The Latest Reality Metro also reports that promoted are 7 Heads of Departments (HODs) to the post of Vice Principals.

Dr Bamidele Iwalokun, a  medical researcher with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in  Yaba, Lagos, has called for stiffer regulation of slimming drugs to safeguard the health of consumers.
Iwalokun  made the call in an interview with the Latest Reality Metro in Lagos on Sunday.
He  said there was the need for evidence of safety, effectiveness and approval from drug regulatory agencies in the country before such products are sold or consumed.
”The mechanism of action of these drugs and pills should be known, but people lack this awareness and that is where the concern lies.
”We are now in an era where medicine is evidence-based. So, any medicine without evidence is not worth taking.
”Therefore, the habit of taking slimming drugs without evidence of safety or effectiveness is not a good practice.
”There are various mechanisms through which one can slim, one of which is these drugs which confer slimming benefits with the fact that they have high cellulose content which fills the stomach, thereby taking away appetite for food  which can increase body weight.
”This is a good mechanism. Nevertheless, it is important to know the amount of cellulose in the drug  because there are some that have the ability of converting slimming to modulating Leptin activity.
”Leptin is a hormone produced by the adipose tissue which signals the brain on when to eat and it works with the energy status of the body.
”Though  some fat people have lost this signaling ability of Leptin, but there are also drugs that can correct  this loss and reduce their glutton behaviour toward  food, thereby restricting dietary intake which is exactly what some of these slimming drugs do.
”Some of these slimming drugs have claims of being able to break down fats, especially those stored in the adipose tissue and abdominal region for those that have central obesity.
”This probably promotes uptake and breakdown of lipids in the liver, thereby reducing body fat content.
”All these are possible mechanisms used by the manufacturers of these drugs to confer their slimming ability, but we want evidence and documentation on safety; mechanism of reaction and efficacy tests carried out on such products, ” he said.
Iwalokun, therefore, urged regulatory agencies to rise up to their mandate by ensuring the authenticity and efficacy of such slimming drugs before they flood the market.
He cited the concerned   agencies to include  the National Agency for Food and  Drug Administration and Control and the Standards Organisation Of Nigeria.
Others he mentioned,  include the Federal Institute of Industrial Research and the NIMR.
He also urged the agencies to organise awareness and enlightenment programmes to educate the public on the health risks of consuming unprescribed and unapproved slimming drugs.
According to him, any product that does not meet the required standard should be taken off the market to save lives.

The technical committee on Nigeria Yam Export Programme is working with the University of Agriculture, Umudike and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to produce seed yams for export.
The committee was charged with the responsibilities of finding markets for Nigerian yams in the world and providing market information on weekly prices of yam at the major marketing centres abroad.
Prof. Simon Irtwang, the programmes’ chairman told the Latest Reality Metro in Lagos that the seed yams would be given to farmers to plant them specifically for export.
“One of the challenges with the flag-off of yams exported in June 2017 was that the yams were exposed to the sun before being selected for export.
“Once yams are exposed in the sun for long, the process of decaying sets in gradually.
“With special seed yams, the structures to have a good quality of seed yams for export will be set in motion.
“This will help and ensure that future yam exports withstands the temperatures of all the countries the yams will be sent to,’’ he said.
Irtwang said that the technical committee would consider the post-harvest handling of yams for export to ensure they meet international standard.
He, however, added that not all yams were good enough for export.
“There are some species and varieties of yams that are good for export and in the open market; the yams are always separated from each other.
Irtwang said that yam exporters have to be familiar with the processes of handling as well as the other varieties and species not good for export.

The Enugu State Police Command has embarked on “Know Your Neighbour’’ campaign and released hotlines as measures to curb crimes.
The command released hotlines – 08032003702, 08075390883, 08086671202 and 08098880172 – for residents to report any suspicious person, movement or gathering.
The command also released its social media platforms – nigeriapoliceenugustatecommand for Facebook; @PoliceNG enugu for Twitter handle and enugustatepolice@gmail.com for email.
The command said on Saturday that residents should endeavour to know their neighbours and friends properly in order to enhance security in the state.
Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, the Command’s spokesman, told the NAN after the command’s monthly jogging/walking session in Enugu.
He said that in recent times, people have been implicated in various crimes related to their friends or neighbours.
“It is now obvious that most people are implicated in a crime due to their negligence to know who they call their friends and neighbours.
“This is especially when residents are complacent on reporting a suspicious character around them,’’ he said.
The spokesman also urged the residents to desist from going around always with their ATM cards.
“ATM cards should only be on one when he or she is sure of making bank withdrawals.
“It has been observed that in recent time, hoodlums target the ATM cards, forcefully get the pin-code from their victims and immediately withdraws all money in the victim’s account,’’ he said.
On the jog/walk exercise, Amaraizu said it had built comradeship and synergy between police, other security agencies as well as corporate organisations.
“This monthly routine exercise will also keep officers and men of the command agile and combat-ready,’’ he said.
Mr Ikem Odenigbo, the Media Officer of National Orientation Agency (NOA), noted that the exercise session was a good development.
“I will personally recommend this exercise and other forms of exercises to civil servants, who due to the nature of their work, are living a sedentary life-style,’’ Odenigbo said.
Our correspondent reports that the exercise covered 12 km through Ridge Way, Okpara Avenue, Prisons Way, Camp Road, Zik Avenue and terminated at Agbani Road within the city of Enugu. NAN/LR News

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party known as the ‘Fresh PDP’ has dropped its threat to form a parallel National Working Committee of the party in Abuja on Monday (tomorrow )

One of the leaders of the group, Mr. Olukayode Akindele, stated this on behalf of the faction after its meeting with a former National Chairman of the party, Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo in Abuja on Saturday.

Akindele said it was time to cease fire.

Apart from Akindele, other members of the group at the meeting included Duru Ihuoma and Franklyne Edede.

The faction was formed to protest the result of the party’s national convention held on December 9, 2017, where Secondus was elected national chairman of the PDP.

The group had vowed that it would announce members of its NWC in Abuja on January 22.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Akindele who presented a list of what the group called the ‘authentic NWC’ members in an envelope to Nwodo, said they had decided to sheath their sword in the interest of Nigeria and the 2019 general elections.

In his reaction to the development, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan said, “What was perceived as crisis is over.”

Meanwhile, the national leadership of the party has lifted the one month suspension it placed on Senator Buruji Kashamu.

Kashamu was suspended for one month from the party in December 2017.

The party also referred his case to the Governor Seriake Dickson-led Reconciliation Committee.

Some youth groups in the Middle Belt and southern part of Nigeria have vowed to resist the incursion of the dreaded Fulani herdsmen into their regions.

They have therefore urged the various state governors in the North-Central, South-West, South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones to offer necessary support to their members.

The militia groups, whose leaders spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH on Friday, included Agbekoya Farmers Association, Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra and the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Others are the National Council of Tiv Youths, Middle Belt Youth Council and the Middle Belt Forum (Youth Wing).

We’re well prepared to defend Yoruba land –Agbekoya

The National Publicity Secretary of the Agbekoya Farmers Association, Chief Olatunji Bandele, said the group was prepared to defend the South-West against herdsmen’s attacks.

Bandele stated, “The Agbekoya Farmers Association of Nigeria, founded in 1938, has now established the Agbekoya Vigilante Group, a security outfit, to secure our farmlands and crops.

“The Fulani herdsmen should steer clear of the South-West if their mission is to come and kill innocent citizens.

“Agbekoya is now ready to defend the South-West, especially our farmers, their families, farmlands and crops.”

Armed herdsmen are terrorists—MASSOB

Also, MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, said his group had perfected arrangements to resist attempts by the northern elite to use armed herdsmen to secure a second term for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Madu said, “MASSOB and other pro-Biafra groups represent the genuine interest of the Ndigbo which can never be denied. The Igbo leaders are not afraid to support or collaborate with Biafra agitating groups for the betterment of Igbo land and her people.”

Also, MASSOB’s Director of Information, who spoke on behalf of the group’s founder, Ralph Uwazuruike, said the group would insist on a free state of Biafra to enable the Igbo to deal with the criminal invasion by herdsmen wielding AK-47 rifles, arrows, machetes and other dangerous weapons.

“They have attacked almost all parts of the country with impunity. They are not hiding; they boast and walk freely on the streets without the Federal Government doing anything.”

In the same vein, IPOB, through its spokesman, Emma Powerful, told one of our correspondents that it had issued notices to herdsmen to vacate Igbo land since their mission was to cause mayhem.

We have signed our death warrants – Middle Belt Youths

In the same vein, the President of the National Council of Tiv Youths, Dr. John Akperashi, said his members had resolved to shed their blood to resist further attacks by the dreaded herdsmen.

He said, “The battle line has been drawn. The youths in the Middle Belt are ready and have agreed to rise up in unison to reject the Federal Government time bomb dressed in white robes.

“The Tiv youths particularly are pushed to the wall now and have collectively signed their death warrants, ready to pay the supreme price if that would count, to sustain and protect our lands from any form of colonisation, be it cattle, human or both.”

FG encouraging self-help, says M’Belt Council

Also, the President, Middle Belt Youth Council, who is also the youth leader of the Middle Belt Forum, Emma Zopmal, said by its inaction, the Federal Government was telling the Middle Belt youths to resort to self-help.

He said, “We cannot sit and watch this manslaughter on a daily basis. Life does not have a duplicate and it should not be allowed to be wasted needlessly all the time. The days of mourning will soon be over in the Middle Belt.

“The Fulani are only 4.7 million in Nigeria. How then can they continue being a threat to the whole nation of more than 160 million people that are not Fulani? Enough is enough; we are now poised for war.”
