Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, on Friday officially announced Feb. 15 to Feb. 19 as a mid-term break for students of all the Unity Schools across the country.
Adamu made the announcement at the ”7th edition of the Ministerial News Briefing” in Abuja.
“Our students in unity schools are not of voting age but we adjusted the mid-term break to make it fall within the elections period.
“The date for the mid-term break will be from Friday, Feb. 15 to Tuesday, Feb. 19. This is for only unity schools in the country.
“We are not shutting down other schools.
“The essence of this break is to enable parents have maximum time to go and cast their votes and have the freedom to bring their children and wards back to school.
“Even if the child is not of voting age, the parent is of voting age. The break is only for presidential elections.
“There is no break for governorship elections,” he said.
While reacting to the strike that was called off by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Feb. 7, Adamu commended everyone involved in the negotiations.
“All was for the development of the country’s educational system.
“I am happy to announce that ASUU has called off its strike.
“In spite of my anger and anxiety with ASUU, I must also commend their patriotism and public spiritedness because the last few weeks were about the struggle for education system and not their allowances,” he said.
The minister expressed optimism that Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) would also suspend its two months strike before Monday.

The Lagos State Government on Friday reversed its earlier decision to divert traffic and close roads during the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally in the state.
The state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson, at a news conference in Alausa, said the earlier statement announcing diversion and road closures had been reviewed, and residents were now free to go about their businesses.
Lawanson, who is also a member of the transport sub-committee for the Presidential visit and the APC rally, said Lagosians should jettison an earlier announcement by the committee to the effect that there would be road closures.
He said: “Lagosians have been very apprehensive that there will be traffic gridlock and we got a lot of feedback that we intend to grind Lagos to a halt.
“People are apprehensive; they think we are going to shut down Lagos; they think movement will be restricted and they are bracing themselves for what they anticipate will be the hardship that would be visited on them by the president’s visit and our own activities.
“The purpose of this news conference is to clarify that and to state emphatically that there will be from zero to minimal adverse effect of the President’s visit tomorrow.
“I repeat, there will be between zero to the barest minimum amount of disruptions to the normal movement that Lagosians undertake on a Saturday.
“So, there will not be any road closures in Lagos tomorrow and Lagosians are free to go about their normal businesses tomorrow, Saturday,” Lawanson said.
He said adequate arrangement had been firmed up to ensure free flow of traffic, but that residents should expect tight security around the routes which the President is expected to pass through in the course of his visit, and the venue of the rally.
“We will just like to communicate that because we are expecting a high calibre personality no less a person than the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the normal security precautions that attend a visit of this nature should be expected.
“The President will visit Lagos on Saturday with the full retinue of security aides that protect him and his entourage, but there will not be any road closures and there will be zero to minimal disruptions of normal activities,” the Commissioner said.
Lawanson said there will be huge presence of officials of the police, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), FRSC and other agencies to ensure free flow of traffic around the Surulere axis.
“Around the venue of the rally, which is the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, and the adjourning streets are traffic management agencies such as LASTMA, FRSC, Police and other agencies that will support them tomorrow.
“They will handle the traffic management around the venue tomorrow and so people can expect to see a huge presence of our traffic management officers fully on ground to ensure that there is free flow of traffic.
“We consider it important to clarify this so that we can communicate to Lagosians and give them the assurance that Lagos and especially Surulere will not be on lockdown,” the Commissioner said.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Wale Musa, said tow trucks would be deployed to promptly evacuate any broken down vehicle and adequate personnel provided to tackle any gridlock that may arise from the President’s visit and the activities around Surulere.

The warning was made in a statement by the Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Mohammed Shehu, in Gusau on Friday.
“The State Police Command has observed with utmost dismay that despite several sensitisation by the Command against the use of weapons during campaign rallies by political parties, most of the politicians are seen with their supporters carrying such weapons during campaigns and processions
“In view of the command’s determination and total commitment to ensure violence-free conduct of 2019 general elections, any person or group of persons seen with any weapon during any campaign rally of any political party, such persons will be arrested instantly and made to face the full wrath of the law,” the statement said.

A group, calling itself Interparty Coalition for National Sovereignty, is demanding the immediate resignation of the National Security Minister and that of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for allegedly losing control of the country’s security.

Reading the petition of the group after its demonstration on Thursday, February 7, 2019, the Convenor of the group and Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Mr Bernard Monah, said the National Security Minister has compromised the country’s security by recruiting illegal and unqualified party vigilante groups members into the country's security architecture.

He said whilst the police has denied knowledge of the masked and helmeted men who visited harm on some voters at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election on Thursday, January 31, 2019, the Minister in charge of National Security at the office of the President, Mr Bryan Acheampong, has admitted publicly of having deployed the said security officers.

“We demand immediate and unequivocal resignation of the Minister for National Security, Mr Kan Albert Dapaah, the Minister of State in charge of National Security, Mr Bryan Acheampong for unlawfully recruiting unqualified miscreants and hoodlums and equipping them with state-owned military and police weapons and accoutrements to commit this heinous and barbaric crime,” Mr Monah said.

Ex-Minister of state for defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court, Lagos, yesterday threatened to order the arrest of former minister of state for defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, for his absence in court.

The absence of Obanikoro, who was testifying for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the trial of former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, stalled the continuation of cross-examination.

EFCC counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), said Obanikoro took ill and was admitted.

“I called him yesterday (Wednesday) to notify him about today’s (Thursday) proceedings. He said he thought he would be discharged on Wednesday (when the court did not sit).
