Anthony Joshua is now the holder of 4 heavyweight belts
Britain’s Anthony Joshua retained his world heavyweight titles by inflicting the first stoppage defeat of Alexander Povetkin’s professional career with a ruthless seventh-round finish at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
A previously close contest turned in Joshua’s favour decisively when he sent the Russian crashing to the canvas with a straight right hand and left hook.
Povetkin gamely beat the count but Joshua piled in before referee Steve Gray stopped the contest at one minute and 59 seconds of the seventh round.
Victory saw Joshua extend his unbeaten professional record to 22 wins from 22 fights, with 21 knockouts, in front of a raucous home crowd.
“Povetkin is a very tough challenger and he proved it tonight,” Joshua told Sky Sports.
“I realised he was strong to the head but weak to the body.
“I got my knockout streak back, I found my right hand again.”
Joshua was putting his International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation belts on the line against 39-year-old Russian challenger Povetkin.
This fight was the latest in a line of professional heavyweight title bouts, featuring the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, between two former Olympic champions, with Joshua having won gold in front of his home crowd at the 2012 London Games — eight years after Povetkin stood atop the podium in Athens.
Joshua, 28, had a significant height and reach advantage of several inches over Povetkin.
Friday’s weigh-in also confirmed a significant size difference, with Joshua tipping the scales at 17 stone 8 pounds (111.5 kilogrammes) compared to Povetkin’s 15st 12lbs.
This fight saw Joshua returning to the scene of arguably his greatest triumph, an 11th-round stoppage of former champion Wladimir Klitschko last year.
Klitschko was the only man to have previously inflicted a blemish on Povetkin’s now 36-fight record, with a points win back in 2013.
Joshua, born in nearby Watford but based in London, had been taken the distance for the first time as a professional in his last title defence — a unanimous points victory over New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in Cardiff in March.
The undercard of that fight saw Povetkin serve notice of his formidable punching power with a sickening knockout of Britain’s David Price.
Povetkin, who in 2016 was given an indefinite ban from boxing after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium that was later cut to a year, had insisted in the build-up he was a far stronger fighter than the one beaten by Klitschko.
And the first round ended with Povetkin, stooping low, rocking Joshua with a right uppercut that drew blood from the champion’s nose.
Joshua, who said Thursday that “my well is deep, my heart can definitely go through hell and back”, was certainly being tested in the opening exchanges, although he did start to respond with some single-punch jabs.
And come the fourth round, Povetkin had a significant cut above the left eye.
Nevertheless, at the end of the sixth he was still in the contest only for Joshua to seal victory barely two minutes later.
But whether this win takes Joshua any closer to a fight with World Boxing Council heavyweight title-holder Deontay Wilder, who next fights Britain’s former world champion Tyson Fury on December 1, remains to be seen.
“My number one would be Wilder,” said Joshua, whose promoter Eddie Hearn has already booked Wembley for April 13, when asked about his next opponent.
“May the champion bring himself here and have a good old fashioned dust-up.
“All I want to fight is serious challengers. If Dillian (Whyte) wants to fight here he is also more than welcome.”
Joshua beat compatriot Whyte with a seventh-round knockout in December 2015 — his last fight before becoming a world champion for the first time
Whyte, who was among an estimated 80,000 crowd at Wembley, said of Joshua’s latest victory: “He was patient and took his time, he was jabbing to the body and then brought the right into play which caught Povetkin by surprise.
“Hopefully, it’s me next, I’m here and ready to fight.”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Saturday commissioned new power transformers at Okpella substation to boost electricity supply to Edo north, especially in major towns of Auchi, Okpella and Igarra.
The 1x60MVA ,132,33kv power transformer would also service some major towns in Estako, and Akoko Edo local governments.
TCN had also successfully installed 40MVA at Auchi 132, 33kv substation.
The new installation at Okpella was to improve on the old 1x15MVA,132/33Kv substation which had limited capacity to adequately supply electricity to Okpella, BUA cement company, Aghenebode town and environs.
Because of the limitation, TCN awarded the contract for the reinforcement of the substation in 2012 to Messers Power Control and Appliances (PCA) to add 1×60 MVA,13/33kv transformer to increase the quality of supply in the area.
The Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC), Prof. James Momoh, commissioned the transformer in company of Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo.
He said communities in Edo north had been experiencing poor electricity supply over the years.
He said that this had impacted negatively on the industrial development of the zone and the state in general.
“The villages around here witness low voltage, meaning there is no impact in development, it cannot touch industrialisation that we want because the quality of supply is very low.
“Because we are unable to harness power, industries cannot spring up in Edo, where we have all the vegetation, we have all the minerals.
“The lop-sidedness in supply made it very impossible for distribution to get to our villages.“
He explained that the provision of the new additional power transformer in the substation was for the interest of the Edo people, adding that the Okpella community must maintain and protect the facility.
“It will serve Okpella cement factory, it will serve other people, but we want to make sure we create jobs, we create industries. It will bring relief to our people; it will transform the economy of the state.“
Momoh, who promised to ensure improved power supply in Edo also commended TCN management and its in-house engineers for installing the power transformer.
“TCN engineers have done many installations in the country, they are saving money for Nigeria.“
Responding, Obaseki said that the initiative of TCN had just ignited the starting of industrial revolution in the state.
“We thanked TCN and NERC for what they are doing in the electricity industry.
“The issue of electricity supply was at the front burner during my campaign and you have help up spark up electricity supply via this initiative by increasing the capacity of the substation with over 300 per cent.
He said that the state government would continue to support TCN in the discharge of its duties, especially on resolving the onerous challenge of right of way on transmission lines.
He appealed to NERC to prevail on Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to improve its supply to customers, saying that BEDC was underperforming in the state.
The Managing Director of TCN, Mr Usman Mohammed said that the installation of the 60MVA 132,33kv in Okpella was consistent with the industrial policy of Edo government.
He attributed it to the existence of huge mineral deposits like limestone in the area.
He said that the installation would improve power supply to BUA cement company, Aghenebode town, Igara and many other communities in the state.
According to Mohammed, the installation of the 1x60MVA at Okpella substation will also increase the total wheeling capacity of TCN to 7,124MW.
He said that TCN would soon complete the installation of another 30MVA on the station and re-conduct the Benin, Irua Auchi, Okpella, and Okene 132 substations.
He said that this would enable the optimum use of the capacity being installed on the Okpella station.
“We are adding 100MVA at Irua, 150MVA at Benin, and another 100MVA at Benin transmission station,’’ he said. LR News

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has resolved to be an aspirant on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to compete with Adamawa governor Muhammadu Bindow for the 2019 election.
Ribadu said he decided to challenge Bindow because the governor had not provided concrete service to the people.
He told party official at the state secretariat on Saturday in Yola, that Bindow performed below expectation, as such the APC needs a new face to make a difference.
“Give me the chance and opportunity to make the difference. Our dear state is facing a number of developmental challenges that require urgent, holistic and strategic handling.
“We do not need cosmetics, which do not address fundamental issues that are cornerstone to our development as a people. It takes visionary leadership with capacity and modern thinking to provide that needed redirection, beyond deceptive makeup.
“It is this much-needed leadership that I promise to offer to our people. I come with genuine intention and I have a burning passion to change the fortunes of our people for good.
“With all sense of humility, I believe I possess the requisite credentials, both academic and character, required to move this state forward. I will run an all-inclusive government where all stakeholders like you truly have stakes,” Ribadu said.
He urged party officials to ensure level playing ground for all aspirants.
“As we move into the primaries, what we require from you, our party leaders, is utmost level of responsibility by allowing free and fair contest.
” We cannot afford to manipulate our party into failure. Injustice can never stand. Even if it does, it would be on shaky foundations which can collapse at any time.
“Therefore, skewing a process like the primaries to favour one person, even though unpopular, may only lead our great party to failure, something no genuine party member would desire.”
Responding, the Adamawa APC chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, lauded Ribadu for his commitment to the party and assured him and other aspirants of level playing field.
“I want to assure you of free and fair primaries and the commitment of the party executives to fully support any candidate that emerge,” Bilal said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that apart from Ribadu and Bindow, another aspirant, Dr Halilu Ahmed is also seeking the party’s endorsement to fly its flag for the governorship race. LR News

Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun has commended the large turnout of voters in Saturday’s governorship election in the state and praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for its smooth conduct.
Aregbesola spoke after casting his vote at 11:50 am at his Ifofin Ward 8, Unit 1 Polling Unit in Ilesa. He arrived the polling unit with his wife, Sherifat, at 11:38am.
The governor said the large turnout of voters and their peaceful conduct were signals about their desire to elect a leader of their choice.
”I must commend the voters for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner and for coming out in their large numbers. This is the beauty of democracy,’’ he said.
But Sen. Iyiola Omisore, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) lamented what he called irregularities in the conduct of the voting exercise.
Omisore, who spoke after voting at his Moore Ward 1, 003 Polling Unit at 11:25 am, alleged that there were insufficient electoral materials in some polling units in Osogbo.
He also claimed that the card readers were malfunctioning in some polling units in Ile-Ife.
Nevertheless, Omisore urged the voters to exercise their civic responsibility by trooping out to vote.
He also urged the electorate to refrain from vote-selling, saying they would be mortgaging their future.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there are 3,010 Polling Units and 755 Polling Points spread across the three senatorial districts and 30 local governments areas of the state.
Although there are a total of 1,682,495 registered voters, over 400,000 Permanent Voters Cards remain uncollected as at Friday.
NAN also reports that while 48 parties are participating in the election, Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party and Omisore of the Social Democratic Party remain the frontline candidates.

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday officially notified the investing public that Skye Bank Plc shares would be suspended from trading on Sept. 24.
The exchange gave the notice in Lagos in a statement by Mr Olumide Orojimi, Head, Corporate Communications and Mr Godstime Iwenekhai Head, Listings Regulations.
NSE said that the action was taken following the revoking of the operating licence of the bank by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exchange said that the decision was pursuant to the “Rules on Suspension of Trading in Listed Securities, Rulebook of The Exchange (Issuers’ Rules).”
It stated that further developments would be communicated as appropriate in due course.
CBN after revoking the bank’s licence transferred its assets and liabilities to a newly licensed bridge bank called Polaris Bank.
Mr Godwin Emefiele, CBN Governor, said at a news conference in Lagos that the decision was due to failure of its shareholders to recapitalise the bank.
Emefiele, however, said that the purpose of the CBN’s intervention in Skye Bank on July 4, 2016 had been achieved.
He said that the focus of the action then was to save depositors’ funds and to ensure that the bank continued as a growing concern, being a systemically important bank.
“Part of our intention was also to stem the imminent job losses to staff if a liquidation option had been adopted.
“These objectives have been fully achieved and the bank has been able to meet customer obligations, having curtailed the liquidity haemorrhage and restored depositor confidence.
Indeed, the bank’s performance has improved considerably compared to the pre-July 2016 era”, he said.
Emefiele said that the result of its examinations and forensic audit of the bank showed that the bank required urgent recapitalisation.
According to him, the bank can no longer continue to live on borrowed times with indefinite liquidity support from the CBN.
“As a responsible and responsive regulator and in consultation with the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), we have decided to establish a bridge bank, Polaris Bank, to assume the assets and liabilities of Skye bank.
“The strategy is for the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) to capitalise the bridge bank and begin the process of sourcing investors to buy out AMCON,” Emefiele said.
He, however, assured all depositors that under the arrangement, their deposits shall remain safe and that normal banking services shall continue in the new bank on Sept. 24.
The CBN governor said the arrangement was to enable customers to transact their businesses seamlessly.
He said that all customers of Skye Bank shall be automatic customers of the new bank and their accounts and records duly purchased by Polaris Bank.
NAN also reports that NDIC has sold Polaris Bank to the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) with the mandate to stabilise the bank as well as return it to profitability for the purpose of selling it to interested Investors.
Consequently, AMCON will inject N786 billion into Polaris Bank to bring it’s net value to zero.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Dominican Republic’s Chancellor Miguel Vargas shake hands after signing a bilateral agreement in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic September 21
China’s most senior envoy has inaugurated a new embassy in the Dominican Republic after the Caribbean country cut ties with Taiwan in a move that prompted U.S. concern over the Asian island’s dwindling number of allies.
Self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own, now has formal relations with only 17 countries, almost all of them small and less developed nations in Central America and the Pacific, including Belize and Nauru.
“We have witnessed a historic breakthrough,” capping 20 years of growing engagement, Chinese State Councillor Wang Yi, the government’s top diplomat, said in an speech televised by Chinese state media.
Along with the Dominican Republic’s decision in May, Panama and El Salvador have also switched recognition to Beijing in the past two years.
The United States recalled its top diplomats in those countries and warned that China was offering economic incentives in a bid for domination.
Tensions between the United States and countries in the region have flared over U.S. President Donald Trump’s hard line policies against immigration.
U.S. Ambassador Robin Bernstein said on Thursday, in her first public appearance back in the Dominican Republic, that she had been asked about China’s role in the region while in Washington, and that she hoped countries were considering their “long-term goals”.
In a statement on Thursday, the U.S. embassy in El Salvador lamented that countries in the region were deepening ties to “unfamiliar partners” and engaging in transactions that “lack transparency”.
Taiwan says China offered the Dominican Republic a $3.1 billion package of investments and loans to get them to sever ties, though China said there were no economic pre-conditions.
Wang said the Dominican Republic is China’s biggest trade partner in the Caribbean, setting the foundation for diplomatic ties.
“The Chinese developing economy and expanding market have brought real benefits to the Dominican Republic,” he said.
Wang, in a swipe at U.S. criticism, said that as a sovereign country, the Dominican Republic had the absolute right to decide its own foreign policy and that no other nation had the right to interfere.
“The Dominican Republic establishing diplomatic relations with China does not target any third party, does not affect each other’s foreign policy, and will not harm the traditional influence and legitimate rights of other countries in the region,” he added.
Wang will also visit Guyana and Suriname before speaking at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
