Former INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega

The former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has advised political parties to improve their structure and scope of internal democracy ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Recalling the recent violence witnessed during various congresses in the country, the former INEC chairman said danger may be inevitable if parties are unable to properly manage their internal affairs.

He said this while delivering a lecture on Monday in Abuja as part of the 2018 Democracy Day celebration.

“The first issue of concern and a major challenge is the issue of violence and there is no better illustration this than what has happened in many of the recent party congresses and really, this portends danger.

“If political parties cannot organize their internal elections peacefully, then how can they engage with other parties with civility in the general elections so its very very important we improve our systemic mechanisms of addressing violence and conflicts relating to election and in particular, improving the scope of internal democracy within political parties.

“We may be running out of time but we must try harder and do everything possible within the time available to us before the next general election,” he said.

Also in the lecture titled Peace Building and Good Governance for Sustainable Development in Nigeria, Jega said cases of hate speeches and delay in the passage of the electoral legal framework are capable of eroding credibility and threatening the elections next year.

The former INEC chairman also took a swipe at some members of the National Assembly while addressing the issue of bribery and corruption.

“Many of the chief executives that I have spoken with (and I know only a few), have stories to tell, particularly about the issue of bribe giving and bribe taking when members of the National Assembly pursue so-called committee work and oversight responsibilities.

“This is well-known, everyone knows it, it is being said but nothing seems to be done about it,” he said.

Also present at the event was President Muhammadu Buhari who assured Nigerians of a more secure and prosperous nation.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Reps Yakubu Dogara; Minister of Mines and Steel, Dr Kayode Fayemi; Minister of Communications, Otunba Adebayo Shittu, APC Chieftain, General Lawrence Onoja, SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha among others, were also in attendance.

Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila

Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has triggered a barrage of attacks to himself after he surprised his wife, Yemisi, with a gift of Mercedes G-Wagon, selling for between N75m and N100m in Nigeria.
The gift on 27 May was to commemorate the wife’s 50th birthday.

Like Davido, who bought his girlfriend a N22m Porsche, with a plate number ‘ASSURANCE’, 56 year-old Gbajabiamila also named the gift ‘ASSURANCE’.
A Mercedes Benz G-Wagon has a factory price of about $120,000, depending on its trim type.
But in Nigeria, it goes for between N70m and N360m.
However, the lawmaker has opened himself to attacks in the social media for the gesture, first for making the gesture public and second, for the high cost of the gift.
“He could still have given same car without the fanfare”, wrote Temitope Ajayi on Facebook.
“Bad! How can you do that in such a country where people find it difficult to eat and pay bills? I’m sure there are people in his extended family who need help… Insensitivity, selfishness and ostentation. Shit!”,said Marufh Bello, also on Facebook.
And Julius Ogunro added: “The question is: where did he get the money from? Is it his legitimate earnings? Or did he ‘scheme’ the system? Whatever the answer, it is very bad, and sad that a public official without any other legitimate earnings can afford such luxury. God help us!”
Gbajabiamila represents Surulere, Lagos in the House of Representatives. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress.
He was first elected in 2003. He was re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2015. Now he is working getting a fifth term.
He was educated at Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos, King William’s College on the Isle of Man, United Kingdom, John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois, United States, and the University of Lagos in Lagos. LR News

NYS boss, Richard Ndubai

The theft of $99 million has led to the arrest of head of Kenya’s National Youth Service, Mr. Richard Ndubai.
In spite of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s pledges to stamp out graft when he was first elected in 2013, critics say he has been slow to pursue top officials.
They added that only big-name convictions will break what they call a culture of impunity.
Privately-owned Citizen Television and K24 TV said the youth agency official, Ndubai, had been arrested, along with an unspecified number of officials.
Kenyan media have said 10 billion shillings (99 million dollars) had been stolen through fictitious invoices, and multiple payments on one supplier invoice, at the NYS.
The Media could not contact Ndubai, who is in custody, for comment, and was unable to immediately trace contacts for his lawyer to seek comment.
The reports have dismayed many Kenyans, particularly as they come in the wake of a 2015 scam at the agency, which aims to equip Kenya’s young people with key skills and help create jobs.
Last week, investigators summoned more than 40 people, including Ndubai, for questioning over the lost funds.
Kenyatta has blamed the slow progress in tackling corruption on the lethargy of some government agencies charged with rooting out graft.
According to The Star newspaper of Kenya, the Kirinyanga-born Ndubai was a former permanent secretary.
He holds a PhD of Philosophy in Performance Contracting, Measurement and Public Service Delivery from the University of Nairobi.
Ndubai also holds a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA. He did his Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting – Honors) at the University of Nairobi.
Since 1977 where he started his career as Sales Tax Inspector at the Ministry of Finance, he had risen through the ranks.
In 1982, he worked as a Senior Principal Inspector of State Corporations at Office of the President before moving to the position of Principal deputy director of Personnel Management at Office of the President in 2002.
He worked as the Secretary, Performance Contracting at Office of the President from 2008 when he was promoted to Permanent Secretary, Public Sector Reforms & Performance Contracting, Office of the Prime Minister.($1=101.0000 Kenyan shillings) Reuters/LR News
