Suspected Boko Haram have attacked Goneri community in Yobe State Northeast Nigeria.

Top military official said the attackers are believed to have stormed the town from the southern part, around the Sambisa, Talala and Alagarno areas that the military said troops had cleared.

The officials, who did not want to be named, said sporadic gunshots were being heard in the community, which is in Gujba Local Government Area of the state.

Some residents of the area told Channels Television through the phone that the attack appears to have been repelled as the military are presently chanting victory songs around town.

Details of the impact of the attack remains sketchy with emergency and military officials yet to issue official statements about it.

The attack comes just as many people from Goneri who were displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency are returning to the community due to the relative peace it had enjoyed for some time.

It also comes four days after Boko Haram terrorists attacked a military base in Sasawa town of Damaturu Local Government Area, which is the capital of the state.

A top security source, who preferred not to be named had told Channels Television that eight soldiers (including an officer) and a civilian were killed in Tuesday’s attack, while several others were injured in the attack.

“I can authoritatively confirm to you that there was an attack at dawn yesterday at Sasawa and eight military personnel, including an officer as well as a civilian, were killed during the raid,” he had said.

“The insurgents overran the military base having come with seven gun trucks and took the soldiers on guard unawares.”

The spokesman for 3 Division, Nigerian Army base in Damaturu, Colonel Kayode Ogunsanya, who also confirmed the attack, had said casualty was recorded on both sides.
