit, Biafra Security Service, to checkmate the activities of suspected herdsmen in the South East.

He said: “IPOB is a peaceful mass movement.
“It is non-violent and our people carry no arms.
“So, it is wrong for anybody to compare the group with a terrorist group such as Boko Haram.’

“There is no record of where people fought or engaged in open altercation in any of IPOB gatherings.
“We are the most disciplined, well-behaved mass movement anywhere on the face of the planet.”

Kanu, therefore, implored Buhari to adopt a peaceful approach and dialogue rather than threat in dealing with separatist groups in the country.

Kanu said it would be counter-productive for security agencies to apply the same measure used against Boko Haram insurgents on IPOB.

According to him, the plan to use brute force rather than dialogue to deal with Biafran agitators will not work.
He said: “In this debate for freedom, everybody has to be heard.”

Kanu expressed dissatisfaction with the comparison of IPOB to Boko haram, which he described as an “internationally recognized terrorist organisation”.

“It is well-known that IPOB has remained a peaceful, non-violent organisation since its formation,” Kanu said.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has called on the Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, to desist from cheap blackmail in the handling of the ongoing strike called by the union.

The President of the union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a bulletin on the strike, asked members of the union to disregard the comment by the minister that the strike was illegal.

He said: “Our national struggle to revitalise the Nigerian university system is comprehensive and total. Remain resolute and steadfast as victory is certain.”

Also, the ASUU Chairman at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Deji Omole, who condemned the tactics employed by the Federal Government over the demands of the union, said it was deceitful for the minister to insinuate that the N23 billion earned allowances, which the Federal Government promised to pay soon, were only for lecturers.

Omole said the earned allowances were for both deserving academic and non-academic staff, stressing that it was too early for Ngige to embark on blackmail.

Omole said the union was more interested in enduring legacies to reposition public education in the country through adequate funding of public education, which the present government had failed to prioritise.
