Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted dust haze over the central states of the country on Monday with visibility range of three to five kilometres.
NiMet’s Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office in Abuja on Sunday also predicted day and night temperatures in the range of 27 to 34 and 18 to 22 degrees Celsius.
It added that localised visibility of less than or equal to 2000m would prevail over the region during the forecast period.

The agency predicted that the southern states would experience cloudy to partly cloudy morning conditions with day and night temperatures in the range of 30 to 33 and 18 to 23 degrees Celsius respectively.
It also predicted chances of localised thunderstorms over Ikom, Uyo, Umuahia, Enugu, Owerri, Calabar, Eket, PortHarcourt, Yenagoa, Warri, Benin, Akure and Ijebu-Ode during the afternoon and evening hours.
According to NiMet, northern states will experience dust haze conditions over most parts of the region with visibility range of two to three kilometres.
“ The region will also experience localised visibility of less than or equal to 2000m with day and night temperatures of 31 to 37 and 17 to 23 degrees Celsius respectively.
“ Dust haze conditions are expected to prevail over northern cities down to the central state with visibility range of less than or equal to 2000 meters over most parts of the northern cities.

Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ekiti State chapter, has taken steps to clamp down on illegal medical centres and fake doctors.
The Association on Sunday signed a pact with the state government for introduction of accreditation of health facilities.
Dr Sunday Omoya, the NMA Chairman, said on Sunday at the end of the 2017 Physicians’ Week and Ordinary General Meeting of the medical body.
He said the medical body regretted the activities of some unregistered medical practitioners in the state.
He added that such activities had been affecting medical practice and denting the image of members, saying “this must stop in the overall interest of health security of residents of the state.”
He commended the Gov. Ayo Fayose-led state government for implementing Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS) for all categories of doctors in the state, noting however that the policy had not been beneficial, owing to the six months salary owed doctors.
Omoya said a total of 300 people were offered free medical treatment by doctors at Ipole Iloro in Ekiti West Local Government Area during the 2017 Physicians’ Week.

He added that NMA held medical education for rural dwellers on dieting,
hypertension, HIV/AIDS and other ailments ravaging the people at the
grassroots.
He urged government to pay members’ salaries and fund health institutions, particularly the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital(EKSUTH), to improve healthcare delivery in the state.
He noted that “we have set up a committee to look into the issue of quackery’’.
We reached an agreement with state government on accreditation and re-registration of all health facilities in Ekiti.
“We are looking into the genuineness of health facilities to know if they go beyond the scope for which they are registered.“If a facility is registered as a maternity or clinic or hospital, it can’t go beyond that scope but in Ekiti, some maternity homes are performing surgeries and this is wrong and dangerous.
“Defaulting facilities will be shut and the owners prosecuted accordingly.”
He commended the state government for being among the five states
that met 70 per cent benchmark in immunisation coverage.
On the issue of non-payment of salaries, Omoya said: “We are pleading that even if all the arrears won’t be paid, government should bring us as per with our colleagues in civil service.
“As we speak now, we are owing government six months salary, while civil servants are owed five months and this is demoralising doctors in health institutions.” (NAN)

An economic expert, Charles Nwekeaku, has advised the Federal Government to follow due process in getting the forfeiture of monies in accounts without Bank Verification Numbers(BVN) to the government.
Nwekeaku, an Associate Professor at the Nassarawa State University, Keffi, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
The Federal Government recently instituted an action in a court for the forfeiture of any balance in bank accounts without BVN.
An interim order of forfeiture was granted by the court on Oct. 17 for the various Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) to show cause within 14 days why the balances in such accounts should not be forfeited.
The current practice is that banks only permit deposits into such accounts without withdrawal.
Therefore, if the Federal Government succeeds, the money is forfeited permanently.
According to Nwekeaku, some Nigerians opened accounts before the introduction of BVN and may have travelled outside the country.
“Some of these people may have one impediment or the other that has kept them away, so it will be unfair for government to just opt and request they forfeit their funds.
“I think even if the government wants to do that, government should take due process; government should make diligent effort to inform the people accordingly.
“Government should also find out the kind of agreement people had with their banks when they opened the accounts and if they were not initially informed about the BVN, they should be given sufficient time,’’ he said.
Nwekeaku said any rash decision now by the government would be considered retroactive, in the sense that BVN wasn’t an issue when those accounts were opened.
He said that government should make conscientious effort to ensure the people were informed about the implications of not doing the BVN registration before such rash actions were taken.
“I know the BVN issue is over a year now but you will agree with me that there are some people who travelled out of Nigeria and haven’t come back since then.
“There are also some who are hospitalised, they have been bed ridden for a long time, making them unable to do the BVN. So do you expect them to forfeit their funds?
“So I think any rash decision now by the government will be considered as breaching the fundamental human rights of the people and that is not good for our democratic nation,” the don said.
On the proposed Dangote Refinery, Nwekeaku said it was a welcome development as it would help in growing the country’s economy and increase its GDP.
Nwekeaku said it was impressive that individuals in the country were thinking of going into the business of refining crude oil which was not the case in the past.
He noted that the norm of exporting crude without adding any value to it had not helped the country as it had increased the rate of unemployment in the country.
The don said that if refineries were built and were functional, it would add value chain and generate more employment for the youth in the country.
Nwekeaku said,“ a number of people have got licences to build refineries but for one reason or the other they don’t want to do that, so for Dangote to have taken the move, it is a welcome development.
“And we believe that if the refinery is put in place, it will generate much employment opportunities; it may equally reduce the cost of petroleum products in the country.
“Also the unit price of petroleum certainly will reduce and I think it will go a long way to improve the economy.
“Therefore, government should encourage more individuals to go into establishing private refineries and I believe when that is done, it will help to stimulate the economy.’’ (NAN)

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said it’s troops destroyed a Boko Haram grain market at Boboshe village in Borno.
Director Army Public Relations Sani Kukasheka, who disclosed this in a statement in Maiduguri, said this was part of efforts by the armed forces to degrade the remnants of the insurgents.
Kukasheka said that the troops discovered a make shift night market at Boboshe village set up by the insurgents with newly harvested farm produce on display for sale.
He said that the troops conducted clearance operations in seven villages, rescued five persons and recovered three vehicles, four Dane guns, a dummy gun and mattresses.
“Troops of 112 Task Force Battalion and Mobile Strike Teams of 22 Brigade of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) on Friday, carried out clearance operations at Gawa, Bone, Kajeri I, Kajeri II, Kube, Dubula, Boboshe I and Boboshe II villages in Borno State.
“During the operation, the gallant troops discovered that the terrorists had erected a make-shift night market at Boboshe village with newly harvested farm produce on display for sale.
“After conducting a thorough search of the vicinity, the troops recovered three Isuzu vehicles, four Dane guns, one Dummy gun, suspected to be used for training of inducted Boko Haram terrorists and mattresses hidden under shrubs.”
Kukasheka explained that troops rescued five persons abducted by the insurgents at Boboshe 1 and Dubula villages.
He reiterated the commitment of the military to root out the remnants of Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.
Kukasheka called on members of the public to provide useful information to security agencies in the ongoing clearance operations in the region.

U.S. Defense Secretary, Jim Mattis

Jim Mattis, the U.S. Defense Secretary has warned North Korea of the danger that awaits it if carries out any attack on the United States or its allies.
Mattis who issued the warning to North Korea on Saturday, told the regime of Kim Jong Un its ongoing missile and nuclear development, was no match for the U.S.-South Korea alliance.
“Make no mistake,” Mattis said during a news conference in Seoul, “any attack on the United States or our allies will be defeated, and any use of nuclear weapons by the North will be met with a massive military response that is effective and overwhelming.”
During the joint appearance with South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo, Mattis acknowledged that the threat of a nuclear missile attack by North Korea was accelerating.
The CIA says North Korea could be just months away from being capable of hitting the U.S. with a nuclear strike, Reuters reported.
Mattis accused Kim Jong Un of illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear programs and vowed to defeat any attack.
He said the North engages in “outlaw” behaviour and that the U.S. would never accept a nuclear North.
The defense chief added that regardless of what the North might try, it is overmatched by the firepower and cohesiveness of the decades-old U.S.-South Korean alliance.
“North Korea has accelerated the threat that it poses to its neighbours and the world through its illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear weapons programs,” Mattis said, adding that U.S.-South Korean military and diplomatic collaboration thus has taken on “a new urgency.”
“I cannot imagine a condition under which the United States would accept North Korea as a nuclear power,” he said.

Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, scores against Tottenham Hotspurs

Substitute Anthony Martial’s 81st minute strike gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday to keep them in touch with Premier League leaders Manchester City.
After last week’s surprise defeat at Huddersfield Town, Jose Mourinho’s team could not still afford another slip-up, but they found it hard to break down a resilient Spurs’ defence.
Tottenham, without their top scorer Harry Kane, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury, could have gone in front in the 76th minute when Christian Eriksen threaded a superb ball towards Dele Alli.
But, the England midfielder’s effort went the wrong side of the post.
Romelu Lukaku headed a Jesse Lingard cross against the post, United finally broke through and it was in direct fashion.
A long ball from goalkeeper David De Gea was flicked on by Lukaku into the path of the on-running Martial and the Frenchman confidently slotted past Hugo Lloris.
United moves on to 23 points, two points behind leaders, City, who also defeated West Bromwich Albion by three goals to two on Saturday, while third-placed Spurs are on 20.
Elsewhere, Liverpool turned on the style at Anfield with three second-half goals as Huddersfield were unable to follow up last week’s victory over Manchester United.
Liverpool humble Huddersfield

A frustrating goalless first half for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds was capped when Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl denied Mohamed Salah from the penalty spot.
Yet the hosts were much improved after the break, Daniel Sturridge pouncing on a mistake by Tommy Smith to score his 100th goal in club competition.
Roberto Firmino’s header doubled the lead before Georginio Wijnaldum smashed home the third to lift the Reds three places up the table to sixth spot.
Victory was also secured as Arsenal came from a goal down to defeat Swansea at the Emirate.
Aaron Ramsey celebrates Arsenal’s goal

Sam Clucas scored Swansea’s goal in the 22nd before Sead Kolasinac and Ramsey sealed the deal for Arsenal in the 51st and 58th minutes respectively.
The victory meant Arsene Wenger tutored side have won its third straight game.

Britain’s Anthony Joshua retained his IBF and WBA world heavyweight titles when he stopped bloodied challenger Carlos Takam in the 10th round in Cardiff on Saturday.
Unbeaten champion Joshua, who has Nigerian parents,  opened up a dreadful cut above 36-year Takam’s right eye in the fourth round and although the durable France-based Cameroonian battled on, the fight was halted after a series of heavy blows.

It was far from a straightforward night for Joshua in the Principality Stadium, however, as the 28-year-old appeared to suffer a broken nose in the second round after an accidental clash of heads with his shorter and lighter opponent.

Joshua’s victory in his first fight since his epic tussle with Wladimir Klitschko in April took his record to 20-0.
Many fans were disappointed that the fight was stopped.
Beaten  Takam also believed that  the referee was not right to stop the fight.
No, I don’t think so,” he says. “I don’t know why the referee stopped the match. I respect the champion and the UK fans, they are great fans and I am happy to box here. I don’t know why they stopped it.
“I want a rematch, I make my preparations with 12 days to fight Anthony. I want a rematch, I want to box him again, I want him, he is a great champion.”
The two fighters fought  for a combined total of around £11million. Total fight revenues will be bigger than this figure.
Joshua is going to take the bulk, as you would expect as he defends his belts.
It will be around 90/10 in Joshua’s favour, meaning Joshua can be expected to earn £10million and Carlos Takam £750,000.

Suspected Boko Haram have attacked Goneri community in Yobe State Northeast Nigeria.

Top military official said the attackers are believed to have stormed the town from the southern part, around the Sambisa, Talala and Alagarno areas that the military said troops had cleared.

The officials, who did not want to be named, said sporadic gunshots were being heard in the community, which is in Gujba Local Government Area of the state.

Some residents of the area told Channels Television through the phone that the attack appears to have been repelled as the military are presently chanting victory songs around town.

Details of the impact of the attack remains sketchy with emergency and military officials yet to issue official statements about it.

The attack comes just as many people from Goneri who were displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency are returning to the community due to the relative peace it had enjoyed for some time.

It also comes four days after Boko Haram terrorists attacked a military base in Sasawa town of Damaturu Local Government Area, which is the capital of the state.

A top security source, who preferred not to be named had told Channels Television that eight soldiers (including an officer) and a civilian were killed in Tuesday’s attack, while several others were injured in the attack.

“I can authoritatively confirm to you that there was an attack at dawn yesterday at Sasawa and eight military personnel, including an officer as well as a civilian, were killed during the raid,” he had said.

“The insurgents overran the military base having come with seven gun trucks and took the soldiers on guard unawares.”

The spokesman for 3 Division, Nigerian Army base in Damaturu, Colonel Kayode Ogunsanya, who also confirmed the attack, had said casualty was recorded on both sides.
