Yeni said at a press briefing on Wednesday at the Kalakuta Museum in Lagos that the guests were expected from all over the world.
Yeni Kuti, daughter of the late legendary musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, says no fewer than 250,000 guests will grace this year’s Felabration festival.
Yeni said at a press briefing on Wednesday at the Kalakuta Museum in Lagos that the guests were expected from all over the world.
The briefing took place on a day that marked the 20th anniversary of the death of the late Afro-beat maestro on August 2, 1997.

Felabration is an annual music festival conceived in 1998 by Yeni in memory and celebration of her father.
It incorporates musical performances, Fela Debates, Symposium, Secondary Schools Debate and the Felabration Carnival.
Yeni said: “All is now set for the 2017 edition of Felabration, the annual festival to commemorate the life of activist and Afrobeat founder, Fela Kuti.
“Presently, we are expecting no less than 250,000 guests all over the world.”
Yeni said the festival proper would run for one week, beginning from October 9 till 15, which is Fela’s birthday.

According to her, Fela turned some social, economic and political ills, which affected Nigeria and Africa, into chart-busting songs, which many listeners deemed prophetic.
She said already, an art and painting competition was flagged off on April 1 and participants had until June 30, 2017 to submit their works.
According to her, the works will be evaluated by members of the Felabration Organising Committee to pick the top three winners who will be announced before July 31.

The Head, Organising Committee of the event, Theo Lawson, said this year marks the 20th anniversary of Fela’s death in 1997, and the central theme around the celebration is ‘The Prophesy’.
Lawson said the theme song would be “Pansa Pansa”, the title of one of Fela’s songs, which literally means “you ain’t heard nothing yet”.
He said stated that the winning works wiould be exhibited on the Felabration website, www.felabration.net, New Afrika Shrine and Kalakuta Museum.
According to him, a new addition to the celebration, different from that of the previous years, is a tour package to walk tourists through major landmarks in Fela’s life.

Lawson said: “The tour will take tourists from Abeokuta, the birth/childhood place of Fela, to Lagos where he lived and died.
“Tourists will also visit the house he was born in, his childhood neighbourhood and the schools he attended while growing up.
“They will also visit his first home in Lagos, his first ever club of performance, Afro-Spot, Old Shrine, site of old and first Kalakuta Republic, among other places of interest.

“Most of the musical performances from various artistes will still take place at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, Lagos, Freedom Park on Broad Street, Lagos Island will also play a big role in the musical aspects of Felabration.”
Fela was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, composer, pioneer of the Afro-beat music genre, human rights activist, Pan-Africanist, polygamist, mystic, legend and political maverick.

He was born on October 13, 1938 in Abeokuta into an upper-middle class family.
His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a woman activist, and his father, the Rev. Isreal Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was an Anglican minister and school principal.
Fela was a cousin of Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka.
He attended Abeokuta Grammar School and later went to London in 1958 to study medicine but instead studied music at Trinity College of Music.
Fela played musical instruments, such as saxophone, keyboard, trumpet, guitar and drum.

He married his first wife, Remilekun Taylor, in 1960 and in 1963, he moved back to Nigeria, re-formed Koola Lobitos and trained as a radio producer for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation.
Because of his social activism, he ran into trouble on many occasions with the military regimes in Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s and was jailed.
Fela’s elder brother, Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, a former Minister of Health, announced his death from complications related to HIV and AIDS on August 2, 1997.

                                Nollywood Actor, Segun Arinze
Fela’s elder brother, Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, a former Minister of Health, announced his death from complications related to HIV and AIDS on August 2, 1997.
Popular Nollywood actor and TV personality, Segun Arinze, popularly known as Black Arrow, says Afro-beat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, is still relevant 20 years after his death.
Fela’s elder brother, Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, a former Minister of Health, announced his death from complications related to HIV and AIDS on August 2, 1997.

Arinze said in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday that the issues Fela addressed in his works were still relevant.
He said: “He is a great icon and till date, his music still stands relevant. Most of those things he said in all his songs are prevalent till date.
“He was like a prophet but as the saying goes, a ‘prophet is not respected in his home town’, which is exactly what played out in his life.
                                               FELA ANIKULAPO
“We still keep hope that the society will continue to imbibe the messages he left behind for the much needed change to come.”
Arinze described Fela as a great artiste, who understood how to use music to pass on messages.
He said Fela started passing messages before other activists started using music to propagate worthy and good causes.

Arinze said: “And of course, he was being recognised by the government, people and the society; Fela was great, we can never forget him in Nigeria, Africa and the world stage.
“It even got to a level of staging a play in his honour, Fela on Broad Way; what else can you ask for?”
Arinze said Fela’s works encouraged other musicians in Nigeria to pass positive messages through music.
He said musicians should learn, live and share experiences with people in their works.

Fela was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, composer, pioneer of the Afro-beat music genre, human rights activist, Pan-Africanist, polygamist, mystic, legend and political maverick.
He was born on October 13, 1938 in Abeokuta, Ogun State into an upper-middle class family.
His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a woman activist and his father, the Rev. Isreal Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was an Anglican minister and school principal.

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo & Nnamdi Kanu
IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu has tackled Acting President Yemi Osinbajo over comments on Biafra. Osinbajo had said before the Igbo Council of Traditional Rulers that Biafran agitation is unconstitutional.
But Kanu said Osinbajo’s comment on Biafra was faulty and misconceived.

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, on Wednesday August 2, tackled the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for declaring the Biafran agitation as unconstitutional.

Vanguard reports that Kanu, in a world press conference he held through his team of lawyers in Abuja, maintained that Osinbajo’s view about Biafra was “patently misconceived and inherently faulty”, despite his rank as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

NAIJ.com gathered that in a statement signed by his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu, insisted that “extra judicial remarks” Osinbajo made before the Igbo Council of Traditional Rulers, in reference to Biafran agitation, was offensive to section 2 of the 1999 constitution, as amended.

The statement read in part: “We are presently drifting into the narrative that had hitherto kept our client in unlawful incarceration for 18 months, in clear breach of positive orders of court that directed for his unconditional release.

“Unhealthy interference by the Executive Arm in the matter before the Court, vide pronouncements capable of putting fears in the court is a case in point.

“This is evident in the recent extra judicial remarks by the Acting President, clearly contained in his presentation before the Igbo Council of Traditional Rulers, that the agitation for Biafra is unconstitutional as it offends section 2 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, 2011, and consequent threat of arrest and imprisonment of those that exercise their unquestionable and inalienable rights to self-determination.

"This declaration is respectfully considered as not only provocative, and unacceptable, but a clear case of undue interference with judicial process, which have the capacity of distorting the mindset of the Judicial Officer seized of our client’s case. “It is important to remind the Acting President that our client’s present political trial originated from his legitimate exercise of his constitutionally guaranteed rights to self-determination as clearly provided for under extant laws, and international instruments/covenants.

"It is therefore reasonably expected that any of such extra judicial remarks, should not emanate from the revered office of the Acting President. “With due reverence to the Acting President, and his rank as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, we deem it obligatory to state the correct position of the law as it relates to his faulty position.

"We observed most respectfully that the learned silk made this remark in direct response to Quit Notice threats and ultimatum handed down to Igbos living in the Northern part of the counter, by a faceless and uninformed group, going by the name of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum. “But it must be noted very humbly that it is a mistake to equate the lawful and legitimate aspirations and agitations for Biafra with the lawful, illegal and illegitimate Quit Notice, and threat given to the Igbo People to leave the North by this group.

"We submit most humbly that the right to self-determination, recognizable under various instruments which Nigeria is a State Party is clearly provided for under Article 20(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) ( Act Cap 10) Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990.

“This law provides thus: Article 20 (1) ‘All Peoples shall have right to existence. They shall have the unquestionable and inalienable rights to self-determination. They shall freely determine their political status and shall pursue their economic and social development according to the policy they have freely chosen’.

“The above law has been in force in our jurisdiction since 1990 having been ratified vide Ratification and Enforcement Act, Laws of Federation. It is our respectful view that the declaration by the Acting President that Biafran agitation is unconstitutional, is with due respect patently misconceived and inherently faulty. “It is on this note that we most respectfully call on the Acting President to be more circumspect in his further remarks as it relates to a substantive charge before the court. There is need for total restraint, from comments, pronouncements and declarations that have the effect of distorting the pendulum, one way or the other, particularly on this phantom criminal charge”.

Besides, Ejiofor who briefed newsmen alongside counsel to Kanu’s co-defendants, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawuisi and Bright Chimezie, accused the federal government of deliberately stalling frustrating full-blown hearing on the treasonable felony charge against the defendants.

According to him, rather than to open its case on June 22, FG, served an amended five-count charge on the defendants, “in clear breach and violation of an order the court made on April 25, 2017, wherein his Lordship warned, that the court will not entertain further interlocutory application or process capable of delaying the trial”.

He alleged that FG joined the 5th defendant, Chimezie, in the case after a Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State had on May 24, not only ordered the Department of State Service to release him forthwith, but equally directed that he should be paid N5million as damages for his illegal detention. Consequently, Kanu and his co-defendants, demanded an immediate withdrawal of the amended five-count charge against them, saying they have not committed any offence that is known to law.
