The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has waded into the controversy of a forged certificate of exemption allegedly used by the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun.

In a statement on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adeyemi Adenike, NYSC confirmed that the minister applied for an exemption certificate.

It also vowed to investigate the source of the purported forged certificate.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to the issue of the alleged forgery of an NYSC Exemption Certificate by the Honorable Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun.

“Checking our records, Mrs Adeosun did apply for an Exemption Certificate.

“We shall investigate the origin of the purported Exemption Certificate in question.”

A recent report which went viral had claimed that Mrs Adeosun failed to participate in the mandatory national youth service and supposedly obtained a fake exemption certificate.

The one-year service is a compulsory scheme for all Nigerian graduates who have not attained the age of 30.

However, the minister has yet to respond to the allegations.

Mrs Adeosun had served as the Commissioner of Finance in Ogun State between 2011 and 2015, during the first term of Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

She later joined President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet as the Minister of Finance later in 2015.

The Nigerian Army has handed over 183 teenagers who were previously working with Boko Haram terrorists to the United Nations.

The teenagers were on Monday handed over to officials of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital for rehabilitation and re-integration.

The Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Nicholas Rogers released the teenagers who include 175 male and eight female.

Major General Rogers during the handing over noted that they were arrested from various locations within the northeast.

President Muhammadu Buhari earlier in March 2018 promised that the Federal Government will offer amnesty to members of the Boko Haram sect that are willing to drop their arms.

He made this promise while receiving freed schoolgirls who were previously abducted from their school in Dapchi, Yobe State by Boko Haram terrorists.

He said, “While further efforts are being made to secure the release of every abducted citizen in Nigeria, Government is ever ready to accept the unconditional laying down of arms by any member of the Boko Haram group, who show strong commitment in that regard.”

Also, 95 former Boko Haram terrorists were recently reintegrated into the Nigerian society after a series of training, vocational skills acquisition, and rehabilitation courses.

The repentant terrorists were trained by the Nigerian Army wing charged with the responsibility of Deracialising, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) in Gombe State.

They were rehabilitated by instructors from departments and agencies from the Federal Government and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) with the aim of retraining them to become law-abiding citizens.

A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Olisa Agbakoba on Monday said the creation of state police was “more than necessary” to address the security issues in the country.
Agbakoba made this known in an interview with the NAN in Lagos.
He was reacting to renewed clamour for the creation of state police in view of the prevailing security situation in the country.
The Senate had on Tuesday, July 3 passed a resolution directing its Constitutional Review Committee to set up a mechanism to amend the constitution to allow for state police.
The resolution followed concerns raised by Sen. Jonah Jang about killings in Plateau State and other parts of the country.
Agbakoba said the centrally-controlled police could not provide adequate security cover for the country, pointing out that state police would strengthen security.
“The new momentum for state police is a welcome development. The creation of state police at this critical time is more than necessary.
“You see, I feel sorry for the Inspector-General of Police who have to sit down in Abuja and monitor the entire criminal justice system in Nigeria.
“It is not just possible .There is nowhere in the world where you have the kind of the Nigerian policing structure where everything is controlled from the centre.
“The typical thing is that not only you need the state police to provide adequate security, you also need local government police,’’ he said.
Agbakoba said that the state police was part of what had been widely discussed in the larger issue of restructuring.
He said the broader issue in the discussion was devolution of powers from Federal Government to States.
Agbakoba added that there was the need for the central government to devolve powers to the states to allow the latter run their affairs efficiently, including security.
On whether state police would not be abused by governors to fight opposition, Agbakoba answered in the negative.
He said once the policing option was anchored on the right constitutional provisions to guard against abuse, state police would operate efficiently.
“What we need to do is just introduce into the constitution, regulations that would not allow governors to control the police.
“The governors will not have authority to appoint or dismiss police heads. All these will be guaranteed.
“After all, the judiciary is functioning independently. It is functioning because there is the National Judicial Council in the constitution performing the functions of judicial policies, appointments, dismissals and retirements,’’ Agbakoba said. LR News

Bala added that 6, 653 persons are taking refuge in eight different camps including host communities in Mangu local government.
According to her, each of the five local governments has a “host community’’ camp.
“When we say the host communities, we are talking about those relations hosting some of the affected victims in their respective houses,’’ she explained.
The director said that SEMA had distributed relief materials in the various camps with the exception of those at Farin Lamba in Riyom, Mangun and COCIN Ranpiya in Mangu.
On the exact number of men, women and children in the various camps, the official said that the agency had not completed the profiling of the IDPs.
