Senator Isah Misau

The Federal Government through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has filed two separate sets of charges against the Senator Isah Misau who is representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

One of the two sets of charges, marked FCT/HC/CR/345/2017, filed before an Abuja High Court is predicated on the running battle between Senator Misau and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

The prosecution in the first charge accuses Senator Misau, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, of making “injurious falsehood” against Idris and the Nigeria Police Force based on various allegations of corruption made by the Senator against the IGP in the media.

Part of the allegations by Misau considered injurious to the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force was that the police officers allegedly paid N2.5 million to get special promotion and posting through the Police Service Commission.

Misau also accused the IGP of allegedly diverting money meant for the purchase of Armoured Personnel Carriers, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and other exotic cars.

The Federal lawmaker is also said to have falsely accused the IGP of making almost half of the mobile commanders in the country the people of his Nupe extraction.

The offences are said to be contrary to Section 393(1) of the Penal Code.

In another set of charges, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/170/2017, the prosecution preferred seven counts of making and “uttering” false documents comprising affidavits, statutory declaration of age deposed to at FCT High Court and the Bauchi State Health Management Board Birth Certificate, which he allegedly submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission in 2011 and 2014.

The offences in the seven counts were said to be contrary to Section (1)(2)(c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under the same section of the Act.

The two sets of charges signed by Mister Aminu Alilu, an Assistant Chief State Counsel who is of the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federal Ministry of Justice is yet to be assigned to a Judge.

Misau had earlier said a point of order asking the Senate to probe the IGP over alleged corrupt practices and misconduct.

Neymar

Neymar has demanded UEFA expel Barcelona from the Champions League in a dispute over a bonus payment.

It is understood that representatives of the Brazilian made the request to European football's governing body as a row between the player and his old club over a loyalty bonus continues.

The 25-year-old completed a world record transfer from Barca to Paris St Germain in the summer, but his camp insist the timing of the move meant the club were obliged to pay him a loyalty bonus, reportedly worth around £23m.

Barcelona were reported to have refused this request and are themselves seeking repayment of a contract renewal bonus paid when Neymar signed a new five-year contract with the Catalan club in the autumn of 2016.

Barca said that payment was worth £7.6m.

Now Neymar, formerly a Nou Camp favourite, has called on UEFA to kick the five-time European champions out of this season's competition.

It is understood UEFA is yet to respond to the letter from the Neymar camp.

UEFA announced on September 1 it was opening an investigation into PSG's summer spending to establish whether or not the French club had complied with Financial Fair Play regulations.

As well as activating the release clause in Neymar's contract which equated to a world record £198m at the time, the club have also agreed a loan deal with Monaco to bring in France striker Kylian Mbappe with an option to buy him on a permanent basis next summer for a reported fee of £166m.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno says about 40 Boko Haram insurgents have indicated willingness to surrender to the Corps in the state.
The Commandant of the corps in the state, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) on Wednesday in Maiduguri.
Abdullahi said that the insurgents had indicated their intention to renounce membership of the terrorist group but through an intermediary.
He said that negotiations between the command and the insurgents were conducted through a firewood vendor.
He also said that six insurgents had earlier surrendered to the Corps in the last one month in the state.
The commandant stated that the extremists surrendered voluntarily under the Federal Government’s Safe Corridor Initiative(SCI).
“About 40 of the insurgents have come forward to surrender. They indicated that many of them are willing to lay down their arms,” Abdullahi said.
According to him, the command has also conducted town hall meetings with communities and religious leaders to enhance security in the state.
NAN report that hundreds of the insurgents had surrendered to the Nigerian Army under the SCI in the past three months.
The surrendered insurgents are currently undergoing De-radicalisation process at the Military Rehabilitation Centre, Gombe, to facilitate their reintegration into the society. (NAN)

North Korea’s Leader, Kim Jong Un

U.S. and South Korean wartime operational plans, including a plan to wipe out the North Korean leadership, were stolen by North Korean hackers last year, a South Korean ruling party lawmaker said on Wednesday.
Some 235 gigabytes of military documents were taken from South Korea’s Defense Integrated Data Center in September last year, Democratic Party representative Rhee Cheol-hee said in radio appearances on Wednesday, citing information from unidentified South Korean defense officials.
In May, an investigative team inside the defense ministry announced the hack had been carried out by North Korea, but did not disclose what kind of information had been taken.
The disclosure came as the U.S. military flew two strategic bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force late on Tuesday, just as President Donald Trump met top defense officials to discuss how to respond to any threat from North Korea.
Tensions have soared between the United States and North Korea following a series of weapons tests by Pyongyang and a string of increasingly bellicose exchanges between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
North Korea has launched two missiles over Japan and conducted its sixth nuclear test in recent weeks as it fast advances toward its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland.
The two U.S. Air Force B-1B bombers were joined by two F-15K fighters from the South Korean military after leaving their base in Guam, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement on Wednesday.
After entering South Korean airspace, the two bombers carried out air-to-ground missile drills in waters off the east coast of South Korea, then flew over the South to waters between it and China to repeat the drill, the release said.
The U.S. military said in a separate statement it conducted drills with Japanese fighters after the exercise with South Korea, making it the first time U.S. bombers have conducted training with fighters from both Japan and South Korea at night.
The U.S. bombers had taken off from the Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. In August, Pyongyang threatened to fire intermediate-range missiles toward the vicinity of Guam, a U.S. Pacific territory that is frequently subjected to sabre-rattling from the North.
GUARD RAISED
South Korean and U.S. government officials have been raising their guard against more North Korean provocations with the approach of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of North Korea’s ruling party, which fell on Tuesday.
Trump hosted a discussion on Tuesday on options to respond to any North Korean aggression or, if necessary, to prevent Pyongyang from threatening the United States and its allies with nuclear weapons, the White House said in a statement.

As part of activities marking his third year in office, the Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose, has given jobs to 51 physically challenged persons in the state.

Fayose also directed that additional 100 persons from among them be enlisted in the state’s social security scheme.

Among those given jobs is a university graduate.
Fayose gave the directives in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday evening while meeting with the group.

This is just as a graduate, Gboyega Afolabi, has been offered automatic employment at the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.

A statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, quoted Fayose as directing the Vice Chancellor of EKSU to give Afolabi the job.

Afolabi is about concluding his mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps Scheme in the institution.
While reacting to the development, Afolabi described the governor as God sent to Ekiti.

He said: “He is a peculiar person and kind hearted. He loves the people and he is very approachable. I never imagined that this great opportunity can come my way just like that. Governor Fayose is the leader we need in this country.

“I appeal to the people of the state to vote in somebody from the Fayose political family for these great works to continue. He is truly a leader and lover of the people.”

Afolabi was among those who met the governor and only approached him about his plight during the meeting.

Meanwhile, the governor has also donated N1 million for the medical expenses of people with disabilities.

He has directed the Chief Medical Director of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital to assess the health needs of the people and brief him.

Also, the governor has directed that eye specialists should examine some of the people and that eye glasses be provided for those who need them.

This is just as he said 20 wheel chairs would be bought for them.

The Nigerian Mission in South Africa has confirmed the killing of a 25-year-old Nigerian, Ibrahim Olalekan Badmus, a native of Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the killing occurred less than a week after Jelili Omoyele, a 35-year-old cellular phone technician, was shot dead at Doornfontein, near Johannesburg.

Godwin Adama, Nigeria’s Consul General in South Africa, told the News Agency of Nigeria on the telephone from Johannesburg that Badmus was allegedly killed on Tuesday at Vaal Vreneging, near Johannesburg.

Adama said: “Information at our disposal said that the deceased was killed by a South African police officer.

“I led a delegation from the mission to visit the scene on receipt of the information.

“When we arrived the scene, the place was tensed up because Nigerians there were not happy.”
Adama said the mission intervened and calmed down the situation.

He said: “We immediately met with the Station Commander in the area with some selected Nigerians.

“The police assured that a thorough investigation would be carried out.

“The investigation will be done by the Independent Police Investigating Department.”

The President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Mohammed Yahaya, says the country’s weightlifters have won nine gold medals so far at the ongoing African Junior/Youths Weightlifting Championships in Uganda.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2017 edition of the Championships which started on Saturday is expected to end this Saturday in Entebbe.
Yahaya told NAN in Abuja on Tuesday that the athletes would however still win more gold medals for the country before the end of the tournament.
“Our athletes are well prepared for the competition, with only three of them (female) winning nine gold medals”.
He named the medallists as Islamiyat Yusuf (53 kg), Fatima Yakubu (53kg) and Monica Uweh (48kg).
“I’m happy for the success so far and we are working hard to win more medals in this championship because today (Tuesday) is the first day of the competition. We still have two days to go.
“With this performance, we have the chance to participate in next year’s Commonwealth Games.
“However, we still need to participate in another championship to meet the requirements of the World Weightlifting Federation,” Yahaya said.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games would hold in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia from April 4 2018 to April 15.

Portugal National Team

France and Portugal have clinched qualification for the World Cup, joining 17 other countries that have booked spots in the Russia FIFA World Cup train.
France qualified Tuesday night, thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Belarus on Tuesday.
Didier Deschamps’s side successfully completed their tricky challenge of beating Bulgaria and Belarus in their final two qualifiers.
The victory at the Stade de France meant they avoided the tension of the playoffs that they had to endure to reach the last two finals.
But although they finished top of Group A, Deschamps’s team were less than convincing as already-eliminated Belarus repeatedly penetrated their rearguard.
“We are happy, even if qualifying is logical given the quality of the players I have,” said Deschamps, who also paid tribute to the French supporters.
“We now have an atmosphere that we haven’t had for a while and people are coming and getting fully behind the team,” he said.
Giroud said he was delighted to have avoided the playoffs.
“We chased this game and it wasn’t easy because they were strong and efficient in attack until the final whistle and we had to roll up our sleeves,” the Arsenal forward said.
“We’re all relieved tonight to have ended the campaign with automatic qualification.”
In Lisbon, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal defeated Switzerland 2-0 to earn a place in Russia and consign their opponents to next month’s play-offs.
An own goal from Johan Djourou handed Portugal the lead on 41 minutes and Andre Silva netted a second before the hour as the hosts finished top of Group B ahead of Switzerland on goal difference.
Switzerland, who beat Portugal 2-0 at home last year, had won all nine previous qualifiers but must overcome a two-legged play-off in November to earn a fourth straight World Cup appearance.
Ronaldo, who was injured for the opening qualifying defeat in Basel, returned to the Portugal line-up after coming off the bench to notch the opening goal in a lacklustre 2-0 win in Andorra on Saturday.
Switzerland were attempting to join defending champions Germany — and Spain ahead of the 2010 finals — as the only nations to complete a European World Cup qualifying campaign with a perfect record.
But AC Milan striker Andre Silva forced Yann Sommer into a smart early save from his deflected shot, with the Swiss goalkeeper then forced to make a terrific stop to tip over Bernardo Silva’s venomous effort.

The Nigerian Army says it is set to conduct “Exercise Crocodile Smile II’’ in the South-South and South-West geopolitical zones of the country, beginning from Friday.
The army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Tuesday that the exercise was aimed at training troops in aid of civil authorities in tackling security challenges in those areas.
It will be recalled that between November and December 2016, the army conducted Exercise Crocodile I in the Niger Delta to address crimes such as pipeline vandalism, kidnapping and illegal oil bunkering.
Usman said the second phase of the exercise was designed to consolidate on the gains recorded during the first phase and address similar challenges in the South-West.
“Security challenges in the South-West and Niger Delta geo-political regions such as illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, cultism, kidnapping, militancy and other challenges are becoming rampant.
“The need for troops to sharpen their skills to cope with these security challenges within the 2, 6 and 81 Divisions’ Area of Responsibilities calls for the conduct of Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II.
“This exercise, will therefore, be conducted with the involvement of other security agencies such as the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, just to mention a few,” he said.
Usman added that the exercise was also “conceptualised to leverage on real time intelligence to curtail insecurity”.
He said during the period, emphasis would be placed on raids, cordon and search operations, anti-kidnapping drills, road blocks, check points and other amphibious operations.
The army spokesman said community support activities such as medical outreaches would also feature prominently during the exercise.
He urged members of the public not to panic when they see the movement of military equipment and troops to staging areas as their safety and well-being was guaranteed.
“The public is also requested to remain vigilant, security conscious and report suspected criminals who will likely flee the military exercise areas to find safe haven among communities.
“Contact phone numbers of all Brigade Commanders in the exercise areas would be made public in addition to the Nigerian Army short code Information and call Centre 193,” he said.

AGF, Mr Ahmed Idris

The Federal Government on Tuesday put the cumulative savings from checking the ghost workers’ syndrome through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) at N120 billion
Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris, said this in Abuja in a presentation on the impact of financial reforms on the Nigerian economy, at the 22nd Annual Conference of Certified National Accountants.
The three-day conference, with the theme “Sustainable Economic Management in a Recession: Issues, Strategies and Options”, was organised by the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN).
Idris said that the savings spanned across 10 years, from April 2007 when IPPIS became operational till date.
He said the saving was not limited to detecting ghost workers, as excess personnel cost that had been channeled to non-personnel sub-heads by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) were also recovered.
“From April 2007 when the scheme commenced to date, 459 MDAs have been enrolled with a total number of 310,453 staff.
“Over N120 billion cumulatively saved as a result of the difference between the amount government would have released to the MDAs based on appropriation, and actual amount released and paid through IPPIS.
“By the end of this month (October), we expect to make an additional N100 billion savings after the verification and capturing of the Armed Forces,” he said.
Idris said also that the Treasury Single Account (TSA) had so far saved the government N108.1 billion in account maintenance fees and other charges that would have been paid to banks for managing the accounts of MDAs.
He said that the TSA had also eliminated the bad practice of operating several accounts by MDAs, therefore making it difficult for MDAs to divert public funds.
Idris also recalled that the Government Integrated Financial Management Information system (GIFMIS) went live in April, 2012, and as at date, it had over 300 Ministries, Departments and Agencies on the system.
“GIFMIS has helped government to increase the ability of FGN to undertake central control and monitoring of expenditures and receipts in the MDAs and facilitates access to information on financial and operational performance.
“It has also helped to improve internal controls to prevent and detect potential and actual fraud.
“GIFMIS has also strengthened governance and accountability in MDAs through efficient and effective service delivery,” he said.
Meanwhile the Executive Director of Jos Business School, Mr Ezekiel Gomos, made a presentation on “SMEs as Engine of Economic Development in Nigeria”.
He said that at present, small businesses were failing due to tough operating environment, including infrastructure, regulation, policy and taxes.
Gomos said government needed to encourage SMEs by creating business friendly laws, policies and regulations that would stimulate the latent talents that millions of Nigerians were endowed with.
To make SMEs more viable in the country, he called on the government to promote policies that would favour SMEs rather, than bigger companies.
“Nigerian SMEs cannot drive economic development in the 21st century with 20th century infrastructure. There is need to develop clusters or industrial parks with basic infrastructure for SMEs.
“Also, on access to finance, there is need to make the processes and procedures to access finance less cumbersome and complex.
“We must find innovative solutions to unlock sources of capital, while the need for SME Credit Guarantee Scheme is long overdue,” he said.

For seizing a truck and using it to drive critically injured victims to the hospital after the Las Vegas shooting, Taylor Winston has been handed a truck gift and hailed as a hero by Shane Beus, owner of B5 Motors.
The 29-year-old Winston who reside in San Diego said there were plenty of people who helped out that night.
“I’ve been given a lot more credit than I deserve,” said the soft-spoken U.S. Marine Corps veteran, who was in Arizona Monday to accept the offer of a free truck from B5 Motors in Gilbert.
Winston said he only accepted the 2013 Ford F-150 because the gift will allow him to sell his current vehicle and donate the proceeds to Las Vegas shooting victims.
“It’s been really hard to even get myself to come out here and accept a gift of this caliber,” he said. “But I can turn around and do a lot of good with it, so I’m happy to be here.”
Shane Beus, owner of B5 Motors, said he was so taken when he read about Winston’s actions that he reached out to offer him a truck. Beus said he doesn’t care if Winston keeps the truck, gives the vehicle away or sells it. He just wanted to express his appreciation.
“It’s very, very courageous what he did,” Beus said.
Winston was at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas on the night of Oct. 1 when the gunman opened fire on the audience from a 32nd-floor window in the nearby Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 58 and injuring nearly 500 in what became the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.
