Education Minister Adamu Adamu

The National Youths Caucus of All Progressive Congress (APC), Northwest Zone, on Friday in Kaduna canvassed for total ban on the operations of private schools in the country.
The caucus which held a rally in support of ongoing reforms in the education sector in Kaduna State said the measure was necessary to save public schools from total collapse.
Malam Isiyaku  Sarkin Pawa, Secretary of the caucus, said Nigeria must take steps to salvage the education sector from its present poor state in order to build a prosperous and stable nation.
“In the past, everyone attend public schools irrespective of their parents’ status in the society, but because of the establishment of private schools, all public schools have been neglected.’’
He added that public schools which used to be for all classes of people have now become only for the poor, thus encouraging segregation in access to educational opportunities between children of the rich and poor.
“Public schools performance is not too good, that is why we are supporting the governor’s reforms in the education sector,” the secretary added.
Jafaru Sani, the state Commissioner for Local government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who received the group on behalf of Gov. Nasiru El-Rufai, explained that the reform was not politically motivated but for the benefit of the future generation.
“The state government has done a lot towards improving the education sector, there is no going back on the disengagement of unqualified teachers, instead we will improve on the quality of teachers and education in general,” he said.
He assured that the government would continue to do the right thing in spite of the challenges being faced. LR News

A Phnom Penh court on Friday sentenced a woman to one year in jail for Facebook comments in which she accused Cambodian Prime Minster Hun Sen of masterminding the murder of government critic Kem Ley.
Hin Vansreypov was arrested in Banteay Meanchey province on July 10 after calling Hun Sen and his family “killers” in a social media post marking the first anniversary of Ley’s murder.
“Hun Sen’s family are the killers. Each family member has the blood of Kem Ley on their hands,’’ the 37-year-old wrote.
According to reports by the Khmer Times, presiding judge Y Thavireak sentenced her to one year in prison and ordered her to pay a 250 dollar fine.
Kem Ley, a political analyst and founder of the rural-based Grassroots Political Party, was shot dead at a Phnom Penh coffee shop in July 2016 over an alleged debt.
However, many Cambodians believe his killing was politically motivated.
The sentence came amid a flurry of lawsuits against regular Cambodians and politicians criticising Hun Sen on the social media platform.
On Thursday, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court began the defamation trial against former opposition leader in exile, Sam Rainsy, over comments he made in a Facebook post in December.
Hun urged soldiers not to follow orders from dictators when instructed to “shoot innocent people.’’

A Nigerian man, Chidimma Amedu has taken Facebook post to a whole new level when he posted an unusual advert on 30 December 2017 asking any woman interested in being his wife to reply.
He also said he was ready to tie the nuptials knots on 6 January, 2018.
“Am of age and I am ready to say I do and am wasting no time.
“Send in your applications – the most qualified will be married on January 6, 2018. Application closes 12 midnight, 31/12/2017,” Amedu posted.
He then followed up with subsequent posts.
“Am serious about this oh and don’t say you did not see it on time. Good luck.”
He received a couple of responses, but one from a certain Sophy Ijeoma was the one which caught his attention.
“Am interested, just DM me…lols,” her post read.
At first, she thought it was a joke and she simply replied to keep the thread flowing.
A direct message from him to her inbox, followed by a Facebook call, would change her life’s trajectory.
Chidimma placed the advert initially as a joke but became optimistic when Sophy said she was interested
Two days after their first conversation, he travelled some 500km (300 miles) from his home in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, to Enugu in the east where she lived.
She had been waiting for him outside a retail store and in true fairy-tale style, “it was love at first sight”, she recalled.
“He is the most handsome man I’ve ever met and I liked him instantly.”
After two hours of “awkward” conversation, he asked her to go to meet his uncle, who incidentally is also resident in Enugu.
Asked what was going through her mind at the time, she said she thought it was all a bit of a joke, but she was excited about it and thought Chidimma was quite an interesting character.
“We got to the uncle’s house and he said: ‘Uncle, meet the woman I want to marry.'”
Like Chidimma, his family don’t seem to hang about when it comes to getting things done, because the uncle gave his approval.
The couple had been friends on Facebook for over a year but had never spoken to each other before the advert
Getting family backing for your choice of spouse is an essential part of Igbo culture.
Whereas picking your future wife from dozens of respondents to a Facebook marriage advert and marrying her in six days is decidedly not.
At this point in their day-old relationship, it was beginning to dawn on Sophy that this fellow was not playing, but how do you commit to marrying someone you only just met?
She would not comment on whether they had even shared as much as a kiss at that point, but maintained she was captivated by how focused and determined her new fiancé was.
“When I saw him for the first time, I definitely found him attractive, but what I didn’t know was how serious he was about marrying me.
“It was after we met the uncle and his wife, that I realised that this could actually happen and I wanted it.”
The engagement
It was now her turn to worry about how she was going to get the approval of her family to marry a guy she had just met on Facebook.
But they had momentum going for them. Having met and fallen in love at first sight, or first message, if you like, and getting Chidimma’s uncle’s approval, the couple decided to complete the cycle by visiting Sophy’s family the same day.
Approval from the family is essential in Igbo tradition.
Sophy recounted how she relayed the information to her mother. Her dad had passed away, and her mum said she did not have the final word in terms of giving approval for her to be married, so it was up to Sophy’s elder brother to give his blessings.
It would appear the odds were firmly in their favour as Sophy’s brother gave his blessings too.
So after a few questions from her brother, it was official – Chidimma and Sophy were engaged to be married in six days.
Last year Chidimma was engaged to another woman and the wedding was scheduled for December, but the relationship fell apart in March leaving him dejected.
As December approached, the disappointment of not being able to fulfil his dream of getting married made him put up the post, he said.
The wedding was a blend of old and new
“I had the desire to get married, I had a date in mind, but no bride, so I decided to place an advert as a joke, but I was open and up for it.”
Asked whether she knew about his earlier engagement and her thoughts on how this seemingly rushed marriage might be seen as a rebound, Sophy dismissed any suggestions that her relationship was not well thought through.
“I don’t care about that – when you see what you want, you go for it.”
They had been friends on Facebook for more than a year, but had never met or spoken to each other until the advert.
“Am interested, just DM me…lols” was all it took for the union to be formed.
Sophy admitted her friends were sceptical about the whole thing, while some are still in disbelief, but as she said: “When you see the one, you will know he is the one”.
Happily ever after?
They got married on 6 January in a traditional Igbo ceremony, and posted photos of their wedding day on Facebook of course – to the amusement of the social media community.
Chidimma put up a post saying people may have thought he had been joking but he clearly wasn’t.
As can be expected, there were mixed reactions, but mainly a lot of support for the couple.
They hope to have a church wedding in April and perhaps a honeymoon somewhere nice, he said.

A Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, on Thursday sentenced a 31-year-old man, Ifeanyi Okorogu, to two years’ imprisonment with no option of fine for attempting to sell a three-day-old baby girl.

Okorogu, who was arrested in December 2017, was brought to the court by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons on two counts.

The charge sheet, with number FHC/CA/68C/2017, was signed by one Unimwen Aigbeze of NAPTIP, on behalf of the Minister of Justice.

NAPTIP accused Okorogu of “harbouring a 16-year-old girl, Omah Eko, in October 2017, who was then pregnant, by means of abuse of position of vulnerability giving to her benefits to achieve her consent for the purpose of exploitation, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 13(2) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.”

The agency also accused Okorogu of attempting to sell Eko’s three-day-old baby to one Angela Nwaelechi on December 1, 2017, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 29 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

Okorogu’s lawyer, Cosmos Obinna, before the judgement, urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

He said the accused was a first time offender with no criminal record, adding that he had an unemployed wife, two children and an aged mother who would suffer if he was incarcerated.

He said Okorogu had learnt from his mistakes and would not commit such crime again.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Inyang Ekwo sentenced Okorogu to two years on the first count and one year on the second with no option of fine.

He said both sentences should run concurrently starting from the day of his arrest.

All the jewels looted in a multi-million-euro robbery at the Ritz hotel in Paris have been recovered, a source close to the case said Thursday, as a police hunt for two of the robbers continued.
In the latest of a series of audacious heists in France, a gang armed with hatchets and handguns burst into the five-star hotel on the capital’s glitzy Place Vendome on Wednesday evening and smashed the display windows of jewellery shops on the ground floor.
The robbers, wearing balaclavas and gloves, entered through a rear staff entrance and swiped gems and watches worth over four million euros ($4.8 million).
But the plot began to unravel as soon as they attempted to make their getaway, with three men arrested when they came up against locked doors as they tried to flee out the back of the building.
Some of the loot was recovered after being dropped during those arrests, a source told AFP.
The rest of the jewels and watches were found in a bag dropped by one of the two robbers who got away, another source said.
Wednesday’s robbery took place 18 months after the Ritz’s palatial doors were re-opened to guests following nearly four years of renovations and a massive fire
The three arrested men, all around 30 years old, are from the Seine-Saint-Denis area north of Paris, and are “well known to the police for armed robbery, violent crime and receiving stolen goods”, a source close to the inquiry said. Police extended their custody for a further 24 hours on Thursday night.
The incident took place at about 6:30 pm (1730 GMT) as the streets of Paris were busy with people making their way home from work.
A police team in charge of patrolling the square — home to some of Paris’s top jewellers and watchmakers, as well as the justice ministry — was quickly on the scene.
Several luxury brands display their jewels in the storied Ritz, famous as the lodging of choice for Coco Chanel and Ernest Hemingway as well as Britain’s Princess Diana, who spent her final hours there before dying in a car crash in a Paris tunnel in 1997.
The hotel, opened in 1898, has been owned by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed since 1979.
Wednesday’s robbery took place 18 months after the Ritz’s palatial doors were re-opened to guests following nearly four years of renovations and a massive fire.
On finding their escape route blocked the thieves threw the loot out of a window to two accomplices waiting outside.
One of the two accomplices escaped in a car that was found abandoned north of Paris.
The other made a getaway on a motorbike, dropping a bag of jewels and knocking over a pedestrian while speeding the wrong way up a one-way street.
The hotel’s management has declined to comment on the robbery.
Place Vendome has been the scene of several heists in recent years.

The Cross River State Police Command on Thursday paraded a 54-year-old man, Valentine Ebani, for being in possession of the decomposed head of a police inspector, Michael James, who was recently killed in Uyanga, in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.

Ebani, who was identified as the chief priest and village head of Uyanga, was arrested along with seven others who were suspected to have killed the inspector and taken his head to the village shrine.
James was killed and beheaded in Uyanga on December 25, 2017 during a communal clash between Uyanga and neighbouring Ojor, both in the Akamkpa LGA.

The communities had in recent times been involved in violent communal clashes that had claimed the lives of several persons, while property worth millions of naira was destroyed.

James, who was attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Enugu, had taken his family on a visit to his in-laws at Ojor village when he was beheaded by rioting youths in Uyanga.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said the late policeman had visited his in-law, ASP Dominic Umoh, in Ojor village when the incident happened.

“While buying fuel, Uyanga youths, without provocation, attacked, killed and beheaded him. His corpse has yet to be found. However, his severed head has been recovered at Uyanga shrine.

“The youths also seized the late inspector’s AK-47 rifle, with double magazines and set ablaze his Toyota Sienna, with number plate, ENU 683 NK,” he said.

Inuwa said police investigation led to the arrest of Isaac Akpan, Benjamin Abakum, Patrick Edet and Famous Archibong.

Other suspects are Effiong Odu, Ndifon Arong and Wisdom Inok.

The police boss said items recovered from the suspects included one locally-made pistol, 17 empty cartridges, underwear of the deceased and one human skull.

The commissioner also said the command arrested no fewer than 529 suspected criminals during the festive period.
