FRSC spokesman, Bisi Kazeem

There are strong indications that personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) would soon begin to bear arms.

FG Approves Firearms For FRSC Officials
Speaking with Newsmen, a member of the FRSC board, who pleaded anonymity, said:
“The FRSC has built its armoury in Gwagwalada Abuja, while there are weapon rooms in all the commands of the corps.”

“We are waiting for government to gazette the approval and equip the armoury in line with the act that established the corps.”

“The essence of the ongoing training and workshop for the personnel is to prepare them on how to comport themselves while bearing arms on duty.”

Speaking also to the news outlet, the commission’s spokesman, Bisi Kazeem, revealed that though the act permits FRSC personnel to bear arms, the corps is waiting for government to gazette the approval.

“I am not aware that the government has perfected a plan to gazette the approval. I am not aware of that,” he said.

In December 2016, the FRSC was forced to release a statement urging members of the public to ignore reports that the corps had begun distributing and mandating its personnel to carry arms.

The statement came amid a complaint by Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi that 70 officers lost their lives that year to reckless motorists.

But Kazeem had told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the rumour was being circulated by mischievous elements seeking to provoke disorder in the society.

Some “irresponsible” people took a statement by the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, out of context to suit their agenda, he said.

Amazon.com Inc  on Tuesday joined Apple Inc in the  $1 trillion club, becoming the second member of the group after its stock price doubled in 15 months.
If the online retailer’s share price continues at its recent pace, it will be a matter of when, not if, Amazon’s market valuation eclipses that of iPhone maker Apple, which reached $1 trillion on Aug. 2.
Apple took almost 38 years as a public company to achieve the trillion dollar milestone, while Amazon got there in 21 years. While Apple’s iPhone and other devices remain popular and its revenues are growing, it is not keeping up with Amazon’s blistering sales growth.
Amazon has impressed investors by successfully diversifying its business into virtually every corner of the retail industry, altering how consumers buy products and putting major pressure on many brick-and-mortar stores.
It also provides video streaming services and bought upscale supermarket Whole Foods. And its cloud computing services for companies have become a major driver of earnings and revenue.
“Amazon’s a little bit more dynamic than Apple because the iPhone has become more mature. Amazon’s cloud business is an extra growth driver that Apple doesn’t have,” said Daniel Morgan, portfolio manager at Synovus Trust in Atlanta, Georgia who describes Amazon’s cloud services as its “crown jewel.”
In the second quarter the unit accounted for 55 percent of Amazon’s operating income and 20 percent of total revenue, according to Morgan.
Apple started trading in December 1980 but its stock did not truly start to take flight for another 25 years, spurred by the iPhone, the breakthrough device that left competitors in the dust.
Amazon – founded as an online book-retailer in Chief Executive Jeff Bezos’ garage in 1994 – started trading on May 15 1997 at $1.50 on a split-adjusted basis.
By October 2009 it had risen to $100 and the stock hit $1,000 for the first time on May 30, 2017. It has held above that level since October 27, 2017.
Just 10 months later, on Aug. 30, Amazon shares hit $2,000 for the first time, just $50 per share away from giving the company a $1 trillion market value. That milestone, just a month after it reached a $900 billion valuation threshold.
Amazon shares were last up 1.1 percent at $2,035.69, pulling back slightly from the milestone level of $2050.2677.
Amazon currently trades up 74.0 percent for the year to date. In comparison, Apple has risen about 34.7 percent year to date.
Analysts expect Apple’s revenue to jump 14.9 percent in its fiscal year ending in September, according to Thomson Reuters data, a hefty rise but still far short of Amazon’s expected revenue growth of 32 percent for 2018.

The Police Command in Cross River has arrested a couple for allegedly trafficking their two-year old first son to an agent in Port Harcourt in exchange for money.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, who presented the suspects to journalists on Tuesday in Calabar, said the couple was arrested on July 23 in Calabar after a report by the mother of the child, Mrs Magdalene Bassey.
Inuwa explained that the mother of the child reported that her husband, Mr Daniel Bassey, gave out the child to a trafficking agent for an undisclosed amount of money.
“On July 23 2018, one Mrs Magdalene Bassey reported at Efut Divisional Headquarters in Calabar that her husband, Mr Daniel Bassey, took their first son to an unknown person in Port Harcourt through one woman called `Mummy’.
“The police immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect. During interrogation; the suspect revealed that his wife was a party to the transaction.
“The duo are now in police custody to unravel the cause of this inhuman action and possible prosecution,” he said.
The father of the child told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he gave out the child as collateral for N180,000 to help him pay his house rent .
“I did it based on the debt of N21,000 I collected from a friend to pay my house rent.
“There is no work in this rainy season and I am jobless.  A guy from my area informed me that he knows a woman who lends money to people.
“That my friend told me that I can give out the child as collateral to get the money without necessarily selling him.
“The woman gave me N180,000 immediately after she received the child.
“After that, my mother in-law came and asked me of the child and I lied to her that I took the baby to my brother for holiday,” he said.
The commissioner also presented 37 suspected armed robbers; 20 suspected cultists; eight suspects for unlawful possession of firearms and five suspects for murder, among others.
He assured that the command would continue to work in collaboration with other security agencies and residents of the state with a view to safeguarding lives and property.

A 63-year-old landlord, Adekunle Santos, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly removing the entrance door of his tenant’s shop and taking away property valued at N994,850.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Santos on May 23 around 3.30pm allegedly broke into his tenant’s shop, Esther Demola, and removed her door, thereby exposing her goods to thugs, who allegedly carted away items valued at N994,850.

Demola, a hairdresser, had told our correspondent that her travail began when Santos’s sister-in-law, identified only as Iyalode, came to her shop to take a weave worth N10,000, which she refused to release for free.

She claimed that Santos, who took sides with Iyalode in the matter, threatened to make life difficult for her.

She added that her stylist, identified only as Balikis, who was around when Santos allegedly destroyed her shop, called her attention to the break-in but before she could get to the scene, her goods had been taken away.

Santos was arraigned on Monday on four counts of conspiracy, stealing, damage and breach of peace.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police prosecutor, Emby Ingobo, said the offences were contrary to Section 411 and punishable under sections 280, 287, 273 (d) and 168 (1) (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The magistrate, Mrs A. M. Davies, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.

She said the surety must be tax compliant and have his address verified.

The case was adjourned till September 24, 2018, for mention. LR News

Acting DSS Boss, Mathew Seiyefa

The acting Director General of the Department of State Services, Mr Mathew Seiyefa, has recalled officers he transferred out of the headquarters of the agency when he resumed office on August 1.

The decision to recall the officers followed the open directive given Seiyefa by the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Abba Kyari, who was said to have scolded the new DSS boss for carrying out reorganisation in the agency without clearance from the Villa.

Seiyefa became the acting DG of the Service following the shocking sacking of its erstwhile DG,  Mr Lawal Daura.

The then acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), who sacked Daura, ordered him to hand over to the most senior officer in the agency.

Daura, who hails from Katsina State, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari, was also handed over to the police for debriefing.

President Buhari was not in Nigeria when Daura was sacked.

Daura was relieved of his position because of the role he played in the deployment of operatives in the National Assembly, an action that portrayed the Federal Government as anti-democratic.

It was speculated then that Daura took the action in conjunction with some people in the Villa, without the knowledge of Osinbajo.

Seiyefa, who was then serving at the Institute of Security Studies, Bwari, Abuja, immediately carried out some reorganisations immediately he assumed office.

Among those he transferred were the Director of Operations, Mr Bassey Eteng,  and another Director,  Grace Kentebe.

Both of them were among those that Kyari asked Seiyefa to return to their duty posts.

A source close to the agency told our correspondent in Abuja on Monday night that, “There is tension everywhere because the directive has been complied with by personnel, most especially by those who instigated it.

“Both Eteng and Kentebe have reported. Personnel morale is at its lowest ebb.

“Even quite a significant number of the personnel of northern extraction are not happy with the Chief of Staff because they said himself and the ousted DG had not been good to the service.

“Meanwhile, there is every possibility that the service may witness an unprecedented protest against the undue interference in the affairs of the service by the Chief of Staff to the President.”

Our correspondent gathered that the Presidency had yet to decide on whether to confirm Seiyefa or appoint another officer as a replacement for Daura.

Some members of the Presidency cabal were said to have been making moves aimed at frustrating the confirmation of the acting DG because of political interests.

The aides of the President, who were said not to be happy about the unceremonious sacking of Daura, were also said to be lobbying to have a say in who would replace him.

Daura, it was gathered,  had nominated Eteng as a “worthy successor” and could be useful to the cabal ahead of the 2019 elections.

The cabal is believed to be considering other options, including the possibility of appointing a substantive DG outside the service.

Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide has faulted the alleged moves by the Presidency to remove Mr Matthew Seiyefa as the DG of the DSS and reinstate the sacked Lawal Daura.

The President, IYC, Mr Eric Omare, said, “While the IYC recognises the fact that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has the power to hire and fire head of security agencies in the country, we wish to state that the President also has a corresponding mandatory constitutional duty to ensure that such appointments are in line with the Federal Character principle.

“As of today, Seiyefa is one of the few heads of security agencies in Nigeria from the southern part of the country, hence it would amount to grave violation of the Federal Character principle of the constitution to replace Seiyefa, who was appointed less than a month ago, with a northerner as alleged.

“Consequently, the IYC strongly calls on President Buhari to put a stop to the Satanic plan by the Presidency cabal to replace Seiyefa as Director General of the DSS because there is no basis for it. Seiyefa is doing a great job in repositioning the SSS and what he deserves is encouragement from the Presidency and not a replacement.”
