             Biafra Security Service

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Adeleye Oyebade, has declared the Biafra Security Service, which the Indigenous People of Biafra formed recently, illegal.

The police commissioner warned at a press briefing in Umuahia, the state capital, that those behind the security network, which he described as “unlawful and illegal”, should retrace their steps.

According to Oyebade, the Nigerian constitution recognizes only the Nigerian Police, Nigeria Army and the Department of State Service.

He said any other group claiming to be providing security without the backing of the constitution was illegal.

He further warned that the full weight of the law would be brought upon the promoters of the security outfit whom, he noted, were displaying videos of the “illegal” BSS on their social media network.

Oyebade said the police and other security operatives in the state would not fold their hands and watch unscrupulous elements to disrupt the relative peace in the state.

He restated that the police in synergy with sister agencies would make the state safe for business and economic activities.

Lagos-boat-mishap.jpg

The Lagos State Government on Sunday confirmed the death of nine persons in the boat mishap which occurred earlier in the day in Ilashe area of the State.

In a statement issued by the Managing Director of Lagos State Waterways Authority, Engr. Abisola Kamson, the State Government attributed the unfortunate mishap to overloading of passengers on a Banana Boat and operation of illegal jetty.

Kamson said four victims of the mishap who were rescued are already receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, while search and rescue operation was still ongoing.

While commiserating with the families of those that lost their loved ones, the State Government said the mishap had again brought to the fore the need for the National Inland Waterways Authority to respect the recent verdict of the Court of Appeal, which upheld the powers of the State Government to control its intra-inland waterways.

Going into details of the mishap, Kamson said: “An unfortunate incident occurred at Ilashe today Sunday August 20th arising from overloading of passengers on a Banana boat taking off from an illegal Jetty which has become a perennial issue of the Lagos State Government to rid our Waterfront areas of illegal operators.

“We sympathize with the families of the deceased as nine lives were lost in the mishap and four people receiving treatment in the hospital.

“The LASWA rescue team has been on ground and search is still on-going. This brings to fore again the need for NIWA to allow the judgement of the Appeal Court granting Lagos Control of her waterways to take effect without hindrance.

“It is a matter for regret that ever since the judgement was pronounced, NIWA has ejected all State Water Guards monitoring standards from all Federal owned Jetties.

In spite of this, the Government of Lagos State aligns to the safety of citizens on the waterways. All Lagosians are enjoined to wear standard life jackets at all times on our Waterways.

Besides, the LASWA boss urged boat operators and other stakeholders in the inland waterways sector to adhere strictly to safety standards at all times.

Egyptian Baby

Egyptian parents have begun enrolling their infants in a swimming class, taught by a 30-year-old Russian-trained coach, in order to help their babies sleep better at night and improve their flexibility.

The classes are open for infants aged three months to seven-months-old, with the infants learning how to hold their breath underwater for up to 27 seconds.

Mohamed Abdelmaksoud, a diver and swimming instructor, said: “Our training and the methods we use help the babies become more flexible and versatile.

”This allows the babies to start sitting upright and moving before other babies who are the same age.”
Despite some initial nervousness among parents, Abdelmaksoud’s classes have proved popular and the training pool is dotted with parents dunking their babies in and out of the water.

“Honestly, it has helped tone his muscles. At first his body was very stiff and his legs were always close to his torso, but now he has no trouble stretching his legs and he is no longer afraid of the water,” said Heba Helal, cradling her son.
