The Federal Road Safety Corps on Thursday confirmed the killing of one of its officials by unidentified gunmen at its Tsafe unit command in Zamfara State.

The Public Education Officer and spokesman of the Corps, Bisi Kazeem, who gave the confirmation, said another official was missing following the attack.

A source had earlier said the gunmen, numbering about 20, stormed the premises on motorcycles at about 10am and opened fire on the FRSC personnel.

The source said: “There was confusion as sounds of sporadic gunshots rented the air, while the road safety officials around scampered for safety in different directions.

“However, one of the officials was unlucky as he was gunned down by the attackers.”

According to him, one of the gunmen was killed by soldiers who quickly mobilised to the scene, while the rest escaped into the bush abandoning their motorcycles.

When contacted, Kazeem said:‎ “It is true that our command in Tsafe, Zamfara State was attacked this morning.

“A Deputy Route Commander of the FRSC was killed by the hoodlums while other staff escaped with one still missing.”

Kazeem said the police and the Army had taken over the matter.

According to him, the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, has condemned the “unprovoked” attack, but sued for calm among officials and the general public.

Kazeem said: “He is confident that both the police and the Army will bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The Corps Marshal has also reassured officers and men of the corps of their security and safety anywhere in the country.”

Mexican President Enrique Nieto on Wednesday declared three days of national mourning in the wake of a 7.1-magnitude earthquake which has left over 200 people dead.

Nieto made the announcement on Twitter, saying the days of mourning were in honour of the victims.
“Mexico shares in your grief,” the president said.

In an earlier statement, he urged the people of Mexico to remain united in the face of the challenge.

“This earthquake is a hard and very painful test for our country, but we Mexicans have learned to respond with commitment and a spirit of solidarity,” he said.

The magnitude 7.1 quake, which killed at least 94 people in the capital alone, struck 32 years to the day after a 1985 earthquake that killed thousands.

Mexico is also still reeling from a powerful tremor that killed nearly 100 people in the south of the country less than two weeks ago.

As rescue efforts continued at a school, a facility for children aged 3 to 14, emergency crews, volunteers and bystanders toiled elsewhere using dogs, cameras and heat-seeking equipment to detect survivors.

Reinforcements also began to arrive from countries, including Panama, Israel and Chile, local media reported.

Hundreds of neighbours and emergency workers spent the night pulling rubble from the ruins of the school with their bare hands under the glare of floodlights.

Three survivors were found at around midnight as volunteer rescue teams known as “moles” crawled deep under the rubble.

“She is also alleged to have subjected her to all manners of degrading treatments for over seven years. The lawyer is a suspect who has made useful statement to the police and as soon as investigation is concluded, she will be charged to court for proper prosecution,” Zaki added.

It was, however, gathered that the victim, who was said to be sick when she was rescued by the police, had been receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Port Harcourt.
