The Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Nuhu Gidado, has resigned.

Mr Gidado informed Governor Muhammed Abubakar of his decision in a letter dated May 16. A copy of the letter was seen by Channels Television on Wednesday.

In the letter, Mr Gidado explained that his decision was based on his commitment to serve for only a single term as deputy governor of the state.

“Ordinarily, I should have remained up to the end of the tenure, but, with the currently dampened spirit and waning zeal as it relates to my official engagements, my continued stay will not be fair and truthful to you as my brother and leader,” he wrote.

The deputy governor also believes that staying on in office will be unfair to the system and his conscience.

Furthermore, he reminded the governor that during their meeting on April 19th he had informed him that he was thinking about stepping aside.

Mr Gidado thanked Governor Abubakar and the people of the state for the opportunity to serve as deputy governor of the state.

Jungle Justice: a suspected criminal about to be burnt to death by a mob

The House of Representatives has called on Nigeria Police Force to investigate the spate of jungle justice and mob killings across the country and prosecute perpetrators of such acts.
This was sequel to a unanimous adoption of a motion by Rep. Ezekiel Adaji (Benue-PDP) at the plenary on Wednesday.
Moving the motion earlier, Adaji had pointed out that democracy which Nigeria operated was anchored on respect for the rule of law.
He said that democracy was also predicated on constitutionalism, order, justice and fairness.
The legislator said that the Nigerian law had adequate provisions that empowered law enforcement agencies to enforce and implement all laws.
He said that the idea was to make the country orderly and to ensure the fundamental human rights of citizens as enshrined in the Constitution and other international laws were respected.
According to him, mob killings and jungle justice are the consequences of failure of criminal justice, the failure of society to apply uniform and equal standards.
Adaji said that irrational human instincts and impulses, and the failure of criminal justice institutions and agencies to prevent its occurrence were equally responsible.
He blamed the situation on the failure of relevant institutions to punish those engaged in the heinous practices.
The lawmaker said that some people across the country who had suffered from one crime or the other now accepted lynching or mob justice as the best model to exert their vengeance.
He said that this had rendered the law enforcement agencies in the country ineffective.
The legislator expressed concern over the recent loss of innocent lives as a result of an upsurge in the spate of extra-judicial killings.
Referring to a report of Amnesty International, he put the figure of victims of mob justice from January 1 to March 31, 2018 at 29.
He said that incessant application of mob attacks targeting crime suspects may have gained motivation from the criminal practice of extra-judicial killings by virtually all the law enforcement agencies in the country.
According to the lawmaker, the police are principally most guilty of employing such crude tactics as extra-judicial execution of suspects of crime in their custody which had become a widely tolerated practice.
For the health and safety of the society, he recommended that those who felt they were above the law were made to face the full weight of the law.
He said that eradicating mob actions or jungle justice was necessary in eliminating the chance of Nigeria witnessing impunity and anarchy in the society.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the house, Mr Yakubu Dogara, mandated the Committees on Police Affairs, Federal Judiciary and Justice to ensure full compliance with the resolution. LR News

Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, has expressed confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari will emerge victorious in the 2019 general elections.

The minister made this known on Tuesday while inspecting the dualisation of the Ibadan-Ilorin road in Oyo state.

“We are so confident that our re-election would be easy,” he said.

“Whether it is in terms of infrastructure, whether it is in terms of social intervention, every day we are working for the people.”

According to Mohammed, the Buhari administration has kept its promises to the people of Nigeria.

He also believes that the President has not lost his goodwill because of the massive projects he says it is embarking on.

In the area of infrastructure, the minister assured the public that there are enough funds to ensure that the road projects are completed at the appropriate time.

He said in addition to the Presidential Infrastructure Fund, the Federal Government also floated a N100 billion Sukuk Bond, which has been shared to the Six Geo-political Zones for intervention in critical infrastructure.

He further stated that the Federal Government would not relent in its promises despite criticism from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Our response to critics is not to exchange banters,” he said.

“There is only one way you can get the electorates to vote for you – by keeping your promises to them and by embarking on projects that touch their lives and this is what we are doing and that is why we are so confident.

The Minister said the road remains very significant because it’s the gateway to the South-Western part of the country from the North and has been under severe strain from heavy-duty vehicles since the collapse of the railways.

On his part, the Federal Controller of Works in Oyo State, Mr Omotayo Awosanya, said the project, which was awarded in 2010, is now 58% completed due to the commitment of the present administration to delivering the project.

“When it was initially awarded, there were no proper funding until this present regime when funding improved. We are lucky this project is benefitting from Sukuk Funds in addition to what the budget can provide,” he said.

Another of such projects which Mr Mohammed pointed out is in the area of social intervention.

He said the Federal Government’s school feeding programme caters to about eight million children across primary schools.

“We are working for the common man in this country. As of today, we feed 8.2 million children in primary schools over Nigeria. In the process, we employ 87,000 cooks.

“This feeding programme in about 24 states covers 62,000 primary schools,” he added.

Mahathir Mohamad in Malaysia PM at 92

Malaysia has slashed salaries of ministers by 10 per cent and also cut public spending.
The decision was taken to control spending as the new government deals with high-level debt, the 92-year-old leader said exceeded more than one trillion ringgit (251.5 billion U.S. dollars).
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Wednesday the measures at the first cabinet meeting which was attended by more than a dozen of the newly sworn-in ministers.
“We are concerned about the country’s financial problem,” Mahathir told reporters after the meeting.
Mahathir said he will not force other senior civil servants to follow suit, but he said they can do so if they want to contribute towards reducing the cost of the running this country.
Since taking power after the election victory, Mahathir has been focusing on implementing the commitments promised during the campaign, including abolishing the six-per cent goods and services taxes, which the rating firm Moody’s said could narrow the country’s tax base and strain fiscal strength.
At the news conference, Mahathir said Malaysia’s debt is around 65 per cent of the country’s GDP.
Aside from the pay cut, he has been advocating other measures, including forming a small cabinet, downsizing the government and recovering some assets related to the 1MDB state fund overseas.
He said the Land Public Transport Commission will be disbanded, with its previous functions placed under the transport ministry, while several other “non-essential” institutions will be dissolved.
Besides, he touched on the review process of some mega projects, saying the government is studying which will be scraped and which will be continued.
In addition, he said the government is reviewing the contract for the search of the missing MH370 flight.
“If we find that it is not necessary, we will not renew (the contract),” he said. Xinhua/LR News

Lagos first lady, Bolanle Ambode

The Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Bolanle Ambode, has raised alarm certain person posing as her representative to extort money from members of the public.

Mrs Ambode on Tuesday condemned the criminal activity noting that the individual has been utilizing social media platforms to disguise as her representative defrauding people, alerting Nigerians to be wary of such entreaties from any person.

In a statement signed by the Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Mrs. Folashade Kadiri says, “The attention of Her Excellency, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, wife of the Governor of Lagos State, has been drawn to the criminal activities of a certain individual, masquerading as her representative, for the purpose of extorting money from unsuspecting persons, using the social media platform.

“Her Excellency wishes to state very emphatically, that she has no links whatsoever with such fraudulent element, neither has she authorized anyone to act on her behalf in questionable circumstances.”

Mrs Ambode therefore urged members of the public to be vigilant and avoid dealings with shadowy figures, purporting to be representing her, for motives that are self-serving and clearly dubious, while calling on them to report to the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the unscrupulous individual behind such nefarious act could be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
