No fewer than 7,000 persons, from diffrent communities of Etsako West, Etsako East and Etsako Central Local Government Areas of Edo, received free treatment provided by a United Kingdom based Medical Doctor, Dr Benedict Ifsuokor.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the free medical treatment which lasted for three days, saw 50 medical personnels, from across Nigeria and UK, attending to patients.
NAN reports that the free medical outreach, under the umbrella, “Ogbona Elites Forum” took placed at the Chief C. K. Orbih Comprehensive Health Center, Ogona, near Auchi, Etsako Central Local Government Council.
Ifsuokor who put the cost of the three days treatment at well over N20m, said he was moved to carry out the exercise to prevent needless deaths in the communities.
He said the death of his parents, who were both from Ogbona, informed his decision to assist the people.
According to him, “I was around in March to bury my mother and i was alarmed with the appalling state of this hospital when i visited, i then took a decision to do something for the community.
“My father died in this community and the message i got back in England, was that he died in this appalling condition, the services of this hospital were not enough to meet with his condition as at that time.
“My mother died before me in England and before she died, she begged me to come meet with her people back home in Nigeria.
“I called the resident doctor to ask about the specific services that she will need, but all these were not available. All these moved me into what you are seeing here today.
“I was moved with passion to come into this community to provide these services that are essential and to prevent needless deaths in the community.
“I came in with 6 medical personnels from the UK, joined by 15 from Lagos and Abuja, another 10 from hospitals in Benin and another 6 from University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
“I also came here with two state of the art patient monitor, a diagnostic test, and other medical equipment.
“There is also a provision for a solar generator which is actually on transit as we speak. I Bought it for £10,000, excluding shipment. It will be assembled here in this hospital.
“I have spent over N17m, excluding the cost of the generator. All the cost is fully on me, no assistance from anywhere.
Ifsuokor who said he has the plan to sustain the free medical treatment, noted that any patient with extreme case, would be referred to a Specialise Hospital in Benin for proper treatment.
NAN reports that the Ogbona Elites forum, however, collaborated with the state government in the area of HIV counselling.
The state Head of Edo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (ESACA), Dr Flora Oyakhilomhe, said the collaboration was necessary because the entry point to every treatment is knowing your identification, knowing your status.
“All we do here is carrying out HIV counselling and testing of persons to know who is effected, and anyone that is effected, be enrolled into the treatment scheme that is completely free.
“This is because, we believe here that problem identified is problem solved,” she stated.
Meanwhile, he clan head of the Ogbona Community, Chief Willy Idode, has commended the initiator of the free health services and called for support, especially from the government, to make it a yearly affairs.
He said the call became necessary as there are many sick people who stay back home, either waiting to die or be saved miraculously, as they could not afford the cost of treatment.
“This initiative is a very good one; you can see the joy on the faces of everybody around. They are all happy.
“This is especially so, because, we have so many of our people at home, sick or afflicted with one kind of ailment or the other, but because they cannot afford the treatment, they just sit back at home waiting to die or be saved miraculously.
“Since the commencement of the programme, i am particularly overwhelmed withe the level of turnout of people wanting to be treated.
“This is a very strong message to the government that if people or individual, can on his own organise things like this, government should build on it such that it can now be a yearly programme,” he said. LR News

Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola,  has released N500 million to the management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology  Ogbomoso.

The Public Relations Officer of the LAUTECH, Mr Lekan Fadeyi , announced this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Saturday.

He said the latest release was in fulfillment of the promise made by the governor.

He said the governor made the promise last week when the Chairman,  Governing Council of the LAUTECH, Prof Afolabi Oladipo, led the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adeniyi Gbadegesin, and other university officials to visit Aregbesola in Osogbo.

The university said the money came into its account on Friday just some days after the promise.

Fadeyi stated that the governor told the delegation that his administration was committed to the welfare of staff and students of the institution.

The university’s spokesperson quoted Aregbesola to have said that his government was proud of the various giant strides of the LAUTECH staff and students.

He appealed to the staff and students to continue with the good works aimed at sustaining its present position among tertiary institutions, stressing that all would be well soon.

Responding, the vice-chancellor said he was glad that Osun State had again shown its commitment as a part owner of the university.

He thanked the governor and people of the state while appealing that they should further demonstrate love to the university and its workers, through adequate funding.

Former Minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun
Nigeria’s former finance minister, Kemi Adeosun, has left the country, a day after her resignation, sources close to her told PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday.

Mrs Adeosun, finance minister since November 2015, stepped down from office on Friday after owning up to parading a forged youth service scheme certificate.

President Muhammadu Buhari accepted her resignation on Friday night, 69 days after PREMIUM TIMES first published a detailed investigation of how she obtained the fake document and went on to secure plush employments with it, including as head of Nigeria’s finance ministry.

Mrs Adeosun explained in her resignation letter that the PREMIUM TIMES investigation was true, but said she did not know the certificate was forged as she relied on associates who helped obtain it after she returned from the UK.

The former minister expressed her gratitude for the honour to serve her country.

Although Nigerians welcomed her resignation, which many even complained was long overdue, they also demanded her immediate prosecution. Some civic groups have already instituted legal action to compel federal authorities to file charges against her.

But a day after she stepped down, Mrs Adeosun, who was born and raised in England, departed the country, according to her associates who notified PREMIUM TIMES of the development Saturday evening.

“She has left Nigeria,” a source said. “She most likely is in the UK by now.”

When PREMIUM TIMES called her Nigerian line several times Saturday night, it rang through each time in the Europe internal phone ringing effect.

Telecoms experts who also dialled her number at PREMIUM TIMES’ instance Saturday evening also said the telephone certainly did not ring in Nigeria.

The government investigation into the scandal was coordinated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, PREMIUM TIMES found.

American President Donald Trump, never allowing any opportunity to slip to punch his traducers, taunted the media on Saturday over their silence over a verbal slip by former President Barack Obama.
Google checks showed that President Trump was referencing an Obama slip that was made about 10 years ago. It is strange that the 10 year-old slip-of-tongue should be a talking point now.
On a campaign trip to Beaverton, Oregon, in May 2008, an obviously tired Barack Obama mistakenly told a crowd that over the course of the long campaign he had been to fifty-seven states in the U.S., with one left to go:
“… it is just wonderful to be back in Oregon, and over the last 15 months we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in fifty …. seven states? I think one left to go. One left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit but my staff would not justify it.”
In reality America has 50 states and two districts in Washington DC and Puerto Rico.
Since the media have ignored the slip of tongue by Obama, Trump, usually the butt of attack by the media weighed in , saying if he had committed the same error, the media would have slain him.

Wale Akorede, Okunnu
Popular actor, Wale Akorede, 50, popularly known as Okunnu, may have been in the movie industry for over two decades but he would never forget the day he earned his first pay as an actor.

In a chat with Saturday Beat, he said that he was so happy the day he was paid 60 kobo after a movie role and that he almost ran mad. The comic actor told Saturday Beat that the money he was paid motivated him to focus more on his craft and put in more efforts to be the best on the job.

“The first time I received money for acting was in 1984 and I was paid 60 kobo. When I was given the money, I almost ran mad. I was very impressed and encouraged to do the job; presently, I earn well for most of the roles I play,” he said.

Also speaking on what makes him look younger than his age, said, “God is the one who strengthens me; I don’t eat much but I take multivitamins to take care of myself.”

Okunnu is known for his comical roles in Yoruba movies, but the veteran said that despite being known for comical movies, he didn’t feel caged by such roles.

“I don’t feel stereotyped by playing such roles because I can still take up any role. I have played all sorts of roles in movies. But the funny thing is that even when I do serious roles, people still laugh because of the stereotype,” he said with a smile.

Okunnu also shared with Saturday Beat the reason why he would never stop acting. According to him, acting runs through his veins, and despite the challenges of life, he can never feel downcast.

“I am always happy; I don’t allow challenges to weigh me down. I loved acting as a child but my parents were not in support of it. I started full-time acting after my father died. I even ran away from home several times because I wanted to be on location. My mother gave me her full support when she started seeing me on screen.

“I used to be a proper businessman before, but acting runs through my veins. The field of business is a playground for me but there is no other profession I would rather do than this. Acting is my destiny,” he told Saturday Beats.
