VIPs don’t respect airport rules in Nigeria – ATSSAN Chairman

Mr Samuel Wuyep, Chairman, Air Transport Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN), Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja Branch, has appealed to top Nigerian Government officials and other VIPs to always obey airport laws.
Wuyep, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday in Abuja, said that airport staff were often being attacked by top government officials, who usually break rules.
He said that Nigerian elites, who use airport found it difficult to observe standard procedures and practices as it was done globally, adding that VIPs often feel offended when asked to observe rules.
ATSSAN Chairman disclosed that many top officials saw it as an affront on their personality when asked to remove their shoes and belt before passing through security scanners by a security officer.
According to him, they don’t like to respect simple instructions of aviation procedures.
“They don’t always like to remove their shoes and belts as the screening procedure demands and anytime you ask them to do so based on standard operational procedure, they would feel you are embarrassing them.
“So, we are faced with a lot of difficulties while trying to enforce standard aviation laws.
“Right from outside when you are coming in, the traffic situation is not too good, motorists would always want to by-pass the queue while coming in and they may want to park at wrong places instead of designated parking areas.
“Once our aviation security officials try to correct them that the parking was not good, they would feel embarrassed because they feel that at their levels nobody should talk to them.
“They might even use the protection units of the various agencies, from the armed forces and the police to harass those people that are enforcing the laws,’’ he said.
Wuyep also accused the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), of not doing enough to protect and defend its officers, who often face assault from the so-called VIPs.
He said that some the VIPs often raise false allegations against the workers thereby subjecting them to unjust punishment, adding that this situation and fear always dampen the morale of the officers.
According to him, at the end of the day, you would find out that the morale of the worker is gradually diminishing because nobody stands for them when they are doing their work.
“There was a recent case of a security officer being humiliated by a minister as the officer saw him with his convoy not moving in accordance with the designed traffic movement at the airport and the officer was trying to correct the convoy.
“Eventually, they turned out against him and he was almost sent parking from the job.
“A lot of things are going on that we want the public to know about that we are not finding it easy to enforce basic aviation laws.
“If this is not corrected, the dream of meeting up with the global standards will be a mirage.
“I am appealing to the authorities concerned to at least to give us some little privileges and immunity and also ensure that those that break the laws are prosecuted to serve as deterrent to other airport users.
“Most times, the victim or whoever is involved with such situation is left alone to carry his or her own cross,” he said.
Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, said it was not entirely correct that the management did not defend or protect the staff whenever they had issues with airport users.
Yakubu, while acknowledging the fact that there were instances when some VIPs assaulted airport staff for doing their jobs.
He said that the management had taken certain actions against those involved.
She said that the management had never at any time allowed any member of staff to be molested at their duty post without fighting for them.
“It is not entirely correct that the management is not doing enough to protect the airport security officers.
“Yes, there instances where officers were being assaulted by the VIPs at the toll gate and the management had to rise to the defense of the staff in Abuja.
“The Airport Manager and myself had to even meet the Airport Commandant over the matter.
“So there is never anytime we hear of any attack on the airport staff that we did not respond because it is the responsibility of the management to protect and defend its staff.
“At the same time, the management has emphasized that every member of staff should operate within the laid down rules at their duty posts,’’ she said.

No fewer than 30 million children in Nigeria are at the risk of losing their identity, if nothing was not done to urgently check the trend, the National Population Commission (NPC), has said.
He said that no fewer than 85 million children under the age of five were not registered at birth in Africa.
The Ondo State Director of NPC, Mr Olatunsun Falusi, stated this at the launch of a media campaign on birth registration in the state.
The event was organised by the commission in collaboration with UNICEF and the EU.
Falusi said that only 44 per cent of Africa’s births were registered and that only eight per cent of children under five were registered.
Falusi also said that eight out of 10 countries with the lowest level of birth registration were in sub-Saharan Africa and that Nigeria had the largest population of unregistered children.
He also said that no fewer than one million of the unregistered children were born in the state.
“The number of children under five in Nigeria is projected to increase from 32 million in 2015 to 58 million by 2050.
“At the same time, the number of children under 18 in Nigeria is projected to increase from 93 million in 2015 to 191 million in 2050,” he said.
The population boss said that the birth certificate issued by the commission remained the only officially recognised evidence of age for Nigerian children under 18.
According to him, “Getting every child in Ondo registered is not just an option but an absolute necessity in our quest to deliver to the nation an accurate, reliable, acceptable and verifiable demographic data.”
Also, the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladelusi, advocated a government policy that would make it a punishable offence for parents that failed to register their child at birth.
Mr Bode Famose, the state Director of the National Orientation Agency, further charged stakeholders to take advantage of the media campaign to get every child in the state registered.
Famose urged parents to avoid double registration.
In her own remarks, Dr. Banke Olorunfemi, the Chief Medical Director of Mother and Child in the state, advised parents and guardians to adequately safeguard the birth record of their children for future reference.

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has officially endorsed former vice President Atiku Abubakar to run for the Presidency of Nigeria come 2019.
Obasanjo disclosed this while briefing newsmen after a meeting with Atiku, leaders of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and others key stakeholders in his country home in Abeokuta.
Obasanjo said that he was giving his blessings to Atiku because he (Atiku) had ‘re-discovered and re-positioned himself’and as such had earned his (Obasanjo’s) forgiveness.
He said that Atiku had re positioned himself enough to now enjoy his support in the next election, adding that Atiku is the “the next President of Nigeria”.
Read full text below:
“Let me start by congratulating President-to-be, Atiku Abubakar, for his success at the recent PDP Primary and I took note of his gracious remarks in his acceptance speech that it all started here.
“Yes, when it started, it was meant for Atiku to succeed Obasanjo.  In the presence of these distinguished leaders of goodwill today, let me say it openly that we have reviewed what went wrong on the side of Atiku.
“And in all honesty, my former Vice-President has re-discovered and re-positioned himself.  As I have repeatedly said, it is not so much what you did against me that was the issue but what you did against the Party, the Government and the country.
“I took the stand I had taken based on the character and attributes you exhibited in the position you found yourself.
“I strongly believe that I was right. It was in the overall interest of everyone and everything to take such a position.
“From what transpired in the last couple of hours or so, you have shown remorse; you have asked for forgiveness and you have indicated that you have learnt some good lessons and you will mend fences and make amends as necessary and as desirable.
“Whenever or wherever you might have offended me, as a Christian who asks for God’s forgiveness of my sins and inadequacies on daily basis, I forgive and I sincerely advise you to learn from the past and do what is right and it will be well with you.
“Obviously, you have mended fences with the Party and fully reconciled with the Party.
“That’s why today, you are the Presidential Candidate of the Party.  In addition to appreciating all that the Party has done for you, may I advise you to work together with all those who contested for the Party’s flag with you as a team for your campaign.
“There are still areas, nationally and internationally, where you have to mend fences and make amends.  You will know how to handle what is already out and what may yet be put out by the opposition.  But, I am convinced that if you continue with the attitude that brought you here with these distinguished leaders of goodwill, with remorse and contrite heart, the rest of the coast within and outside the country can be cleared.  And if there is anything I can do and you want me to do in that respect, I will do.
“I am sure with the right attitude for change where necessary, and by putting lessons learned by you to work, you will get the understanding, cooperation, support and mandate – all at the national level.
“With Nigerians voting for you, it will mean that you secure their forgiveness and regain their confidence. It will be with the hope or assurance of a Paul on the road to Damascus Conversion. After all, change and conversion are of man. I believe that with a contrite heart, change is possible in everybody’s life and situation.
“For me, relatively and of all the aspirants in the PDP, you have the widest and greatest exposure, experience, outreach and possibly the best machinery and preparation for seeing the tough and likely dirty campaign ahead through. From what I personally know of you, you have capacity to perform better than the incumbent. You surely understand the economy better; you have business experience, which can make your administration business-friendly and boost the economy and provide jobs.
“You have better outreach nationally and internationally and that can translate to better management of foreign affairs.  You are more accessible and less inflexible and more open to all parts of the country in many ways.  As Pastor Bakare, one-time running mate of the incumbent President said, “You are a wazobia man.”  And that should help you in confronting the confrontable and shunning nepotism.
“As you know, along the road to where you are today, many leaders and ordinary people cooperated and overtly and covertly worked hard.  On your behalf, I thank them all.  May their coast continue to be expanded.  And when you become Nigerian President which, insha-Allah, you will be, remember what we did together in government – we ran an administration by Nigerians for all Nigerians where merit and performance count more than blood relationship, friendship or kith and kin.  Although some time and ground have been lost, you should endeavour to start from where we stopped and recover some lost ground, if not time.
“Please uphold truth, integrity, principles, morality and fight corruption, crimes and insurgency.  The fundamental law of the land, our constitution must be scrupulously defended. I make one demand and one demand on you today, I need you to say before God and man that you will always remain irrevocably committed to upholding ALL the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the whole country will remain your single indivisible constituency.
“Constitutionalism, popular participation and inclusiveness are pre-conditions for reversing the deficits of the past three and half years. They will ensure abiding faith in our indivisibility, oneness and faith in the survival of all against none.
“The fundamentals for our development, economic growth and progress are hard and soft infrastructure.  Remember to always give adequate places in your administration to our youth and women.
“All the authorities involved with the preparation, all processes and conduct of the election must ensure that the election is free, fair and credible.
“Once again, congratulations and I wish you well.  My distinguished brothers and leaders of goodwill, thank you for making this happen.  I will now count on you to encourage all hands to be on the deck to take Nigeria to the level God has created it to be – autopilot level.”

The Senate on Thursday passed the sum of N234 billion for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the 2018 budget.

The figure comprises the N189 billion requested by INEC for the conduct the 2019 general election, and N45 billion provided for the commission under statutory transfer.
The lawmakers approved that the N189 billion be vired from both recurrent and capital components of the Special Intervention Programme captured in the Service Wide Vote of the 2018 Appropriation Act.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the passage of the budget followed the presentation of the report of the Committee on Appropriation chaired by Sen. Danjuma Goje.
Goje said that the committee considered President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for N242 billion for INEC and security agencies to conduct the election.
He said the executive allocated N143 billion for INEC from virement in the 2018 budget without specifying the source of the virement.
The committee, according to him, recommended that the money be vied from the Special Intervention Programme under the Service Wide Vote of the 2018 Appropriation Act.
Goje said in making the recommendation, the committee took into account report of the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on INEC which met with the commission during the just-ended National Assembly recess.
He said the final report that would cover the security agencies’ components of the N242 billion election’s budget would be presented in the next legislative day.
Commenting on the report, the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, observed that Buhari’s letter to the Senate on election funding came holistically, comprising the requests of INEC and the security agencies.
“The issue of INEC has been settled, and we are told that the Committee on Appropriation will be meeting with the security agencies this afternoon.
“This being an interim report, I would like to suggest this report and the report on the request of the security agencies be consolidated into one report, more so when it came as a single report from the president.
“This is important so that we have a single report next week and be able to pass it as a single request, because if we separate it now it will cause confusion.’’
However, other senators, including Kabiru Gaya, Ahmed Lawan and Ibrahim Gobir, countered Ekweremadu and called for immediate passage of the INEC budget due to its urgency.
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, thereafter put the committee’s recommendations to a voice vote and it was approved by the lawmakers.
