President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the Yoruba nation over the passing of the founder of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr. Frederick Fasehun.
The President, in a condolence message by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Saturday, also condoled with the family of the medical practitioner and the government and people of Ondo State.
President Buhari recalled the prominent role Fasehun played as a member of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) which campaigned against military rule in the country.
The President prayed that almighty God would comfort all those who mourned the octogenarian and grant peace to his soul.
Fasehun, aged 83, died at about 1a.m., Saturday at the intensive care unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Ikeja (LASUTH).
Late Fasehun, who was born in Ondo on Sept. 25, 1938 in Ondo, Ondo State, was an active member of NADECO.
He began his education late, entering primary school at the age of 13 at Saint Matthews Roman Catholic School, Ondo.
He later moved to Saint Peter’s Teacher’s Training College, Akure, also in Ondo state. But he was expelled from school, because of his non-conformity with Catholicism.
Fasehun was then admitted to Ondo Boys High School, where he completed his secondary education in less than three years, with a Grade One distinction.
His brother offered him a scholarship to study science at Blackburn College in the UK.  He furthered his education at Aberdeen University College of Medicine.
He also studied at the Liverpool Postgraduate School after which he had a Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons.
In 1976, he studied acupuncture in China under a joint World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Development Scholarship Programme.
On his return in 1977, he set up an Acupuncture Unit at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
He resigned in 1978 and immediately set up the Best Hope Hospital and Acupuncture Centre in Lagos.
His Acupuncture Centre once earned a reputation as Africa’s first for the Chinese medical practice.

The commandant said illegal sale of SIM cards had become a popular trade, adding that many had been using the cards to carry out criminal activities.
He also said that the command signed a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU ) with the Nigerian  Communication Commission (NCC) to halt usage of such  cards.
“Their (NCC) enforcement team in Abuja came to me and requested for us to work together to reduce usage of such SIM cards and sale by road side hawkers.
“We had an agreement and since then, we have been working together to put a stop to the act,” he said.
Adeyinka advised residents to refrain from buying unregistered and registered SIM cards from road side hawkers.
He advised them to always visit accredited shops for the purchase of the cards to ensure their biometrics details were captured.

Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush dies at 94

George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States, has died, after months of declining health. He was aged 94.
His death was announced by his family Friday night on Twitter.
“George Herbert Walker Bush, World War II naval aviator, Texas oil pioneer, and 41st President of the United States of America, died on November 30, 2018. He was 94 and is survived by his five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two siblings,” the former president’s office said in a statement.
“He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Barbara; his second child Pauline “Robin” Bush; and his brothers Prescott and William or “Bucky” Bush.”
His son George W. Bush, who served as the country’s 43rd president, released a statement of his own from the family.
“Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died,” George W. Bush said. “George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.”
Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital with a blood infection on April 22 — two days after the funeral for his wife of 73 years, former first lady Barbara Bush.
He is survived by his five children, including former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
Bush was with his wife when she died at the age of 92 on April 17.
“He of course is broken-hearted to lose his beloved Barbara, his wife of 73 years. He held her hand all day and was at her side when [she] left this good earth,” a statement from his office said after her death. “But it will not surprise all of you who know and love him, that he also is being stoic and strong, and is being lifted up by his large and supportive family.”
The elder Bush, a Republican like his sons, also served as vice president for eight years during Ronald Reagan’s two terms as president, before being elected to the White House himself.
He defeated former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, the Democratic nominee, in the 1988 presidential campaign, and lost his 1992 re-election bid to Democrat Bill Clinton.
He made a lot of money in crude oil business.

Brig. general Sani Kukasheka Usman

The Nigerian Army has re-appointed Brig.-Gen. Sani Kukasheka Usman as its spokesman, replacing Brig. General Texas Chukwu.
In a statement posted on its Whatsapp platform on Friday, the army said Usman’s re-appointment followed his completion of the “Strategic course at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies’’ – NIPSS, at Kuru in Jos.
The army maintained the re-appointment of Usman was routine, and not as a result media management by current spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, as alleged by an online publication.
Usman proceeded to NIPSS for the executive course in January, 2018
Chukwu, who had been the spokesman of the army until now is to proceed to the same institute for same course with immediate effect.
The Directorate of Army Public Relations said in the statement that its attention was drawn to the publication which alleged that “Army reportedly removes Texas Chukwu, re-appoints Usman.’’
“The Directorate wishes to state categorically that the report is not only malicious but an attempt by the writer to tarnish the reputation of the senior officer which he has built over the years in the course of his career as well as misleading members of the public.
“The write-up further alleged that his removal followed outcry from different quarters on his “inability” to manage information on counter-insurgency campaign, which is completely untrue and unsubstantiated.
“Consequently, the directorate wishes to state that the writer has only succeeded in exhibiting his ignorance or complete lack of knowledge about postings and appointments in the Nigerian Army.
The directorate, therefore, call on the online medium to “advise the reporter to cultivate the habit of verifying facts as well as balancing his report before rushing to the press.’’
“The medium is requested to tender an unreserved apology to the senior officer as well as the Directorate of Army Public Relations through the same medium within 24 hours or be ready to face legal action,’’ the statement said. (NAN)

Microsoft Corp’s stock market value closed above Apple Inc’s for the first time in eight years on Friday as the Windows maker benefited from growth in cloud computing while Apple was hit by investor concern about iPhone demand.
Shares of Microsoft rose 0.6 percent to end the week at $110.89, putting its market capitalisation at $851.2 billion. Apple shares fell 0.5 percent to $178.58 on the day, adding up to a market value of $847.4 billion.
The two stocks jostled for the top spot over the course of the week, with Microsoft’s stock market value exceeding Apple’s at several points in intra-day trading but not at the close.
Both companies’ market capitalisations were calculated using outstanding shares reported in their most recent 10-Q filings.
Apple’s market capitalisation overtook Microsoft’s in 2010 as Microsoft struggled with slow demand for personal computers, due in part to the explosion of smartphones like the iPhone.
After Satya Nadella took over as chief executive in 2014, Microsoft reduced its reliance on Windows software for PCs and became a major player in cloud computing, second only to Amazon.comInc.
In recent months, technology shares have been punished by investors worried about rising interest rates and the potential consequences of the U.S.-China trade war.
Apple shares are now 19.6 percent lower than on Nov. 1, when the company warned after the regular session that holiday-quarter sales would likely miss Wall Street expectations.
Global demand for smartphones has slowed in recent years.
Thirty-three analysts recommend buying Microsoft’s stock, with just one sell rating and one neutral, according to Refinitiv data.
Twenty-five analysts have positive ratings on Apple, 16 are neutral and none recommend selling, the data show.
Analysts on average expect Microsoft’s revenue to increase 12.7 percent for its fiscal year 2019 ending in June, compared with an estimated 5 percent rise for Apple’s fiscal 2019, which ends in Sept, according to the Refinitiv data.
