The World Cup-winning French team returned home to a heroes’ welcome on Monday as hundreds of thousands packed the Champs Elysees for their victory parade ahead of a presidential reception in the evening.
Ahead of the award of France’s top honour, Legion of Honour by President Emmanuel Macron to the team, in Paris, the metro system temporarily renamed six of its stations in honour of the key players. Victor Hugo stop — named after the famed 19th-century writer — becomes Victor Hugo Lloris after the team’s goalkeeper.
Two stations were rebaptised in tribute to Deschamps, who captained the national side to its first World Cup victory, won on home soil in 1998.
Alongside Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer, Deschamps has become only the third man to win the World Cup both as a player and coach.
France overcame a determined Croatia team to win 4-2 in Sunday’s final, with teenager Kylian Mbappe applying the coup de grace and cementing his place as a new global superstar at the age of just 19.
The players arrived to a raucous welcome at Charles De Gaulle airport northeast of Paris, including a “water salute” by the fire brigade which sprayed arcs of water over the Air France jet as it taxied to the gate.
Captain Hugo Lloris, flanked by coach Didier Deschamps, was the first to emerge from the aircraft, raising the famed golden trophy before heading down the stairs and onto a freshly laid red carpet.
Commentators have focused on the outpouring of patriotism and sense of national unity created by the multiethnic French team, many of whose stars including Mbappe and Paul Pogba hail from deprived and often overlooked suburbs of Paris.
Millions of fans in France celebrated into the night, honking car horns and flying the tricolour flag while the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe were lit up in the national colours of blue, white and red.
Crowds began converging early Monday on the Champs Elysees, the gathering point for all national celebrations, for a parade by the team atop an electric bus expected to start in the early evening.
“We’re so proud of this team, they have truly become our players,” said Priscilla Lagneaux, 28, who was waiting with friends under a wilting sun on the avenue. “We had to see them, and also the Cup.”
Laurent Joffrin, editor of the leftwing Liberation newspaper, said they had lived up to the ideal of “the republic that we love: united and diverse, patriotic and open, national without being nationalist”.
After the parade France’s newest idols will be welcomed at the Elysee Palace by Emmanuel Macron, whose office has already promised the Legion of Honour for the victors’ “exceptional services” to the country.
Around 1,000 youths from local soccer clubs across the country, including the gritty Bondy suburb which produced Mbappe, are expected as guests at the reception at the Elysee presidential palace.
“We’re going to say thank you!” said Sacha, one of the young players already at the palace. “I don’t regret not going on vacation this summer.”
The team will have a private meeting with Macron and his wife Brigitte, and then they will enter the palace’s gardens where Macron is expected to make a speech.
Afterwards guests will be treated to the beats of DJ Snake, who has worked with pop stars including Lady Gaga and is part of the Pardon My French collective of French DJs.
Macron had already celebrated with the team on Sunday — even doing “dab” dance moves with players in a video that has gone viral — after attending the final in Moscow.
Some analysts believe the 40-year-old centrist will benefit from the feelgood factor sweeping France, with Macron able to show a common touch after months of criticism from his opponents that he is distant and elitist.
Later the team will attend a dinner in their honour at the posh Hotel du Crillon.

No fewer than 45 persons have been reported killed after a downpour wreaked havoc in 10 communities in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.

More than 1,000 houses were also destroyed with over 250 livestock confirmed killed in the heavy rain which started around 11:00 pm on Sunday and lasted till the early hours of today.

Some of the communities affected by the flood are Kwata, Dantudu, Sabuwar, Tukare, Tsohuwar Tukare and Ungwar Mai Kwari, among others.

The failure of the rain to stop on time caused the river channels in the affected villages to overflow their banks, killing many residents and sweeping away several vehicles, motorcycles and farmlands, in the process.

The disaster also sacked many residents from their homes and shops as their apartments were flooded.

The Head of Jibia Local Government Administration, Almustapha Idris, confirmed to Channels Television that 21 persons were buried on Monday.

He added that authorities from the neighbouring Niger Republic have asked them to come and recover 18 more bodies.

As at the time of filing this report, residents were still salvaging their properties from their homes while some were packing out of the affected areas.

The State Governor, Aminu Masari, has since visited the affected communities but refused to speak to reporters.

The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had listed Katsina as one of the states that would experience heavy rainfall, in its forecast earlier in the year.

The incident occurred less than three weeks after President Muhammadu Buhari visited Katsina, his home-state to commiserate with the victims and families of those affected by an earlier rainstorm.

During his visit on June 29, he visited the palace of the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Usman, where he addressed the people.

The previous rainstorm also claimed lives, although not as much as that of Sunday, and caused serious damage to some communities in Charanchi, Mashi, and Musawa LGAs of the state.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has dumped the political party, All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor disclosed this on Monday, at the Government House in Makurdi, the state capital, while swearing in his Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Jerome Torshimbe.

Explaining the reasons behind his action, the governor said he has been sent out of APC and is currently exploring a new option to actualise his future ambition.

The governor has not, however, announced the party he will be joining, saying only that he is consulting with relevant stakeholders and will soon announce his next move.

“As for party, I have been given a red card and I’m outside the pitch. So, if I have been given a red card and I’m standing outside, I’m a free man,

“So, I don’t know what will happen next; but I’m waiting. If approached, then I will tell the Benue people that I’m joining another football club,” he said.

The governor, speaking concerning the challenges confronting the state expressed the belief that it will soon come to an end.

“Many people have been wondering that though we dedicated the state to God, we are still facing challenges; but all these challenges that we see today, we shall see them no more.”

Governor Ortom urged his newly appointed special adviser to justify the confidence reposed in him through hardwork and commitment to duty and to imbibe the core values of his administration which include transparency, accountability, justice and equity.

The third main land bridge in Lagos will be shut down for three days, starting from July 27, the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has said.

He said this on Monday while addressing some confusion over the period for the road closure, on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

According to him, the bridge will only be closed for three days, contrary to reports that it will be closed for 27 months.

“I think somebody mistook the date 27th of July for 27 months, I don’t know how that came about but there was a signed statement from my office and it didn’t contain 27 months”.

The 3-day closure according to him, will enable the contractors assess the true state of the road, after which repair works will commence by the end of the year or at the start of next year (2019).

The minister also noted that the closure would have come much earlier, but the government decided to wait until schools begin to go on vacation, in order to reduce the amount of traffic on the roads.

“The statement we put out was that it was going to be closed for three days, from the 27th of July.

“We were torn between maintenance and safety and people’s convenience but essentially, the first three days at the end of this month as issued in our press statement, will be for investigative work to be conducted to assess the current condition.

“There is a procurement for maintenance that has been approved but between that time and now, some things may have changed so we wanted to do an examination again just to be sure that there has been no material deterioration beyond what we procured.

“After that, our engineers and contracting firms will then lay out the plan of works.

“Some of the equipment and materials have to be imported, either later in the year or early next year, then we will be able to start the repair.

“That will imminently compel some closure as we have had in the past when I was governor. We closed it for about 12 weeks but (this time) we will try to reduce the period of closure as much as possible,” he said.

Having been constructed since the last 30 years, there are fears that the bridge which usually has high vehicular traffic, could collapse, if is not properly maintained.

The former governor, therefore stressed the importance of the closure for the said investigation and subsequently, the repairs to be carried out.

According to him, the government years ago, had commenced the maintenance process but was unable to complete it because of cuts in the budget.

However, he says despite the inconveniences it may bring about, it has become highly necessary to do the needful now.

“This is a choice between people’s safety ultimately. That bridge must not collapse, and it needs maintenance. It has been built now for about 30 something years.

“If you recall, the maintenance that was done at the time wasn’t completed because the budget was cut. That was why they now did it in phases, so, we are back to what we should have done before.

“It is costing more, but it needs to be done,” he said.

On the time frame for which the repairs will eventually be completed, he said he could not ascertain that until the 3-day investigation is concluded.

“The first 3 days is what I can speak of now. At the end of this, we will come back to the members of the public and say to you definitively, based on the outcome of what we get from this assessment, how long it is going to take.

“I’m not in a position to say that now until that report comes back to us but what will happen at the end of July is three days”.

Obama, America’s first black president and a favourite in Africa, was also shown touring the Sauti Kuu Centre, sporting a casual white shirt and a pair of shades.

Locals hoping to get a glimpse of Obama lined the roads near the centre, with one school girl telling Kenya’s NTV “I’m happy to see our elder brother come today.”

After Obama arrived in the country on Sunday, he met with President Uhuru Kenyatta, who tweeted “It was great to welcome you back @BarackObama.”

Obama will head to South Africa on Tuesday to give a key speech for Nelson Mandela’s centenary – his first major public address since leaving office.

The Nigerian Army has denied the reported disappearance of some soldiers and military vehicles after a Boko Haram attack on the troops during an operation in Borno State.

Over the weekend, reports by some media said that at least 23 Nigerian soldiers are missing following an ambush by Boko Haram insurgents on a military convoy at Boboshe Village in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State with eight military trucks crated away.

Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Texas Chukwu in a statement made available to Channels Television on Monday, however, debunked this report noting that it is “untrue and misleading.”

“The Nigerian Army wishes to state categorically that the report is not only untrue but misleading as the said report is blown out of proportion by the media.

“Contrary to the report, the Nigerian Army wishes to put the record straight on the issue and assure members of the public particularly residents of the North East to disregard the report as their safety is guaranteed.”

The military spokesperson disclosed that there was an attempted attack on troops in Bama area of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram terrorists due to the bad roads where some military vehicles were stuck, the terrorists were successfully repelled and some arrested.

“There was an attempted attack on troops at Kwakwa and Chingori communities in Bama area of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram Terrorists as a result of difficult terrain where our vehicles bugged down.

“The terrorists also attempted to cart away troops operational vehicles but were successfully repelled by our gallant troops with the support of the Nigerian Air Force.

“About 22 members of Boko Haram terrorists were neutralised while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. Efforts are being intensified by the troops to get the fleeing members of the Boko Haram terrorists.”

Chukwu, however, added that one officer and a soldier sustained injuries during the attack and they are currently receiving medical attention at the military medical facility.

He urged members of the public to disregard the report of the missing soldiers and go about their legitimate businesses as the “Nigerian Army is on top of the situation.”

Four policemen attached to Sabongida-Ora Division were, yesterday, killed by unknown persons at the road intersection between Oke-Ora and Avbiosi in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Our correspondent gathered that the policemen, who were on patrol, were victims of an ambush, as their assailants shot them when they were about to alight from their Toyota Hilux van, which was then set ablaze with the bodies inside, even as their weapons were allegedly taken way by the assailants.

Chairman of Owan West Local Government Area, Mr. Frank Ilaboya, who confirmed the incident, said in a telephone interview that “from information available to me, the policemen were about to alight from their vehicle when the assailants opened fire on them.

“They were said to have set the patrol vehicle ablaze and took away their guns. I cannot confirm whether they were armed robbers or not.

“As I speak with you, the communities in the area are in total confusion.

However, I have convened an emergency security meeting for this afternoon (yesterday) to look at the issue because there is no eyewitness to give an account of what really happened.”

Edo State Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Chidi Nwanbuzor, said: “I just received the information from the media. We are yet to be briefed.”
