The Police Command in Lagos State says it has arrested two suspects who were allegedly involved in rituals at Ijanikin area of Lagos.

The command’s Spokesman, CSP Chike Oti, said in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos that the third suspect was, however, lynched by a mob before the police got to the scene.

Oti said the suspects were allegedly found with a decomposing human body under the Cele Nicer Bridge, Ijanikin.

He said the police had received information that a woman (name withheld), was found inside a tunnel under the bridge with a decomposing human body.

“The discovery attracted an irate mob, which nearly lynched her save for the quick intervention of policemen drafted from Ijanikin Divisional Police headquarters to the scene.

“The rescue team thereafter searched the tunnel and arrested a suspect believed to be an accomplice of the female suspects.

“The third suspect, who escaped from the tunnel to avoid being arrested, was caught by an irate mob who set him ablaze.

The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, had directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ijanikin to cordon off the scene to ensure that the remains were not tampered with for forensic examination.

“The experts are expected at the scene Tuesday (today) for scientific examination of the corpse, the tunnel and other exhibits found therein,” he said.

Oti quoted Edgal as describing the incident as regrettable as it occurred in spite of the various town hall meetings he had held to sensitise communities in the state to the evil of jungle justice.

“They killed one of the suspects who might have been very useful in the ongoing investigation instead of handing him over to the police,” Edgal said.

He warned that anybody found to have indulged in such an act in the future would be arrested and charged for murder to serve as a deterrent to others.

Chief Executive, Connected Development (CODE), Mr Hamzat Lawal (2nd, R); assisted by Chairman, Nigerian Young Professional Forum (NYPF), Mr Moses Siasia (R); presenting a Petition Letter to the representative of the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, at the EFCC Office in Abuja on Tuesday (28/8/18).

A youth body, Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF) and Connected Development (CODE) have submitted a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged 3.8billion dollars contract awarded to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).
The petition was titled, “Request for Presidential Inquisition into the Engineering Procurement and Construction of the Total Egina Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) Facility by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).’’
The petition was jointly signed by the Chairman of NYPF, Mr Moses Siasia and the Executive Director of Connected Development, Mr Hamzat Lawal, on Tuesday in Abuja.
The signatories said that the forum had discovered a monumental fraud going on in the oil and gas industry and the nonchalant attitude of foreign contractors to heed to local content laws.
“We have a situation where 3.8 billion dollars project called Egina project, was not able to meet expectations particularly to employ young Nigerian professionals,’’ Lawal said.
They said they are concerned over the 3.8billion dollar Egina project awarded to Samsung Heavy Industries which failed to employ over 30,000 Nigerian young people working in Nigeria in line with local content law.
“As we speak, young people were deprived of that project but instead, the project was taken to South Korea where young South Koreans got the job instead.’’
The signatories said that Samsung was asking for variation with no local content element on those variations.
They said Nigeria could not be spending such billions on a foreign firm without giving Nigerian young professionals the opportunity to be part of the project.
The youth forum also alleged that the company has “no physical structure in terms of office.’’
They said that what the firm claimed to be their office was just where air conditioners were sold.
“We cannot be giving that kind of jobs to portfolio companies who have no good structures as office, who are here to pack money and develop their countries,’’ Siasia said.
Among the requests made by the youth forum is for the EFCC to investigate the irregularities surrounding the SHI and Samsung Korea and their involvement in the Egina project.
They request that Samsung Heavy Industries Korea be given maximum five per cent fine applicable for local content violations of their contract.
That SHI Korea and SMH Nigeria be blacklisted from participating in Nigeria projects for 10 years.
They also request that for every variation claimed by Samsung, the company should be made to pay minimum of 20 per cent to Nigerian companies involved in the Egina contract, among others.
Responding, the head of Media and publicity in the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren thanked the youth forum for their patriotism and belief in the work of the commission to combat fraud.
He, however, said that their petition was only an allegation, adding that the commission would do everything in its power to look into their petition and carry out necessary investigations.

Air pollution causes a “huge” reduction in intelligence, according to new research.
The Guardian reported that the study suggests the damage to society of toxic air is far deeper than the well-known impacts on physical health.
The research was conducted in China but is relevant across the world, with 95 per cent of the world’s population breathing unsafe air.
It found that high pollution levels led to significant drops in test scores in language and arithmetic, with the average impact equivalent to having lost a year of the person’s education.
“Polluted air can cause everyone to reduce their level of education by one year, which is huge,” said Xi Chen at Yale School of Public Health in the United States, a member of the research team.
“But we know the effect is worse for the elderly, especially those over 64, and for men, and for those with low education.
“If we calculate [the loss] for those, it may be a few years of education.” Pollution also increases the risk of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, the study suggests.
Described as an invisible killer, air pollution causes an estimated seven million premature deaths a year worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation. LR News

One of the buildings at the Police College Enugu with roof and windows all gone

In a bid to get firsthand information to help make the Police force more effective, the newly inaugurated Board of the Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken a tour of Enugu state.
This is even as they have secured a donation of N20 million from a Business man and Philanthropist, Arthur Eze, to renovate the Police College in Enugu, which they said was in a sorry state.
The commissioners who went on the tour included: Dr. Nkemka Jombo-Ofo the host commissioner in Enugu, Barrister Rommy Mom, Hajia Najatu Muhammed and Mr. Austin Braimoh, who were all recently confirmed as Commissioners and sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The visit to Arthur Eze followed an earlier visit to the Police College where members of the board, some of whom were almost moved to tears, saw for themselves, the sorry state of infrastructure in the college.

The board members accompanied by the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Danmallam Mohammed, described as shocking the poor state of the Nigerian Police College.
They wondered how such a college meant for the training of new recruits could be so dilapidated: the hostels were without roofs, no water, women had their shower outside while the bushes nearby had been converted to their toilet.
While narrating the state of the college to the Businessman, they pledged to draw the attention of stakeholders to such an eyesore and promised to give the college a new look in order to increase its capacity to train more students.
Apparently moved by the state of the College, the Businessman handed a cheque of N20 million to the Commissioner of Police in Enugu state for the renovation of the college.

He thanked members of the Police Service Commission for bringing the matter to his attention, while describing the college as one of the nation’s leading police institutions in the past.
He berated previous members of the PSC for neglecting such an important institution.
Responding, Barr. Rommy Mom described Prince Eze’s donation as timely and thanked him for granting the commission such audience even at short notice.
He promised that the donation would be properly utilized in giving the college the befitting face-lift it deserved.
Our correspondent reports that the board members began their tour first with a visit to the Governor of Enugu state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who was visibly elated to receive them.
While welcoming the members, Ugwuanyi described the job of the Police Service Commission as a thankless job, stated that with the quality of personalities appointed to the commission, he believed that a number of issues affecting the Nigerian Police Force would be effectively resolved.
He called on the commission to see him as a partner in the commission’s mandate to build a police force the Nigerian people could be proud of.
He donated a vehicle to the commission and a building to serve as the office of the Police Service Commission in Enugu State.
Ugwuanyi also pledged to sponsor the first strategy retreat for the police service commissioners to be held in Enugu.
Responding the commissioner representing the Chairman of Police Service Commission, Austin Braimoh described Governor Ugwuanyi as an astute administrator and thanked him for his kind gesture.
He noted that the Police Service Commission would continue to confer with the governor on the  commission’s efforts to build a model police force.

About 30,000 metric tonnes of cocoa have been trapped at the Apapa gridlock on its way to the Apapa port, according to exporters.

The Cocoa Exporters Association of Nigeria on Monday said that 1,760 tons of Cocoa butter and cake are held up in the traffic which has been a source of concern to motorists, residents as well as importers and exporters.

Traders said, as a result of the development, farm-gate cocoa prices have dropped, while purchases have slowed.

Nigeria is currently ranked fifth alongside Cameroon, among the world’s biggest cocoa producers, with the international cocoa organisation estimating its 2017 to 2018 output at 240,000 metric tonnes.

The Apapa is one of Africa’s biggest port city but the current road repairs hinder access to ships for export.
