The Nigerian and Cameroonian army have killed 35 Boko Haram terrorists and rescued 603 civilians held hostage.
The joint operation was carried out as part of clearance exercise of troops of Operation Lafiya Dole in troubled North East.
Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director Public Relations, Theatre Command Operation of Lafiya Dole, said on Tuesday night that the troops took the battle to the terrorists.
The troops, he said, hit the enclaves of Boko Haram at Kusha-Kucha, Surdewala, Alkanerik, Magdewerne and Mayen villages, all situated in the Nigerian – Cameroonian border.
The troops destroyed 15 locally fabricated rifles captured from the Boko Haram fighters and destroyed 4 Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), several motorcycles and bicycles.
Nwachukwu explained that the combined troops also tracked insurgents to Bokko, Daushe and Gava villages, where they unleashed another attack on the fleeing insurgents.
In the process, two of them were killed in the fire-fight and recovered one AK 47 rifle, a magazine, a trolley and some quantity petrol in Jerry cans.
The rescued persons, he said, were undergoing profiling, preparatory to their handover to appropriate officials of Internally Displaced Persons, IDP.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday advised state governors to prioritise the establishment of cattle ranches before enacting anti-grazing laws, to avert conflict between farmers and herdsmen.
The IGP gave the advice in Kaduna State at the Northern States Stakeholders Security Summit, with the theme, ‘National Building: Security Challenges and the Need for Inclusive Approach”.
According to the IGP, the crisis in Benue would have been mitigated, if the state had first established grazing ranches before prohibiting open grazing.
He, however, disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari, had mandated the police to adopt strategies effective enough to end the recurring Herders/Farmers clashes in Nigeria.
“It is my humble suggestion that to reduce the incidence of clashes between farmers and herders in Nigeria, State Governments should endeavour to establish grazing ranches in their various states before enacting laws to prohibit open rearing and grazing.
“It is when grazing ranches are established that herders can be arrested and punished for rearing and grazing on the open places.
“Doing so, I am of the opinion that it will make the law acceptable by all the parties concerned and other critical stakeholders in that all-important sector.
“It will do us good if we avoid the hasty formulation and implementation of such laws across the country in the interest of peace and unity.’’
“It must, however, be noted that farmers/herders clashes did not start with this administration, yet this administration has taken more measures to end the crisis than any previous regime.”
He added that the Police have made some arrests in Benue and other places, and warned that there would be no sacred cows, as anyone who violates the law would be arrested and prosecuted.
The IGP also spoke on the problem of banditry in Zamfara, saying that the present administration was taking steps to avert future occurrence.
“Some arrests have already been made and the outcome of the investigation will be made known soonest.’’
He gave details of efforts to tackle kidnapping in the country, saying that the police had in December, arrested over 200 kidnappers, armed robbery and cattle rustling suspects in various parts of the country.
“Over 50 AK 47 Rifles, 20 English made pistols, two 5MG Rifles, over 1000 rounds of AK 47 Rifles and other assorted pistols ammunition were recovered from them.
“ These recoveries raise a serious alarm on the number of illegal arms and ammunition at the disposal of criminals and bandits.
“This must not be allowed to continue especially as the 2019 general election is fast approaching.’’
According to the IGP, all police chiefs in the 36 states and FCT have been directed to mop up of illegally acquired arms and ammunition within 21 days.
He decried the arming of security outfits formed by some estate governments, warning that at the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum, any person found with prohibited firearms will be arrested and prosecuted.
On the 2019 general elections, Idris appealed to politicians to desist from acts capable of truncating the elections.
“Election context must not be a do or die affair. It must be approached with the spirit of sportsmanship.
“Politicians should as a matter of urgent national importance begin to educate their supporters on the need for violent free elections.’’
He called for the support of well-meaning Nigerians for security agencies to make the country safer for all.
“Let me state unequivocally that the security architecture and infrastructure of any Nation is not strong without the people.
“The people are the main reason why the architecture ¡s reliable and dependable.
The Deputy Governor of Kaduna, Bala Bantex state called for greater synergy among states and other stakeholders towards addressing the insecurity challenges in the country.
“This summit provides us with a timely opportunity to collectively examine the security challenges we face and proffer workable solutions as a region.
“As leaders, we are to address the persistence of violent crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, rural banditry, cattle rustling, and other violent crimes. These crimes continue to needlessly cost lives and property. We must discuss how to relieve human suffering, comfort our people and stop the haemorrhage.
“While the North-East has begun an admirable recovery from the ravages of terror, the recent abduction of young girls in Dapchi is a painful reminder that evil has not given up. In the North-West, rural banditry is a serious concern and the most egregious attacks have been visited on our compatriots in Zamfara, while we in Kaduna have suffered on a different scale. The tensions and killings in the North-Central have needlessly torn apart communities.
“These are difficult moments. Apart from the loss of lives, the injuries and the pains of death and loss, vital social capital is imperilled.
The bonds of trust that enabled communities to easily uphold harmony and concord risk being broken. And the cycle of violent conflict scares investors away and slows much-needed growth and development of the region”.

Five students of the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, in Yobe State, who narrowly escaped abduction when suspected Boko Haram terrorists, have returned to their school.
The entire Dapchi community has been thrown into a sorrowful mood, following the invasion of the school by the insurgents which led to the closure of the institution (in the meantime) by the state government.
However, hope seems to be returning to the community as some of the students reportedly held hostage managed to escape the terrorists’ enclave.
In an exclusive interview with Channels Television, one of the students Sadiya Mohammed, who was part of the students that escaped when the school was invaded, narrated her experience in Hausa language.
She said: “Honestly, we are saddened with the abduction because we don’t really gain; sitting idle at home with the value of education in our modern world cannot be over-emphasised.
“110 of us were abducted, including my best friend, Zahra Mohammed, who will do all things together. I call on the government to look at the pathetic situation to intensify efforts towards the rescue of our colleagues.”
Watch the video clip below;
It is 10 days since the students were declared missing by their school authorities, as their parents have called on the Federal and state governments to ensure their safe return.
President Muhammadu Buhari, obviously worried about the situation, has given the assurance that he would ensure the safe return of the girls and other citizens in the captivity of the outlawed group.
The National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, who also met with the Yobe State Governor, Mr Ibrahim Gaidam, also reassured him of the Federal Government’s support.
“I want to reassure you of the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari in getting all these girls back,” he said.
“This is a primary responsibility that rests not only on his shoulders but on mine, as well as all my colleagues who are here and on those who are also operating elsewhere.”
On his part, Governor Geidam called for improved cooperation among religious, community and military leaders to ensure the speedy return of the girls.

Fred Ajudua

The trial of a suspected serial fraudster Fred Ajudua at the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos was stalled on Tuesday due to his absence in court.
According to a statement by the spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Wilson Uwujaren, he was charged with $8.4million fraud before Justice Josephine Oyefeso of the same court.
Ajudua is facing trial for allegedly defrauding a former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lieutenant General Ishaya Bamaiyi, of $8.4m while they were both in custody in Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos in 2004.
The defendant, together with his accomplices, had allegedly approached Bamaiyi and convinced him that he could secure his freedom and also secure legal services on his behalf.
At Tuesday’s sitting, counsel to Ajudua, Allen Agbaka, told the court about the current medical status of Ajudua and also sought an adjournment of the proceedings.
In his address, Agbaka stated that Ajudua was “evacuated to India on February 8, 2018, for urgent medical attention”, following a referral to Ruby Hall Clinic, India for surgery.
The counsel added that the defendant had written a letter to the court and attached his international passport, visa documents, and medical reports from Ruby Hall Clinic, India as well as photographs showing him on a hospital bed in India.
Ajudua’s lawyer, who said copies of the documents had been served on the prosecution counsel, S.K. Atteh, urged the court to adjourn the case for three to six months or sine die.
In his response, the prosecution counsel, however, told the court that the medical challenges of the defendant had delayed the commencement of the trial.
He, therefore, prayed the court to try the defendant in absentia, “since the matter has been long in court.”
Justice Oyefeso adjourned the case till May 23 and 28, 2018 for the commencement of trial.
She also ordered the defendant to be present in court at the next adjourned date.

There was a mild drama at the Senate on Tuesday over the National Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress held in Abuja.

Members of the minority Peoples Democratic Party mocked the APC over the current crises in the ruling party at the national level and in some states.

The Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, had moved that the plenary be adjourned for the APC NEC meeting.

Lawan said, “Today, the All Progressives Congress, the ruling party, the APC, is holding its NEC meeting and it has already started. As a very time-conscious party, our colleague senators on this side (majority) are representatives of the chamber, and because of this I want to plead with all our colleagues here across party lines to show the understanding just as we had shown understanding when the minority party, the PDP senators have to go for congresses or whatever.

“Based on this, Mr. President, very distinguished colleagues, I move that we stand down all the items on the Order Paper to another legislative day, to enable our colleagues to attend the NEC meeting of the ruling party, I so move.”

While saying this, the PDP senators chorused, ‘All Progressives Crisis,’ forcing Lawan to pause and called for ‘protection’ from the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary.

Seconding the motion, the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Bwacha, said, “Before I second the motion, I want to join my colleagues from the other side sincerely and wish them safe landing. The number of policemen we have is short because of the crises. I don’t how many we will dispatch there to supervise (the meeting). So, Mr. President, having advised as such, I pray that there will be a safe landing.”

The Niger State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers, Shehu Bida and Bello Mallam, who claimed that they went into robbery because there was recession in the country and the “government did not provide any job for people.”

The two suspects were arrested in Talba Estate, Bida town in the Bida Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent learnt that Buda, 20, and Mallam, 18, were trailed and apprehended by the police after robbing one Mohammed Mohammed of the sum of N7,400 and two handsets valued at N9,000.

The suspects confessed that they inflicted injuries on Mohammed before dispossessing him of his N7,400 and the two mobile phones.

Northern City News gathered that the hoodlums used a machete and planks to injure Mohammed on the head, for preventing them from raping his daughter.

Buda told our correspondent that he committed the crime due to the economic recession in the country.

“Many people are stealing in the country, including top government officials. People are dying of hunger and there is no job. What else do you expect me to do other than stealing?

“If am discharged by the police, I will still go back to rob people. The country is in a bad situation,” the suspect said unrepentantly.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, told Northern City News on Tuesday, that the operatives recovered from the suspects the machete.

The police said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

There was pandemonium in the Akala and Idi-Oro areas of Mushin, Lagos State, on Tuesday when some hoodlums clashed with policemen from the Area D Command.

During the mayhem, no fewer than five people, including a policeman, three residents and a pupil, were reportedly killed.

Our correspondent learnt that trouble started when a police team raided a shop on Elegba Street, where some hoodlums sold hemp.

Latest Reality Metro gathered that the hoodlums attacked the policemen with broken bottles and stones in retaliation.

The cops, who retreated, reportedly returned with reinforcements and engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle.

A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the police shot tear gas canisters into two private secondary schools –Ansarudeen Comprehensive College and Amazing Grace Secondary School – where some pupils were choked.

A pupil of Amazing Grace, Samuel Okechukwu, who was asthmatic, reportedly died.

He said, “The police had been raiding Akala and Idi-Oro for some weeks now and carrying away bags of hemp. The hoodlums believe that the police resell them. They had been planning to fight back.

“Last night (Monday), a man on Elegba Street took delivery of hemp worth N7m and the police got information about it. Around 11am, the policemen, led by the Area Commander, Area D Mushin, Akinbayo Olusoji, headed for the shop and seized the hemp.

“The residents, who had been enraged by previous raids, mobilised and launched an attack. They threw stones, broken bottles and other items at the policemen.

“The policemen returned with reinforcements. Three people were shot dead. They fired two tear gas canisters into Ansarudeen Comprehensive College on Alhaji Lasisi Street and another one entered into Amazing Grace Secondary School on Elegba Street. Many of the pupils were affected. A boy died in Amazing Grace.”

Latest Reality Metro learnt that the victim, Okechukwu, who was in Junior Secondary School two, was confirmed dead in a hospital.

Another pupil, who was running home in the confusion that followed the shootout, was reportedly hit by a vehicle. His leg was broken.

A source faulted the police for shooting tear gas into the schools.

“They should have known that at that period (11am), the pupils would be on break and would be playing on their premises. The boy that died lived with his parents on Amodu Street, Idi-Oro. He was their only child,” he added.

Two of the three other victims were identified as Akeem Mumuni and Ambali Adeyemi.

The police were said to have  taken away Adeyemi’s corpse.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said a policeman was killed.

He noted that many passersby were injured during the mayhem.

The resident, however, said the fight was caused by alleged police extortion.

“There are black spots in Idi-Oro where the hoodlums smoke hemp freely. The police collect settlement from them. The police had gone there two weeks ago and got some settlements. They returned today (Tuesday) and the boys resisted and that was how the fight started.

“The hoodlums brought out guns and engaged the police in a shootout. It was like a war. The police had killed two of them before a cop was seized and stabbed to death. They brought out his intestines with bottles,” he said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said he was aware of the incident, adding that the details were still sketchy.

He promised to call back after getting enough information. Oti had yet to do so as of press time.

Meanwhile, two traders at the Ladipo International Spare parts Market, Mushin, lost their lives when suspected cult members unleashed terror on the traders around 3pm last Tuesday.

The cult members, who were  dressed in white and black, reportedly stormed the market while the traders were transacting buisness.

Those killed were said to have resisted the cult members from collecting money they (traders) made from sales that day.

The deceased were identified only as Ndubuisi and John.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has called on corporate organisations to partner the state government by sponsoring community development projects.

Ambode made the call on Tuesday at Gbagada, in the Kosofe Local Council Development Area while opening the remodelled Araromi Youth Development Centre sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company, Nigeria.

Represented by the state Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, the governor said community development projects were aimed at improving the people’s standard of living and should not be left for government alone.

He said, “Corporate organisations need to borrow a leaf from Coca-Cola by sponsoring development projects. The government, in turn, will continue to provide an enabling business environment that will guarantee quick returns on investments.”

Ambode added that his administration was committed to providing sport parks and vocational facilities in public places to revive grass roots and school sports.

“Our plan as a government is to provide a platform for the positive engagement of our youths and the discovery of talented young people,” Ambode added.

Earlier, the Managing Director, Coca-Cola, Nigeria, Mr. Bhupendra Suri, explained that the organisation had been adopting strategic grass roots initiatives to inspire teenagers to actualise their dreams.

After the opening of the facility, Adebule kicked the ball for the commencement of a novelty match between some youths and ex-players of the national team, including Peter Rufai, Celestine Babayaro and Victor Ikpeba.
