The Police have insisted that the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, must honour their invitation for questioning about the Offa bank robbery or be forced to do so.

“If the Senate President refuses to honour the invitation, police would not hesitate to use all the instruments of the law to ensure compliance with the law,” the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The police also denied deploying personnel to the resident of the Senate President on Tuesday morning.

“The Nigeria Police Force’s attention was also drawn to the innuendos in the early hours of today (Tuesday) that some policemen were seen surrounding the residence of the Senate President; the Force wishes to categorically state that there was no authorised deployment of police personnel to besiege the residence of the Senate President or his deputy as reported in the media,” Moshood said.

“The police personnel seen in pictures in the media were those in the convoy of the Senate President and others attached to him.”

The police had issued a statement on Monday, asking the Senate President to report to the head of the investigation team at the Intelligence Response Team Office in Asokoro Extension Abuja, at 8 am on Tuesday.

According to the police, Dr Saraki was needed for “further investigation on his indictment from confessional statements from some of the five gang leaders arrested for their active participation in the Offa bank robbery”.

More than 31 persons were killed in the robbery which occurred on April 5, 2018.

However, the Senate President, who had previously denied having anything to do with the robbery, restated his position in a statement hours later.

Apart from insisting he had nothing to do with the robbery, he accused the police of politicising their investigation.

“The police have obviously corrupted and politicised their investigations into the Offa robbery incident,” he alleged shortly after the news of his invitation broke, he was quoted as saying in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Yusuph Olaniyonu.

“They have turned it into an instrument for the party in power to suppress perceived opponents, witch-hunt issue for blackmailing people from freely choosing which platform on which they want to pursue their ambition, and a matter for harassing the people whose exit from APC would harm the chances of the party in the forthcoming elections.”

On Tuesday morning, there was heavy security presence at the home of the Deputy Senate President, while a bus filled with security personnel was spotted at the home of the Senate President when it was visited.

The Senate President told his colleagues, when he eventually arrived at the National Assembly and was presiding over plenary, that the security personnel prevented movement to and from his residence and that of his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

Although the police denied deploying personnel to the residences of the Senate President and his deputy, it said the “episode” will be investigated.

“The Inspector General of Police has directed a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts in the episode,” it said, adding, “The Force will not allow the end of justice to be perverted by this distraction.”

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki made the announcement on Tuesday during plenary.

After the announcement by the Senate President, some Senators started chanting “PDP”, in the chamber.

The Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, appealed to the defecting Senators not to defect.

He noted that the ruling party APC has its own internal disagreement but “this does not translate to factionalization, therefore, they (Senators) have no reason to defect”.

The defecting Senators, however, ignored his appeal.

Security presence at Saraki’s residence in Abuja

Yusuph Olaniyonu, the media adviser to Senator Bukola Saraki said the house of his principal was blocked by the police Tuesday morning.
In a WhatsApp post, he also claimed the house of deputy senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has also been surrounded by DSS agents.
Kola Ologbondiyan, publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party corroborated unusual security presence at Ekweremadu’s house, when he tweeted: “Security operatives block Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu,’s residence in Apo, Abuja”. Ekweremadu’s spokesman Uche Anichukwu confirmed the security presence and said it included operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Both claims have not been verified. And security agents have not spoken on why the actions were taken.

The Nation reported that the police only blocked Saraki’s convoy for about 30 minutes. The convoy was about to leave the house at about 7am when the police arrived.
“When the convoy was cleared to go at about 7.30 a.m, some police vehicles trailed it up to the National Assembly complex.”
Police were said to have extracted a promise from the Senate President that he would honour the invitation by the Inspector General of Police today.
Saraki has been invited by the Inspector General of Police to report at 8a.m today at Guzape Police station to give further statement on the multiple robbery incidents that occurred in Offa, Kwara state on 5 April, in which 31 people were killed.
Some of the suspects arrested claimed Saraki gave them money and guns as members of a group used by the politician to cow opponents.
In a letter sent to Saraki on Monday night, Idris asked him to make himself available to the head of the Investigation Team at the Intelligence Response Team at Guzape Junction, Asokoro Extension, Abuja at 8a.m.
The police had on 4 June asked for Saraki’s reaction to the statement made by some of the suspects arrested in connection to the most deadly robbery in the history of Nigeria. Saraki wrote a statement dated 7 June.
Idris ruled the statement inadequate.
“After a careful perusal of your letter to the Police, it was discovered that the statement requires further clarification and coupled with the fact that you stated that the full text of the statements of the suspects were not shown to you, it is imperative you report to the Police to make further statements after giving you the full text of the statements of the suspects.
“It is in line with the above that you are requested to report to the head of the Investigation Team at the Intelligence Response Team at Guzape Junction, Asokoro Extension, Abuja on 24th of July, 2018 at 8am for further investigation on the matter.”
In a response last night, Saraki described the invitation as a mere afterthought which is designed to achieve political purpose.
“The Police have obviously corrupted and politicized their investigations into the Offa robbery incident. They have turned it into an instrument for the party in power to suppress perceived opponents, witch-hunt issue for blackmailing people from freely choosing which platform on which they want to pursue their ambition and a matter for harassing the people whose exit from APC would harm the chances of the party in the forthcoming elections.
” I want to make it apparent that I have no hand in either the robbery incident or any criminal acitivity. The Police in their haste to embarrass me sent the invitation to me at 8pm and requested that I report to the station by 8am tomorrow morning. This obviously demonstrated their desperation as I do not see why they are now in a hurry.”, Saraki said.

Sen. Buruji Kashamu has said that his  expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), by the National Executive Committee(NEC) of the party would not stand.
“It is clear from the ill-advised decision that the Prince Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee is lawless and undemocratic,” Buruji said in a reaction to his expulsion by the party.
“No due process was followed as enshrined in the Constitution of the party.
“Since the initial 30-day suspension elapsed on Jan. 9, 2018, they do not have any right to take any disciplinary action against me.
“This decision cannot stand because Article 57 (6) of the PDP Constitution which says ‘Any decision taken against a member who has not been informed of the charges against him or has not been given any opportunity of defending himself shall be null and void,’” he said.
The lawmaker added that there are  two suits challenging his initial suspension.
“The first is Suit No. FHC/L/ABJ/CS/1254/2017 between Senator Buruji Kashamu vs. PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, the National Secretary and INEC before the Honourable Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
“PDP should not forget that it also instituted a case against me and other leaders of the party in the South West at the High Court of the Federal Territory in Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/0303/2017 as per the Honourable Justice Valentine Ashi.
“The court made an order nullifying and setting aside my purported suspension on the 9th of January, 2018.The court also ordered parties, including PDP to maintain status quo.
“There are also counter-claims in the said suit at the FCT High Court praying the court for ‘an order restraining the plaintiffs (PDP) their agents, servants and privies from taking any disciplinary action against the 1st – 4th defendants (with me and the authentic Ogun State PDP Chairman, Engr. Adebayo Dayo as the 1st and 4th defendants).
” The directive was on account of any actions and/or conduct or steps taken by them individually and jointly to make the plaintiff abide by its constitution and observe democratic principles in all its dealings with the 1st – 4th defendants.”
The lawmaker said the purported expulsion did not have anything to do with him  or any of his associates.
He said, “It is instructive that the Federal High Court as per the Honourable Justice I.N. Buba on the 24th June, 2016, granted an order.
” An order which banned the PDP from impeding the functions of the Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led Ogun State PDP Exco until the four year tenure which they have been elected is spent.
“That the State Exco is to remain in office until 2020.
“I and my associates are fully in the PDP whether anybody likes it or not. We will continue to operate as PDP members, senator and exco.”
The PDP on Monday announced the expulsion of Sen. Buruji Kashamu from the party.
Others expelled from the party are Samiu Sodipo, Dayo Adebayo and Segun Seriki.
