Damini Ogulu, aka. Burna Boy

The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday said that the musician, Damini Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy, recently declared wanted, has yet to report himself to the police over an alleged robbery operation.

The spokesman for the command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, made this known in a statement, stressing that the musician was still at large over an alleged robbery against another musician.

Mr. Edgal Imohimi, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, had on Monday advised the musician to report at the command.
According to Imohimi, Burna Boy was mentioned in a robbery incident at an event organised by Buckwild Media at Eko Hotel, where Abiye David Jombo, another Nigerian musician popularly known as Mr 2K, was attacked after his performance.

Famous-Cole said, “This is contrary to reports making the rounds on the internet that the musician has honoured the police invitation.

“The command would also like to inform the public that only Burna Boy’s father, one Samuel Ogulu, visited the  Police Officer-in-charge of the case with the promise to bring him before the police.

“The Command, however, is using this medium to urge Burna Boy’s father and relatives to do the right thing by bringing the musician to the police, before the long arm of the law catches up with him.

“The command assures that justice will be done,’’ Famous-Cole said.

He added: “I am using this medium to advise Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, to report to the nearest police station as all efforts to locate him at his Lekki residence have proved abortive.

“On October 22, after a show organised by Buckwild Media, one Jumbo who lodged at Eko Hotel, had returned to his room after his performance when he heard a knock on the door.

“The voice had introduced himself as room service and when Jumbo opened the door, four men gained entrance into the room, dispossessed him of valuables worth N11m and tied up the musician and his girlfriend.

“During interrogation, which involved probing the CCTV camera, a girlfriend of one of the hotel workers was arrested.

“She then led the police to the arrest of three other suspects, including Burna boy’s road manager, Joel Kante.
“The suspects confessed that Burna Boy had contacted them to teach Mr 2K a lesson by beating him up.

“The suspects said Ogulu paid them N50,000 as upfront and also paid another N50,000 after the victim was beaten up and robbed,’’ he said.

The Senate on Wednesday announced that it would probe alleged feud among Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Directorate of State Services and National Intelligence Agency over operational issues.

The face-off was said to have stemmed from EFCC’s attempted arrest of former directors-general of DSS, Ita Ekpeyong, and NIA, Ayodele Oke.

The Senate said it would set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the matter within two weeks.

The resolution followed a motion by Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi), drawing the attention of the upper chamber to alleged resistance by DSS and NIA officers on Tuesday when EFCC tried to arrest Ekpeyong and Oke.

Presenting the motion, Melaye said that it was expedient for the Senate to wade into the matter in view of its threat to national security.

“Our responsibility as a senate is to ensure the respect for rule of law. The media have been awash with a disastrous situation that happened yesterday.

“The EFCC went to the resident of the former DG of the DSS, Mr Ita Ekpeyong, to effect arrest and the men of the DSS stopped the EFCC from arresting him.

“The development created gridlock in the area as people living in there were either not allowed to gain entrance to their residents or to move out.

“Same yesterday, the EFCC was stopped from arresting the former DG of NIA, Mr Oke, and the officers of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency stopped that arrest.

“We will recall that the same DG, DSS, had written this senate before now on the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu.

“We are not here to lay blame on anyone but to say Nigeria has been embarrassed before the international community for two sister agencies to be involved in fisticuffs,” he said.

The lawmaker said that the incident was a recipe for national disaster which should not be allowed to continue.

He stressed that Nigeria was not a banana republic and as such, the rule of law must be respected by all.

Melaye pointed out that “if two security agencies will engage in this shameful act, which involves the threat to life, what will happen when two civilians are fighting.

“This matter should not be taken lightly as we cannot allow Nigeria to be ridiculed on a daily basis by those who are supposed to defend her integrity.

“I call on the Senate to investigate this matter and ask the leadership to wade into the situation immediately.’’

Contributing, Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, Mrs Biodun Olujimi, said it was a dangerous situation that should be nipped in the bud.

According to her, it is shameful for security agencies to be involved in such a fight.

“We never thought a day like this will come but we saw it coming. Right now, we have a situation where no one is in charge of anything. I support the motion.

“The truth is that you cannot go to the house of a security agent, a man who has kept the secret of this country and arrest him like a chicken.

“Remember we rejected Magu but he is still there. The Senate is being defied. The Presidency has to be called to order. Somebody has to be in charge,” she said.

On his part, the Leader of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, supported the motion, saying “what Melaye has presented is seeking that the Senate investigates what happened and it is one rare motion.

“However, I want to say that President Muhammadu Buhari is in full control of the government.

“Even when he was away to attend to his health, the Vice President was in control. There was never a vacuum.

“In my opinion, could it be that the EFCC did not get the right document to effect the arrest and if they did, our investigation will reveal,’’ he said.

Lawan called for calm, assuring that the matter would be investigated.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, urged the lawmakers to remain calm while the ad hoc committee probed the development.

The   feud between the leadership of the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, reached its crescendo yesterday morning as operatives of the former prevented the anti-graft agency from arresting its former Director-General, Ita Ekpenyong and former boss of National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Ayodele Oke.

It was learned that EFCC operatives had laid ambush around Ekpenyong’s home at Number 46 Mamman Nasir, in the highbrow area of Asokoro, as early as  6 am  to pick him up to answer questions on what he knows about the amount of money the agency collected from the office of the embattled National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki retd, just before the 2015 poll.

But the operatives, armed with search and arrest warrants, were turned back by DSS operatives attached to Ekpenyong.

Ita Ekpenyong

Vanguard learned that although the number of DSS operatives attached to the ex-DG’s home was not as many as those of the EFCC, who were about to arrest him, the DSS called for reinforcement from its headquarters.

A source present at the scene said no fewer than 30 well armed DSS operatives were dispatched from the DSS headquarters in Abuja to tackle the EFCC operatives and block them from taking their former DG away.

The source said:  “Officers of the Department of State Services, DSS, today thwarted the attempt by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to arrest a former Director General of the agency, Mr. Ekpeyong Ita, who is being investigated.

“Detectives of the EFCC, armed with both arrest and search warrants, had stormed the  46 Mamman Nasir, Asokoro, Abuja  residence of the former DG at about 6am today (yesterday) but were prevented from gaining entry by armed guards from the DSS.

“Shortly after the EFCC operatives arrived, the DSS reinforced its security presence at the property with the deployment of 30 armed operatives.

“The refusal of the DSS operatives to allow the EFCC execute valid search and arrest warrants is considered worrisome.

“I don’t know whether it is within their brief to prevent a law enforcement agency from executing arrest or search warrant on a property belonging to a retired staff of the agency. ‘’The suspect in question is not a serving officer of the DSS, which makes this action particularly reprehensible,” the EFCC source said.

It was learned last night that President Muhammadu Buhari would step into the matter and rein in the DSS to enable the EFCC bring Ekpenyong to account for his actions while in office.

Besides, operatives of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency, NIA, also blocked the EFCC from arresting former DG of the agency, Amb. Ayodele Oke, who was sacked last month by President Buhari, after over $43 million was found in an Ikoyi apartment, which is believed to belong to his wife.

Ayodele Oke

A source said the former NIA Director-General refused to submit himself to the EFCC for arrest because he had honoured their previous invitation before.

On the part of the NIA boss, Vanguard learnt from a source close to DSS, who said:  ‘’Shortly after the DG was suspended, the President set up a committee headed by Babagana Kingibe to probe all the DG’s activities while in office and that committee is to report directly to the President.

The committee has not completed its job, so the EFCC should wait until this is over. ”Besides, the current DG is still debriefing his predecessor on his activities while in office.”

But the EFCC was silent on the blockade of its officers and men at the entrance of Oke’s home, also in Asokoro.

‘The blockade notwithstanding, the EFCC has vowed to take necessary steps to bring the two men to justice.

Zimbabwe Ex VP, Emmerson Mnangagwa

(Reuters/LR News) Former vice president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is expected to be sworn in as president following the resignation of Robert Mugabe, will return home on Wednesday, a ruling party ZANU-PF official said.
Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe’s president on Tuesday, a week after the army and his former political allies moved to end four decades of rule by a man once feted as an independence hero who became feared as a despot.
Mnangagwa, whose sacking this month prompted the military takeover that forced Mugabe out, was expected to land in Zimbabwe at 1130 GMT, Larry Mavhima, an ally of the former vice president, told Reuters.
Mnangagwa, 75, who fled from Zimbabwe in fear of his safety after being sacked this month, could be sworn in as president later on Wednesday or on Thursday and is likely to lead ZANU-PF into elections in 2018.
Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe’s president on Tuesday, a week after the army and his former political allies moved to end four decades of rule by a man once feted as an independence hero who became feared as a despot.
The 93-year-old Mugabe had clung on for a week after an army takeover, with ZANU-PF urging him to go.
He finally resigned moments after parliament began an impeachment process seen as the only legal way to force him out.
People danced in the streets of Harare and car horns blared at the news that the era of Mugabe, who had led Zimbabwe since independence in 1980, was finally over.
Some brandished posters of Mnangagwa and army Chief General Constantino Chiwenga.
Speaker of parliament Jacob Mudenda is due to hold a news conference at 0830 GMT.

Uber is in the news again and this time a Colorado, U.S. regulators issued an $8.9 million fine against its parent company for allowing employees with serious criminal or motor vehicle offenses to work for the company as drivers.
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission said it launched an investigation into the ride-hailing service in March after an Uber passenger said his driver assaulted him in the mountain resort town of Vail.
Within the last year and a half, the commission said it found that nearly 60 of the company’s drivers were allowed to work in Colorado despite having previous felony convictions.
The drivers included a habitual offender, a former prison escape and others with major traffic violations including drunk driving.
Colorado state law prevents people with felony convictions, alcohol or drug-related driving offenses, unlawful sexual offenses and major traffic violations from working for rideshare companies.
“We have determined that Uber had background check information that should have disqualified these drivers under the law, but they were allowed to drive anyway.
“These actions put the safety of passengers in extreme jeopardy,” Public Utilities Commission Director Doug Dean said.
In a statement, the commission said it also found felony convictions that Uber didn’t catch, and “in other cases, we could not confirm criminal background checks were even conducted by the company.”
Uber said in a statement that it recently discovered a “process error” that was inconsistent with Colorado’s ridesharing regulations and affected what the company called a small number of drivers.
It said it notified the state and fixed the problem but did not elaborate.
“Per Uber safety policies and Colorado state regulations, drivers with access to the Uber app must undergo a nationally accredited third party background screening.
“We will continue to work closely with the CPUC to enable access to safe, reliable transportation options for all Coloradans,” it said.
The Colorado PUC said the $8.9 million penalty was calculated based on a $2,500 fine for each day an employee was illegally behind the wheel.
The commission said Uber can pay half of that amount within ten days to resolve the case or it can schedule a hearing and contest the allegations in before a judge.
The company’s image has been tarnished by findings of sexual harassment of employees and multiple reports of drivers assaulting passengers.
Last week, two women who said they were sexually assaulted by Uber drivers filed a federal lawsuit in San Francisco alleging that inadequate background checks and monitoring left them and thousands of others vulnerable.

The United Nations (UN) has written to the North Korean Army notifying it of the violation of the armistice agreement between North and South Korea after its soldiers fired across the line that divides the two countries in pursuit of a defector last week.
The UN Command in South Korea played dramatic security footage of the soldier’s brazen defection across the heavily fortified demilitarized zone (DMZ) at a news conference on Wednesday.
It showed the soldier running across the border as North Korean soldiers shot at him and South Korean troops later crawling to rescue him.
As well as firing across the border, one North Korea soldier crossed the military demarcation line (MDL) which is another violation of the armistice that paused the Korean War in 1953, said Col. Chad Carroll, U.S. Forces Korea public affairs director.
A peace treaty formally ending the war has never been signed.
Carroll said that the UN Command had notified the North Korean People’s Army of the violations via regular communication channels and requested a meeting to discuss the results of the UN investigation into the incident as well as measures to prevent future such violations.
“The armistice agreement was challenged, but it remains in place,” Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, the American who leads the UN Command.
The soldier is the third member of the North Korean armed forces to defect this year.
