The High Court in Port Harcourt has restrained Information and culture minister Lai Mohammed from further publishing the name of the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Uche Secondus, in looters’ list.
The Chief Judge of Rivers state, Justice Iyayi Laminikara, who presided over the matter of libel, asked the plaintiff to serve the defendant with the appropriate notice.
The defendants or their representatives were absent in court, the
Secondus had on March 31, 2018, demanded a public apology and the sum of N1.5 billion as compensation, following the list of alleged looters revealed by the Federal Government.
Court stops Lai from listing Secondus among looters
He made the demand in a statement by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, a day after the Minister named Secondus among those who allegedly looted the nation’s treasury.
According to the list released, Secondus was alleged to have received the sum of N200 million from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) on February 19, 2015.
The PDP National Chairman, however, gave the minister 48 hours to withdraw the statement against him and tender a public apology, or face litigation.
Having failed to meet the demand, Secondus on April 6, 2018, file a suit against the minister, alleging defamation of character.
“In the suit no/PHC/1013/2018, he asked the court to award him the sum of N1.5 billion as damages for “humiliation, castigation, vilification attack on his person and integrity as a result of the publication.”
He also claimed that the list published by the minister was defamatory and urged the court to direct Mohammed to retract the said publication and apologise in writing.
However, in today’s sitting, counsel to Secondus who led other Senior Advocates to court, Emeka Etiaba, explained that the matter was on course.
The case has been adjourned untill May 28, 2018.

A robot in one of Japan’s construction site

This is not the best of times for construction workers in Japan but it is certainly a technology breakthrough, as Major Construction Company Shimizu Corporation has developed robots that can weld and lift materials at building sites.
Known as Robo-Welder and Robo-Buddy, the robots can also bolt or fasten building materials.
Robo-Welder
The company on Monday demonstrated robots that can pick up a pile of boards and take them to an elevator.
It says the robots with twisting mechanical arms, will be deployed at construction sites later this year, though because of safety concerns they will be used during night shifts when most human workers are not around.
The company said that most construction work is so delicate and complex that the robots can handle only about 1 percent of the work.
Japan is undergoing a construction boom but lacks enough workers to do the jobs — a problem seen in many regions of the world, including the U.S. LR News

The Senator representing Kogi State, Senator Dino Melaye, has been released from detention.

The Senator was released after he was detained by officials of the immigration service at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on his way to Morocco.

He told Channels Television that immigration officials told him that he is on the Interpol watch list and cannot be allowed to travel out of the country.

He took to his Twitter page to confirm his arrest.

His detention may not be unconnected to his refusal to report at the force headquarters in Lokoja the Kogi state capital for questioning.
But the police had on April 3, warned the Senator to appear in court ahead of his arraignment on May 10, 2018.
He is to be arraigned on a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms already filed before a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Senator Melaye had earlier failed to honour the invitation and a court summon issued him by the Force on March 24.
However, the Immigration officials alleged that he was detained based on an order from Interpol.
The police have denied any connection with his arrest.
Also confirming Melaye’s release is the Senator Representing Kaduna Central District, Senator Shehu Sani who took to his Twitter page to announce the news. LR News

Dino Melaye, with his dapper bag as posted on Instagram

Men of the Nigeria Immigration Service have arrested the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye.

Senator Melaye was on Monday arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport Abuja on his way to Morocco.

His arrest may not be unconnected to his refusal to report at the Force Headquarters in Kogi for questioning.

Melaye took to Twitter to announce his arrest.

“I have just been arrested at the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport on my way to Morocco for an official engagement sponsored by the Federal Govt after checking in,” he said on Twitter.

Neither the service nor the police had yet to confirm the arrest.

The police had on May 3, warned the Senator to appear in court ahead of his arraignment on May 10, 2018.

He was arraigned on a case of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms already filed before a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State.

However, the lawmaker failed to honour the invitation and a court summon issued him by the Force on March 24.

According to the police, the Senator is wanted on grounds of criminal offences of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.

Melaye’s summon follows the arrest of two men in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, on January 19, after they confessed to having committed various crimes such as kidnappings and armed robbery.

They also disclosed that the Senator had handed them a bag containing firearms.
The police while parading Kabiru Seidu and five other suspects who escaped from a detention facility in Lokoja, said it is in the interest of Senator Melaye to voluntarily report to the Police in order to forestall the execution of an arrest warrant issued against him.

Mr Moshood explains that the suspects whose confession indicted Senator Melaye and Mohammed Audu as sponsors of thuggery in Kogi will be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lokoja on May 10, 2018.

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, have explained the reasons why they were absent at the Nigeria-Us Investors Summit which was held in Washington, DC on Saturday.

The summit is organised by the Embassy of Nigeria in the United State and the absence of the Ministers had sparked criticism from the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi who described the absence of government officials at the event as carefree attitude to investment opportunities.
CBN gov Godwin Emefiele and Finance Kemi Adeosun

The Minister of Finance and CBN Governor, on Sunday, however said they never confirmed attendance at the summit. They said the meeting was not included in their schedule.

“I attend the IMFC which is the highest decision-making body of the IMF. My primary role here as well as having the Nigerian hat on is to represent 23 African countries. So one of the things I have to do is to issue a statement on behalf of those 23 which includes most of the Anglophone countries: South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania,” Adeosun said on Sunday.

“So, my primary role here, as well as having a Nigerian hat on is to represent the 23 African countries. There has been some controversy about the scheduling I wasn’t due at any event. I was here as a governor of the IMF and member of IMFC to represent those 23 African countries and that schedule is what I must adhere to,” she added.

On his part, Emefiele said a plenary session of IMF finance ministers and Central Bank Governors was holding at the same time of the event.

Emefiele said the meetings in the IMF as well as the meeting at the World Bank takes pre-eminence over the investment summit. He added that he wasn’t consulted when the programme was organised.

“Being the governor of the CBN what takes preeminence is the meetings in the IMF as well as the meeting at the World Bank. I think it is important for me to say this when I arrived in Washington, the officials of the embassy spoke with me that there was going to be a US-Nigeria summit and I said will check my schedule because I wasn’t consulted when this summit was being organised.

“What one would have expected is that they would have checked my schedule and that of the finance minister if they thought that our presence at the summit was very necessary,” he said.

Emefiele apologised to the investors and noted that himself and the Minister of Fianace are not irresponsible people.

“The US Nigeria summit was meant to hold between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. whereas the World Bank development committe plenary session which is an assembly of ministers and governors of central banks was to hold between 2:15 p.m. and 5p.m. There was no way how the minister of finance and myself could have been at those meetings.

“We are not irresponsible people and please we apologise to those investors who had gathered at the Nigerian embassy for the summit. My apologies but I know we also held some side meetings with some investors and there will always be lots of opportunities to meet with them.”

However, the country’s  North West police did not believe the incident was related to violent protests in the area this week, according to media reports on Sunday.
Two vehicles were set alight in two separate incidents by a group of unidentified people, multiple reports said.

“We can confirm that in two separate incidents, two vehicles were burnt by unknown suspects. In one of the incidents, a man sustained serious burn wound injuries after being set alight. He later died in hospital.
“At this stage a motive is unknown and police are still investigating,” the broadcaster added.
Calm returned to the area after days of protests calling for the removal of North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo.
The killing of the Nigerian came less than 10 days after another Nigerian ThankGod Okoro, 30, from Ogbaku in the Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State was murdered.
Records show that no fewer than 117 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa since February, 2016.
Unofficial estimates put the number of Nigerians residing in South Africa at about 800,000 majority of whom are young people. LR News
