Zonal coordinator, Dr. Ade Adejumo
The zonal coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ibadan Zone, Dr. Ade Adejumo, on Tuesday alleged that the Federal Government was making attempts to make students of federal universities pay a minimum of N350,000 as tuition fee.

Adejumo said this while addressing members of the Correspondents Chapel in Ibadan.

He said it was vital for ASUU to let the public know that there could be labour crisis in federal universities, adding that the proposal led to the breakdown of the 2017/2018 renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement.

He said, “The union is again constrained to draw the attention of Nigerian public to an impending labour crisis in the Nigerian universities as a result of the insensitivity of the Nigerian government to issues critical to the survival of the educational system in Nigeria.

“It is no longer news that the renegotiation, which Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, promised was going to last for only six weeks, has broken down.

“The union was confronted with a situation where government is bent on imposing tuition fees, beginning from N350,000, on students in the Nigerian public owned tertiary institutions.

“As to how the students will raise such money, we were told that the government will establish Education Bank, where students will access credit facilities and pay back on completion of their studies.

“The union, speaking from the background that education is the right and not privilege of every Nigerian child, made frantic efforts to make pragmatic explanations on the negative implications and the non-feasibility of this scheme to representatives of government to no avail.”

Adejumo said that the leader of the government team was bent on the introduction of the high fee, stating that the union would do everything to resist it.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has berated the Nigeria Police for the role its personnel played in the recent Osun State gubernatorial rerun, saying the police appeared compromised during the conduct of the September 27 supplementary governorship election in the state.

In the report by its ad-hoc committee on the rerun, which was published in NBA’s website, the association said the police refused to question the activities of “fierce-looking men who invaded the area at Orolu” where part of the supplementary took place.

The ad-hoc committee chaired by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Tawo Tawo stated in its report that the rerun “fell far short of a free and fair election compared to what transpired in the election of the September 22”.

The NBA, in its report, said the police by their actions and inactions, appeared compromised in the rerun election that took place in seven polling units across four local government areas.

The report added, “In conclusion, the rerun of the Osun State gubernatorial election fell far short of a free and fair election compared to what transpired in the election of the 22nd day of September, 2018 in Osun State which was however declared inconclusive.

”From the actions and inactions of the Nigerian Police Force, they appeared to have been compromised given the fact that the Police did not question the activities of the about fifty (50) fierce-looking men who invaded the area at Orolu.”

The NBA said members of its observation team, monitored the election at Osogbo polling unit 17, ward 5, in Osogbo where the observed “massive armed security presence with movement around the polling unit restricted to voters and observers”.

The report noted that all the election materials were made available for the election and the electoral protocols for voting were fulfilled by the electoral officers at the unit.

It stated that accreditation and voting commenced at about 8:02 a.m and the voting process went on smoothly till about 11:30 am”when some hoodlums invaded the area in an attempt to disrupt the process”.

It added, “the situation was brought under control by the security personnel present.

“In spite of the seeming and subtle form of intimidation, voters were undaunted as they did cast their votes.”

“There was substantial compliance with the election process and procedure at the polling units.”

A former Vice-President, who is also a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said that the elite are against him because they feel he has an independent mind.

Atiku said there were fears in some quarters that it would be difficult for him to be manipulated if he became the President.

Atiku stated this at a media chat in Abuja organised by the United Nigeria Group on Sunday night.

When asked about what was wrong with Nigeria that stopped someone like him from getting elected, he said, “It is what I call the conspiracy theory of the political elite. If you are not going to be used, if you are not going to satisfy their personal aspiration, then, they will think you are not good enough.

“Part of the problem they have with me is that they say I am independent, principled and so on.

“Honestly, it is the conspiracy of the political elite and unfortunately the Nigeria public is not politically sophisticated to override the conspiracy of the political elite. They rely on the political elite to direct them.”

He tasked Nigerians to dismiss insinuations in some quarters that his reputation for defecting from one political party to the other should count against him.

Rather, he said what people should consider was the consistency of his belief and his vision for Nigeria and Nigerians.

He also said that his experience in politics placed him ahead of other presidential aspirants in the PDP.

Atiku stated, “I want the job of the President of Nigeria because more than any other time since the time of our democracy, I think we need a leadership that has the experience, that has the capacity and the know-how.

“The most challenging issue in the country today is the issue of unemployment and creation of jobs, unity in the country and states. I believe I am more suitable to handle all these.

“As a civil servant, I worked for over 20 years in the federal bureaucracy and as a politician, I served successfully for eight years as the Vice-President and in that position I chaired the economic team of that administration and I brought so many innovations to our administration that led to the creation of jobs, creation of wealth and prosperity as well as relative peace and stability.

“Nigeria lost a lot of foreign investments under Buhari.”

Atiku also took a swipe at the economic policies of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, saying they scared away investors.

He said that Nigeria needed a leader, who could create jobs and ensure peace in all the communities of the country.

Faulting the economic challenges facing the country, he stated, “I have not seen Nigeria in such a bad shape. Our unemployment rate is the highest. Our growth is at its lowest ebb. When this administration took over, we were growing our Gross Domestic Product at six per cent. They took it over and crashed it totally. We are trying to come out of this recession at about 1.6 per cent growth.

“Consider the growth of our population. It is dangerous for any country for its economic growth to be below its population growth. That is the danger that is facing our country today.”

He recalled that in 1999, he was the Chairman of the PDP administration’s economic team, which promoted the flow of foreign investments into the country and expanded the private sector participation in government.

Atiku stated, “If these policies, which were started had been continued, we would not be at this juncture today. As you know that some of our programmes in privatisation were discontinued for almost six years and also the foreign direct investments’ incentives that we started were not continued. I believe that we need someone who will start again all these policies so that we can bring back our prosperity, create jobs for our unemployed men and women who are currently in a very bad shape.”

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were on Monday absent at a parade organised to commemorate Nigeria’s 58th Independence Day anniversary.

The strictly military event held at the Eagles Square, Abuja was attended by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

Recall that Saraki and Dogara recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

Also in attendance at the parade was the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was also absent at the event attended by two former military leaders: Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.

On arrival at the venue, Buhari first took the national salute before moving to inspect the parade in a motorcade.

He later returned to the VIP stand to join Osinbajo, Onnoghen, Gowon, Abdulsalami and other dignitaries.

The event featured match past by military personnel, policemen, officials of the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Prisons Service as well as those of the Nigerian Legion and members of the National Youth Service Corps.

There were also displays by policemen, men of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force.

Highlights of the displays included the aerial display by men of the NAF.

The display featured 22 aircraft out of which 18 were said to have been acquired under this administration.

The Monday event was the first time since 2010 that the Federal Government will be celebrating the nation’s Independence anniversary elaborately.

Recall that the 2010 event which marked the nation’s 50th Independence anniversary was marred by bomb blasts allegedly masterminded by members of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta.

That was under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Since then, the government had observed low-key celebrations with the October 1 event holding at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Since 2015 when he assumed office, Buhari had also been celebrating the day at the Presidential Villa.

Saraki, Dogara and Nigerian former leaders had been joining him for the event.
