The Malian headquarters of an anti-terror task force, the G5 Sahel, came under attack on Friday, killing six persons  and leaving many injured, according to a provisional toll.
A suicide bomber tried to penetrate the base at Sevare in central Mali, according to a security source, while a local orange seller, Haoussa Haidara, said “there was a huge blast” followed by gunfire which lasted more than an hour.
It is the first attack on the headquarters of the joint force, set up in 2017 to roll back jihadist insurgents and criminal groups in the vast, unstable Sahel region.
It came three days before a meeting in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott between French President Emmanuel Macron and the heads of the G5 Sahel states to discuss progress made by the force.
Six people were killed in the attack, according to a hospital and a military source, giving an interim toll.
“We transported the bodies and the injured to the hospital, but we don’t know whether some of the injured have died in hospital. There are six dead on the ground,” the military source told AFP.
Some of the injured were transported to Mopti’s Somino Dolo hospital in the regional capital.
Residents in Sevare hid inside their homes, according to Bouba Bathily, a trader who sheltered from the gunfire in his house.
“Assistance came from everywhere, we’re not hearing gunshots at the moment,” Moussa Kalossi, a watchman in a hotel near the camp, told AFP.
The arrival of military support was confirmed by a Malian military source.
Launched with French backing in 2017, the G5 Sahel aims at pooling 5,000 troops from five nations — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.
It was projected to be fully up and running in March, but its deployment has faced delays and equipment worries.
France intervened militarily in Mali in 2013 to help government forces drive Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists out of the north.
But large tracts of the country remain lawless despite a peace accord signed with ethnic Tuareg leaders in mid-2015 aimed at isolating the jihadists. The violence has also spilled over into both Burkina Faso and Niger.
Earlier Friday, French military headquarters said that troops from its so-called Barkhane mission in Mali had killed or captured 15 jihadists on June 22 in a joint operation with local forces.
The clash took place in a woodland area of the Inabelbel region, southeast of Timbuktu, it said in a statement.
A group of about 20 jihadists were attacked using helicopters and jet fighter support after they were spotted by Malian commandos, it said.

He was arraigned on Friday along with one Modupe Adetokunbo, the Director-General of the PDP Campaign Organization in the state during the last general elections.

They were both brought before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on three counts of money laundering to the tune of N500 million.

In the charge, the EFCC‘s Deputy Chief Detective Superintendent, Ekene Iheanacho alleged that Clement Faboyede, Modupe Adetokunbo and others at large had, on or about March 27, 2015, conspired amongst themselves to accept cash payment in the sum of N500million from one Owolanke Micheal, without going through a financial institution.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 1, of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act 1 of 2012) and punishable under section 16(2) of the same Act.

The defence counsel, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Eyitayo Jegede, however urged the court to admit the defendants to bail.

Justice Saliu Saidu has asked him to file a formal application for bail and ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody till then.

More than 2,000 people living with HIV in Kano and Katsina States are expected to benefit from an initiative by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) in collaboration with the Association of Community Pharmacists in Nigeria (ACPN) to ease access to HIV medications.
The IHVN Assistant Director, Pharmacy, Mr Yohanna Avong stated this at the launch of the project in Kano on Thursday.
He said with the initiative, adult patients who are stable on HIV medications and not pregnant, could be referred from hospitals to get drug refills from trained community pharmacists of their choice in their communities instead of frequent trips to overcrowded health facilities for drug pick-up.
“Public hospitals that are providing antiretroviral therapy are consistently being congested or they have a high volume of patients.
“The World Health Organization has recommended the use of structures within the community to provide HIV medications.
“Some patients travel very long distances to the hospital and this affects their adherence to treatment and overall well-being,” he said.
Avong explained that over 3, 000 people living with HIV in the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa States took part in the initiative with great success prompting an extension of the program.
“We have discovered that because we are removing the hardship that people go through in order to get drugs at the hospital level, they are doing very well with low viral load.”
Assistant Director of Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria and Head of Kano Branch, S.S Chiroma said that the project was novel one and would benefit both patients and community pharmacists.
“For the patient, the access will increase while for the caregiver, it also gives him the opportunity to have experience in antiretroviral therapy which will lead to better service to the patient.”
Earlier in a welcome address, Director of Public Relations of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, Peter Illya expressed his joy with the initiative saying that the goal was to deliver a HIV free generation to Nigerians.
A Community Pharmacist from Geral-Jo-Calene Pharmacy in Sabon Gari, Kano, Mrs. Agatha Nwachukwu said that the initiative was a welcome development.
“We are happy that community pharmacists are being incorporated into the HIV program. We have now been trained such that a lot of things that we did not know, we now know,” she said.
Abbas Musa from Kainuwa Best Global Pharmacy in Funtua said that he looked forward to the challenge that the job entailed and the opportunity to help people living with HIV in the community.
“It will bring job satisfaction for myself, help impact the patient positively and the community in general.”
NAN reports that the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria was established in 2004 as a local organisation to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in Nigeria through the development of infrastructure, care, prevention, and support for people living with and those affected by the disease.

U.S. aerospace leader Boeing has unveiled its plans for what could be the world’s first hypersonic airliner, capable of flying at five times the speed of sound.
With the average speed of sound put at 1,225km per hour, the hypersonic passenger plane would be travelling at a top speed of over 6,125 km per hour.
The fastest passenger jet in recorded history is the Tupolev TU 144, a supersonic plane developed by the soviets.

It could reach speeds up to 1,510 mph (2,430 km/h). While it was retired from commercial use, the Russian space program still used it for training purposes.
With top speeds exceeding 3,800 miles per hour, the proposed hypersonic passenger jet could shuttle passengers from New York to London, a distance of 3,470 miles (5,585km) in just two hours. flights from New York to London usually take 7 to 8 hours.

The Chicago-based aviation giant revealed the renderings of the aircraft concept Tuesday at the annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Atlanta.
“Humankind has always wanted to go fast,  always wanted to do things faster,” said Kevin Bowcutt, chief scientists of hypersonics at Boeing.
“We are excited about the potential of hypersonic technology to connect the world faster than ever before,” he said.
The concept is still in the early stages of development, as there are key technical challenges that need to be solved, said Boeing spokesperson Brianna Jackson.
She said it is possible that the concept could become a reality in 20 to 30 years.
Boeing has been testing ultra-fast technology for decades, which could be used for both military and commercial applications, according to the company.
Besides Boeing, other companies such as Lockheed Martin and Aerion Corporation are also working to develop hypersonic aircrafts, the CNN reported.
The news Agency of Nigeria reports that the fastest ever jet in recorded history is the North American X-15.
Its top speed is Mach 6.72 (7,274 km or 4,520 miles). The jet was made by the U.S.A.

French President Emmanuel Macron

European Union leaders have reached a deal on steps to tackle migration during all-night talks Friday.
Italy had blocked an agreement until it got more help on the issue but French President Emmanuel hailed a victory for European cooperation.
Italy’s prime minister Giuseppe Conte said his country was “at last”, no longer alone.
Italy had turned away migrant boats in recent weeks, sparking a fresh political row three years after the bloc faced its biggest-ever migration crisis.
After the deal was reached Macron said European cooperation had won the day.
“There’s a will to better protect the borders, to strengthen the rules of reception,” he said.
The 28 leaders agreed to consider setting up “disembarkation platforms” outside the bloc, most probably in north Africa, in a bid to discourage migrants boarding EU-bound smuggler boats.
Member countries could set up migrant processing centres — but only on a voluntary basis — to determine whether to admit arrivals as refugees or turn them away as “economic migrants”.
The summit also offered a concession to German Chancellor Merkel, who faces a rebellion from within her own coalition government, with moves to stop migrants registered in Italy and other EU countries from moving to Germany.
“After intensive discussion on what is perhaps the most challenging issue for the European Union, it is a good message that we have adopted a joint text,” Merkel said.
She had earlier warned that “migration could end up determining Europe’s destiny” if it failed to reach an agreement.
As the summit got underway, EU president Donald Tusk issued a fresh warning on the need for action on migration to stave off rising populism and authoritarianism, saying that “the stakes are high and time is short”.
This applies to eastern European countries, in particular Hungary and Poland which are reticient to share the burden of migrant quotas to help allieviate southern nations.
