A man accused of being a member of a far-right extremist group on Tuesday admitted buying a machete with the intention of killing an elected member of the British parliament.
Jack Renshaw changed his plea to guilty ahead of the start of a trial at London’s Old Bailey court involving himself and five other men accused of being members of the white supremacist neo-Nazi group National Action.
The British government banned the group in 2016 following the murder of Jo Cox, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the opposition Labour Party, in a frenzied street attack by a Nazi-obsessed loner a week before a referendum on EU membership.
The court heard that Renshaw had bought a machete with the intention of killing Rosie Cooper, another female Labour MP.
Renshaw also admitted a charge of threatening another man with a view to his killing a woman, believing that the murder would take place.
In the event, the crime did not happen. Reuters/LR News

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has said that he had accepted President Muhammadu Buhari’s apology to the Abiola family on behalf of all Nigerians.

He stated this on Tuesday during the Special National Honours Investiture in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

“Most of what I wanted to say has actually been yanked off my throat by one singular gesture – the presidential apology,” he said.

“But the apology has been most touching. On behalf of the Nigerian people, I accept (the apology) and I am sure that most Nigerians will agree with me.”

Soyinka also called on the Federal Government to create a Hall of Shame just as it celebrates distinguished Nigerians in the Hall of Fame.

He added, “Today perhaps is also a day to inaugurate our Hall of Shame so that as we have our Hall of Heroes in one hand, we also have our Hall of Shame as a lesson to future generations,” he said.

His comments come at a time the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the presumed winner of the 1993 Presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, Nobel Laureate.

According to the Nobel Laureate, the conferment of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) by President Muhammadu Buhari on Chief Abiola does not mark the end of the June 12 struggle.

He stated further: “It is a beginning. I do not believe that this is the closure of the events of June 12. There are far too many traumatized individuals walking around the streets as a result of the policies and attitudes of one of the most brutal dictators that this nation has ever known.”

The Nobel Laureate further advised President Muhammadu Buhari to stop admiring and displaying loyalty to an unnamed individual whom he referred to late MKO Abiola’s “Tormentor-in-Chief.”

However, his comment has been sparked with a mixed reaction as some are of the opinion that he had referred to the late Head of State, Sani Abacha, while others believe the professor referred to General Ibrahim Babangida, the former Head of State that annulled Abiola’s election.

Soyinka also criticized the Federal Government in its corruption fight after alleging that a major road in the Federal Capital Territory is named after a former Nigerian leader he described as being corrupt. LR News
