The Chairman of Innoson Motors Nigeria Limited, Innocent Chukuwuma has for the fourth time refused to show up in court for his arraignment despite a bench warrant ordered against them.

Innoson failed to show up in court to take his plea for fraud charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

At the hearing, the prosecutor, however, expressed optimism that he would be in court in the next two days.

An argument ensued between the defence and prosecution over whether or not the defendants pending application should be heard first before the recommendation from National Judicial Commission (NJC), would suffice as to the jurisdiction of the Justice Mojisola Dada over the charge.

Earlier, the defendant had petitioned the NJC over Justice Mojisola Dada’s jurisdiction on hearing Innoson’s fraud charge.

The bubble burst as the defence counsel to one of the defendants, Professor J.N Mbadugha made an attempt to move a pending application rejected at the last sitting on March 14, 2018.

Professor J.N Mbadugha was in the process of citing a point of law that could pave way for the hearing of his client’s application even when the Chairman of the company was not in the dock, Mr A. B. C Ozioko, the lead prosecuting counsel of the EFCC objected to his procedure.

During Professor J.N Mbadugha’s argument on behalf of his client, the judge explained that she was waiting for the directive of the NJC in case of any possible recommendation to withdraw from hearing the case.

But Professor J.N Mbadugha frowned that the judge was engaging him in an unnecessary discussion.

The judge adjourned the matter to 24th May 2018 for the possible arraignment of the defendants.

Suspected armed herdsmen have killed 16 persons in Ali Agundu and Tsav council wards of Guma Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.

The separate attacks, which were carried out on both settlements simultaneously, took place barely one day after two priests and 17 other people were killed in Gwer East LGA of the state.

Chairman of Guma LGA, Mr Anthony Shawon, confirmed to Channels Television that the attacks occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.

Mr Shawon revealed that the assailants stormed Ali Agundu, a border settlement with Daudu where two Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps are located, at about 2.00 am and killed 13 persons.

He added that while this was ongoing, another set of suspected armed herdsmen killed three people in Tsav council ward, also in the LGA.

The chairman said the remains of those killed were buried hours later.

However, police authorities in the state have yet to confirm the incident.

On Tuesday, suspected armed herdsmen invaded Ayar-Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of the state, killing 19 people.

The Commissioner of Police in Benue, Mr Fatai Owoseni, who briefed reporters hours later, said about 30 assailants, whose targets were the priests and the venue of a burial ceremony, invaded the community.

He had, however, noted that the police would intensify their search of the assailants, and called on residents to provide useful information that can lead to the arrest of the attackers.

The deputy governor of the state, Mr Benson Abounu, had also reacted to Tuesday’s attack, saying it was another black day in the history of the state.

“We are under siege and I do believe that this has gone beyond the normal herdsmen-farmers crisis; this is a new dimension of attack and it has never happened before.

“What we are having at the moment is an attack by insurgents and these insurgents could come from any source, any background,” Abounu had said when he visited the scene of the earlier attack. LR News

The members of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaign have called for the removal of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.

A co-convener of BBOG, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, made the demand on behalf of the group on Tuesday during a protest in Abuja.

She accused the police authorities of deploying armed police personnel in the area to disperse citizens who were calling for democratic accountability.

“Why is the Nigeria Police stationed at the Unity Fountain against the Bring Back Our Girls movement? We want answers, the IG of police must be sacked for this,” Ezekwesili said.

According to her, the police officials came with canisters of tear gas and other materials that can be harmful to the human body.

The BBOG co-convener alleged that police used the materials to disperse members of the group whom she insisted were carrying out their constitutional responsibility.

She noted the latest attack in Benue State where 11 worshippers and two priests were killed by suspected armed herdsmen in Gwer East Local Government Area of the state.

Ezekwesili decried that instead of the police to focus more on how to tackle the matter and other burning issues in the country, they were dispersing peaceful protesters.

The BBOG had claimed that its members were attacked by the police on Monday while holding a sit-out at the Unity Fountain in the nation’s capital.

The area was barricaded with tape on Tuesday, as the police surrounded the area to ensure the barricade was not broken.

In a show of defiance, members of the group, however, continued their sit-out outside the barricade.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it will commence the verification of signatures of those seeking the recall of Sen. Dino Melaye on April 28.

INEC Federal Commissioner, Mr Mohammed Haruna, made the disclosure at a stakeholders meeting on Wednesday in Lokoja over the commencement of the recall process.

He explained that the verification exercise would hold in 552 polling units in seven local governments under Kogi West senatorial district.

According to him, the verification will hold from 8 am to 2 p.m. using the card reading machines to authenticate the voter cards of those that signed the recall petition.

“Only those who signed the petition are expected to turn up at their polling units for verification,” Haruna said.

Also speaking, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Prof. James Apam said that local observers would be allowed to monitor the exercise.

He explained, however, that the verification exercise will not hold in eight polling units as no petition was received from them.

The REC said that no party agents would be allowed access to any of the polling units, adding that the result of the exercise will be announced on April 29.

“We have concluded all arrangements in line with our schedule of activities and are set for the exercise.

“The adhoc staff have been trained at the state and local government levels and materials procured and sent to the registration area centres ready for movement to the polling units on the day of verification,” Apam explained.

The Latest Reality Metro reports that the stakeholders meeting was attended by representatives of registered political parties, civil society organisations, media, police, army, civil defence and other paramilitary organisations.

As was expected, the Nigerian Senate cut short its plenary session today to visit embattled Senator Dino Melaye at the National Hospital in Abuja.
It also summoned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to appear before it on Thursday to face its scrutiny over the treatment of one of their members, Dino Melaye.
This happened after many of the Senators had taken turns to attack the Police and the executive for what they termed as the ill-treatment of the senator representing Kogi West in the upper chamber.
The swash-buckling and voluble Melaye turned himself over to the police on Tuesday, to face trial for allegedly supplying arms to two thugs in his home state of Kogi. But while he was being taken to Lokoja for trial, he jumped out of a police vehicle, in traffic, after two Hilux vans had blocked the police vehicle.
According to the video in circulation, the police were cautious in applying maximum force and allowed those they called ‘miscreants and hoodlum’, to take him away, in an ambulance to a clinic in Mabushi area of Abuja. Moments after, the police came calling again to remove him to the National Hospital, with a promise to arraign him ‘without any further delay”.
He was initially declared wanted after he snubbed a court appearance on 28 March in Lokoja, the same day, the two thugs, then in police detention vanished dramatically from their cells.
The police got another trial date for May, after re-arresting the suspects, along with four others.
But Melaye snubbed police invitations, until he was arrested by the Nigerian Immigration Service on Monday morning at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, while preparing to board a flight to Morocco, for what he called a Federal Government assignment.
On Wednesday, it was Senator Sam Anyawu who first spoke on the incident that occurred yesterday, saying that Melaye was treated as a common criminal. Anyanwu also told his colleagues that he and some other senators were denied access to Dino in the National Hospital.
Senator Chukwuka Utazi said Melaye has rights and throwing a jibe at the police, said “coercion will not work”.
“Due process should be followed if anyone seeks to oppose.”
“It was only an allegation against Senator Melaye and since the matter is still in court, he should not be forced to go to Kogi,” Senator Isah Misau, himself a former police officer, said.
Senator Aliero Adamu condemned the manner of Melaye’s arrest. He said the SARS(the Special Anti-Robbery Squad) of the police embarrassed the distinguished senator as he was like a common criminal.
“If this can happen to a serving Senator, Democracy is being rubbished,”Aliero said.
Senator Shehu Sani, the human rights activist in the chambers stated his concern about the state of the country and that all should remember there is no permanence in power.
“What happened to Senator Dino Melaye is an abuse of power”, Sani said.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu from Lagos also condemned Melaye’s arrest and she was also against the arrest of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, last week by the police. “If Senators Melaye and Ovie Omo-Agege can be taken away by the police, it destroys the sanctity of this chamber,” she submitted.
“The people look to the Senate for protection. The average man needs protection just as we do,” Tinubu, who is the wife of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress added.
“We did not vote this Government to abuse democracy. I condemn shameful act totally. We should invite all those involved to speak to us and this case openly to the public”, Senator Ubali Shitu suggested.
At the end of the contributions, Senate President Bukola Saraki said: “I think that the information Senate Leader wanted to pass, is that this morning, we were very concerned and we have sent our Deputy Leader out to go and look for him, but with the motions that I can see, it has gone beyond us sending representatives.”
“I can appreciate the motions that have transpired in that area. The issue of the IGP briefing us should be immediate and that should be tomorrow and the DG and Chairman of Police should do that,” Saraki added.
Moments after, the Senate shut down to visit Melaye in the National Hospital, Abuja.

National Christian Centre, Abuja

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is planning to embark on peaceful protest and prayers against unending killings and freedom of Leah Sharibu and Chibok schools girls on Sunday, April 29.

CAN made the declaration in a statement following the killing of two Catholic priests; Rev.Fr Joseph Gor, Rev.Fr Felix Tyolaha and 17 worshippers of St. Ignatius Quasi Parish, Ukpor-Mbalom, Gwer East LGA of Benue State.

The statement signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the CAN President, Rev Samson Ayokunle, on Wednesday in Abuja, described the killing as an Anomie.

He said that the protest is going to hold in every church’s premises to ask the Federal Government and the security agencies to stop the unending killings and bloodshed in the country.

Oladeji urges all and sundry to continue to pray for peace and tranquility of Nigeria and most importantly, for the parents and relations of all abducted school children.

He called on Christians to also pray for the bereaved families of those attacked by the Boko Haram terrorists, armed herdsmen, bandits and other criminals.

He reminded Christians across the federation the importance of the forthcoming general elections and the need for them to fully participate by going to obtain their voters cards.

The cleric noted that Christians were expected to carry placards on April 29 with inscriptions meant to address issues about sustained killings, attacks and destruction of their property in Nigeria.

The inscriptions on placards would read enough of bloodshed in Nigeria; enough of unlawful killings in the country, FG, Release Leah Sharibu from bondage, FG, Stop Herdsmen Killings and CAN reject insecurity.
CAN President, Dr Olasupo Ayokunle

“We call upon the government to perform their constitutional responsibility of protecting citizens now.

“No excuse should be given for this wicked act again and perpetrators must be brought to book now,’’ he said.

Oladeji appealed to the government to mount different effective plans aimed at disarming herdsmen across the northern states and in communities where they have been wreaking havoc across the country.

He noted that the failure to raise an effective campaign against the killings by herdsmen was the reason they have continued to kill, adding that there was need for visible plan to pacify the aggrieved.

He also called on the heads of the security agencies to wake up to their constitutional role of protecting lives and property across the federation.

The CAN official stressed the need for the government to prevent Nigeria from descending into a lawless country.

He recalled with pains, disappointments, and worries how Nigerians in the North East, Middle Belt and southern parts of Nigeria became endangered with attacks from Boko Haram, herders and bandits.

“It contends that such developments are not only inimical to the progress and development of Nigeria, they will continue to weaken the unity of the country, if left unchecked,’’ he said.

The National Association of the Nigerian Students (NANS), has condemned the killing of two Rev. Fathers and 19 others in Benue by suspected herdsmen.
The NANS National Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Bestman Okereafor, gave this condemnation in a statement issued in Enugu on Wednesday.
Okereafor said Nigerian students received with shock and sadness the gruesome killings and burning down of more than 35 houses at a Catholic Church in Ukpor-Mbalom community, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue by the suspects.
“The Federal Government should understand that the peace of a nation determines the level of its development and progress.
“We see the constant attacks and killings by suspected herdsmen and Boko Haram as barbaric and satanic acts, which no doubt remains a serious threat to the peaceful co-existence of Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.
“This is most capable of causing a religious war,’’ he said.
The PRO said that NANS, however,” extends its sincere condolences to the government and people of Benue, Mbalom community.
“As well as the lord Bishop, priests and members of the St. Ignatius’ Catholic Church, whose premises was the unfortunate venue of the heinous killings.
“NANS is calling on the Federal Government to listen to the voice of Nigerian students and citizens by declaring the marauding herdsmen as terrorists.
“As we have previously requested in our series of press releases, the military should also handle them as such,’’ he said.
The marauding herdsmen early on Tuesday, killed 19 persons, including Reverend Fathers Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha during a morning Mass while many others sustained injuries. LR News

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has alerted students, security agencies and the general public to the circulation of fake examination questionnaire purportedly from the institution on social media.
Ibrahim Sheme, NOUN’s Director, Media and Publicity, in statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said the questionnaire did not emanate from the institution and urged the public to disregard it.
`The attention of NOUN has been drawn to a publication in the social media in which a purported examination questionnaire titled “School of Education Course Code GST 103” was circulated as a document emanating from the University.
“ In the fake exam sheet, four questions were posed, built around President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent statement on the Nigerian youth. Each question was said to attract 30 marks if answered correctly.
“The so-called examination questionnaire issued by “Henry Osas” had nothing to do with NOUN as all our exams were concluded long before His Excellency the President’s visit to the United Kingdom where he delivered the speech Osas quoted.
“Even though some might consider the document invented and circulated by “Henry Osas” and his co-travellers as a mere social media joke, we believe that the use of the hallowed name of the National Open University of Nigeria and its official logo to transmit the joke was done with mischief.’’
He said that the institution took serious exception to the use of its well-respected identity for such unpatriotic and unbecoming behaviour.
Sheme added that NOUN had filed a formal complaint with the security agencies with a plea to fish out the culprit(s) behind this mischief with the view to taking the appropriate legal action against them.

US surgeons team from Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore

For the first time, a team of US surgeons from Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, has managed to transplant the penis and the scrotum from a deceased donor to a recipient who had lost his genital organs during armed service.
According to a report by Medical News Today, the surgeons had been planning such an intervention since 2013.
In the telebriefing statement of the institution’s genitourinary programme, the programmme’s clinical director, Dr. Rick Redett, called the procedure “the culmination of more than 5 years of research and collaboration across multiple disciplines.”

The successful transplant was performed last month on a United States war veteran who lost his genital organs after the unexpected explosion of an improvised explosive device, MNT reported.
This diagram illustartes the penis and scrotum transplant performed by the Johns Hopkins surgeons.

“It’s a real mind-boggling injury to suffer, it is not an easy one to accept,” confesses the recipient, who prefers to preserve his anonymity.
The transplant, he says, finally gives him back a measure of confidence and stability.
“When I first woke up [after the intervention], I felt finally more normal… [and with] a level of confidence as well. Confidence… like finally I’m okay now,” he explains.
The surgery, which lasted 14 hours, was performed by a large team of doctors, anesthetists, and nurses led by Dr. W. P. Andrew Lee, the director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
During the procedure, the penis, surrounding tissue, and scrotum — though not the testicles — of a deceased donor were grafted onto the recipient. This complex type of transplant surgery is called “vascularized composite allotransplantation.”
“The damaged and scarred tissues,” says Dr. Redett in his telebriefing statement, “were removed from our patient and the necessary blood vessels and nerves were identified.”
“For the transplant,” he adds, “three arteries, four veins, and two nerves were connected under the microscope to provide complete blood perfusion and sensation to the transplanted tissue.”

Dr. Lee notes that the recipient “is recovering well,” and that he is following an immune modulation protocol — which also involved a bone marrow transplant from the donor — in order to ensure that his body does not reject the transplanted organ and tissue.
The surgeon also expresses his hope that the patient will make a good recovery, and that he might eventually regain both urinary and sexual function, almost to the full extent.
We are hopeful that this transplant will help restore near-normal urinary and sexual functions for this young man.”
Dr. W. P. Andrew Lee
The family of the deceased donor have also released a statement, expressing their wishes that the recipient would make a full and steady recovery, and saying that they are glad to know that their loved one has contributed to changing someone’s life so radically for the better.
“We are all very proud that our loved one was able to help a young man that served this country,” they say.
And, in a direct address to the recipient, they say, “We hope you can return to better health very soon and we continue to wish you a speedy recovery.” LR News
